Paying $210 a month for car insurance on a $1,000 car. Posted: 29 Jul 2019 04:41 PM PDT I've shopped around looking at every possible car insurance company I can, and decided to stay with progressive when I bought this current car. Last car was totaled two years ago, it wasn't my fault and is on record as such. It was about a $2,000 car and they gave me significantly less for it, so now I have a $1,000 car. It at least runs well after allllll the work I've done to it (probably $2,000 at this point). I'm 27 years old and in Michigan, and the idea of insurance dropping as you get older always sounded amazing, but my insurance has never once dropped, not even a dollar. I'm paying $40 more for this beater than I did the previous car, all because someone almost killed me and my rates went up. My credit is also average. It pains me to pay a quarter of the car's price every single month. Is there something I'm doing wrong somehow? I know it's hard for anyone else to see without looking at my insurance documents but this isn't right. It can't be. I'm paying almost a quarter of my monthly paycheck. I'm looking into finding a job I can ride a bike to but there's not much out here. It shouldn't have to be like that though. Any help is greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Help! Home Depot ruined my beautiful tile Posted: 29 Jul 2019 07:20 PM PDT Alt account because of reasons. Long story short, I ordered a very nice refrigerator from Home Depot and the delivery guy severely scratched my kitchen floor in two different spots equaling about 9 damaged tiles. Now these tiles were already there when I bought my house 2 years ago and it's a very upscale black marble with design. Honestly, it's one of the reasons I bought this house. I have no extras anywhere in the house or info of where the marble came from. Their Claims Examiner told me to find quotes for labor and material for new tiles since there's no way of finding this exact stone even if I knew what and where it came from. My quoted price for about 1,000 sq. ft. of kitchen tile, labor and materials included totaled roughly $45,000. When I sent her the quotes, she replied, "Due to the amount of your estimates I will have to send an independent appraiser to your home. I have your address as ****** ***** ******. Please advise if I have your permission to send someone out?" Now what are my options here? Should I allow for her appraiser to come and how "independent" is he? Should I get my own homeowner's insurance involved and deal with subrogation even though I've heard mixed things about this. What should I do? Thank you kindly for your help. [link] [comments] |
Does private insurance ever go after businesses? Posted: 30 Jul 2019 02:30 AM PDT My kid fell and hurt her arm at a privately owned business that caters to kids. Kind of like a daycare. This resulted in an ER visit and a cast. I have no interest in holding them accountable as I do not believe them to be negligent. I have private insurance through my employer which covered the visit. I'm just wondering, would insurance have any reason to go after the business? I would just like to let the business know I'm not planning on filing anything with them because I'm assuming they are probably concerned that's a possibility, but I didn't know if there's any reason for my insurance to go after them without my initiating it. Thanks for your thoughts [link] [comments] |
Geico denies claim because police report hasn't come in 'yet' (MA) Posted: 29 Jul 2019 05:30 PM PDT I was rear-ended about a month ago by a woman driving her boyfriend's work car. He had commerical Geico insurance. The police came took a report and she willingly stated that she was at fault. I reported a claim with Geico (everything had to be through phone as it was commerical). The insurance agent was polite and took my information. Later she called me saying she couldn't reach the policy holder and asked for the police report number to verify my story, which I gave. Last week she called saying she was closing the claim because the police report had not come in "yet". How is this a valid reason to close a claim? I'm assuming there must be some performance numbers she needs to meet with closed claims but somehow closing a case before all the information has been gathered makes little sense to me. I've called her office back and left a message, but if she refuses to anything about it what is my next course of action? Calling the police station myself? This takes place is Massachusetts by the waym [link] [comments] |
Life Insurance and Alcohol Abuse Posted: 29 Jul 2019 09:01 PM PDT Hello, I have always felt that I drink more than I should, I know I do. I've always tried to be honest with my medical professionals about it during things like physicals and therapy sessions and tbh I'm regretting that a bit b/c when I told my new doctor today at my yearly physical she was typing a lot of notes and told me I need to cut back (FAIR). I got anxious about the typing and she said that talking about things like this could affect life insurance in my future. I have also had one ER visit due to alcohol intoxication 4 years ago now. I'm not looking to get life insurance tomorrow but I would like to in the next 5 years when I have kids. What can I do now to help myself not be denied later due to my hospital stay and medical honesty over the years? Or is there nothing I really can do? Thanks [link] [comments] |
Paid off my car with lien-holder - can I safely remove the car from my car insurance? Posted: 29 Jul 2019 11:58 PM PDT I paid off my car in full with my lien holder earlier this month. I have not received the title in the mail, however, they do show it was paid off in full. This car is a major POS and therefore I do not drive it. It sits in my carport and that's it. I'm wanting to sell/donate the vehicle but I don't want to pay an extra $100/month for a vehicle that legitimately is not being driven. Is it okay if I go ahead and take the car off of my car insurance? Edit: Washington State [link] [comments] |
