Medicare Allowed Amounts vs Billed. Outrageous Difference

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 08:35 PM PDT

I just looked a Medicare EOB for a surgical procedure. Office Billed 110,000, Medicare Allowed $5,500. WTF. So someone without insurance has to pay 110,000 while Medicare pays a more reasonable $5,500.

    First car insurance suggestions?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2019 02:56 AM PDT

So long story short, I had to get a new car on my own and now have to get insurance on my own as well. I'm 19 years old and have had my license for almost 2 years. Haven't got any tickets or anything. I reside in CA and just wanted to know my cheapest options.

How do I follow up? Denied claim due to prior damage, no damage on vehicle in that area in 3 months ownership ive had it. Where did they come up with this?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 02:16 PM PDT

As title explains, i was denied my claim because they said prior damage. They have never physically inspected my car before adding it to the insurance. The body was pretty good condition, clearcoat is faded from sun damage.

I HAVE video of the accident, vehicle straight hit me on purpose.

I sent them videos and images.

    still denied.. is this commmon?

    I got police report

    I got footage of accident

I got pictures of plates of the guys.

My car insurance is telling me what “I obviously hit a pole” instead of what actually happened and something in the road came up and hit my car.

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 07:05 AM PDT

Progressive just called me and told me that the body shop told us that it looks like you hit a pole, so we're going to have to change your claim at an at fault. The other day the car in front of me kicked up something and i tried to swerve to miss it and it got my car. What do I do? I have zero witnesses corolla

Edit: the supervisor called me back and is definitely siding with them saying I hit someone. WTF

Spent a long time in Japan and got married there. Came back to CA for work while my wife continued the application for permanent residence from Japan. She got it and is coming to join me in CA tomorrow. How do I get her insured?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2019 12:16 AM PDT

    Hello everyone.

I'm a US citizen working in CA. I have health insurance through my employer. I was married the entire time, but couldn't add my wife because she was going through the visa process and had no connection to the USA when I accepted my job and enrolled in my insurance.

Well, the long, grueling process for applying for her permanent residence is over, and she is finally able to join me in CA tomorrow! Problem is, we were expecting she could enroll in travel insurance. Turns out she can't, because she as she has no return date planned, she can't be treated as a traveler.

How can I get her health insurance? What can I even Google?

My employer told me a few weeks back when I inquired about this that her moving into the country does not qualify as a life change event, so I wouldn't be able to add her until the next enrollment period. Friends mentioned "Cobra", but I Googled and can't even get a quote unless I add EVERYONE in the household to the plan.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Deductible denial leading to $1k medicine cost, what do I do?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 08:09 PM PDT

I have BCBS that denying valid claims to put medical costs towards my deductible, resulting in a medication cost of almost 1,000. How do I fight this? I have paid over 4k in medical costs but am somehow at barely 2k deductible? How does that happen, what is my recourse?

A warning regarding GEICO's online auto quote tool

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 02:07 PM PDT

TL;DR: GEICO adjusted my rates based on a fictitious accident that I temporarily added when getting a quote (out of curiosity on how it would affect my rate).

I've been shopping for auto insurance and was playing around with GEICO's online quote tool to find a good policy. I was curious to see how an accident would affect my rate, so I added an accident to my history and played around with rates some more. Then I deleted the accident and settled on policy details that I liked.

I decided to purchase GEICO insurance, and received an email today that my policy had been adjusted and my 6 month rate effectively doubled. Apparently the hypothetical accident that I reported in the online quote tool was added by the insurance underwriter. He even added an imaginary number of $8000 of personal injury damages (I did not enter that in the online quote). Obviously there is no $8000 claim on my previous insurance, no police report, etc. Now I have to get additional paperwork from my previous insurer to send to GEICO to basically show that I'm a good driver and that the accident does not actually exist.

Just want to provide a warning that any information you enter in these online tools, even as hypotheticals that you remove later, is recorded and taken as truth without any evidence or background checking.

EDIT: I appreciate the replies. I totally appreciate that on their end this looks like potential rate dodging/fraud. I'm a young person buying insurance, so I had no knowledge of how an accident would affect my rate and so entered it out of curiosity. My only surprise comes from the fact that they claim there was $8000 of damages and multiple persons injured in a fictional accident, when I did not report any of those details in my quote (and no accident like that is on my CLUE report).

Vehicle Safety discount dropped when I got a better equipped car

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 09:09 PM PDT

I previously had a 2008 base model Ford Taurus, which earned me a $57 "vehicle safety" discount through StateFarm each month. Last week I replaced that with a 2019 Nissan Sentra, which has lane change assist, backup cam, emergency braking/collision avoidance, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise controls, and some other features. My new "vehicle safety" discount is now only $10 a month. How could all of this safety technology cause my safety discount to drop so drastically? Something seems wrong, though all of the technology I mentioned comes standard on my vehicle-- nothing was added aftermarket. So StateFarm must be aware of the features, right? Or were these things that I should have specifically mentioned? I am aware that many of this technology does not earn you a discount, but how could it make the discount worse? Thanks to anybody who can answer!

