First time leasing a commercial place for a clothing store.

    Posted: 16 Jun 2019 04:11 PM PDT

There is a 2800 sq ft. location available in a plaza with Wal-Mart and Kroger. They are asking for $7500 for rent and CAM only. I was really hoping this would be lower. Do I, as a possible future tenant, have the right to negotiate with them? If yes, then how should I proceed with it? I was hoping it would be around $5000 to be completely honest. I just looked at the spot today and think it has potential. Also, other than the price negotiation is there anything else that I could get their assistance with? Possibly getting furnishing help from them? Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

New company. Not paying taxes on items sold. I'm worried.

    Posted: 16 Jun 2019 11:09 PM PDT

We've been in business 8 months and have around $300k in sales in a handful of states. Our business setup is mostly online. We import from China, warehouse in California, then ship and install in business offices.

We have been collecting taxes appropriately as a separate line item on each sale, but not paying any. I know in California, for example, you're supposed to have a tax license and you're supposed to pay every month. I assume all states are similar.

My partner says we'll be okay if we pay in a lump sum at the end of the year when we hire an accountant, and that the IRS isn't tracking us yet bc it's our first year, and they're more lenient on new companies. I have a hard time believing this.

    How fucked are we?

How to properly track phone call conversions for small business with very low budget.

    Posted: 17 Jun 2019 02:20 AM PDT

    Hello,

Recently I approached a problem of not being able to track website visits to calls conversions while having little budget and small calls number. Reason of writing this post is to see if other small businesses are having the same problem, how they are solving it and maybe find a new way to solve it.

I will start from beginning. My parents own a small second hand white goods shop. Despite the yellow pages online they were not using anything else in digital world. Here I began the journey to PPC. As the business is not booming the daily spent budget is as low as 5 euro. With that money after some testing and optimization I am getting ~50 clicks daily which converts to 3-5 calls. I set up a "middle" phone with seperate phone number which forward all the calls to the main phone which gives me possibilty to track how many calls are coming from website/ads. But the issue here is that I am not able to do any remarketing, optimization or using those conversions in facebook ads (I am trying to import as local conversions but the number of calls is too low).

So, right now I am thinking how can I solve this problem. The best solution that comes to my mind is to make and app which continuously communicates with website and the moment I get a call I send notification to website to fire event for active user(s). Technical side of that seems perfectly doable for me. One problem I see here is that multiple people can be online at the same time, or a person can call the number while being offline (written on a paper or smth.). Errors could be minimized using multiple numbers. But having numbers with a small chance of error seems better than having no numbers at all for me.

Do you guys think it is worth trying? I would be able to make it available for other small business owners. If so, would you use it too? Maybe you already solve it in better way. Please share your thoughts.

Would you guys put up with toxic employees for 3 three days before your vacation or just fire them and close for 5 days?

    Posted: 16 Jun 2019 10:47 AM PDT

I've got a bad problem with two employees that don't really want to be there and share lots of inaccurate stories with newer employees. It's to the point where I refuse to put any of the new people with them.

One of the problem people refuses to follow checklists accurately. I texted a newer person that unfortunately had worked with them asking if he'd really cleaned something because it was obvious he didn't. She never replied. The next day she told him that I sent it and both of the problem people told her to never reply to my texts.

I warned one of the newer people to take one of the problem peoples stories with a grain of salt because I had to have him work with her and thought he was management material but he showed the text to her!

Today the other problem person said he thinks I'm intimidated by him to others.

I'm definitely not, I'm just waiting until I find new people and can keep them away from the toxic ones. I'm ready to do it, but my right hand person is suggesting I wait until after my trip this Fri/Sat. I'd have to close a few days. I've been at it nine years and recently got rid of the queen of the toxic tribe. I'm not there much and it seems everyone became buds with him and the toxicity leached to those that were in his circle outside of work. I wish I would've fired him sooner.

    Legal Issues

    Posted: 16 Jun 2019 04:18 AM PDT

    Hello,

my name is Reece and I'm from the UK, I have been candle making for a few months now, and only now i have become concerned about all the business side of things. I'm not looking to make a company right now, but I'd rather get the knowledge now, I have done hours of research online about the legal side of things but I can't find very much and I have so many unanswered questions.

