Get a programmer to look at the menial tasks in a department

    Posted: 17 Jun 2019 03:07 AM PDT

For anyone out there that's in charge of either selecting the qualifications for a position or somewhere they could make the request for it, I am offering this tip with 7 or so years worth of experience having jumped through a multitude of jobs from one big company to the next.

The big companies I've worked for include (but aren't limited to): DHL, Samsung, McDonalds, Vestas, and Laureate. So know that when I say what I'm going to say, it's not a problem that just happens to occur to smaller and less organised corporations (though it tends to happen less on smaller companies).

To put simply, within every department there tends to be a massive amount of time that's wasted doing incredibly repetitive and monotonous/menial tasks. Be it taking information from the client and adding it to the company's databases, spending hours on end getting the information from the databases and building a report someone from X department could read, or sifting through the databases to look for mistakes or incongruities. All of them are work and effort that a skilled programmer could automate to free up the employee's time to do more useful things.

That's exactly what I've been doing throughout these past 7 years. I've applied to positions while carrying glowing letters of recommendation with me, looking at the work the department did, and then getting to work creating macros (usually very very simple ones) that took away most of the trudging work and freeing up time so the personnel could spend all that wasted time being productive elsewhere (handling more reports, improving data interpretation quality, spending more time contacting potential clients, etc).

So if you have the opportunity, try to see if you could get a programmer to take a closer look at the more repetitive or time-consuming tasks carried out in a department and figure out whether they can help to improve its efficiency.

Note: Please keep in mind that the tools/macros I created were almost always small and simple things, ones that could be reduced to "Open file, paste data, click button. Now your report is done" that took advantage of the employee's familiarity with programs such as excel to ensure there wasn't much complication in regards to transitioning whatever aspect of their daily/weekly routine got automated.

How far could $20,000 take me in starting up a business?

    Posted: 17 Jun 2019 07:08 AM PDT

I am 22 years old and living in upstate New York. I make $1600 a month which just covers my monthly expenses. I have no debts, a comfortable emergency savings, and I have $20,000 in a separate account.

I want to use this money to make more for myself. I am open to taking a gamble and using it to start up my own business. How far could this money take me? Is it enough to buy product for a store or equipment for something such as a landscaping or carwash business? Any business ideas that I could start up with this kind of money?

Never be afraid to call your local government offices with questions

    Posted: 16 Jun 2019 06:16 PM PDT

I took over my family retail business from my father when he got sick. We sell stuff at conventions in multiple states so have to deal with Sales and Use tax forms in all those states. After fearing I was filing things wrong I availed myself of the customer service lines of the various state Departments of Taxation and Finance and let me tell you those people are life savers.

Not only did they point out mistakes I was making and help me fix them, but they also made suggestions like letting me know when I was able to switch from quarterly to annual filings, saving me tons of paperwork.

A special shout out to the rep from New York (my home state) where I had to file 4 late quarterly returns because I did all of 2018 wrong. Each late return has a $50 penalty plus late fees. After I explained my situation she waived all late fees and penalties.

If you run a small business and are feeling overwhelmed by taxes or other paperwork, your local government office customer service might be able to help.

    Entrepreneurial House - Dallas, Texas.

    Posted: 16 Jun 2019 06:10 PM PDT

    Hello all,

My name is Austin, I'm 21 years old, I live in Dallas, Texas and I'm looking for like minded individuals to come together under one roof.

I have two friends joining me on this venture and we are looking for some other people to tag along with us. We looking to create a space where we can have people collaborate on ideas, work on their own ideas and bring different skill sets but overall have a great time while doing it. We aren't necessarily looking to have everyone work together on one idea/project, you can certainly have your own project that you're working on and if you ever need any inspiration or help we can have one another. Below are some dotted points of some things that peak our interests.

