My abusive ex sold my house without my knowledge Posted: 26 Aug 2019 05:20 AM PDT I inherited my mom's house when she died. A couple years ago, my then boyfriend moved in with me. But he turned abusive and after a particularly bad night about a year and a half ago, I fled and moved to another city. I just heard from a mutual friend that my ex moved out of state several months ago. I went to my house over the weekend to check on it and make a plan to move back in but there's another couple living there now. They said they bought the house and have all the paperwork to prove it. When I tried explaining that I actually owned the house they acted like I was crazy and threatened to call the police unless I left immediately. I'm heartbroken because not only have I lost a place that is sentimental to me, but my abusive ex got all the money from the sale. Is there anything I can do? I'm in Maryland. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Aug 2019 09:02 AM PDT I started a new job at a daycare shortly after moving back home. I signed all the paperwork for both of my sons to go to daycare there and the payment was through my native tribe. They had room for them and then some and now after a girl that had been working there much longer than me, backed into my car they have decided that they "didn't need me this week, and will let me know if that changes" when my position was a full time position. Then all of a sudden, the next day, don't have room for two children who are rightfully attending and paying for their spots. They are DHS run and I know for a fact that they wouldn't just text any other parent and say "we don't have room for them today" because they are paying for their children to go there and for their spots. How can they do this?? I don't know if her hitting my car had something to do with it but it all happened one after another and things were pretty uncomfortable with my boss and coworkers both when I called the police for a police report on the accident instead of just taking her word that she would "bring her insurance tomorrow" Come to find out her name isn't on the insurance of the vehicle and her and my boss are good friends. Posted: 25 Aug 2019 09:48 PM PDT It's basically what the title claims. I work at a McDonalds in Texas as a cashier. I get an hourly wage and get paid biweekly. It's rare that we get counterfeit currency but when we do, us cashiers are held responsible. Being held responsible is one thing, however is it legal to take away the cashier's pay if it was later learned that a counterfeit bill was accepted on their shift? I'm being docked $50 for unknowingly accepting the bill. Honestly I'm more just curious than wanting to take this to court or anything. It will certainly affect me working there in the future however. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Aug 2019 07:08 AM PDT I recently moved into an apartment embedded in a larger building that is used for public events. There are two meters on the building, so I was happy to assume my room was properly separated. When the worker from the electric company came In the process of my taking over (the meter was under commercial rates, so he needed to inspect) he noted it was spinning and tried to investigate why, this was my first tip off. I asked the professional property manager, who is working as intermediary with the owners, to have the electric panel looked at since it is outside the apartment elsewhere in the building and i have no access. He has ignored this request. A plumber called in for a separate task confirmed there is a single large hot water heater shared with a commercial kitchen downstairs. I suspect i am paying for this at least. Since the property manager failed to get anyone to check the panel, or simply allowed me access, i have found the meter and started taking pictures when i leave and when i return. Even this doesn't show the full picture because they start using the kitchen before i leave in the morning. Still, it is clear that the usage when i am gone is far higher than when i am home. There is only a very efficient fridge left on while i am away. The property manager is playing dumb and saying maybe if i am unable to be happy with the arrangement we can break the lease and i can move out. This will cost me a decent amount of money and time, and i assume is an attempt at a power play. I think it is pretty negligent to have made me take responsibility of a meter that is not strictly my own usage, i obviously wouldn't have agreed. My rent should have been somewhat higher and electric included if there was no way to separate usage. What recourse do i have in this situation? Edit: I am in Hawaii [link] [comments] |
So I woke up this morning, and my car was towed. MS Paint included![VA] Posted: 26 Aug 2019 07:00 AM PDT I live in a gated apartment complex that offers paid parking spots. Residents can rent them for an additional fee per month. These parking spots are indicated by way of paint on the asphalt with a number indicating the parking spot number (ex: RESERVED 420). However, if the spot is not paid for that month, then it's free parking. The way the apartment complex indicates if a spot is paid for or not, is by way of a sign. The pole for the sign is always there, but if the sign is actually posted, then the spot is paid for an reserved. As a recap - post only = open. Post plus sign = reserved. Yesterday, I parked my car in one of these spots, but no sign was posted - so open parking, right? Well... I woke up this morning, and my car was gone. I first thought it was stolen because I've never had my car towed before, and I was parked in open parking. As a last ditch before calling the police, I went to check with the leasing office, and surprise surprise, my