Bicyclist vs Car - He will pay for new bike in exchange for not filing a claim

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 02:54 PM PDT

So last Thursday, my husband was leaving work on his bike when he was hit in the parking lot by a 17 year old motorist. Husband was wearing a helmet, and when he fell, he landed on his coccyx (tailbone) and rolled. It was a notorious blind turn in this parking lot where this occurred and they literally just didn't see each other until the last minute. Kid puts on his brakes, skids, bam.

Police were called, report was filed, ambulance checked my husband out and saw no injuries. He got the motorist's info (name, phone number, insurance policy number, etc.). My husband's boss saw the ambulance, and when he came out and learned what happened, he gave my husband Friday off to recover. This job does not accrue sick leave, so this is a day off without pay.

I got home and made an appointment to go to Urgent Care, and when I asked if he had filed a claim with the motorist's insurance, he said no. He was very shaken up and kinda shut down on me, so I had to take care of a lot of this stuff myself. Urgent Care did an x-ray of his pelvis, didn't see any fractures, but forwarded the to a radiologist for a second opinion.

On Friday, motorist's dad texts my husband and offers to buy him a new bike. Sounds nice at first, but I still suggested filing the claim since he has been off work and on pain meds that make him drowsy. We agreed to meet with dad on Saturday to get a new bike. I called his kid's insurance that same Saturday and filed a claim for the lost wages without mention of the bike, since I figured that was the proper way to go about it. From what I have read, you should always file a claim if there is injury or loss of property and/or wages, and my husband experienced all of those.

We go to meet the guy and he seems nice, but then he points out that he got email notification about the claim being filed. He tells me that, since he agreed to buy my husband a new bike "out of the goodness of his heart," that the claim is unnecessary. Red flag #1.

He further stated that he hadn't filed a claim with his insurance for his son's accident, and that he would prefer not to get insurance involved. He tells me that his son's car, a Mercedes, has $1000 in damage from the incident, for which he is paying out of pocket. He went on to politely shift blame of the accident to my husband (who is still out of it at this point so I am doing all the talking myself), and that if we were to file a claim, he is sure my husband would be found at fault.

He then says he's willing to get us a bike of equal or greater value if we drop the claim. At this point, I notice that he is recording our conversation without our permission, but I don't say anything. He keeps insisting that my husband just wasn't paying attention, and based this assertion off of the fact that the police report did not assign fault.

At this point, I am debating whether to rescind the claim and just take the guy's offer for a new bike and be done with the ordeal. Again, because my husband is on meds and just generally disengaged from the complexities involved, I have no choice but to handle it myself.

My husband has not had a car in 14 years and he does not drive mine, so he does not have car insurance. He is concerned about if he is determined to be at fault for the accident, and if it will put us on the financial hook for repairs to the kid's Mercedes if dad decides to sue in retaliation for us continuing with our claim.

My issue is this... do I'll go through with the claim, or cut our losses and accept a new bike and move on?

Can I negotiate my renewal premium with Geico?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 03:54 AM PDT

So, my renewal with Geico is due in a few weeks..They are quoting me about $900 more per month than what I used to pay. I obviously can't pay it, since it's basically more than my rent. I'm in NC.

Over the past 5 years, my husband's had: 1 non at fault accident (car backed into his parked car)

I've had: 1 at-fault, not serious (parking lot incident, the other driver and I both at fault $1,300) 1- not at fault (hit and run, other driver never found/charged and I only had liability at the time..so Geico ended up not paying anything out)

We apparently had accident forgiveness from Geico, so I thought that at least one of these wouldn't be taken into consideration. Is there anything I can do? I've been shopping around and comparing quotes..Most of them looking to be in the $300-500 range per month. Credit scores are above 650.

    $12,000/year car insurance

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 09:50 PM PDT

(Posted in personalfinance but was recommended here)

Hi, I'm not sure if this is the right place for this but I would like to know if paying over $12,000 a year for car insurance for 3 cars per year is normal/sounds right?

My dad is paying this right now for 3 cars with full coverage each (1 lease and 2 owned cars)

    The lease is a 2016 es350 and the two owned ones are a 2007 tC and a 2010 Hs250h.

The drivers are 2 males (54 and 22) and two females (52 and 18) The 18 year old female had an accident last year but aside from that everything is clean.