I am wanting to know if i need any licenses/permits to sell or create such products in the the UK?

I also wanted to know exactly if I need to create my own, unique products, such as my own blends and glassware or can I use stuff from whole salers? Are all these things copyright/patent? can I get in trouble for using this stuff and selling them whilst being a sole trader? I don't want to put my hard work into a product I know I can't use or sell. I already know that wooden wicks arer patent and i believe you can't use them in products I create, correct?

I want to use TB&CD wicks as well can I get into any sort of legal trouble using these?

What are your opinions on this, what actions do I need to take when I get to this point?

    Thanks for your time!

    Moving a Home-based Business

    Posted: 16 Jun 2019 03:47 PM PDT

Don't know if this quite fits here, but if not, just direct me to best place to get the right advice.

Fiancee runs a home-based business (mostly online sales of a product she designs and makes, and occasional vending at an event). Filing the right paperwork to get her a registered with a Doing-Business-As with the State (Illinois) and getting a FEIN for taxes has been a fairly painless process. I feel competent and able to do her taxes each year without being completely lost. She's gotten the advice that she may want to make her business an LLC.

We are ALSO about to move to another state (Colorado). Since we're going to have to do something anyway (end the IL sole proprietorship and start a CO one, to oversimplify it), would this be a good time to look into LLC? I've read that it's taxed pretty much the same, and just might cost a few yearly fees to get registered properly.

I have some land, but don't know how to utilize it.

    Posted: 16 Jun 2019 01:35 PM PDT

Hello r/smallbusiness members. So as the title says, I am the owner of 8 hectares of land in the middle of the flats, 20 km to the nearest town (1km to nearest village), west side of Lithuania, Europe. At this very moment the land is not being used but I'm planning on changing this. The problem is - I don't know how. I would love to get some advice from farmers on how should I realize my land, so it generates me passive income.

The one idea that came to my mind were solar panels / windmills. Saving nature is really important to me and this would be a step in the right direction as little as it would help. The problem is me myself could not afford any of this, and big renewable energy companies would only be interested in buying the land. Is there any way to attract investors and where do I look for them? I've never knew how these things work, but it is time to learn, because land will not generate money just by owning it.

I honestly don't know where else can I discuss this, so hopefully this will be the right place.

How much does your website cost per month ?

    Posted: 16 Jun 2019 06:32 PM PDT

I would like to have an idea of how much it's going to cost to have a website where users can order food online from local restaurants (just 5 restaurants in the first month, I'm in the US) using a credit/debit card or pay with cash and have it delivered by a person. This is the same concept as the food delivery companies such as Doordash or Grubhub. Users would have to create an account to save their personal information, see their transactions, and track their order. Did some research online and found that I will need to pay for the following:

    1. web hosting: on average, it costs $10/month
    2. credit card payment processing: several companies out there, one of them being Stripe, which charges 2.9% + 0.30 USD + tax per transaction
    3. user personal information storage: I couldn't find this one but I'm going to need to store the user's information, securely. How much does it cost to store their info ?

Are there more costs associated to maintain a website like the one I described above ? Any other suggestions ?

As a business owner if I asked you this, would you consider?

    Posted: 16 Jun 2019 06:07 PM PDT

I want to create app/software that will help businesses make or safe money. Especially, the ones that could also be used by other similar businesses. People in the industry are too used to the way things are or don't have time/knowledge to do anything about it. People outside the industry have no idea that problem exists.

So I want to come to your business for two weeks, silently be present by you, ask questions about the whole process, problems, challenges, opportunities etc.

Then come up a way to solve one or more problems I noticed. Then if it works and saves/makes more money then I charge small monthly.

If business had set out to build app/software on their own it'd cost them like 70k. But because I'm a software developer AND many other similar businesses will be using it the cost gets distributed. Win - Win for all involved. It's a form of consultancy but I wont be specialized in the business's industry, but software industry.

    So...hypothetically speaking.