car was towed overnight. I asked the leasing office if they had photos, and they did, but conveniently you cannot see the lack of sign posted. Seriously, there are eight photos, and you can't see the post in any of them. I had these emailed to me as a safe guard. I also confirmed the spot number, and walked to the spot in order to take photos of the lack of sign. The employee I spoke with at the office was very kind, and double checked everything. Apparently, the spot was reserved on their spreadsheet, but no sign was ever posted to notify residents. She agreed that my car should not have been towed, and advised me to contact the towing company to get my car back. I am conflicted because I don't want to pay the fees since I feel like my car shouldn't have been towed. But at the same time, I don't want the fees to rack up. The property manager (who has more authority) is due into work in a few minutes, so I'm going to speak with them. Not sure what else I can do. Thanks for any advice. This is in northern Virginia. Posted: 26 Aug 2019 06:10 AM PDT Our country has a culture of when a girl is misbehaving she's swifly married off to a man who'll " rehabilitate " her . My friend was born and raised in the states and after doing some teenage girl stuff ( dating , staying out late ) her backwards parents deemed it whore like behaviour and kept kicking her out and then calling the cops to go arrest her friends for harboring a runaway ( they took her back in bc she practically raises her siblings and does all the housework plus work and hand them over all her money ) once the beating and emotional abuse stopped working. They had enough of her disobedience so they kept trying to talk her into marrying a nice boy and settling down and quitting her shenanigans ( when she was in his country hed randomly join their family time and try to hold her hand and flirt with her ) . She said she asked for help while in the states and they said they couldnt do anything as long as her parents weren't starving their kids or something and all her school offered to do is give her online classes . She was dropped off here and her passport and phone and everything was taken from her and she was told she'd only be allowed back late 2020 ( shed be 18 ) . Shes staying with religious family and shes not allowed out and she can only take her online classes while supervised. I lent her my phone to talk to her siblings and theyre being turned against her by their abusive mother . Shes Absolutely miserable and suicidal and i dont know how to help her . Thing is her parents never let go of the marriage thing and my guess is theyre keeping her here until she's old enough to marry him , by then the marriage offer will probably be presented to her as a last resort ( marry him and be a good girl and you get your passport and can go back but only with him ) . She tried pleading with for months now and is now desperate. She thought shed be kept here until school starts as punishment but shes now been here nearly 3 months and it's not looking good . Please help what can she do . P.S: Excuse the bad grammar/punctuation English isn't my first language . [link] [comments] |
Do I have rights to speak to my daughters doctor? Posted: 26 Aug 2019 07:33 AM PDT Throwaway for obvious reasons, going to explain as much as I can without giving to much identifying information. I was always a single mother, judge of you will but I was unsure when my child was born which of two men were the father. One came to the birth and put his name on the birth certificate, but just before my child's first birthday a DNA test revealed he was not the father at which point I notified the other man. He said he wasn't in a good place and she would be better off without him in her life. I tried a few more times to at least just get him to meet her but he refused. Fast forward 6 years and he finally decides to be a part of her life and they begin video chatting and he comes to visit for her birthday. In November of last year, my child made allegations of sexual abuse by a man who was not my partner or related but living short term in my home to a classmate, I was totally unaware and devastated. I was investigated you police and CYS at the time and cleared of any wrongdoing, and immediately put her into therapy. We had already arranged for my daughter to spend the summer with her father and continued with that plan (I live in PA, him in NC). She was to return on August 18th, but on August 12th he informed me he didn't think she was safe with me and wouldn't be returning her, at which point I found out he had been granted emergency custody by NC on the 9th, with me only allowed supervised visitation in the presence of her counselor. I filed for custody in PA and where we currently stand is the judges in both states are meeting today to decide jurisdiction. Now is the current situation. Thursday a rep from CPS in NC called and chewed me out, ridiculed me for having a public defender, and told me my child was happy, healthy, and well taken care of and she was going to recommend the child stay in NC. Less than 24 hours later the father contacted me saying she was suicidal and threatening to harm her step siblings and being admitted to a mental hospital and he needed her insurance information because he never got insurance for her. He is barely updating me on what is going on, all I got yesterday was a text saying "she's fine." Is it within my rights to ask to speak to someone at the hospital treating her? I just want to know what is going on with her and if she is doing okay Edit: and to clarify why I am not asking my attorney, I am trying but she is a public defender. It has taken her days to return my phone calls in the past and I have been dealing with