    [18] Starting a "business"

    Posted: 07 Jul 2019 07:05 PM PDT

Hello, I'm 18 and I'm trying to start a security camera installation business. I have determined that I can create a high end security camera for 180$ which includes 4 security cameras. I'm doing this for an extra source of income and I also find it very entertaining. I plan to charge Min. 250 - Max 300$ per house hold. It should take me about 2-3 hours per house hold to install.

    Right now, I have 10 units ready to be installed in homes. 10 * 180$ = 1,800$ for a return of 2,500$ - 3,000$ (700$ -1,200$.)
I estimate I can do 1-2 unit per week, so it'll take me about 5-10 weeks.

That being said, should I continue doing this? or is the returns not great enough? Is there any other place I can invest my money to see a greater return in equal to less amount of time?

I also have a part time job as an IT Help Desk, I plan to get a full time Support Specialist Job by March. I am already maxing out my Roth IRA in a medium risk Mutual fund (6,000$), and investing into a separate mutual fund which I plan to take out in about 8-10 years.

    Coffee Shop Business Questions

    Posted: 07 Jul 2019 03:52 PM PDT

Background: I'm 19 and in college majoring in computer science. Planning on getting my bachelors but ultimately want to start my own business.
I'm considering starting a coffee shop even though I know it's quite the saturated market. I had a couple of questions though. 1) Is there a specific location that is more favorable than others? Ideally colder places would be but, every cold place I could think of already has several other coffee shops in the immediate or surrounding areas. 2) How much money should I be expecting to spend in general? and 3) Would it be better to start the business now, while I'm in school, or wait until I'm out of school to start it? I also have some other ideas of generating revenue within the shop and bringing uniqueness to it as well if those affect decisions at all. Any advice is greatly appreciated thank you!

For those who offer wholesale, what information do you collect from potential account applicants?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2019 05:56 PM PDT

We are starting to receive wholesale inquiries for our product and I'd like to create an application form for potential applicants.

Which kind of tax information do you ask for from applicants? Do you require a tax ID as a minimum, or ask for any other supporting documentation such as a resale license or sellers permit? I'm in the USA (Missouri).

I've been trying to research this, and it looks like laws vary by state, but often you are required to have a resale license on file for each of your retail customers? Possibly a sales tax exemption certificate?

We've applied for many different wholesale accounts over the years with other vendors and only maybe 1 in 10 has ever asked us for any legal documentation, but we're in a cottage industry and I have a feeling some haven't asked us for the documentation they probably needed.

I'd like to ask for this information as part of the application because we're getting a lot of probably non-serious inquiries (people who want to resell on Etsy or something, or are "still getting their website up" types of deals). But I don't want to create a barrier for valid retailers.

[Advice] Fired employee asks for future reconsideration

    Posted: 08 Jul 2019 01:23 AM PDT

We are in Washington State. I fired an employee last week whose job performance took a noticeable dive in the last month.
They messaged me over the weekend and fully admitted to being addicted to drugs. Then I received this request... "Because we are friends on Facebook, you will see me get help for my issue and you can follow my progress. Would you consider letting me come back once I'm out of the woods?" I told them I wouldn't discount that idea. I offered to keep them on the company insurance past the end of the month if they provide me with documentation that they are enrolled and attending treatment on an ongoing basis. They are a good person with a good heart and it hurt to let them go to start with.
So, give it to me straight... Am I crazy?

Wife and I own a small pizza shop, is it okay if we just quit paying ourselves and used the Companies debit card to live our lives?

    Posted: 08 Jul 2019 01:09 AM PDT

Are there legal ramifications to this come tax session filing no income on ourselves? Are there serious cons we are not foreseeing that can arise? Any and all feed back from facts and opinions would be greatly appreciated, as we're just a couple of young adults who got lucky as hell and now own a business that can keep itself afloat, I just fear this idea might be illegal in some way, and we don't want to fuck up a good thing.

EDIT: It seemed this is a horrible idea. Thank you all for the feedback!

We are planning to have a restaurant business for our feasibility study. We will serve single and buffet type. We will have a defense and we can see that the panelist will ask that question.

I thought that this subreddit will help us answer that question. Thank you for your help.

Business is going well and workers have extra time during their shifts - side projects within a business? Does anyone do this?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2019 12:05 PM PDT

Last year we started a website agency type business and it's going very well so far. We have two developers that we can more than afford to keep on nearly full-time with just recurring revenue.

We want to stay small and don't want to get a lot more clients, but we have these awesome developers and we all work so well together. At first I thought we would need to cut down their hours because i don't want to have nothing for them to do...but then I realized that I have had a few dream projects (or websites) in the back of my mind for quite some time, and now I have people that can do it for me. It's perfect and we are all excited to get at them.

A sign that makes me feel I'm on the right track here is the 20% side project "benefit" that google has for it's employees.

But i imagine it's like this for some others as well? What projects or, side-projects, have you had your employees/freelancers work on while client work is slow, and to what benefit?

