My family's bar hosts DJs whose audiences traditionally file numerous chargebacks the following days after a gig. What can we do to combat unlawful chargebacks/is it worth it?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2019 12:50 PM PDT

Firstly, we do not have a chip reader as the bar is large and the time it takes to make one process with the chip reader is longer than if we were to run three separate transactions. This is the only way that our banks have concluded we could combat this but is time ineffective.

Second, the average transaction is for 3-4 drinks, or 50 bucks so it wouldn't normally be a huge deal but when 30 people file chargebacks the day after, there is time and money being wasted after the fact.

Is there a quick and effective way to combat unfair chargebacks like this?

Would it be enough to keep track of individual's names from their ID pre-entry to establish that they were in our establishment at the time of purchase?

Social media / digital marketing workshops for small busineses?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2019 03:54 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I'm in the process of helping small businesses around me with just enough social media experience so they don't have to spend a lot on outsourcing. My idea is that some small businesses really have great potential, however, their online presence falls short. So I've got two questions here:

    1) If you're a small business owner, would you find a need of upskilling yourself in social media / digital marketing (say once a week for 4 weeks)? The aim would be short, intimate classes that don't cost a lot.

    2) Has anyone on here tried doing this with any success? I currently run my own digital marketing business, but thought this method would be easier/cheaper for small businesses.

    Thanks in advance!

Advice on opening a yoga studio.

    Posted: 30 Jul 2019 03:37 AM PDT

My wife and I are considering opening a yoga(hot?)/wellness studio. We are thinking about adding additional services like healthy snacks, pilates..ect.

Our town is small but will be growing quite a bit in the next few years. The town has a busy bike trail and is an active community.

Looking for advice or suggestions. Is it a profitable venture, additional services ideas, best way to get started, lease buy..ect? Should we focus on Hot yoga?

    Thanks!

    Baby clothes restoration service

    Posted: 30 Jul 2019 02:18 AM PDT

I'm thinking of starting a baby clothes restoration service where people can bring in/ donate their old baby clothes and we restore them for a price or sell them online for those who don't mind secondhand restored clothes.

They would look brand new and we'd create gift boxes for those who want to get their friend/family a gift but can't afford to spend a lot.

So many baby clothes get thrown away so I was thinking if they were cleaned up, ironed and brought back to life it would save money and help the environment.

Is this something worth looking into and what would be the first steps to get something like this started?

All help / feedback is appreciated

I kinda messed up. Jumped the gun and made an LLC, but I can't use it for my whole business. Help and advice appreciated.

    Posted: 29 Jul 2019 09:49 AM PDT

So, I found out a few days ago that LLC's can't be used for professional services. I'm a licensed cosmetologist, so the service part of my business is not covered by my LLC. Do I need to also get a sole-proprietorship license in addition to my LLC business license? Can my LLC 'own' my sole-proprietorship, so I can take my payments through my same system and use the same bank accounts?

*I have separate insurance specifically for cosmetology business.

I’ve hit a plateau gaining new clients for my social media management/consulting business

    Posted: 30 Jul 2019 01:51 AM PDT

So some background: I got my first internship at a PR agency when I was 17 and a senior in high school. I found my niche in social media marketing and went on to major in marketing in college with a minor in business management, and worked for three years at a boutique marketing agency in a major city.

I left that company because after going to many networking events, I began to get offers from clients outside of my job and decided to start my own business.

I've been going strong for a little over a year, and have brought on one employee to help with some of the workload. I'm able to comfortably save quite a big chunk of money per month ($6000), along with saving around $1000 for "fun" and using about $3000 for rent, and other bills such as insurance and my car payment.

I have an extensive portfolio and have worked with some very large companies and brands. My prices are competitive. The market for my business in the city I'm in is HUGE.

So I cannot understand why I'm suddenly unable to find new clients? I've gone from getting between 7-8 new clients per month, to maybe 1 or 2 - IF that.

My website is strong, my company social media presence is strong, I have very very good reviews, and I've continued to network.

    Any suggestions?

Help me check my boxes (and find more)

    Posted: 30 Jul 2019 04:32 AM PDT

I'm still in the concept phase as I'm still e listed but further employment with the military is not certain. Here are my ducks as it stands right now: I have my idea refined and why I feel success would be likely (services offered that differ from similar services in the are) the populations of the area (should probably try to find demographics) big employers in the area that draw people from outside the normal distance a person would travel to use my service. Estimated cost of all equipment to be purchased, rough estimation of the size and type of building to be constructed (no price quote yet though). Prospective subscriber/monthly cost matrix, and attempting to make contact with my banks SBA loan guy, but my current job is pretty busy with no cell phone access. Without getting I to what service I'm providing, what generic things have I missed

In real dollars and cents not per click, how much are small at home businesses spending on Facebook advertising?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2019 03:55 PM PDT

In real dollar amounts, how much do you spend on Facebook and Instagram advertising? How big is your business, number of clients per week or month? I'm talking about new small businesses that are operated from the home. I'm trying to figure out a start up budget and per click pricing is rather vague. I know we all have different clientele, amount of business etc. I'm just looking for some examples of monthly expenditures.

