Posted: 05 Aug 2019 11:15 AM PDT So, I have some grey hair, but I can rock climb like a MF... I see so many posts here about young accountants who are looking for advice on how to make the most money and/or how to set yourself up for an exit from public accounting that will make big bucks. Nothing wrong with that, but it isn't everything. The office managing partner sat down with my start team back in 1989 for an afternoon town hall meeting. He gave two pieces of sage advice that afternoon: 1) If you're looking to make lots of money, go into sales or start your own business. 2) Beware of addictions (work, alcohol, food, drugs, gambling, etc.) if you choose a long-term career in accounting. I'm telling you this, because I wish I was willing to hear him at that point 30 years ago. I wanted the big partner money. When I burned out of public accounting, I wanted the big CFO money. When a couple of companies I worked for crashed and burned, I wanted the big consulting money (and got some of it). When I traveled myself out of not one, but two marriages, I wanted the big private equity money. When Lehman Bros tanked and brought down the entire market, I wanted the big governance consulting money. I missed an opportunity to join a mid-market company called MicroSoft in the early 1990s as a staff accountant. The stock options I would have been granted would have me comfortably retired 15 years ago, but I wasn't willing to move to Seattle at the time. I damn near killed myself chasing money. I found divorce(s), alcohol, drugs, discontentment and ultimately a GREAT life. I own my own home. I have a low pressure job that pays me well. I found sobriety. I have friends. I have a girlfriend or two who like to do the things I like to do. I make WAY less than partners or consultants of my age. I found happiness. I wish I could have let this happen a long time ago. Accounting and consulting professions are great career paths. You can make a awesome living wage right out of school and make six figures before you are 30 if you just try and have some talent. You can also just chill and enjoy above average wages and live your life to the fullest. That's what's important. That is all... I wish you all the best in life! [link] [comments]

Anyone else feel like you lost control of your life in Public Accounting? Posted: 05 Aug 2019 06:52 AM PDT It just seems i'm always scheduling my life based on the needs of the firms and the clients. e.g I'll usually book my appointments on the weekends or late at night, won't go out with friends as an engagement is coming or is currently ongoing. Looking for a complete career change to accounting Posted: 05 Aug 2019 09:11 PM PDT I am hoping to get some good advice here. I am turning 30 this month. I have a master's degree in a field of psychology, which is completely unrelated to accounting. I have invested all this time in school for a field that I was passionate about, but after working in the field for years, I'm burning out and I don't think it's sustainable for my life. I love the kids I work with, but I can't handle the parents anymore and the pressure, and the amount of compassion it takes to keep doing the work. Things will be good for about a month until some extremely stressful event happens with a client which causes me a lot of emotional stress and affects my health significantly. Working with adults isn't really an option or something I want to do, as the clients my field will take tend to be more dangerous. I've been looking into possible career changes and I have been interested in accounting. I've always enjoyed tasks that involve working with numbers, and I have always been decent at math. I don't know whether I would quit my job completely to go back to school full time, or if I can swing some online classes while I still work. I have the possible option of just quitting, moving back with my parents, as they live within walking distance of the university of the town I grew up in. But, this would be a dramatic change in my current lifestyle which I've gotten used to. I guess what I'd like to know is 1) what is working in the field actually like? What does a typical day look like 2) what type of degree should I pursue if I have a master's in an unrelated field? Another bachelor's? some sort of master's? 3) what different types of jobs are out there? and 4) What are the main stressors you encounter at your job? I'm not overly concerned with pursuing a job with high pay, as I currently work in a field that doesn't pay too well and I live fairly comfortably on what I currently make. All I'd like is a low pressure job with pay that lets me continue to live comfortably, and possibly the option of working from home. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! [link] [comments]
What's you're biggest fuck up / embarrassment story from the office? I'll start... Posted: 05 Aug 2019 07:21 PM PDT As an intern (21 years old), I accidentally texted my engagement manager (A middle aged mother) a text message that meant to go to a girl I met off tinder. The message was something like this: "Hey I know you're underage and can't go out yet, but that won't stop me. What are you doing this weekend?" Who can top me? Edit: she was 19 (under 21). I'm not weird I swear. [link] [comments]
Genuinely curious as to why this happens Posted: 05 Aug 2019 02:52 PM PDT Just received a 40+ page pdf that I now have to manually enter into excel. Is there a specific reason why clients refuse to send the original excel file? Is it due to reference issues or do people just really hate auditors [link] [comments]
Posted: 05 Aug 2019 02:33 PM PDT I saw a lot of mentioning of drinking culture among interns and associates. I never liked alcohol and not supposed to have any because of the medicines I'm taking anyway. Would I be an outcast for not digging alcohol and the other stuff? Would a small firm or a big one fit me better? [link] [comments]
Did you get a raise once you became a CPA? Posted: 05 Aug 2019 01:14 PM PDT Quick background on myself. I'm 22 and a first year staff hired on after my busy season internship. I'm one test away from my CPA license, it's reg, I work in tax and I've passed the other three first time with scores of 85+ so I'm not worried about failing. I had a compensation meeting with the lead partner today and he told me that I won't be seeing a raise above the standard cost of living increase/performance review when I get my CPA license. Is this normal? He also told me big raises are handed out with promotions so do I have to wait to become a senior to get a raise? Is there anybody who just recently got licensed with a similar or different experience? [link] [comments]
Posted: 05 Aug 2019 07:56 PM PDT Hey all, I have no experience in this and thought I'd post here. I have been tasked to find out the cheapest way to get SOC 2 accreditation for an aussie-based tech start up and don't particualry know where to start. Is this typically done by the Big 4 and how much does the whole process cost? [link] [comments]

Should I put actual CPA scores on my resume? (and other Meet the Firms questions) Posted: 05 Aug 2019 07:39 PM PDT Meet the Firms is coming up. I'm about to start my Master of Tax Accounting. I have taken FAR (87), BEC (92), and AUD (waiting on score). I plan to take REG next week and receive my score (for that and Audit) in time for Meet the Firms. How do I display this on my resume? Something like "CPA Candidate: passed all 4 parts" or do I list the individual scores? And since my state is a dual-step state (where you get a CPA certificate after passing and a license after the work experience part), should I say "CPA certificate earned" and they will know what that means? Also, would this CPA line go under my masters and undergrad information or above all that? Bonus: Does anyone have experience giving out a cover letter at Meet the Firms? I am going to, in an attempt to make me stand out. (I have autism, so I am hoping it will help make up for a lack of social skills/understanding.) Just wondering if giving out a cover letter is more common than I think. [link] [comments]
Busy season weight loss accountability thread ? Posted: 05 Aug 2019 09:11 AM PDT Is there any interest in a recurring weight loss accountability program through busy season? I know I would do a lot better with one. Maybe call it "Weight Loss Wednesday" or "Fitness Friday"? [link] [comments]

B4 vs. Mid-Tier: Work-Life Balance Posted: 05 Aug 2019 10:46 AM PDT From the FAQ, I gather
Basically I wanted to gauge people's individual reactions to that... from your experience, would you say starting at a BDO/RSM/Crowe is just as much work without as much pay-off? [link] [comments]