Car insurance canceled with barley any notice?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 08:47 PM PDT

If I'm not in the right spot, please direct me to where I need to be.

So I've been with progressive for a year now and I've kept full coverage on my car since I'm making payments on it. Well, I get a notice in the mail that it'll end in 15 days for whatever reason. So I go to check my account to see if I missed a payment and it's already closed. I have not been able to contact anyone about it due to the holiday but I'm seriously concerned about my car getting repossessed or my license getting suspended due to my insurance lapsing.

I'm in the process of getting put under my dads insurance for now. But what do I do here? My account was closed by time I got the notice, and that was the only notice sent. Is this normal?

I'm in South Carolina if that helps any

    Car accident

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 06:54 PM PDT

Hey all. I had a car accident and I rear ended a car in the freeway due to the car in front of the person I hit hit the brakes hard when they had plenty of room. Person I hit slammed their brakes and I did too from a distance but my car did not stop due to drum brakes and car is from late 60's. I didn't want to use insurance due to being 19 and this being my 2nd accident which would probably be my 2nd point. But the damages on the other car may be too costly for me. How should I go about reporting this? It's been six days including the same day it happened. How will this affect me. Thank you!

Home insurance claim for pre-existing damage.

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 06:48 PM PDT

    Hi r/insurance,

We were on the path of Hurricane Irma in 2017. Many of the houses in my neighborhood had builders grade shingles that didn't fair well as far as broken shingles. We were not part of the catastrophically hit area, just high winds. My insurance covered my claim for broken shingles. My neighbor's insurance did not. In speaking with him he said he planned to cancel his current policy and go with another home insurance provider. After the "one year waiting period" he plans to file a claim on his roof.

Questions: Wouldn't this be a pre-existing/pre-policy issue that the new insurer shouldn't cover? This just sounds fraudulent.

Also, why one year? That's sounds awkward that you would have policy for a year and couldn't make a claim.

My advice was to fight it out with his current insurer by showing all the neighbors had damage and were covered by the same event/type of claim. Thoughts on my questions? Thanks.

Fiance has upcoming second knee surgery, requires 2-3 months minimum to recover need help with options.

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 11:27 AM PDT

Ill try to keep this short.

My fiance just learned that she will have to have a second surgery to correct the first and repair the damage done so far. She is in her late 20s and we both work a full time job but the pay, admittedly isn't very much but we make it just fine together. She has medicaid so the surgery isn't the problem, its the 2-3 months out of work that will be problematic.

Basically I am unsure of what options we have to support ourselves while she is unable to work, 12 years ago i had 3 surgeries on my ankle and shoulder and my mother applied for FMLA (which i knew nothing about) but to my knowledge FMLA wouldn't apply to her. We live in Arkansas and are low income citizens, but we still make too much to be able to qualify for food stamps. She has at least 72 hours of PTO but outside of that we are stressing on what to do. Any info would be greatly welcomed and appreciated.

    In desperate need of help.

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 01:32 PM PDT

I'm endlessly frustrated. I'm 22 and I live in California and I've been without health insurance ever since I fell off of my dad's military insurance. I don't know the first thing about healthcare, other than that every single time I seek help online I am put through a ringer of forms and redirected from one website to another, never being given any options for plans and never getting anything done. I bit the bullet and gave them my info thinking, of course they'll need to know who I am. However, this has only led to me being solicited by phone literally every 5 minutes with someone from some random company A who wants to send me to company B who wants me to agree to plan X with no alternatives and every time they tell me it's my only option. No one can tell me why or even what the terms of the plan are. Just that I /need/ to sign up. They use aggressive lines and tell me I don't want to be without healthcare. Obviously.

Can anyone just give me... Any guidance whatsoever on this. Where do I start? Who do I ask who will actually be interested in helping me and not just selling me a shovelful of garbage to take advantage of me the second I say that I'm not familiar with the system? I need to look at options. I'm terrified already knowing I don't make enough money for any of this to be easy.

Statement of Loss? Claim through Master Policy in a condo building after water damage

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 05:13 PM PDT

This is my first time navigating a claim with condos. The condo docs indicate that the claim will go through the master policy. The adjuster came and the dollar amount doesn't come close to what contractors are quoting for the work, even the limited work the adjuster is allowing for to repair, so we are still doing some back and forth and may hire a public adjuster to try to find some reasonable middle ground.

The current adjuster wants us to sign a "sworn statement proof of loss" but I am wary to sign anything that may limit our financial ability to repair the damage appropriately. Should I sign this thing? Thanks, Reddit.