How do I shop around for term life insurance and get actual, real quotes? Posted: 29 Jul 2019 11:57 PM PDT I have an insurance agent who has written insurance policies for my home and car. I asked him to get me some rates for life insurance. He gave me a few quotes and I picked the least expensive one. I had a medical exam last week and am now waiting for the next step to see if my rate will be higher than what was quoted due to any health conditions. I frequently get ads on Facebook for life insurance quotes. But I feel like those are all just lead generation ads where if I fill out a form, I'm going to get a ton of calls from other insurance agents. I don't really feel like doing that. Then I filled out a form at nerd wallet for insurance quotes and they gave me some quotes, too, (without my having to talk to anyone) but again these are quotes before my physical exam. These rates were about the same as what my agent quoted me (thankfully) but who knows if they will be dramatically different if I were to get physical exams from the different companies. So how does one actually go about shopping for the best rate on life insurance? It's such an expensive service and you can't change it once you've started, so I'd like to know how I can get the best deal. Thank you for your help! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Jul 2019 11:28 PM PDT I don't do a ton of vaping or smoking so I don't have "nicotine use" listed on my health insurance through work. However I was at a wedding yesterday and enjoyed a cigar with the groomsmen. Tomorrow I take a blood test for a weightloss appointment at my doctors office. My question is can my doctor alert my provider of detected nicotine in my blood? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Jul 2019 10:39 PM PDT Is it normal for insurance to cost $142 a month just for liability? I know some coworkers who get full coverage for less than that. [link] [comments] |
Was rear ended need some advice\help Posted: 29 Jul 2019 09:52 PM PDT X-posted from legal advice. Got rear ended at a dead stop by someone going 45mph+ . I was not at fault and the driver was cited for following too closely. He specifically said he "looked away for a second" (he was on his phone). I was, until recently, a full time student and was driving what I would consider a VERY good condition 1997 Jimmy. The insurance company is telling me a few things -
Basically this - I hurt and I was not at fault AT ALL, according to the police that responded to the accident. My car (that I just spent about 1k fixing) is a total loss and suspect they're going to lowball me on the actual value of. What can I do to make sure that I don't get screwed over by this large insurance provider? I get the impression that they preferred to dictate the terms to me instead of coming to an agreement. Do I have any say in who appraises my car? Is there anything I can do to maximize my payout so I'll actually be able to afford a reliable car like the one I owned? Any help is very much appreciated. Thank you. I live in the United States in Nebraska if that helps. - I will be contacting my own agent tomorrow -spoke with a lawyer that didn't want to take the case -previous post replies say that 750 for pain and suffering is a laughably low amount. Is this a good rate? What will comprehensive add? Posted: 29 Jul 2019 09:45 PM PDT Background: I'm 19, on parents insurance. I pay my premium but they somehow get a lower rate with me on there. I have discounts for good grades and taking a defensive driving course. I've had my license since 16. No tickets, just a verbal warning from a state park police officer. 1 accident in which I was not at fault. I had my dashcams rolling which showed the pickup driver hitting my rear bumper and was evidence in court to convict him of several offenses (failure to control speed, no headlights in rain). Clean-ish record for being one of those "dangerous young men." My former vehicle was a 2011 Ford Escape V6. With full comprehensive and roadside assistance (worthless - 4 hour response time) I was paying about $170 a month until I turned 18 and then it has been about $135. I sold it and now drive a 1996 Ford Bronco with a 4" lift. It's street value is about $4000 and I put another 6 into souping it up. I am afraid of the liability if I hit someone due to the truck being made of solid steel and having raised, reinforced bumpers. Max liability only is running me about $105 a month. On the other hand, I don't really care about collision coverage. With the "crumple zones" on most cars in my area, I'm sure I'll be writing a check to them instead. What I'm really concerned about is the comprehensive Our fire department is shit. So I carry a high powered fire extinguisher that I've tested on some fires the junkyard let me light. They're refillable, that's why. It's kinda easy to steal, so I am gonna install some immobilizers and a GPS with hidden battery so I can go all vigilante if it's stolen. Or cops are shit too. Vandalism isn't a big concern but paint is $3000 and tires are $1000. I want SOME protection against injustice and acts of god. So my question is, is it possible in TX with GEICO to get comprehensive without collision insurance? Either way, on average , how much percentage wise would collision or comprehensive be for an old truck? I know they probably can't insure the entire value, I'd just like something if shit goes south. If it gets wrecked I can always put most of the undamaged parts on a new $4000 Bronco. [link] [comments] |