Can I run a business out of a storage unit?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2019 04:25 PM PDT

Long story short, my eBay/Amazon business is growing and I'm looking to get into more wholesale lots, but for that I need more space. Is it illegal to run a business out of a storage unit? That is, can I pick and pack stuff there, or do I have to pick it and take it to my apartment to pack? Thanks!

I'm the founder, should i sell the product myself, or hire a salesman?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2019 09:19 AM PDT

    So a bit of context:

I'm a social person. Im a likeable person. Its part of the reason I got to where i am today. I run a small marketing agency and I am a decent salesman.

But, i understand that sales is an art, one im definitely no professional out. In the end of the day, I'm a marketer who learned how to sell himself, on his own.

Should i continue to sell my service to my leads on my own, or should i get a salesman?

The crux of this is I understand the service better than anybody, so i can answer any technical question with 100% confidence, but I'm sure i could hire a salesman thats better than me, however he wouldnt have the same knowledge.

Did I mess up? Solo S-Corp and signed up for 401K

    Posted: 07 Jul 2019 08:39 PM PDT

I'm self employed as a solo-employee S. corp. and the business started to get quite profitable this year so i wanted to minimize my tax liability.

Since I previously worked full-time at a company and had a 401k, I thought it'd be a good idea to set-up the same kind of 401k with my own business using an online platform that syncs with Gusto (which I use to pay myself payroll).

I just read about SEP IRAs and was shocked at how much easier it is for self-employed businesses and feel like I shot myself in the foot setting up this extremely complicated 401k which wasn't even really meant for a 1 man business.

I've only made 1 contribution - is it possible to immediately cancel the 401k and start up a SEP IRA?

I want to start selling clothes with customised prints - how would I go about finding a printer and sewer with no MOQ?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2019 08:35 PM PDT

I want to introduce products in my clothing line that are kind of similar to something like www.myphotosocks.com. It will be very different but that's the only example I can think of to explain what I'm looking for.

I want to allow my customers to customise the pattern on the material before it's put together as a piece of clothing (shirt, socks, etc).

I'm worried that because I want the orders to be done in small batches it will be costly and difficult to manage. But if companies like My Photo Socks can do it, surely it's possible?

High school starting student operated businesses questions/help. [CA]

    Posted: 07 Jul 2019 02:39 PM PDT

I want to use actual business activities as part of a few classes I'm going to teach but I'm getting stuck on how to legally do it.

The main idea is to have students setup advertising as part of a web development class. I would want student to receive any money their site earns to motivate them and avoid the ethical issues of making money off students.

Because they are minors, the school district would have to be the business vehicle for entering agreements with web hosting and advertising partners. I would have the student's parents do this but it's unrealistic to expect that kind of parent involvement.

The main problem then become moving money to the students. As soon as they get paid anything it looks like minimum wage laws kick in. I have looked at classifying them as interns or trainees but that doesn't seem to comply with the laws.

In other states student run businesses have used profit share or consignment model (for selling art) but I don't know if that's compatable with CA laws.

Any help or advice is appreciated.

    Need some advice

    Posted: 07 Jul 2019 05:56 PM PDT

I'm new to the business world and need advice on how to expand my business and let people know that I'm here. Any ways to share my business? People have been talking about making an Etsy shop, but how do I make it so people want to search me up? Right now, I'm stumped on this one subject, how to make my voice heard. I don't want to self promo on reddit or other platforms, but how could I possibly share my products with other people?

    Mid-year health insurance change

    Posted: 07 Jul 2019 05:11 PM PDT

My sister in law works for a small private school. Maybe 100 employees total. They are making a change in their health insurance now for some reason. Her and my brother have already met their deductible for this year, and they are concerned that with the new coverage they will have to pay a new deductible. This was just announced, and no details were given.

Can they do this? My brother and his wife can not afford to pay another 10k this year when they shouldn't be paying anything out of pocket. My brother is in remission from cancer, but he still requires regular chemo treatments which are quite expensive. Again, I think it would be cruel and unusual to reset the deductibles halfway through the year. Just wondering if anyone knows how this might play out.

Insurance/ permits on a construction business.

    Posted: 07 Jul 2019 03:21 PM PDT

Hello all, I'm going to be starting a little side business along with a more experienced friend of mine. We'll only be doing jobs on the weekend and at the moment we're not planning on taking on large commercial jobs as it's just the two of us. We both have full time jobs outside of this, are there any sort of permits or insurance we need or would that even be a necessity at the moment as we're just testing the waters?

[Canada] how to pay for goods internationally through CIBC

    Posted: 07 Jul 2019 03:14 PM PDT

I have a small business account with CIBC. I need to send proof of purchase with payment to my suppliers bank which resides in Pakistan. The bank will then allow them(provide the necessary documents to ship) to ship out my goods (clothing).

I cannot do a global money transfer.

They've explained that I need to fill out a form and send the money in person at the bank. But I don't know what they're talking about. What could this form be?