    Location: Florida

Would he be able to get a better price from a difference insurance agency or is this price the usual?

    Thanks for any help.

    Water in basement

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 07:45 PM PDT

I have water seeping into my basement. It's not coming through the walls, but where the floor and walls meet. Usually it doesn't accumulate, but lately puddles have been forming. I don't live in a flood area, and I don't have flood insurance. Is this something that can be covered by Homeowners Insirance?

Will statefarm use the drive safe and save beacon against us if we ever get into an accident?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 01:11 PM PDT

So, we got this drive safe and save beacon from statefarm that we can put in our car and it monitors how well we drive to give us a discount.

My question is, if there is an accident in the future, will statefarm use the data from that to deny a claim? For example, let's say when the accident happens, we were at 66 mph in a 65 zone. Will statefarm use that technicality against us to deny a claim?

I am just worried that the 5% discount they are giving us for using this may end up costing thousands of dollars later.

Got into accident. Insurance company not paying. Did I mess up? (PA, First post)

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 07:48 AM PDT

Hello. A while ago, I was driving home from work at night. There was a fallen tree blocking the right-hand lane. I slammed the brakes and swerved left to avoid it, stopping just short of the ledthand concrete barrier, no damage. Then, about a second or two later, I get rearended by a guy in a truck. My front bumper, rear bumper, trunk, and rear passenger tailight are all damaged. We pull over, I don't see a dent on his vehicle, we swap insurance, he seems like a nice guy. Fire department comes, inspects me and him, gets rid of the tree. I drive home.

I start a claim with Allstate. I took pictures to send them, and provided a statement for them, similar to the one above. About a day and a half ago, I get a call back saying that my claim was denied, saying that there wasn't enough evidence to support the claim, and to rub salt in the wound, that I had broken the rules of the road by swerving into the left lane without signaling. Because apparently running into a giant fallen tree trunk is better. And the fact that I didn't damage anything, and the person behind me did...it just makes me mad.

My questions here are, did I mess up somehow? Is there anything that can be done? I don't understand how photographic evidence that this happened and both parties saying it did can lead to nothing, especially because I'm not at fault. Can I appeal this?

If it's worth mentioning, I live in Pennsylvania. Thanks for any advice, suggestions, whatever in advance.

Which is better option for my printing equipment?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 08:58 PM PDT

    Hello people,

I apologize for my English. I want to ask you whom have better knowledge and experience in commercial insurances. Here is my question. I set up a small printing business and I have very expensive printing machine. I bought second hand and it was very cheap because of paid cash. I paid 1/5 price because of previous owner had bankrupted. Machine is working but sometimes it has service alert. I want to buy liability insurance. Today I learned that there is breakdown insurance. In that point I am so confused. Too many questions and concerns come to my mind.

For example; If my machine needs any service does break down policy cover cost of repairs? If it covers how much? Partial or full amount? Secondly when any natural disaster, vandalism situations or get robbed which insurance policy cover my loss? If my machine stolen does the insurance company pay me market value of machine or does they send appraisal and estimate value of business before selling policy?

    Thank you.

SF Drive Safe & Save questions

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 06:45 AM PDT

My insurance recently doubled when I went from driving an 11 year old car with no collision coverage, to a brand new lease with high coverage. Obviously I was well aware the insurance would increase, but I'm still looking to save where I can. I have a few questions for anyone who knows about DS&S.

    1. If I also have a discount for the Steer Clear program (discount for drivers under 21), can I also get the DS&S discount? Only wondering because it is basically the same thing...

    2. What is considered "night driving"? I've read some things that said 11p-5a, and others that say dusk to dawn. I work night shifts and take a lot of night classes so night driving is unavoidable.

    3. Does Apple CarPlay show up as phone usage?

    4. How much mobile data is used considering SF wants the background data usage to be on at all times to pick up driving?

    5. Is there a fee associated with owning the Bluetooth beacon?

    6. Overall is it worth it? Realistically what does the average person save?

    Thanks in advance!

How to Build a Book of Business

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 05:17 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

I am currently 22 years old and studied finance in college.

I have recently started to work for an advisor. He does manage money in managed accounts, helps with budgeting for clients for now and future, etc, but a decent portion of his business is selling life insurance.