Just moved states and haven't switched auto insurance yet Posted: 29 Jul 2019 03:29 PM PDT So we moved to CO a while ago. It was a spur of the moment move and in all of the craziness we still havent switched our auto insurance from FL to CO yet. I went to take the trash out this morning and noticed someone clipped my GFs truck and it has a high scratch on the bumper. Am I screwed? Should I be honest with them? Or just switch my policy now and report it in a couple days? I dont want to get screwed because I feel like it's my fault I didn't switch the coverage and I'm gonna be in a world of shit if we have to foot the bill for this. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Jul 2019 09:08 PM PDT Hello, i wandered on this subreddit hoping to get some help on a situation i'm currently in. So about a week ago I was hit by a driver exiting a parking lot and coming right into my lane, I slammed on my breaks but ended up t-boning them. Both me and the other driver have the same insurance provider, (state farm) and the accident was deemed %100 fault of the other driver. After hearing this news, i was given two options, either choose from one of the specified body shops that state farm works with to get my car fixed, or I could specify a body shop of my choice. I told them the name and information of the body shop that I want to go to (which wasn't on the list) and they tell me that within a few days they would send a representative out to the shop to give an estimation of the repair cost. FYI my car is a 2006 Volkswagen GTI. It's an older car, but it was in very good condition before the accident and was very well maintained mechanically. I also have put it a good amount of money in upgrades since i've owned the car, mainly aesthetic (upgraded rims, downpipe, a BT stereo system, lowering springs, tinted windows) A few days go by, and I get a call from the body shop telling me a few things: First he tells me that the representative had come up with an estimate of 6500 (which i can only assume was calculated with an eye test). Right off the bat i'm shocked, as it was a low speed collision and it seemed that most/all the damage would be cosmetic, the car was still driveable after the accident. The next thing he tells me is that since he disagreed with the insurance company's estimate, he did his own evaluation, taking off the bumper to be able to get a good look and gave his personal estimate of 3500 in repairs. But at this point the insurance company is pushing for the car to be totaled. He said if i want my car fixed he could push his estimate to them to try and get it fixed, or I can settle and total the car out. Shortly after this call, I got an email from state farm giving me the total compensation payable to me if the car was totaled. The offer was roughly 4900 + taxes and registration cost coming to a total of around 5500. This price is close to what i paid for the car originally, but it doesn't take into consideration all the $ that i've put into this thing. So to sum up, I've found myself in a situation where I am not at fault for the damage, but I'm still at risk of losing all the extra money that i've put into the car in upgrades and regular maintenance if the car is totaled. If i decide to go the route of trying to get the car fixed instead, then i'm worried about the chance of the damage exceeding the body shops $3500 estimate and the insurance company refusing to pay the difference. I'm really inexperienced in this kind of stuff, It's my first accident and I fear that I will be losing money no matter how this resolves. If the car is totaled, the amount state farm will give me is only enough to purchase a base car of the same model+year but without any of my upgrades. And now here I am, hoping that people more experienced than me can help me understand my options a little more, as im skeptical to go directly to the insurance company with these questions. I guess my main questions would be: Q: If I total the car out, am i simply out of luck when it comes to all the extra money in upgrades that I put into the car? I've read a whole bunch on this stuff and have seen a sources have said that you are supposed to notify your insurance company about upgrades and failing to do so can even void your coverage, is it the same case here even if i'm not at fault for the accident? Do insurance companies care about making this kind of stuff right, or am i just lucky to be getting back close to what I paid for it? Q: If i decided I don't want the car totaled, and the insurance company agrees to go ahead with the body shop's $3500 estimate to fix the car, is there a chance that the insurance company will refuse to pay any excess fees for damage that may be discovered later on? If the $3500 turns out to be less than what is needed to fix ALL the damage, will i have to pay out of pocket for the remainder? Thank you all for reading, I know it's long but i've been having trouble finding examples for my specific situation. Feel free to give any input you feel may be helpful! [link] [comments] |
I had an infusion done while I thought I was had insurance but I got hit with the bill Posted: 29 Jul 2019 06:22 AM PDT I thought I was covered and I had been for every infusion up until this last one but after almost 2 month past my parents give me some mail and a bill for $26,691.00 from my doctor is in it. They didn't bother to look at the mail and I don't live at their house anymore so the bill is overdue by a week but I didn't get it until yesterday. Either way I can't pay this at all and I would have never done it if I knew I wasn't covered. So I have no idea what to do or what steps I need to take so if you guys have any suggestions on what to do to help with this situation that would be great. [link] [comments] |
