Startup CEOs: What is your average workday like?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 12:38 PM PDT

I am an apprising startup owner i am interested in what the day to day life of a startup CEO is like.

What do you do during your days? Where do you work at? What kind of hours do you work?

Another interesting discussion point is what kind of education did you have pertaining to being a CEO? If you didn't have any formal education on running a company, how did you make up for you lack of education?

What Should I Know About Joining a Startup?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 11:24 AM PDT

Hi! I am a young professional in a comfortable, fun, well paid corporate job with a serious growth potential. Yet I am bored to death, because the job is easy, the company lost its North Star, I want to be challenged, and these are the years I want to give away by working for a startup with a vision. I have an opportunity to be working with 2 founders as their 1st hire/3rd employee. This post is targeting a few people in the audience:

    FOUNDERS:

    1) What do you look for in your first employees?

    2) What makes someone good/bad startup hire?

    3) How did you validate someone was going to be a good fit during the interview process?

    4) When did you know you needed to hire people?

    FIRST EMPLOYEES:

    1) What are your stories from the journey of being the first hires?

    2) What did you look for in the company/ founders? What are the important questions to ask?

    3) Why did you do it?

    4) What are the challenges/rewards?

    Thank you!

    Finding Specialized Manufacturers

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 05:56 PM PDT

I have noticed that a lot of the popular projects on Kickstarter are little "gadgets" that are simple 'concept-wise' but may provide some difficulty in manufacturing; a bracelet that serves as a USB-C charging cable and a multi-function wallet are two of these types of gadgets I was referencing (I can't link them, but they're currently trending on Kickstarter)

My question is: how do you find these manufacturers? And if finding them is relatively easy, how do you negotiate building prototypes (which will need weeks or months of testing)?

    New project planning / proposal

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 10:22 PM PDT

I was employed to build a business a couple of years ago from basically the ground up (only had a couple of clients), I've successfully done this and built a team and a profitable business in the process. I never had ambitions of running the business permanently and we've managed to bring in a more experienced CEO to take things to the next level (I'm very much a hit the ground running, bull in china shop, get things done kinda guy)

I've been asked by our new CEO to come to him with a list of new special projects for me to run with next. I've got a list of 5 and pulled together a basic matrix, with things such as rev potential, difficulty, investment required etc to get started etc, with scores 1-10 which give a rough overall project viability score. But it is very rough.

How would you carry out the exercise? I feel this is very rough and needs to be a bit more scientific

    Cheers

    Startup app

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 09:50 PM PDT

    Hello!

I've been thinking of starting an app that I think would be a great idea and probably a lucrative thing.
The thing is, I don't know how to create apps, I barely don't know anything about finances, no formal eduaction.
How do people start these apps? Where do you even start? Hire someone to create the app, and hire someone to do the financial side of it too? Do I need to learn how to create an app for this?

Please give me your best tips!

As part of my role in the company, should I receive commissions permanently for any companies I bring in as customers?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 08:09 PM PDT

So let's say I sign up some state as a buyer of our product, and they continue that program each and every year. Even if I leave the company, should I be asking for commissions related to those contracts for as long as they remain purchasers of the same product?

It's an fda-approved product in the medical field and I'm wondering what you think the commission I should be asking for is? It has no sales yet and would take a lot overcoming a lot of hurdles, getting a lot of political and community support to get it through, so it's no small feat, but if I signed up some state and that's $5M in revenue per year, would asking for 15% be fair? The gross profit on the product is 60%, and there's not a ton of SG&A costs, so a lot of that would go to the bottom line. Let's say 40% profit margins before my take is factored in. If I took 15% it would be 25% profit margins. So I'd be taking a big cut of the equity essentially, but I'm the one that has to bring in the revenue at the end of the day, which the company has thus far not been able to do.

How do convice a founder that I provide value and that he should give me equity over a certain period of time?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 06:13 PM PDT

Hey guys, I need some advice from specifically startup founders and managers. Tomorrow I am going to have a phone call with the founder of a startup about me advising them about marketing. I know a lot about data-driven marketing and have some experience with paid promotions, content creation, and copywriting. When I originally emailed him about this my only intention was to give them some advice because I thought they had a great idea and they could use some pointers. He emailed me back and said that they are looking for a marketing specialist and said that he would pay me once they reach a certain amount of users. The startup is currently in its product building phase. I have never worked at a startup and I don't have experience with creating websites (I am currently learning though), they have a terrible website. I can currently offer value through copywriting and guerrilla marketing. I am planning to ask for a position as a marketer in exchange for a vested contract for a certain amount of the company. My question is, how can I prove myself that I know a lot about marketing and that I am learning front end developing (my skills will be sufficient in ~1-2 months) and how can I increase my chances of him hiring me? The company doesn't currently offer paid plans but probably will in a few months. All my work will be remote.

Note: I am 17 years old (he doesn't know this) and I a successful online book store and have some marketing experience.

I wrote this in a hurry, not well structured.
