Daily FI discussion thread - August 06, 2019

Please use this thread to have discussions which you don't feel warrant a new post to the sub. While the Rules for posting questions on the basics of personal finance/investing topics are relaxed a little bit here, the rules against memes/spam/self-promotion/excessive rudeness/politics still apply!

Have a look at the FAQ for this subreddit before posting to see if your question is frequently asked.

Since this post does tend to get busy, consider sorting the comments by "new" (instead of "best" or "top") to see the newest posts.

Unexpected FIRE thoughts in a blog post from an exited startup founder

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 01:38 PM PDT

Was going through my feed and started reading this post by a startup founder that recently exited... with nothing left for her after the investors were paid out (sadly, a not-at-all-uncommon experience.) What I didn't expect was the post to turn into more of a commentary on her attempts to live a FIRE lifestyle. Thought you all might find it interesting.

Which retirement plan is better for early retirement? 401k or roth?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 03:47 PM PDT

I'm 21 and recently started my first real job. I need helps deciding between 401k and roth 401k and google didn't really help much. I want to (if possible) retire at 35. I'm in the 24% tax bracket, not married. I'm living quite frugally (to some people's standard, I think), last year I only spent 9k on everything and it's going to be roughly the same this year. Any additional advices on how to retire early is greatly appreciated.

Any dutch people moving towards FIRE

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 03:11 AM PDT

Hi, I'm just starting to move toward fire. I've been pretty poor the majority of my leave but made some steps and have a higher than average income now.

I've been reading a lot of tips here, but some of them can be applied to me because I'm from the Netherlands so I'm looking for people with the same ambitions or people who already achieved FIRE who are also from the Netherlands

    States with greatest FI opportunity

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 06:44 AM PDT

    Good morning fellow FI-ers

Been spinning my wheels on this one...but in one's quest to be FI, is there a state in the union which would propel one to FI faster? Living in Texas, I've been blessed with no state income tax and a booming economy, but property taxes which are a bear

NY and Cali get a bad rap on taxes but I'm sure FI-ers who live or were able to FI there will defend it gloriously. Please share

I've also seen positive reviews on South Dakota, Wyoming and Washington. I'm guessing the biggest drawbacks would be A. Income tax B. Property Tax C. State Sales Tax D. Overall Cost of Living -within overall cost of living:

    A. Utilities B. Transportation C. Food

Maybe this thread has been started already but wanted feedback on the research you all have seen
