Prospecting for a new job in sales

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 10:23 AM PDT

    Hey all,

Two initial questions for anyone who's done this in the past.

1st: Assuming it's a mid-sized company (about 40-50 employees), did you typically reach out directly to the top of the chain, or focus on who you believed you would be reporting to should you get the job you were looking for?

2nd: What was your typical messaging? I was thinking of something as straight forward as: Hello X, I know I'm catching you off-guard here so I'll be quick. I did my research on [the company], and I thought it would be a great mutual fit because of X, Y and Z. Would you be free to have a quick 10-minute chat on either [offer two options]?

    Thanks!

How to think like 150k + professional

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 10:05 AM PDT

Hello Sales, I have been selling technical testing services for electronic devices for about 4 years. Regular revenue quota for past 2years is roughly~1 to 1.3m , which has been met or exceeded. Although I currently don't even come close to making 150k annually, and I am not sure of my current position can support this- how would one attain a technical sales position that can provide the opportunity to make 150k a year? How did you facilitate such a transition?any advice you would be willing to share.

Looking for ideas on next steps.

Thanks for taking the time to review the post!

How do you maintain relationships with a 50% travel schedule?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 08:28 AM PDT

I'm in my 20s and beginning a new role that will require travel about 50% of the time and I'm worried about my ability to maintain close friendships and build a relationship, should that be something that becomes an option. What is your experience on this front?

Outside Sales Reps - how many cold call (visits) or appointments are you required to have each week?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 09:30 AM PDT

I'm curious about how many on-site calls or appointments other salespeople are required to make each week, as it seems like my personal requirements are excessive (prefer not to discuss any personal info tho).

How many visits are you required to do and what do you think is the optimal amount? Thank you! :)

Musings of a Missouri restaurant supply sales rep

    Posted: 02 Jul 2019 03:01 PM PDT

I used to work a desk job in LA but recently moved to Missouri and got myself a B2B sales position selling food and supplies to local restaurants, and I'm just surprised at how nice the people were here. Coming from busier cities I was expecting to be shot down several hundred times, but instead I'm holding up conversations once every ten calls with restaurant owners. Sometimes the owner even sat me down and we went through numbers together, and our conversation was amicable even when my product isn't what's needed.

I don't know what to say and my sales record still needs a lot of work, but I'm just surprised and all. Maybe it's the people, or the industry in general, or maybe Missouri's low living costs made restaurants less stressful, not sure.

Certainly is a nice change of pace.

How to Negotiate high performance comps?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 07:26 AM PDT

I just recruited by a company to build a new sales vertical, my track record has been stellar in similar previous roles.. but now as we negotiate comps i wanted community response. I am tasked with taking a premature vertical, doing about $8mill annual to $25!mil in 2yrs. Its definitely doable, average sale is $618k with a recurring $200k per year.

Once the business is up i then need to hire 3-5 additional reps to take over territories.

Current offer is $350k OTE $128 K base

What is the best way to join the growth party, i am relatively confident i will be able to get them to $20-$25 mil by 2021.

Anyone have experience or pitfalls i should avoid?

    Corporate Finance/Equipment Leasing advice?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 12:14 PM PDT

So I just started a job doing business development for a corporate finance company. We do project and equipment finance (leases and funding.) I really want to do well here but haven't really worked in business development or finance at all. Does anyone have any tips, pieces of advice or experience working in this industry?

(I'm 23, been doing inbound call center sales for about 3 years but I know this is a different beast completely.)

    New to cyber security sales

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 05:53 AM PDT

I am starting a new sales job next week in cyber security consulting sales (Risk assessments, penetration testing, employee trainings, etc.). I am pretty technical and super excited! Also hoping to keep confidence up with a couple quick wins. Mainly going to be cold outreaches. Does anyone have any advice on where the low(er) hanging fruit may be so I can start out on the right foot?

What's a good way to pitch a startup that has recently raised funding?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 05:45 AM PDT

I'm a freelance marketer and somebody recently suggested that I should keep an eye on funding raises in my niche industry, which certainly seems like a smart idea.

I'm struggling to come up with a good template for my CRM, though.

What's a good way to subtly suggest that now might be a great time to look towards shoring up your resources in my industry — and explain the ROI I could bring in return?
Any ideas for the template much appreciated!

    Cold calling CEO’s?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2019 07:40 PM PDT

Hey guys, when cold calling top CEO's selling B2B, do you get much more aggressive when you cold call?

Are CEO's, VP's, CMO's etc top decision makers talked to in a different way when you do your cold call intro?

Edit: Assuming I am already speaking to him, how do you speak to them in a way that you stand out?

Is draw against commission worth my time?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2019 09:55 PM PDT

I got a b2b job offer that is 25k base as a draw against commission, 15% gross sales commission. Its for an digital marketing and web design agency that targets medium to small businesses.