not knowing what is going on with my daughter since Saturday so just hoping I can get some insight anywhere Edit 2: this is all new to me, I have never been in any legal proceedings before, and I guess public defender might not be the correct title to clear that up. Pro bono attorney or legal aid attorney I guess is what I have. Also, I know you have no reason to believe me, but if it makes a difference to you I have signed statements from teachers, documentation from the police (including a lie detector test I submitted to) and her therapist (which they claim I never even got her one) and CYS from my county from their investigation to disprove every claim they made on the emergency custody filings other than the abuse happening while she was in my care, which I will never forgive myself for, and as I said it was documented by her therapist that she was making a lot of good progress before she went with him and he got emergency custody of her almost a month ago and hasn't even gotten her health insurance yet Edit 3/semi resolution: I finally got to speak with my attorney who shared the facility she is currently in and told me that it is within my rights to speak to both the therapist she has been seeing regularly and the counselor at the facility she is currently in [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Aug 2019 08:59 AM PDT I have a cell phone store business in Houston, TX USA, and we are on a commercial lease at a small shopping plaza, and there used to be another business place next to us (the wall is connected) they have recently moved out a few months ago. There has since been two burglary incidents since they moved out. The burglars break the glass door on property next to us, to try to break the wall to get into my store. Everything valuable inside the store is stored and secured in a big metal safe overnight. I also have have security alarm system and burglar bars protecting the front glass windows of the store. So everything is protected on the premises we are in. The problem is the vacant property. On the first incident I paid to fix the wall damage, and the property manager paid to fix the glass door (although he tried to get me to fix the door but I told him that's damage on his property they broke in through.) after this incident the very next day, I extended my security alarm system to the property next to us by installing two motion sensors on their property, so if anyone breaks, I get an alert and police gets notified immediately. Two weeks later another incident happened, but the burglars only did minor damage to the wall this time due to the alarm that made them flee. So again, I paid for the wall, and the property owner tried to get me to pay for the glass door damage, but I didn't agree. After this incident, Now 1 week later he calls me saying I owe him $300 for the second incident because he's not gonna keep fixing the glass if they try to break in again. My question is, is it right for him to ask me to pay for the glass damage? His argument is that they keep breaking to get to my store, since I have a cell phone business, and that's what the burglars are after. For reference, there are no security officers on the property. The whole area in general is having issues with burglaries, the hair salon next to us has been broken in to 5 times in less than 2 months (they had no burglar bars or alarm system) What should I do, should I pay for the glass? Or am I right in refusing? I'm also afraid that my lease is expiring in March 2020, can he refuse to renew? or can he increase the monthly rent, due to me refusing to pay for the glass? Posted: 26 Aug 2019 09:48 AM PDT I took my car (2000 Toyota Corolla CE) in for an oil change yesterday at Tires Plus yesterday, and once I got up to speed on the freeway heading home, my hood flipped up at 65 mph and caved in my windshield. I was able to drive it back to Tires Plus after punching my hood straight enough to latch back down, but I'm not sure how to proceed. Their regional manager or something called me this morning asking what I wanted to do. He said they could replace the hood and windshield, leaving me with a fucked up roof, or they could pay me out and keep the car. The blue book on it is only $1500, but that's less than ideal considering the car only had ~149k miles on it and was fully operational otherwise. Could I be entitled to more money than blue book? I called my insurance (State Farm) and they gave me the 3rd option of filing a claim through them and letting them pursue things. Any advice on what I should do? I luckily wasn't hurt and didn't get into an accident, and they took responsibility for it verbally and even today said the hood latch was fully functional. But getting paid out only for the blue book value would suck considering the car had a lot of life left in it and the whole inconvenience of finding a new car, and them repairing it but now having a fucked up roof is also not ideal. Any help would be greatly appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Aug 2019 08:52 PM PDT This happened yesterday and I am fuming. I'm from Ontario Canada. I live in off campus student housing near the university I attend. I lived with 4 other girls in a 5 bed 2 bathroom apartment. The management has screwed me over other times but it's whatever because the lease is almost over and I didn't resign. So now it's just a matter of waiting out the last month. After my last exam, Aug 13th I went home for a week and a half (about a 2 hour drive away from my uni). The last day to move out was 1:00pm on Aug 27th so I planned to go back on Aug 24th to my apartment to move out my stuff and move it to a storage unit and return the key and laundry card. We (me, my sister and her friend) get to my apartment