    • Entrepreneurship
    • Friendship
    • Health
    • Gaming
    • Music
    • Sports
    • Content Creation

If these things also interest you and you're looking to move and work with people please send me a PM and we can talk and go further in depth into your interests and goals. We are currently interviewing people and are looking to have anyone join us from ANY background regardless of wealth, religion, race or age. I know this post is a little vague so feel free to comment asking any questions!

Edit: Due to all the interest in this project, please give some time for response. I want to make sure I get to know everyone thoroughly!!

Edit 2: People have speculated upvote bots and possibel MLM ties, this is not true. Fuck MLMs and I don't have the interest, time or effort to buy bots to upvote this post. Where do you buy those things anyways???? Just looking for some good rooming partners that get along with me and my friends.

Whats the purpose of doing that? The sales from the mirror site show up in my shopify store. What steps should I take?

    Questions about social media management

    Posted: 17 Jun 2019 11:49 AM PDT

How's it going everyone! I am a third year marketing student and been interested in something more specifically involving social media. I've been tossing around the idea of reaching out to local businesses to help get my foot in the door for getting some hands on experience, with the possibility of starting a "freelance business" out of it.

That being said is there any recommendations on pricing? Should I charge one price and include anything they need, or give payment options, with different tier levels. Should I focus on businesses that appear to be struggling with social media, or ones with no presence at all?

Really, any info/words of advice helps right not, if this is something you have personal experience with!

Thanks a lot, looking forward to hearing some opinions!

Where is the best place post a "request for product" or "request for startup" post?

    Posted: 17 Jun 2019 01:56 PM PDT

I have a few different products or tools I would like to find, but I am wondering where the best place is to post a request for product and get help sourcing a product/SaaS tool that fits my needs? As an example: I'm looking to find a program that does time tracking across both desktop and mobile devices and monitors all activity (online/websites and hardwired applications too) making it easy to see where time is spent across both devices. This is just an example of a product request, but I'm really wondering where in the future is the best post to a "request for product" type of post?

Could this be as simple as I'm hoping?

    Posted: 17 Jun 2019 12:29 PM PDT

I would like to quit my full time job and take on a part time that I found, that offers full benefits and decent pay. But of course this won't cover all my bills each month so I wanted to supplement with my little business on the side.

I would like to buy cheap cars, fix them and flip them to make up the rest of the money, I'm not looking to get rich off of this. And I would like to just do this from home. My state allows you to sell 5 cars before you need a dealers license.

My idea is to do it slow, in my own time, just to supplement my income. So as long as I only buy/sell 5 cars in my name. And possibly 1 or 2 in my wife's name if needed. Wouldn't I be safe do do this through private sale? And only do maybe 7 cars a year? I'm pretty sure I would only have to have the titles notorized and signed over to me, I fix it. Then when I sell it I just have to sign it over to the seller?

    Is this safe to do?

    Reputation Is Everything

    Posted: 17 Jun 2019 12:24 PM PDT

Happened a while back, and is definitely a firm reminder of the importance of maintaining a good, professional reputation.

I stopped by a retro story in Baytown, Texas.

I was 20 at the time (23 now), and figured it was time to sell my old games that were just gathering dust.

    So I brought in:

    • a Nintendo 64
    • 4 official controllers (1 clear green, 1 grey, & 2 clear blue)
    • Mario Kart
    • Zelda OOT
    • SM64
    • Smash Bros
    • Road Rash 64
    • Donkey Kong 64
    • Pokemon Stadium
    • and literally a whole box of PS2 games.

The store owner's offer: $60. I tried to negotiate, wanting at LEAST $100. But no dice, he wouldn't budge.

$60 for $600 worth of games. So while it wasn't Gamestop, they did have Gamestop's 10% cash value, 12% store credit model.

While I admittedly needed the money (for my first car), I knew what they were worth & was more than willing to patiently sell them on Ebay.

As I was heading out, the guy behind me started conversing with me, said he was looking for an old school console for his son's birthday.

I sold the N64, controllers, OOT & Mario Kart to the guy for $120. Right in front of the shop.