    • would you let someone come and understand your business with fresh eyes in hope to solve problems

    • if not why not

    • if not, what qualities would make you consider it

    • if yes, what would be the good way for someone to go on about this. i.e. not sound like telemarketing guy. as there is nothing to sell, there is chance there will be nothing to sell to begin with.

Last point, since my plan is to build an app that can be used by 100s of businesses It's guaranteed that I'll not build something just to sell to the business owner i'm analyzing, meaning i'm not there to just sell. it's entirely possible from my research i learn that there are existing established dominant solutions that business simply is unaware of and could use them. I'd just recommend them. No point in me basing my whole business model on ignorance of better solution. If existing product couldn't come over that ignorance, I can see how I with no market share will have harder time.

Field service system and organizing my business.

    Posted: 16 Jun 2019 06:05 PM PDT

    Hello everyone.

I operate a small service business with 1-2 trucks on the road every day. I am looking for advice on what field service systems you all use to send jobs to your techs and for when you answer the phones and input the customers information and job details. I send my techs in multiple jobs a day at different locations. I just recently purchased QuickBooks Field Service Management and honestly I don't like it. Doesn't seem up to date.

I just read pretty good reviews on house call pro. I'm currently getting systems in place so my company operates more smoothly so I can scale it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

What is the biggest planning problem you have in your business?

    Posted: 16 Jun 2019 03:58 PM PDT

    Double Trouble

    Posted: 16 Jun 2019 02:06 PM PDT

I have been very passionate about starting my own business to the point where I have fleshed out the idea a lot. I want to start up an online clothing business (there are tons I know) and I know what I want to call it so I looked into any businesses with the same name. Turns out there are actually 2 clothing businesses based out of the UK with similar names selling online. It looks like they're not having much activity though. So my question is would that be a problem for me working in the US? I think I have different messaging/ideas than one of them but I wanted to ask for some guidance on where to look for advice since I would like mine to have a strong online presence as well. Where have you all gone for legal information for your startups? Especially in the online world. Maybe I'd make it a store down the line but that wouldn't happen for a while.

Do these pain points make sense?

    Posted: 16 Jun 2019 08:39 AM PDT

    Hi folks,

I'm re-scoping a consulting/law business I run on the side, aimed at small to medium enterprises, and was wondering if I have identified common problems faced by such enterprises. Part of my pitch (not linking my website, but feel free to message me if you're curious) is:

"Your organization would benefit from The Corporate Health Check if:

It is sometimes hard to track the progress and accomplishments of key people.

Your strategic plan is more than one year old, or has not been mentioned for more than three months.

The positions with the most authority have no formal self-assessment process.

You do not have an up-to-date policy covering: privacy, conflicts of interest, Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation, conduct within and outside the workplace, or harassment and discrimination."

Would any of you recognize the above as problems faced by SMEs?

    Dissolving and getting new LLC

    Posted: 16 Jun 2019 11:57 AM PDT

I'm self employed and I have had an LLC for some years. Every year I pay the $138 fee for the annual report here in Florida, but this year I forgot to file and there is a $400 fine, so the total is $538. Stupid mistake. If I don't do anything they will automatically dissolve the LLC in September. I don't even know if I need the LLC. I do contractor work for the same company and I do own a few websites. I feel good about having one, but I don't care about the name and I haven't really used the name. I don't have a bank account in the LLC name or anything. Opening a new LLC is only $35. Are there any negative consequences if I dissolve the old LLC and get a new one with a different name to avoid the $538 fee? Is that allowed?

Importing Iphones to the UK from the US help

    Posted: 16 Jun 2019 02:52 PM PDT

    Hi All,

Recently moved to the UK looking to import different consumer products to resell online.

For now, I am looking to import Iphones(new or used?) just for a few test runs.

I am pretty confused on which direction to take but hopefully any advice would help. Below is currently what I can think of but not sure if it is the right direction.

I already have a shipping agent in the US to get my products sent to me.

    1) I create a company in the UK and register for VAT. I get the Iphones sent to me and then I resell on ebay etc.

    • I have read that Marginal VAT Scheme would be the way to go for this route, any thoughts?
    • Could I reclaim or pay less VAT through any other tax breaks?

I am not sure how to go about which direction to take, any advice would be greatly appreciated.
