r/Stocks Daily Discussion & Technicals Tuesday - Jun 11, 2019 Posted: 11 Jun 2019 01:07 AM PDT This is the daily discussion, so anything stocks related is fine, but the theme for today is on technical analysis (TA), but if TA is not your thing then just ignore the theme and/or post your arguments against TA here and not in the current post. Some helpful day to day links, including news:
Technical analysis (TA) uses historical price movements, real time data, indicators based on math and/or statistics, and charts; all of which help measure the trajectory of a security. TA can also be used to interpret the actions of other market participants and predict their actions The main benefit to TA is that everything shows up in the price (commonly known as "priced in"): All news, investor sentiment, and changes to fundamentals are reflected in a security's price. TA can be useful on any timeframe, both short and long term. Posted: 11 Jun 2019 02:53 AM PDT Governor signed into law yesterday. https://capitol.texas.gov/BillLookup/History.aspx?LegSess=86R&Bill=HB1325 VFF has a 5.7m sqft greenhouse in texas that they're converting to grow hemp and extract out cbd. Because they've been in the veggie business for the last 30 years, they already have existing contracts with big box stores (walmart, wholefoods, krogers, target, etc.) that will adopt the cbd craze. Note 1: They also have joint ventures with various farmers in the states for outdoor Hemp (over 6000 acres). They've planted 1000 acres already and should be harvesting their first batch in July. Note 2: They have another 5m sqft greenhouse in Canada, part of which has been devoted to growing Cannabis (expect 50000kg of mj this year). Note 3: They're currently valued at 650m. Compare this with virtually any other cannabis/hemp player and you will see why they are ridiculously undervalued (cgc, acb, tlry, apha, etc.). And they make money (none of the players I listed do and are valued anywhere from 3 to about 20x more than vff). Note 4: investors can read more about their cannabis operation here: http://villagefarms.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/VFF-Presentation-Roth-FINAL.pdf [link] [comments] |

Tesla Annual Shareholder Meeting live streaming is starting soon. Posted: 11 Jun 2019 12:35 PM PDT Hi r/stocks! Brace yourself for a new shareholder meeting starring Elon Musk. Tesla's annual shareholder meeting live streaming is starting in about 2 hours (2:30 p.m. Pacific). According to data compiled by Bloomberg, the bears still outnumber the bulls: Tesla's stock has 12 Buy ratings, 9 Holds and 15 Sells. Tesla shareholders will convene for the company's annual investor meeting in California, amid one of the company's most challenging months yet. Since they last assembled in 2018, Tesla's market value has declined by more than 30% thanks to a failed bid to take the company private by CEO Elon Musk, which resulted in $20 million fines for himself and the company as part of a settlement with federal regulators. In April, shortly after Tesla and the SEC agreed on new terms regarding Musk's social media usage to end the months-long legal battle, Tesla announced that four members of its board of directors will leave their posts after their tenures are up. Some analysts are becoming increasingly optimistic on the demand picture for Tesla's cars after those same fears drove shares lower by 46% this year. Elon Musk is expected to lay out the challenges facing his company and investors will be voting to re-elect two board members, as well as on proposals relating to supermajority voting and a public policy committee. Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC): Yes, no, maybe so? Posted: 11 Jun 2019 10:49 AM PDT While I'm a noob when it comes to really understanding the stock market, I understand how stocks work in layman's terms. However, when it comes to cryptocurrency, I don't get it - and that's okay. I found GBTC (Bitcoin Trust) which appears to be a stock that I can buy or sell on the market just as easy as Facebook and Google, but is Bitcoin Trust a company that owns actual Bitcoin, or one that traffics in Bitcoins? If the company owns the actual OG of cryptocurrency, then buying shares of the company makes sense IMO. Any insight here? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 11 Jun 2019 01:47 PM PDT Given the most recent volatility in the Chinese markets, I decided to not squander a wonderful crash and went bargain hunting, and will continue to do so for some time. Recently, I initiated a long position on QD:NYSE (Qudian). In the past year, QD have repurchased >25% of their entire market cap in shares. They're also growing at around a 20 - 25% clip, but have been priced for failure - despite all evidence to the contrary, sentiment is unbelievably bearish. Should the stock price drop (which it most likely will given the negative China sentiment), I have 2 more bullets ready to fire. After listing at $30 in 2017, Qudian's value declined by more than 50% in one year, but this does not match their revenue or earnings trajectory. In 2014, they only had revenues of RMB 24,133; in 2018, their revenues grew to 7,692,343. During this time, they've maintained an EBIT margin > 60% and have also gone from (169%) Net Margin to ~32% net margin. For 2019, they've forecasted Net profit of >RMB 3,500,000. The two main reasons for selling off are:
The irony in all of this is that Qudian froze their own direct lending licenses back in 2017, and have been providing off-balance sheet lending via referral to licensed institutional partners for some time. Furthermore, the number of micro-lenders in China decreased from >10,000 to around 1000 today - in other words, the crackdown helps not hurts Qudian, and this is evident with their registered user base growing to >71mm with approved borrowers at almost 26mm. Moreover, the majority of their institutional funding relationships are with major institutions and banks. They don't provide evergreen loans, and any defaults are reported directly to the PBOC, giving an incentive for borrowers not to default. The loss of the Alipay relationship didn't phase Qudian much either, as whilst it drove a large majority of their traffic, it only contributed ~3% of their total revenues. What's also interesting was that after the loss of their Alipay relationship, the S & M expenses decreased to 5% of total revenues vs. ~35% of total revenues, yet their Q1 numbers exceeded analyst expectations by >40% (with their loan book growing 91%). Risks: Qudian is in a young industry where regulatory reforms are frequent. Furthermore, whilst they've maintained delinquency rates at ~3 - 5%, it's important to note that they guarantee in part or in full, any defaults incurred by their institutional lending partners (despite >50% of their transactions being off balance sheet). As of today, the PBOC has capped interest rates at 36% max. There don't appear to be any intention to lower this further, but if there are further cuts, this could hurt QD's profits. Conclusion: Qudian trades at a PE of ~4 today, and a forward PE of ~3. The combination of wrongly assumed regulatory fears and trade war/Chinese recession has beaten the stock down to its current lows. Having said this, if you have a stomach for volatility, I believe this provides an interesting opportunity for ~80 - 110% upside. [link] [comments] |
How the stock price is determined by transactions? - Basic principles Posted: 11 Jun 2019 09:50 AM PDT I'm not talking about how some factors can influence/predict/determine the price (earnings, P/E ratio, etc.). I'm talking about how the supply and demand determine the stock price (more than how supply and demand moves to determine the price). For example: The company X has 100 shares where the stock price is $1. So, the company has a valuation of $100. Now, a specific investor wants to sell 1 share he owns. He offers the share at $1.2 dollars, and it's sold at that price. What is the price of the stock? If its $1.2 means the price of the stock is determined by the price of the latest transaction, which implies if I have one share (at $10 the share) of the company Y (let's assume the equivalent to 0,001% of the company), if I want to move down the price I just have to offer the $10 dollars share to $1, and I would push down the price by 10% as any person would buy it as it's very cheap? This does not make sense. So, how transactions determine the stock price? [link] [comments] |