Backed in to a car, would it be worth paying over deductible for it to not post on my record? Posted: 29 Jul 2019 01:21 PM PDT I backed in to a car a week back, and am currently settling with the victim. We had initially thought that the repairs may have been under my deductible (500), but as per usual, it was about twice that. The victim claimed an initial quote of 1000, which I replied saying I would have to go through insurance for, which she then dropped the repair costs down to 800. This makes me think that she may be just trying to cash out and not repair it as the car was kind of a POS anyways. Would it be best for me to just have them go through insurance to avoid fowl play if it's only a couple hundred over my deductible? [link] [comments] |

Getting Progressive to correct a claim made in error? Posted: 29 Jul 2019 04:55 PM PDT Last month I got a crack in my window so I went to get a couple of estimates for getting it fixed. One of the places I got an estimate from was Safelite. I did not identify myself as an insurance customer because my deductible is higher than the price of a windshield. Recently I spoke to my insurance about renewal and one of the items identified as potentially effecting my rates was a glass claim entered by Safelite. I told them that I never opened that claim. They told me Safelite did. It is also visible on my CLUE report, so other insurers can see it. I asked progressive to remove it, as I didn't intend on using my insurance. I got multiple different answers from them, but at this point they are refusing to remove the claim. They pointed me at Safelite who also said they can't remove the claim and pointed me back to progressive. I never filed this claim, and I am not going to file a claim for this issue. I perturbs me that a claim was opened without my permission and now its on my record. Is there any way for me to get (either of) them to remove it? TO CLARIFY: They made the claim in error, not me. So the question isn't about correcting something I did by mistake, rather progressive doing so. [link] [comments] |
Is the lending institution automatically also the loss payee/other insured? Posted: 29 Jul 2019 08:13 PM PDT I have StateFarm auto insurance and leased a car about a month ago. I was reviewing my lease contract the other day and saw that Nissan needs to be listed as "loss payer" and "other insured" on my insurance. I looked on my StateFarm website but can only see Nissan listed as the "Lending Institution that finances your vehicle" there is a full address and fax number listed there for them as well. If Nissan is listed as the lending institution are they automatically also recognized to be a loss payer/other insured? Just by common sense I am assuming that StateFarm would pay the lending institution (ie loss payee) if there is one listed but I am not positive... I just want to make sure that I don't need to call to have Nissan added separately to any other parts of my policy. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |

Water damage covered in renters insurance? Posted: 29 Jul 2019 03:05 PM PDT Hey guys, I've recently had an issue in my apartment where the kitchen sink was left on (with a stopper in) and flooded some of my kitchen. Our property manager called in ServPro to do some water mitigation and left equipment running for about 2 week, then came back with a $3,800 estimate. I have renters insurance through state farm, as was required for moving in. In this case who is held liable for paying for the damages? My claim adjuster at State Farm says that i'm not covered for water damage, and my maintenance supervisor says they doing have building insurance(?). At this point I'm freaking out and don't know what to do.... Any guidance would help! Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Need advice: insurance for car rental Posted: 29 Jul 2019 02:55 PM PDT I got rear-ended recently (progressive admits fault for its insured). They arrange a rental car through Enterprise while my car is being repaired. All paid for by progressive. The rents car lady asked if I wanted to buy their insurance or use my own. I'm ignorant on how this stuff works. Do I need the rental car insurance, and if so, should progressive be paying for it? It doesn't seem like I should be on the hook for any rental-related expenses, since the wreck wasn't my fault. [link] [comments] |
Frustrating experience with Hagerty, looking for recommendations for classic car insurance. Posted: 29 Jul 2019 05:59 PM PDT I'm looking for some recommendations regarding classic car insurance. Background, I'm 20 y/o and just purchased a '65 Mustang in WA state. I am a student still living at home and am still on my family's household auto insurance policy. I talked with Hagerty this morning and was given a quote and applied for a policy to insure the Mustang. I did the voice signature and gave them my credit card info for payment and was told I would be called back when my application had been processed. I got a call back and they requested proof of insurance for my daily driver, that is insured by USAA, in the form of a declarations page (not just the proof of insurance card). I sent it and was told that I need to be the "Named Insured" on my policy, not just an operator of vehicles. My mom is the named insured, and everyone else is in the family, including my dad, are operators equally covered on the policy. They told me that in order to be approved I need to be the named insured on my own policy, meaning leave the household policy that I am currently on and buy myself an individual policy. I got a quote from USAA for this and it doubled my current premium because I lose all the joint plan discounts, but it changes nothing about what I am covered for, simply the wording on the policy. Is there any way around this? Is it a common problem? When I explained it to USAA the representative thought it was ridiculous and tried to argue with Hagerty themselves but had no success. How do I insure this car without leaving my current policy for my daily driver? It seems like all the other classic car insurers have age restrictions that I don't meet. [link] [comments] |
