Vanguard Reopens Dividend Growth Fund - August 1 Press Release. Posted: 01 Aug 2019 09:15 PM PDT For fans of Dividend Growth investing: Vanguard Reopens Dividend Growth Fund VALLEY FORGE, PA (August 1, 2019)—Vanguard today announced the reopening of the $36.6 billion Vanguard Dividend Growth Fund (VDIGX) to all investors, effective immediately. Vanguard closed the fund to most new accounts in July 2016, seeking to protect the interests of existing shareholders by reducing cash flow after a period of rapid growth. Cash flow has subsequently subsided and market conditions have changed since the fund's closing. "After careful analysis of the fund's current cash flows and asset level, and following consultation with the fund's advisor, we're confident that there is ample capacity to reopen the Fund," said Matthew Brancato, head of Vanguard's Portfolio Review Department, who noted that the reopening should not be construed by investors as a "buy signal" for the fund or dividend stocks in general. Google parent Alphabet overtakes Apple to become new king of cash Posted: 01 Aug 2019 02:27 PM PDT The corporate world has a new king of cash. The title for the company with the biggest financial reserves, held by Apple for a decade, has passed to Google's parent, Alphabet, according to figures released in recent days. The switch in leadership follows a concerted effort by the iPhone maker to reduce its liquid reserves, six years after it first came under pressure from activist investor Carl Icahn to pay out more of its cash hoard. Apple's holdings of cash and marketable securities, net of debt, has fallen to $102bn, down from a peak of $163bn at the end of 2017. Alphabet's financial reserves have been moving in the opposite direction. At $117bn, its cash pile has risen by almost $20bn over the same period. Writing cash secured puts in the times of turmoil Posted: 02 Aug 2019 12:44 AM PDT Say Donny goes ballistic on China and Xi goes ballistic on the US, or we discover that all those leveraged buyouts are not such a great idea, or whatever else messes up the markets. I obviously want to buy more stock (and hodl for 10-20 years) in such times - it's cheaper! That's why I'm holding bonds in my portfolio. Does it make sense to write cash secured puts instead of straight up buying? Seems like a no-brainer, especially given that implied volatility is through the roof when there's blood in the streets, which increases the option premium I'd collect. My intent is to get assigned on those puts. What are the downsides? What kind of price reduction would I typically see by writing cash secured puts on which I'm getting assigned, versus straight buying SPY? Warren Buffet seems to be into such kinds of plays, and this is a lot coming from a smart guy who called derivatives "financial weapons of mass destruction". [link] [comments] |

Posted: 01 Aug 2019 07:26 PM PDT So from what I understand if I'm invested in bonds and a recession hits, the fed/banks should lower interest rates and bond prices should increase. My question is, with rates already so low, is there enough upside to risk losing out on a year of gains in the stock market? Can bond prices really increase that much (assuming interest rates won't fall much below zero if at all). And if bonds do make sense, do I need to buy actual bonds or can I buy bond etfs? Should I buy 30 year bonds or 10 year bonds etc.? [link] [comments] |
ISM manufacturing index falls to 51.2 in July; construction spending down 1.3% in June Posted: 01 Aug 2019 07:29 AM PDT The U.S. manufacturing sector expanded in July, but the pace of growth decelerated to its weakest in nearly three years stemming from a broad decline in activities from the month before, an industry report released on Thursday showed. The Institute for Supply Management (ISM) said its index of national factory activity fell to 51.2, the lowest reading since August 2016. U.S. construction spending fell by the most in seven month in June as investment in private construction projects tumbled to a more than 1.5-year low. [link] [comments] |

Powell Suggests Fed Embarking on 1990s-Style Mini Easing Cycle Posted: 01 Aug 2019 05:10 AM PDT Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell hearkened back to the central bank's 1990's policy successes by suggesting he can sustain the record long U.S. economic expansion with just a modest reduction in interest rates. Powell's remark raised comparisons to 1995-96 and 1998, when Alan Greenspan headed the Fed. In each instance, the central bank ended up cutting rates three times in a successful effort to prolong an economic upswing that until this year was the longest. If Powell succeeds with his strategy, that may end up being beneficial for investors, the president and -- the chairman made clear -- the American people, including many who are just starting to see the fruits of a super tight jobs market. Posted: 01 Aug 2019 06:25 AM PDT Even with the rate decrease, it "feels" like the economy is slowing down. Whether it be work (in the construction industry) or home sales, it seems to be the beginning stages of a slow down. I am not sure if this is a regional (Midwest US) thing or even a thing at all, but wanted to get your thoughts on it. [link] [comments] |