around noon on the 24th and all the my items left in the fridge, countertop, cupboards and shoe rack are all gone. The fridge and all the cupboards are completely empty and so are the 2 bathrooms. No notice was given about entering the unit. I'm super confused cuz I have no idea where my stuff is. I check my bedroom and all my stuff in there was untouched. What I think happened was that management came into the unit and started cleaning up early to get ahead of the move-in rush in September. I think they mistakenly thought we had all already moved out. So I go to their main office to explain the situation and find out what happened. I talked to 3 different people and they all tell me the same thing: -They have a master spreadsheet which tracks when contractors enter each unit and no one from there side was sent to our unit. -They suggest that one of my roommates have hired some cleaning crew and they removed my belongings from the common area. -They refuse to let me view any security footage and tell me to file a police report for all my missing items. I let my roommates know about what happened on our group chat. They all seem confused and shocked and say that none of them threw out anything or hired any cleaning crew. They are also upset as items they left in the common area have been thrown out and none of them are in town so they cant get answers. One of them tells me that she went to the gym on the 21st for an hour, came back and all the stuff was gone. She asked them where it went and all they said was theyre sorry. She moved out that same night and didnt mention any of this to us I dont know what to do now. I plan on filing a police report for my valuable goods that were thrown out but I dont know how and I'm pretty sure they wont be able to recover it. I want to be compensated for all the stuff that was thrown out and want them to be reprimanded for entering my place without giving 24 hours notice and then lying about not entering. The problem is I dont have any evidence. This management has been so terrible since I moved in and I'm tired of being mistreated like this. Please give advice! [link] [comments] |
[Iowa] Is there any recourse I can take for someone shooting my cat? Posted: 26 Aug 2019 09:35 AM PDT I'm in Polk county Iowa. My four year old cat was shot and died yesterday. It was either a .22 or a pellet gun that went straight through from right to left in his chest. The pellet or bullet was still there when they x-rayed. We filed a police report and the officer at first was confident it was a pellet but then was unsure after looking closer at the X-ray. Should we go around the neighborhood looking for people that own a pellet gun or .22? Or someone that might have seen/heard anything? I know it's not really feasible to find the person that did it but I need to do something. [link] [comments] |
Apartment complex says I can’t have AC, even though my lease mentions fixing my ac if it breaks?? Posted: 26 Aug 2019 11:39 AM PDT Okay so this sounds a little complicated. I got this apartment in Jan 2019 in winter, so I didn't notice then. I know not all places are required to have AC. I live in CO. But it's been in the 90s since June, but it's finally making me go crazy. I have two fans and a swamp cooler that doesn't work well. I work as a night RN and I need my sleep and I'm losing sleep because it's so hot, people depend on me to be fully rested so this is a huge problem. The manager of this apartment complex says I can't have an ac unit because it's a, "safety issue" with the electricity. Only the upstairs units have ac, the units downstairs do not. Ironically, their office is also downstairs, and they have a window unit. I looked all on the lower floors and no one has a portable with a hose or a window unit. Besides the office for the staff. I was never told that units downstairs don't have ac, when I signed the lease. It's stated everything was included minus cable and Internet. In fact, the only thing that is stated in my lease about ACs, is that it's not an emergency and they will fix broken ACs during business hours. I met with an attorney and after he went through my my lease he said he didn't see anything against ACs, only what was stated previously, above. So there is nothing binding me not to have one. I guess I'm just afraid of the backlash that I know this apartment company will harass me. I'm not in any position to move out right now. It was 97 degrees yesterday and I've had it. I even offered to pay for the electricity the portable will use. My question is how should I respond when they notify me asking me to remove it? I was told to somehow contact the department of building codes and ask for an inspection for habitability if there truly are electrical issues that won't even support a portable unit. But I looked and looked and I don't know how to get contact info, despite finding the website for my county. I apologize for how disorganized this whole post looks, but I just want to be able to sleep for the remaining summer months. Any advice or suggestions are forever appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Aug 2019 07:45 PM PDT I submitted this on an Ex-Mormon subreddit and I was recommended here so I will be repeating the same post in hopes of some help. I am currently living in Cedar City, Utah, 84720 The Church: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (The Mormons) TLDR: I was in a photoshoot at 14 and the church keeps using my photos and I want them to stop. I left the church a couple of months ago and have been in the process of getting my records changes when my mother sends me a link to the church website where a picture of me is on the very front of the website. It was from a photoshoot I did for the church when I was about 14, too young to sign my own contract so I'm pretty sure my parents signed on but I don't remember signing one. I would like to look for legal help in getting my photos no longer used on anything church-related but I don't know where to go and I am also a very broke college student. If any of you know of who I can go to and can give me their contact info that would be much appreciated. Thank you all very much. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Aug 2019 06:37 AM PDT One of my old jobs called me to let me know they were going out of business and wanted me to come back on payroll and help out during the summer. I've put in 250+ hours since beginning of July. I've just been made aware that all employees are receiving a severance package, including someone hired on the same time I came back. The last day of business is September 1st, am I entitled to a severance and how do I approach this with my boss? [link] [comments] |
Can my landlord do this? Remove elevator and fine each tennant for damage? Posted: 26 Aug 2019 01:19 PM PDT [IOWA] I just received this poorly written and angry letter from my leasing company. What is the legality of this? The three things that stand out to me are the arbitrary fine of $1000, billing the repairs to every tenant regardless of their involvement and the removal of the elevator. Seems fishy to me. I just had a doctors office try to scam me for money? Posted: 26 Aug 2019 08:48 AM PDT So please forgive me for any errors. This just happened and I'm still a little shaken up. I just got a new health insurance and scheduled an appointment with my new pcp. There was a few things that seemed weird but I just figured it was a really small doctors office. But essentially before they took me back I had to pay $30. Which was for my copay and I understand that. After I went back the doctor was incredibly rude. She quite literally screamed at me about how understaffed they were and how insurance companies fuck them over. She then started asking me how much I could pay her in a very aggressive way. She kept asking if I could pay $300 then $280 and so on. Eventually she got down to asking repeatedly why I couldn't pay her $160. I kept trying to explain that this was a first check up appointment and when I booked no one told me that I needed to pay anything aside from the copay. So then she drags me out of the office and starts screaming at her front desk lady. I told her I had no other money to give and she followed me out of the building yelling. There was more and I will write something that makes more sense later. Essentially I'm just wondering who do I talk to about this? Is there someone I can report her to? Edit: location: PA Edit: alrighty y'all so I called my insurance and told them the whole story and they're taking it very seriously. When I first made the appointment I only looked up reviews on google and there was only 6. After doing more research I do think this woman might have been on or selling drugs. When she was asking for money she did mention adderal and a medical marijuana card (which I quite literally never asked for). People online actually had similar experiences. If it wasn't crazy enough, she actually responded to all of the negative reviews in the most unprofessional manner I've ever seen in my life. Some people mentioned she could have been asking for the money for like blood work and things like that. It wasn't that though because start to finish this all happened in like 15-20 minutes. I went in, she started acting crazy, didn't even ask why I was there, and asked for money. No blood work or literally anything done. Anyways, I'm definitely glad I reported her. It will take time for everything to be processed but I'm interested to see what my health insurance does. Today has been intense. Thank you for all of the help and advise! [link] [comments] |
Need some advice about possibly being subpoenaed Posted: 26 Aug 2019 12:00 PM PDT I've been following a case of someone I used to be in a relationship with. He was arrested on federal charges back in December and has been in jail pending trial ever since. I knew the trial was coming up soon so I checked on the case today and I was shocked to see his attorney is asking the judge to subpoena me. I've had no contact with him whatsoever and I'm very surprised the defense wants me ask me any questions. I was more expecting the prosecution to contact me. My questions: 1) I don't live in the state where the defendant is being tried. I live in Ohio. If I am subpoenaed do I have to appear? This is a federal case so I'm not sure of the laws. 2) Do they cover any travel expenses? It's a little over an 8 hour drive and flying is an option but I don't want to pay. 3) Once an attorney requests a subpoena to a judge, how long does it take for them to review if they subpoena someone? 4) If I am subpoenaed and do go, do I HAVE to see the person in the courtroom? I'd rather not. [link] [comments] |
