Tuesday Operational Roundtable - A Forum to Ask About Legal, Accounting, Project Management, or How to Get Started

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 06:06 AM PDT

Welcome to this week's Operational Roundtable Thread.

Ask about anything related to legal, accounting, project management, or how to get started.

Don't be shy. The purpose of this is to learn and share ideas and methodologies with one another.

Any question is a good question!

If you are answering questions, remember to be kind and supportive. Many are just starting out and have no idea what they are doing. That's okay! We all knew nothing before we knew something.

You can also find more support using instant chat on the /r/startups discord.

    0 faith in our developer

    Posted: 07 Aug 2019 12:04 AM PDT

So to sum up my situation; I'm currently working as a UI/UX designer at a start up working on building a data management platform. It's fully funded by the founder who sold his last company (a completely different business) for a undisclosed amount. After the founder sold his previous company he met our current developer at a fundraiser type event. The developer is a consultant who has a team in India. So this developer ended up selling the founder on this idea that he could easily build this platform. For the first 6 months (prior to me joining) things were slow and one other person was working on the business side of it. Fast forward I joined on to help fix a horrible interface, I kept noticing though the developer really wasn't paying attention to our requests and his team overseas was even worse. Designs were off, functionality was wrong, and when we would have our weekly meetings with the developer he was clueless. I come to find out through some research that this developer will try to go to networking events play up his business and try to people to put him on a retainer to build an app or platform. This guy really just knows how to sell. Anyways it's been over a year and launch dates keep getting pushed back, and the owner literally has no idea the how to follow the process when it comes to building something like this. I've brought up the issues about the developer and the owner admits it wasn't the best choice, but refuses to look for another one or even hire a consultant for a code audit. I'm getting to wits end and wondering does it make sense to just exit at this point. It's the owner and I right now, with the occasional face to face with the developer. I just don't see things changing and this product getting to a launching point. Just curious of anyone had similar experiences? How did you handle them?

    Identifying Potential Investors

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 09:59 PM PDT

Hi all, trying to culminate a list of potential investors and am quite annoyed with AngelList and it's lack of filtering. Are there any other sites you recommend? I have a few specific industries and locations I'm trying to target and am wondering what the most efficient way to do this will be.

Bulding an MVP without a brand

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 08:02 AM PDT

Basically, I want to validate a business idea without waiting or coming up with a great name, image, design etc. I want to see if the idea could work as fast as possible without yet having a brand and having not invested in any design. I am not very experienced at this. Has anyone done this and is it advisable?

    Confused about startup partnership

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 03:31 PM PDT

I'm a software developer and have been planning to create a Saas product for a long time (but never actually did due to lack of a persuadable idea). A months ago, I materialized an Idea which had been lingering in my mind.

In order to validate the idea, I reached out to a person who has credibility in that industry and though of as the first potential client for whom I could build the product, get the feedback, improve and then get the product in the market once ready.

In my initial conversation, I approached this person with that idea to create a product for him at no cost and would ask for any kind of money only when the product was ready. My intention was to create the product with some feedback and then offer this person the product at a lower subscription rate (as he would be providing the help in the form of feedback) and then make money from other clients that would join after the product was ready.

In our first meeting, the discussion changed slightly, where this person mentioned that he had a similar idea (which he actually did), and wanted to get this to reality. So, the discussion shifted from the product being mine and the person being the client after the product is ready to create the product as partners. He mentioned that he has contacts and knows people who would be ready to pay for the product once it is ready.

So, for the next 6 months or so I will be working on creating the product while getting feedbacks from this person and then after we start selling the subscriptions, I would receive a certain percentage of the profit.

After this, I started doing some research on the things that I would need to consider for partnership and I had some concerns in my mind.

Since I will be investing a lot more time during the creation of the product, should I expect to get paid for the time and work (from the start or ever)?

Even if we don't get much traction after the product launch, my partner would have the product for his use but I would be left with nothing. The time and effort put in by me would never be compensated.

Due to these concerns, I reached back to this person asking about what he would be comfortable with.

    • Paying me some compensation for all the tech work I will be doing.
    • In case, the product does not take off and my partner is the only one using it, would he then buy the product for some amount?

On this I got the following conditions:

    • I won't be paid anything during the product development (as the only reason he was interested in working with me was that I had mentioned in my initial email that I would not charge anything until the product is ready).
    • After the product is ready, I can get paid for the product and have no partnership OR stick with the partnership and never get paid for the initial work I did. The only money I will be making would be through profit sharing. If he buys the product, It won't be at the price which it cost me in terms of development hours, but a lower price that he mentioned he won't be able to share now.

Working on this, while keeping my day job would require a great effort from my side while my partner would be giving the feedback (not that it's not useful but when compared to the time/work effort I am putting in, it's not equal). Now, I am confused about whether I should take most of the risk of failure on my shoulder and build the product or part ways because we are not able to come at terms that both of us feel satisfied about.

