This pre-market is like a Black Friday sale, what are you guys going to load up on in the coming days if this continues?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 06:13 AM PDT

Luckily I'm currently cash heavy and plan on loading up on AMZN, BABA, FB and NVDA . I'll probably take my lumps and finally sell AAL and BA

Be fearful when others are greedy and greedy when others are fearful.

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 02:00 PM PDT

I think today is a great opportunity to remind new and experienced investors alike of this elegantly simple, yet deceptively ingenious quote by Warren Buffett. When the market is rough, do not emotionally invest. If you recently initiated a position on a stock and did your DD, then this should be an even better buying opportunity to average down.

Trade talks are scary. The threat of a recession is scary. If you bought at the peak of the market before each recession, you would still be in the green today. Don't forget that. Time in the market beats timing the market. So do yourself a favor and don't cut your time in the market short because of a rough portfolio day. Best of luck to all of you!

Today I initiated positions in $V, $FB, and $MSFT and I added quite a hefty amount to my position in $DIS. Hopefully the tides turn soon and if not, then I will add more at a lower price!

What stocks are a good buy during this dip?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 07:14 AM PDT

Been playing around with stocks for about six months now and the stocks I have seem to be relatively unaffected by what's going on in the market these past few days/ today.

So I'd rather buy something while it dips but I'm curious if there are certain industries that typically bounce back in times like these (trade wars, Hong Kong, etc)

Any places you would suggest I look?

Potential recession in 12-24 months lasting an average of 8-15 months i.e how will life be around 2022-2023?

What does a person do if they are fully vested during a dip?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 09:58 AM PDT

So as of right now 100% of my money is in stocks. (I have a savings of amount 9 months worth of backup) Before the current dip i was up about 3.5% for the year. As of me typing this i am down 3% for the year. If i had more money the obvious thing is to buy more at a discount, but I don't have any more.

So what options do I have aside from sitting and watching. I don't mind sitting and watching cause it will go back up, but are there better/smarter ways to play this?

    ENPH

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 07:17 AM PDT

I've owned ENPH for a while now and I've done reasonably well with it including last week's fantastic bump! It's definitely long term and I realize that much future growth depends on how they enter into the emerging global markets. That being said, I'm just wondering how others are viewing this stock? Is it worth buying more into it assuming it will keep growing or does a correction of the current price seem more like the current probability?

How to find stocks I own, but I don't know what they are, or through whom I own them?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 10:14 AM PDT

As a wee lad, I was lucky enough to have grandparents who wanted me to have a bright future, and so they bought a few shares of stock in my name. The company they bought for me was split into many companies in a monopoly breakup (you may be able to guess the one). I did not know that I owned these stocks at all until well into adulthood.

Now, by doing some research into the breakup and trying to math out the split values and other stock splits over time, I may be able to figure out where the money in the original investment was diverted (i.e. how many shares of what, I probably have). But:

    • since I don't trust myself with my novice experience in stocks, and
    • since I don't know if other stocks were purchased in my name, or which financial institution may be controlling them currently, and
    • to make this question more general and relevant to others,

    How can I find out:

    • what stocks I own,
    • that I might not know about, and
    • how many shares of them I own, and
    • which financial institution currently controls/maintains them, and
    • how I can take control of them?

    Thanks!!

Edit: I looked into unclaimed property claims. Nothing shows up for me, despite the fact I know I own some stock, because I get paper dividend checks every quarter. In other words, the property is owned by me, through a valid financial institution. I can call the institution issuing the checks. This doesn't answer my question. For the stocks I do own, through a valid institution, but do not know about for the reasons listed above, how can I find them?

For example, if a valid account was created in your name, through Merrill Lynch, and stocks were purchased in your name in that account, these would not appear in unclaimed property searches. Why would they? But if this happens when you are 0~1 years old, you will not know about them. How can you find out 30+ years later?

Why is PICK not correlated to gold performance?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 02:36 PM PDT

I was looking at the charts for PICK, and it has been under-performing spectacularly vs its gold only counterparts. Wouldn't this trade tension also increase the value of rare earth minerals mined outside of china? Why is this index suffering?

What percent did your portfolio's value change today? What did bad and what did good?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 01:45 PM PDT

I lost only 0.48 percent while the indexes lost over 2 percent. The traditional stocks and bonds really helped. A small amount to tech stocks did poorly. The bonds and consumer staples did good in relative strength, especially the bonds going up in value.

Reasons not to invest in Disney right now?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 08:20 AM PDT

With the recent dip, I was looking to buy into some usually more expensive stocks. I don't see how Disney would really be effected by new tariffs, especially compared to other companies, so why wouldn't it be a smart investment right now?

    API for requesting stock data

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 11:41 AM PDT

    Hello,

I am writing a program to make fundamental analysis simpler. Is there an API offered by a group like Bloomberg, Yahoo finance, NASDAQ, etc. that allows you to request EPS from different time periods, among other data related to a stock?

If not, I suppose there is another way to get this, which is just scrape websites for the data.

    Regards