Struggling to understand: shorting Posted: 11 Jun 2019 01:12 PM PDT I've got a fair amount of experience in the stock market but I have never dabbled in shorting anything. Beyond is an obvious short opportunity but it appears that I am not alone in recognizing this (duh). I am reading that the shorts may be getting "squeezed" - can someone explain this? If you are short Beyond, and the stock continues to rise, why not wait to buy your shares back? Is there a time limit on the buy back or is it just fear of getting stuck owing a pot of money? Thanks to anyone that takes the time to respond [link] [comments] |

Beyond Meat ($BYND) Up 600% Since IPO Posted: 10 Jun 2019 02:03 PM PDT Beyond Meat ($BYND) shares moved higher once again Monday morning. The stock persists at higher than expected levels after one of the most successful IPOs of 2018 2019 so far. The next closest IPO of 2018-2019 has been Zoom Video ($ZM) which is up a mere 185% compared to Beyond Meat's 600%. For comparison Uber ($Uber) is down 3% while Lyft ($LYFT) is down 18%. Beyond Meat shares jumped as much as 34% to $186.43 per share on Monday, marking an all-time high for the company that claims to be "The Future of Protein". Shares for the company closed on Friday at $138.65. The IPO price was $25 per share. Shares, which began trading publicly May 2, have soared altogether 560%, reaching a market value of approximately $10 billion. This forward price-to-sales ratio of 35 seems unsustainable. Tyson Food, for instance, trades for 0.7 times their sales. Credit Suisse analysts see a price target on Beyond Meat shares of $125 based on the company's first-quarter report, as well as a 2030 sales estimate of $3.5 billion. Beyond Meat is trading for about twice that 2030 sales estimate. According to Nielsen, Beyond Meat enjoys just 2% household penetration in the United States. That suggests room to grow for some. But, whether or not the omnivorous American consumer will ditch simple beef or an ultra-processed alternative remains to be seen. To be sure, the U.S. market certainly isn't the only one Beyond Meat is looking at. CFO Mark Nelson called Europe and Asia "very significant" markets for Beyond Meat. He noted that Europe already has a "very well-developed market" for plant-based proteins. Continue Reading: https://goldsilverbitcoin.com/beyond-meat-600-percent-increase-ipo/ [link] [comments] |

Does Vanguard still charge commission on cancelled orders? Posted: 11 Jun 2019 06:23 AM PDT Bought a stick and cancelled it. Is the $7 fee still applied or I didn't have to pay it? Also, do you guys only trade during hours the stock market is open on low liquidity stocks? I'm investing in undervalued small cap stocks at moment, new to it and wondering people's thoughts. Going hefty into $MGI and will hold for a year or 2. [link] [comments] |