I have a lot of friends in sales but none of them have ever worked on draw against commission. I've worked sales my whole life and this is the first time I've ever seen it.

Fundamentally, is this even worth my time?

I am hoping this post will find someone working at a digital agency that can shed some transparency.

    A Consultative Approach

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 12:07 AM PDT

Hello fellow reps, execs and profit generators. I'm 26 and I'm currently working in an ecommerce startup.

Its my 2nd month and i feel like I'm hitting a wall in terms of learning though i came from a similar industry and background, i feel i do not understand the sales direction towards a consultative approach.

My personal style is geared towards more transactional and I'd love some input on how do i learn a more consultative role to speak to bigger groups and C Level decision makers.

    Thanks!

Driving Business Forward with a RevOps Framework

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 03:34 AM PDT

For many years, marketing, sales, and customer success departments have operated as disparate teams, each concerned only with the role each one plays in a particular stage of the customer journey. Operating under this paradigm, it is difficult to optimize revenue results. Gartner reports that "only 28% of sales leaders believe existing account management channels meet cross-selling account growth targets." However, as businesses today are learning, complete and integrated data can yield far more value throughout the consumer journey than compartmentalized data can. Organizations are now looking to break through these data silos and are turning to RevOps (Revenue Operations), a gamechanger for B2B organizations. With RevOps, companies are able to unify siloed customer-facing teams and address the customer at each stage of their journey -- from initial purchase, usage, follow-up, to renewals, and upsells that meet a particular customer's specific and evolving needs.

Anyone work for Vivint or have any info about them?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2019 07:53 PM PDT

Hi, I am a Security System technician(Alarms/CCTV/Home automation) who wants to transition into Security System Sales. I would like to stay with my current company, but in case they don't accept me, my next choice was Vivint. I have seen their alarm equipment in the field, and was impressed, but I also read some bad customer reviews. Anyone work as a rep for them? I am 41, so would I fit in with the other reps?

    Thanks in advance!

What are the best bluetooth earbuds for calls?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2019 03:03 PM PDT

So I am looking for some good quality bluetooth (wired or not) earbuds for sales calls. I am not a big fan of the airpods, they don't fit well in my ears. I am not sure how well they are when taking calls in a semi-noisy environment, but a friend said they were okay at best. What do you recommend?

EDIT: I see a lot of recommendations for office headsets like Plantronics etc. I have one of those, I am only looking for a blutooth earbud option like the airpods, the deskphone headsets aren't exactly portable outside of the office.

    Commission Chargebacks?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2019 10:12 PM PDT

Coming up on one year at a SaaS company doing B2B sales. Been hitting quota every time since I got off of ramp, and had some stellar months as well, but now as I'm nearing my 1 year anniversary, they have been emailing me about looming chargebacks coming my way.

Basically if I sign a customer up for a 1-3 year commitment. If they cancel or stop paying in their first year, I get a reversal on my commission for the prorated amount. For example if they only made 2 payments, I get a reversal of commission on the remaining 10 months at the commission payout (percentage) that I originally got paid.

So for example if I signed a 2k deal on a month that I hit a 50% commission payout. I got paid 1k in commission. Now that they have stopped paying, I'll owe 10/12's of that commission back, since they only paid two out of 12 months.

My question is, is this normal? Chargebacks happen occasionally, but 1-5k In chargebacks in a month seems ridiculous, which a few of the reps have been getting lately

Career Path From System Administrator to Pre-Sales SAAS

    Posted: 02 Jul 2019 07:54 PM PDT

Eventually I'd like to become a sales or solutions engineer at one of the major cloud companies. I'm on the verge of leaving my current role as Systems Administrator at a non-profit. This is far and away from the technical and sales industries so I have little in the way of experience or connections there. (The connections I have haven't helped). The jobs I am currently applying for are Applications support or systems analyst type roles in larger institutions and companies in the hopes of getting my foot in the door at least to be on the technical side of assisting the vendors. One vendor I assisted today, did say I have the skills to do pre-sales and he could see me in the role.

The question is, how do I move on from my next job which will not be sales but a support/analyst role? As someone who has only worked for small businesses in my community before moving into the non-profit space, I really have no insight into how to leverage my passion, which I hear is a unicorn in the industry. Yes, I am one of those people with great soft skills and pretty knowledgeable on the technical side.

The companies I am looking at working for and getting in the door of don't really seem to be too sales heavy so there would be limited opportunity to do a lateral transition there. I'm ready to leave my current employer and I'm willing to accept anyone's offer within reason since I've been looking for awhile, but what should I do once I do make the move to another employer? Should I build relationships with the vendors more at the new place? Should I gain experience there and only stay for 1-2 years before looking into pre-sales? How can my systems admin resume which has no real sales numbers and I have no exp in sales be seen as more competitive? Any advice is appreciated.
