    something actually cool about accounting

    Posted: 29 Aug 2019 04:27 PM PDT

while studying for FAR, I realized that there was never a moment where I was like "I will never use this knowledge, why am I learning this"

almost everything has a probability of coming up as relevant information sometime in the future as part of your career, whether it be inventory valuation, creating bond amortization schedules, hedge accounting, etc (stuff I actually saw at my internship before I started studying). that's actually kinda cool

I used to dread calculus or other technical topics because it was so abstract and it felt like there was no way I would ever need to find a derivative in real life for any reason

yep, just wanted to share. studying still blows though. kbye back to slaving away

edit: calculus derivative I mean of course, not financial instruments

Left public accounting after 1 year

    Posted: 29 Aug 2019 03:03 PM PDT

Couldn't be more happy. I hate public and it just got to the point where I said fuck it, no one should be this miserable at work. I got a Sr. Accounting job and a 20% raise. There is hope if you hate your job in public. Good luck!

    Naming pets with accounting-related terms...?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2019 10:32 AM PDT

Kind of off-topic, but my accountant gf wants to name our new kitten "gaap"- something I'm truly against with. She told me she would agree to change it if I come up with a better acctg name for it....

Any suggestions or maybe some of you guys have done this before?

    9/15 struggles

    Posted: 29 Aug 2019 11:37 AM PDT

I don't know how 9/15 creeped up so fast but I currently have several different managers breathing down my neck to finish things as soon as possible. I have over 40 hours of work I need to complete by Tuesday so I'll be working through Labor Day weekend. I'm so stressed and overwhelmed and I feel like no one else can even help me. Every project I have is an absolute mess and explaining it to someone sounds even worse.

I'm ready to leave public and have more consistency and less stress. I'm tired of being thrown projects of clients I've never worked on before and figuring out all the weird shit they booked wrong to accounts. Our clients books are all such a mess that I have to perform my own audit of their financials before I can even get it near suitable for the tax return. Mixed with me being a perfectionist getting anything done is taking forever.

I can't do it anymore. I don't even know if I'll make it through this deadline. Someone just offer advice please to help me survive this....

Quitting Big4 a month into it

    Posted: 29 Aug 2019 09:13 PM PDT

Currently at a big4 firm, got put on a shit engagement for most of the year and it doesn't look like they're willing to transfer me. Thoughts on quitting and going to another firm?

    Demand for accounting in NYC

    Posted: 29 Aug 2019 05:28 PM PDT

Aspiring accounting student who recently started university. For those of you in the NYC area, particularly Queens or Manhattan, is it difficult to find a decent accounting position straight out of college?