    Damage during cross country transport

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 12:59 PM PDT

I recently shipped my car cross country with a 3rd party. After it was dropped off I had it washed and noticed a couple small dents and scratches in the hood. I contacted the initial broker I went through and they told me to contact the transporters insurance company. I did, I still need to to submit additional details to them. Transporter called me and was upset that I contacted the insurance company, he requested that I send pictures, get a quote and stated he would pay for the repair.

Should I continue with the insurance company or try to work it out with the transporter?

Car insurance claim (Indiana/Missouri) - am I being reasonable here?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 04:21 PM PDT

    I live in Indiana.

On May 29th, I was given a car (a 2006 Honda Civic) by a family member.

On June 13th, I went to Discount Tire and paid just under $600 for 4 new tires on the vehicle.

I have full coverage insurance through Geico.

On June 30th, I was involved in a not-at-fault accident with a semi in Missouri. My vehicle was totalled. I filed a claim through my insurance.

Today, the adjuster emailed me a copy of the valuation report and said he'd call back for us to discuss it on Friday. In the valuation report, the value of the tires was listed as $40. Owing to the fact that the tires were literally two weeks old at the time of the wreck, with roughly 1000 miles on them, am I being reasonable in expecting to get closer to the $600 I paid for them? I do have a copy of the receipt for the tires.

Failing that, I plan to buy another similar Honda Civic once the claim has been settled. As such, would it be reasonable for me to request that the tires that are on the wrecked vehicle be returned to me, so I can have them put on the new vehicle when I get it?

I'd like to make sure I'm being reasonable here before I try to press the issue with the adjuster. Thanks for your input!

    Need Help with PIP Form

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 10:18 AM PDT

Hey guys, first post on Reddit, but I need some help with this form.

Background information: I was recently in a car accident with a friend that was driving. The car was not my friend's but my friend's friend car. I was hurt and sent to the emergency room. The bill came out to be over 800$ and was sent to me. In MD there is a no-fault law, which basically means my visit to the ER is covered by the friend who owns that car's insurance.

The insurance company (Triple AAA) contacted me and mentioned that I would need to fill out a PIP entitlement form along with a copy of the medical bills. I am 18 years old M and have not dealt with insurance before.

Here is a copy of that form https://imgur.com/gallery/KRSWq0r

I am not sure how any of the options 1-3 applies to me in this form.

In regards to 1. I do not own a vehicle at all.

In regards to 2. I do have automobile insurance in my name from my father's insurance company, and therefore am a resident which someone in my family does have insurance coverage.

In regards to 3. Again, I do have automobile insurance coverage secured in my name ( through my parents) .

I am thinking about just putting 2 and then getting it notarized would this be a bad idea?

Could someone please help me? I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you

Umbrella Coverage, Do I need it?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 03:13 PM PDT

Insurance agent, whom we have had for many years, is highly recommending we get 1 million dollars of umbrella coverage. The cost is roughly 200 dollars per year. We have around 300k in assets and gross around 220,000k per year. Seems like a no-brainer but would really like to hear other thoughts.

    Thanks,

Purchasing car insurance for a 27 year old grad student in Michigan

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 10:40 AM PDT

I am a 27 year old grad student in Michigan. I have not had a car insurance since 2014 (didn't have a car), when I was under my parent's insurance. My parents live in Colorado. When I visit Colorado, I just drive their car. They have All State insurance and was told that I am allowed to drive their car for short durations.

I am now looking into purchasing a car and insurance in August. I will purchase the car in Colorado, where my parent's live because the specific area they live in has very low sales taxes, and my dad will help me look for a car. I will take the car with me when I go back to Michigan in September. I will be graduating in under a year, and I won't remain in Michigan afterwards.

I'm looking at a few different scenarios to save on car insurance costs:

    (1) Having my dad purchasing the car so that it is registered to his name, or perhaps co-purchasing the car so it's registered to both of our names. And then adding the car and myself to his Colorado insurance plan. Basically, I would just like to be under his insurance plan because it is much cheaper.

    (2) Registering the car under my name only and purchasing my own insurance. I think I'd have to purchase Michigan insurance, which I want to avoid due to the exorbitant price.

    (1) seems like it would be the cheapest option for me, but is it legal? Would I have any issues with coverage if I got into an accident in Michigan? With Michigan being a no-fault state, and Colorado not being a no-fault state, how does a Colorado insurance apply in Michigan? Any advice on what to do in my situation?

Affordable health insurance (California) during six month break between jobs?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 07:35 AM PDT

I live in California, and am thinking about taking six months off work. My MAGI would be like $5K (from interest and dividends). Normally I'd try to qualify for MediCal, but I have substantial assets (like extremely LeanFIRE levels for one person), but I heard having assets will disqualify you. Are there any other options besides a full priced bronze plan?