I just got licensed in Life and Health (because I had to while working for him, but not what I want to do). Studying for SIE and Series 7 next week.

He is giving me a list of older clients who he no longer manages or prospective clients to work with. On top of us using a list of clients from a P&C agent.

But he also wants me to bring in a list of my clients (10 people). I am not very comfortable doing this to people I really know, nor do I really know how to. Nobody my age needs life ins or annuities obviously. And that is all I am limited to for the next few months at least.

How should I go about finding clients or what should I do?

My short term goal is eventually to get my series 7 and I believe 66 or 63 (not sure what I need atm) and try to work in a bank in wealth management. Such as working in BOA in the Merril Lynch sector.

Insurance offered lump sum payment for water damage 3 weeks after incident. Should i be skeptical?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 07:31 AM PDT

Backstory: Early last month we came home to a flooded house. Concrete slab no basement. Most of the main floor was covered in two inches of water. Insurance company found people to clean up the damage but its been nearly a month since the incident. The work finally was finalized to begin next week and the day after that, the insurance company called and offered a lump sum if we wanted to repair the damage ourselves, which we are capable of doing (did this work the first time when we bought and renovated). The concerning part is the amount of time that has passed since the incident. We did some work removing the floors in the wettest areas at the beginning to try and minimize the damage but weren't feeling like having no floors for 3+ weeks so we figured we would let the remediation company deal with whatever we couldn't. Are they trying to get away with something here? The initial damage was assessed at 18k (3 weeks ago) and the insurance company offered 21k to allow them to walk away from this and have us deal with it. Had we been offered that at the time of the incident, we would have been more inclined to accept. Now with the amount of time that's passed im not as comfident with that value, considering the potential for mould that now exists compared to initially. Any insights or opinions would be fantastic. Thanks all!

Should I file claim with my car insurance if I'm not at fault?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 12:26 PM PDT

A lady ran into a truck behind me which pushed him to hit me while we were both waiting to make a turn on the road. The lady seems to have the cheapest minimum insurance.

On my vehicle, the van lift gate and bumper is scratched and dented. The sensors on the bumper are not working either.

Do you recommend I file a claim with my USAA insurance? When I called them they just said "up to you". You can file with them or file with us. From reading online, I get the feeling I should claim with my insurance because the at fault party's insurance can take statements to get out of paying. The police told us she is at fault and gave her a ticket so I'm pretty sure they can't avoid not paying.

For a 2017 vehicle, I feel it should be able to be repaired by the dealer with OEM parts and reimbursed for diminished value. I don't know if the other insurance is willing to do that. It's not a big name insurance company. But if I claim with USAA, and have it repaired by the dealer, can the other insurance dispute the repair leaving me on the hook?

    Insuring non-stock car parts

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 11:08 AM PDT

Was wondering if anyone could help me out with an auto insurance question I had.

So I have some non-stock performance parts on my car that likely add up to a few thousand dollars total. Was wondering if 1. These parts would be covered on my current plan or 2. I'd need to tell my insurance company in order to have them covered.

Only thing I'm concerned about is if I tell them, would the rates go up? May not be worth it to get them covered in the long run.

    Thanks

    Check based off pictures?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 11:36 AM PDT

Long story short, I got rear ended Friday on my way to work. Trunk damaged and doesn't close, as well as bumper needs replacing and SRS light came on. I have no idea what's going on behind those panels. Later that day I got a call from their insurance (Safeco) and adjuster told me if I send her pictures of the damages and odometer she'll cut me a check. She said if I'll go get it fixed and if there is concealed damage she'll send me another one to cover extra fees.

This is my first accident ever. What do I tell her? I don't want get screwed over. I always thought that once they cut a check it's done deal and if repairs are more expensive they can tell you to fuck off since they already paid you.

Besides - it's an old beater work car so I want to get as big check as I can, pull the trunk out so I can close it and keep driving it like that.

I told her I'll call back Monday. What do I tell her?

    Thanks in advance.

    COBRA Initial Payment

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 09:59 AM PDT

I'm currently in the process for enrolling in COBRA and can't seem to find an answer on what exactly my initial payment should be. According to the paperwork, coverage was terminated on 7/15. If elected, COBRA would pick up on 7/16. If I'm looking to pay the first payment, would I need to submit 1.5x the monthly premium to cover half of July and all of August?