[MD] Is my management company violating the lease? Can we ask for cheaper rent? Posted: 26 Aug 2019 10:27 AM PDT I'm in Baltimore. My SO and I rented a property that was listed as having central air. When we got there (late July/early August) the AC was broken; our management person said an HVAC guy would come Sunday (we moved in Wednesday) but they never came. Instead the landlord, who we are not permitted to contact, installed window units while we were out (with our permission). It's been a month and I sent an email asking when they planned on fixing the HVAC; management said "the landlord is focusing on fixing the leaks right now to prevent damage to the property and will fix the AC next," but refuses to give us a timeline. We think they are awaiting for autumn to avoid it altogether. It's not the end of the world, but central air was listed on the rental listing and is a primary reason we chose this property over others. The air units let tiny bugs in and have disrupted how we planned to organize the house (our desks get a faceful of cold air). Our lease also says that a washer/dryer is left "at the convenience of the landlord" and that they won't fix it if it breaks, but there's no washer dryer here. When I asked the management person she said that the rental listing said no washer-dryer and that the lease we signed was just the standard lease for all of their properties. We are worried they will try to say we made off with it or something. Also, since a lease is a legal document, can they really do that? Just make us sign something that doesn't reflec the reality of the property? How can it hold any legal sway then, if things can be selectively read? The listing is down so we can't even compare with that. It did say we had central air... These problems aren't really big enough to warrant moving out but we are definitely documenting them in case things get worse. My questions are: Does this constitute any sort of tenant's rights or lease violation? False advertising? We were also considering asking for cheaper rent because of all the problems — is this something one can do, and how would we go about it? Sorry for formatting problems/terseness —I'm on mobile. Thank you in advance. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Aug 2019 10:03 AM PDT As the title says, we've been complaining for months about water damage, water leaks after rain and black mould in the house and the landlord has refused to send anyone for repairs. Today whilst my dad was in the kitchen part of the ceiling collapsed extremely close to him. This was the area underneath the bathroom. I took pictures and told my dad not to call the landlord yet. The problem there are other places in the house that, at least on the surface, look like their structural integrity is compromised. In short I want to sue the landlord for endangering the life of me and my family. How do i proceed with this? edit: here are the pictures i took https://imgur.com/a/JoHlHk9 [link] [comments] |
Firearm Seizure After Baker Act- Florida Posted: 26 Aug 2019 08:14 AM PDT My girlfriend, who lives with me, was Baker Acted Sunday morning as a result of suicidal ideations.. Her mother and I took her to the hospital and it was voluntary, so it wasn't like the cops came and took her. It appears that she's going to be spending at least a week in care at a mental health hospital. My guns are secured in a digital safe with no backup key. I changed the code to something she'll never guess or know. So I'm not concerned with her being able to access them, but however, I am concerned that the State may seize them or attempt to seize them via the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act or any another law. They are not technically her guns, but I'm unsure if that really matters considering she'll eventually be released to come home. It may sound petty or insensitive but hunting season is coming up, and it's a significant activity in my life. I also have a substantial collection which is quite valuable. I'm leaning towards moving my collection towards a friends house for the time being, but it takes up quite a bit of safe and am also not very willing to confide much of the details to people for obvious reasons. Can anyone offer any insight into this matter? **Edit** Guns are being moved for an indefinite amount of time at this point. I would still like to know what my rights are in this situation. Posted: 26 Aug 2019 09:22 AM PDT [Texas] This weekend a friend and I stayed in an Airbnb. We dropped off our stuff and went out for dinner and drinks. We stayed out pretty late, and when we got back to the apartment it was filled with the scent of natural gas. I called the non-emergency line who sent the fire department to investigate. The fire department showed up and took a reading in the apartment, informing us that it was unsafe to stay. The host showed up shortly after and said "I know exactly what it is, I was doing work in the apartment earlier and must have forgotten to turn off the valve". She then casually moved a piece of furniture and turned off a valve. I told her I refused to stay and she said I was being dramatic but could leave if I wanted. I am working with Airbnb to receive a refund for this stay, as well as trying to get a report from the fire department (they said it could take 2-3 days). My biggest concern is the fact that if we had just a few more drinks, we could have just gone in and passed out and never realized the severity of the leak. My friend who was with me said she was so tired she hadn't thought too much about the smell until I told her what it was. I guess I just feel like this was something more serious than "oh, I forgot to close a valve". It could have had serious health consequences depending on the volume that was coming out of that open valve. I'm curious if this is some form of neglect that should be pursued. [link] [comments] |
[WI] Is church youth group considered an extracurricular activity. Posted: 26 Aug 2019 06:35 AM PDT 4 years post settlement with 50/50 legal and physical of our two children. In the divorce settlement there is a statement that says both parties must agree to all extracurricular activities for the kids. Ex-spouse wants to force my oldest daughter to attend the youth group for the church they attend during their placement. Child does not want to go and I also agree that she should not go. I have informed my former spouse that I do not agree with our daughter attending the church youth group. My daughter has been informed that "she has to go" and ex-spouse is ignoring my objection. So, my questions are, does youth group count as an extracurricular, and if so, how can I ensure my objection is honored? Do I have to wait until my former spouse forces our daughter to go and then file contempt or is there a way I can prevent it before that point? Edit: To clarify, the language specifically states, "Decisions in the following areas will be made jointly: ... Non-School Activities". Sorry for the confusion. [link] [comments] |