What tools are you using to manage your vendors?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2019 11:48 PM PDT

We run a small software company and are approached by all kinds of vendors on a daily basis - marketing, IT support, and many others. I used to maintain an Excel with their details but this is clearly not scalable. Sometimes they share brochures, and proposals which I'd like to keep together. I'd also like to organize them by category so it's easier to pick from them. I've crossed 50 vendors a while ago and this has become hairy.

    Any suggestions?

Old School to New School, how to reduce dependency on a direct sales force?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2019 11:39 AM PDT

We are a packaging company that is highly dependent on a direct sales force making cold calls. We are looking to increase inbound calls and drive traffic to our website so we can better focus our sales force on customers further down the purchase path. We like working directly with our customers and would like to avoid a completely online model that many in the custom packaging space are using.

Have you had any success converting from a direct sales force? Would love to here the tactics and technology that have been useful or those that have been a waste of time.

    Question to small biz owners

    Posted: 29 Jul 2019 11:45 PM PDT

I m thinking of making app or web where small biz owners can post coupons to local people for fixed $50 to $120 per month.

I m planning to provide analytics for type of customer using coupons. What type of customer comes back. Who are your regular customers etc, etc.

What do you guys think? This idea is more about marketing your biz as well.

Taxes and filing for a sole proprietorship?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2019 11:14 PM PDT

Hi there! I started a small eCommerce business recently on shopify and it has been going very well. I heard from someone that taxes on people that are self employee are usually very high. Does anyone have any insight on taxes and businesses? I am very new to this and want to make sure i'm not paying anymore money in taxes than I need to. Thank you!

Whats the point of a business checking account? Does anyone have 2 personal checking accounts? (one used for business)

    Posted: 29 Jul 2019 09:50 PM PDT

Why not just open up another personal checking account that has no minimums with interest?

I currently have a business checking account, but I hate the fact that there's a minimum. Also, it doesn't even have any interest on it. So what is the benefit of having an actual "business" checking account?

Can't I just have two separate personal checking accounts?

Also, I currently don't have a "true" business, I just get additional money from side businesses like affiliate stuff and/or selling clothes here and there. So I won't even be making thousands/month or anything like that.

Social Media Benefits-E commerce website (MoreCustomersApp)

What type of bank (size) do you use and why?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2019 08:15 PM PDT

National, Regional, Local/CU? Is there a particular reason you choose them?

I run a local business. Many of our (small) business partners tend to almost always use local banks within their own towns, however our two local town banks generally offer accounts with no maintenance fees but they don't have quickbooks Online support and also charge $5-25 per month for mobile deposit.

Looking for advice to build up a portfolio

    Posted: 29 Jul 2019 06:34 PM PDT

Several years ago I bought a full size CNC router to expand my business into dimensional signs and lettering. My goal was to do New England style carved signs and cut lettering. Ultimately for various reasons, it never took off, mostly my fault. The jobs I was often approached with were jobs that were either really small or just wacky, which resulted in general frustration with going that avenue.

I'd like to give it one more shot. What I'd like to do is find 3-5 businesses where I can make them high quality "at cost" signs for my portfolio in an effort to push the business in the direction I want.

My problem is, I have no idea how to publicize I'd like to do this. The big thing is, I only want to take on jobs that will be great for my portfolio/website so that it will build business in the direction I'd like to go. That way it will hopefully allow me to get customers doing the work I'm interested in doing, more or less. Obviously as a business person, I would be more willing to take on "bad" jobs that were for pay. But if I'm doing it at cost, I want to make sure I'm doing projects that will benefit me as well.

Any hints/advice/thoughts on how to accomplish this?

What do you use to organize leads?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2019 06:26 PM PDT

Say I have a list of leads that I write down in Google docs. They are events and therefore they have dates. I like to write down the last thing I did such as - "Tues July 17 called Eric. Thurs July 19 emailed Mona, asked if they already have a vendor…"

I'd like [the software] to be able to sort the list based on date or maybe I can click and it'll sort alphabetically based on the name of the event, or sort any other way I want by clicking on the header.

Sounds like a spreadsheet but I hate freaking spreadsheets and from my experience, you can't really sort that easily and if you do you might f things up and get data mixed up. Too fragile.

Guess I'm looking for some kind of app or online database or something that takes "entries" and you can have all kinds of info in that entry like contact name, phone number, event date, or any category I want to create. It can then sort by one of those categories.

Anything out there like that? I feel like it's going to be comically obvious answer. thx

Hi! Everything is going well with my business, but I'd like an outside opinion for someone with more knowledge/experience to perhaps have a look at everything I'm doing such as

    - Shipping costs

    - Product pricing

And so on. Would this be a 'business advisor?' Are they very expensive?