Note: I am not trying to blame my partner as his points seem to be valid from what I first communicated to him. I feel like I made a bad job of communicating my plans and terms.

Also, we live in different countries (if that matters).

STARTUP IDEA: Drive Lamborgini Huracan or Ferrari 458 for a week every month for 2000$. (6 month minimum commitment)

    Posted: 07 Aug 2019 01:38 AM PDT

Hey guys, how does it sound? Would you take this deal? I would like to know your opinion.

I tested it on craigslist with 5$ ad and got 37 people replied me back within a week.

Here's exactly craigslist ad I used:

    Hello,

Would like to find someone to whom I can give my 2017 lambo huracan for a week every month with at least 6-month commitment. (12 preferred)

It's my baby so looking for a very responsible person.

Requirements (please answer if everything applies to you):

    - Age 30+
    - Good/Excellent credit score
    - No criminal background
    - Car insurance
    - Experience with supercars
    - Garage space
    - 300 miles per week max
    - No speeding

2000/month (6 months paid upfront). We will come up with some kind of rental agreement also.

    Thank you

Let's say I buy Lambo for $200k and use it for 3 years/30.000 miles and then sell it for $100k.

    Let's do the math:

    - $200k car price + ($2000 x 4 customers / x 36 months) = $188,000 profit per car in 3 years - $20.000 (maintenance/service fee/operations, say 10% of the car value) = around $170,000 profit per car in 3 years,

    10 cars/40 active customers = 1.7M profit

    100 cars/400 active customers = 17M profit

    1000 cars/4000 active customers - 170M profit

WHAT's YOUR OPINION ON THIS BUSINESS IDEA? WILL IT WORK?

I created a youtube channel to share ideas like that, you can watch a full 10-minute video describing this idea:

    https://youtu.be/EVXopA3481k

I'm going to post more ideas so please subscribe to my channel so you don't miss it :)

    Code sharing?!

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 06:38 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I have a tech partner that is refusing to share his code with me. We have a 50/50 partnership but no official contract just a friendship mutual trust and agreement. But I guess its not friendship anymore.

For the record I am the business developer and he codes.

Is it ok for him not to share the code with me or am I asking too much here?!

Working a night job (8pm-3am) that I hate, in a field I detest, for flexible work hours, decent money, and a zero hour contract, all so I can do my ‘side huddle’, but guys, I bloody hate my job.

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 07:23 PM PDT

Pretty much title guys and girls, I really hate my job, but it gives me a decent array of benefits, I just find it quite disheartening. Have any of you found yourself in this sort of situation? A good benefit I find is due to the hours, I can use mornings (11AM - 7PM) to work on my project

Startup team management - effective transitions

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 07:11 PM PDT

Hello everyone. Foremost, the information I have learned from your stories and experiences have been invaluable; a startup is such a rigorous process from start to finish.

So, my question stems from effective management. We have been transitioning from research to implementation, e.g. site development and content creation. So, far it has been incorporating on a state level and understanding tax implications and liabilities in an LLC, prototyping, trademarking, patents etc.. This has been quite a journey.

However, we (3 total - 1 designer, 1 professional writer and myself) have been focusing on research and development from mostly an observational and prototyping phase. We have around 150~ pages of market research, goals, guidelines, forecasting etc.. I have about 6 years in the industry myself.

I have found, that a corporate structure is vastly different. You have a starting basis, existing clients, and an overall structure. Now this is were I feel like I'm lacking. I'm currently a manager at my day job and I do a fairly decent at understanding and providing for my peers and colleagues.

However, this startup atmosphere is far more intimate. I eat with these people and bleed with these people. I feel like I am lacking as a leader. How have you created effective project management? I want to hold them responsible but not seem tyrannical in the process. It seems like such a delicate process and I feel like I am failing personally. Everyone is happy and on task, but I feel as though we need to be more effective with our time.

How have you created efficiency and implemented effective management tools?

    Incorporating in New York State

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 04:10 AM PDT

I have a question for anyone who has ever incorporated in New York State? I submitted the certificate of incorporation about a month ago and still haven't heard anything back. For those that have incorporated in NYS, how long did it take to get some kind of confirmation and in what form did that confirmation come (email, physical letter, pony express...)? Thanks!

How do you do charge for a new user added to an account during billing cycle for price per seat saas product?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 09:20 AM PDT

I am looking for advice on how to carry out billing for users added to a saas software part through a billing cycle month for a price per seat saas product.

I am concerned about the following:

    1. credit card fees for part usage
    2. do you put the added user on to the next billing cycle with them have the part month free to keep consistent billing cycle
    3. do you bill the new additional user on their own billing cycle (ie reducing profit due to credit card fees)

Thanks in advance for any advice

    Conducting a technical interview

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 05:14 AM PDT

How does a non tech CEO conduct a technical interview? We have 2 well worthy candidates of the job but candidate B has more skills than candidate A, but Candidate A has a much better personality and has a better company fit.

They are next for the tech interview.

Which questions do i ask? How do i prove their software engineering skills?