HS refuses to release transcripts for custody reasons. Posted: 26 Aug 2019 10:26 AM PDT My brother is 18 years old. His dad won custody of him as a kid but he's decided he does not want to live with him...he just moved in with my mom and I and is starting his final year of high school, but is being prohibited from taking the appropriate classes. His dad seemed fine, they were in good communication when he thought he's was sitting around doing nothing but got upset about him starting school and contacted his old one so they won't give him his transcripts. Is this legal? Since he's an adult shouldn't he be able to get transcripts at will, live with who he wants and go to school? Isn't it wrong for him to not be in school/or grade appropriate classes? His dad has a history of lying and withholding info/docs to control his dependence Ex: he told my brother who'd been trying to get a drivers permit since 16 that it costs $150 (which he needs a birth certificate for), and that he doesn't have/can't get a birth certificate bc his name is too long (wants him to change last names) both he understood to be a lie after moving w us and getting both in one day no problem...even would make him buy his own food/clothes before 18 so he couldn't save to move out or buy his own transportation...the most recent development is that he'd only let him get his transcripts if he changed his last name, my brother explained that he's taking classes anyway and his dad hung up on him....online resources seemed to be catered towards minors in these situations so I'm not sure what to believe. Laws for DC & MD I'd appreciate any feedback of personal experience or legal knowledge regarding everything... Thanks [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Aug 2019 11:22 AM PDT I went in for a free consultation for some invisible teeth aligners with a very popular company who ships the aligners to you directly. In order to book the free consultation, I had to put a credit card on file so that they could charge a fee in event of a no show or last minute cancellation. During the consultation I was asked if I would prefer to pay them off in full, or if I would be wanting to do financing. I told them I would prefer financing. They had me check off the "financing" option and sign at the bottom. This was the only "document" I was shown, it did not look like a contract of any sort. There was no fine print. It did not look like an actual agreement with any sort of terms and conditions. It basically had two boxes, "pay in full" or "financing" and a line underneath to sign. I had a scan done and was told that I would receive my estimated before and after photos and treatment plan in an email within the week and that I would not have any money withdrawn until I made a decision. They withdrew the down payment from my credit card that they had on file, and I received a signed contract via email. I never was shown, never signed (or asked to sign), any contract. There was even initials on sections stating I understood certain terms. None of these terms were discussed with me in the office whatsoever. Above the signature line it states: "Notice to the Borrower: Do not sign this Contract before reading the same or if it contains blank spaces. You are entitled to a copy of this Contract. Under the present law you have the right to pay off in advance the balance owed under the Contract. In those cases the principal owed as of the date of payment, plus any balance to cover charges or interest accrued to that date, shall be cancelled. I/We have reviewed the Terms and Conditions of this Contract. I/we understand that I/we am/are responsible for payment of any and all obligations under this Contract, and agree to the Terms and Conditions of this Contract. I have received a copy of this Contract." The signature on the document is not even slightly close to my actual signature so I know it was not taken from the other form I signed. It looks like the guy just wrote my name in by hand (I can't tell if it was an attempt to actually SIGN my name) but this contract clearly outlines that this should be signed by me. I feel like it would be a completely different situation had they just typed my name into this section, but since it is hand written it definitely looks as though they are trying to pass it off as my signature. The only hand written things on this contract are "my signature", and the signature of "the provider". I called the company and asked for an explanation, they could not give me one. He said he would refund the order, but I still have not received my money back. I asked him what would be done about the legal document that had my signature forged by one of their employees, he said since they refunded the order I would not owe them money and to just not worry about it. Well I am pissed off, and I am going to "worry about it". It is a crime to forge someone's signature, and there now exists a contract stating that I owe them this money. I have had friends tell me to go to the police and report that my signature was forged. I'm not quite sure how to proceed. Also I am not sure if I should actually post the contract for you all to review or if that's a bad idea if I will be taking legal action against them. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