Kinda funny, the owner actually got butt hurt & told me I "can't conduct business inside his store". Guess he thought running me off would somehow get his customer back.

And after I sold maybe 2% of my inventory for $120 in front of his face, the owner actually walked outside & BANNED me from his store & threatened to call the cops if I ever came back.

After the scene he made banning me, he lost at least 5 potential return customers that day:

    • Me
    • My cousin (who drove me there (didn't have my own car yet))
    • The guy I sold stuff to.
    • The guy's girlfriend.
    • The guy's kid.
    • Potentially the people inside the store, who had the unfortunate luck of having to wait for him to get done yelling at the young entrepreneur outside before the checkout line could start moving again.

I later found out that the shop had closed down. While I can't say for certain, I assume word of his immature actions quickly spread around town. Perhaps someone in the store even recorded a video & shared it.

    The lessons to be learned:

    • Reputation is everything. Guard it with your life.
    • Don't be a cunt. Nobody likes/respects a cunt.
    • Dwayne Johnson should be elected President.

I want to create an LLC for my Clothing Company

    Posted: 17 Jun 2019 07:58 AM PDT

Long story short: I have a clothing company that has been underground since January 2017. This is a side-hustle. I currently work part time in the tech industry.

I have been funding my company out of pocket since it's birth. I have invested about $5k into it so far of my own cash.

Does it make sense to create an LLC now that my business appears to be picking up? I plan to take this full-time if it takes off in a way that I can live off.

Am I able to write off business expenses such as advertisement/promoting (models, photographers), inventory (the clothing), my website (shopify), supplies (label printers/adobe products), or even the rent of my apartment which acts as a home office/warehouse?

Thanks for any insight! I am having trouble researching my exact questions so looking for anyone who has experienced this.

    An all tax question.

    Posted: 17 Jun 2019 11:34 AM PDT

New to the sub and to being a business owner. I have learned a lot of great things from posts on this sub and

    I thank you for that.

I sell a handmade product for around $100. It takes about $40 for the materials to make the product, $15 to ship, and $15 to pay someone to make it. My question is, with all of the different taxes (Utah is where we are located) do I pay taxes primarily on the initial product price ($100) ? Maybe I pay taxes after the material price, shipping cost, and/or someone to make it? I'm going to CPA in a week to get everything set up but was just curious about number crunching before hand. Thanks for any help.

I think my idea is bigger than I am, so I’m experiencing slight paralysis of analysis.

    Posted: 17 Jun 2019 11:03 AM PDT

I (36M) have been an entrepreneur my whole life. Started when I was 11, cleaning cars out of my parents garage. I followed my dreams into the industry I'm in now. I got some vocational training, but never went to business school or college of any sort.

So to say I have been to the school of hard knocks would be an understatement.

That hasn't stopped me from doing what I love to do, and trying to be the best at it. I'm not very successful to most standards, but I feel like I live a comfortable life.

That being said, I don't want to be doing what I'm doing for the rest of my life. It's very labor intensive and stressful.

So for years I have been trying to think of "the next big thing" I could possibly go into. And about a year ago, it finally dawned on me. I can provide others with the tools they need to be successful at what we do, (since many are like me and never went through any sort of formal training).

But, it involves branching out into the digital world, which is not my area of expertise in the least bit.

It seems that I can dream up a website, but I have no idea how to put one together. And the people who I have dealt with in the past have often times over sold, and under delivered.

So perhaps that's why I'm a bit intimidated with the idea of going digital, because I've never actually dealt with a web developer who has seen eye to eye with me, or been able to give me what I wanted.

Or maybe I'm just wallowing in my own self pity. But I just can't get past the hump of convincing myself that I can do this. I need help. But I don't know where to turn.

So I came here in hopes that someone else has been through this before, and could possibly shed some light on what worked when you felt like your idea was way too big for you to handle on your own, and what you did to make it happen anyways?

I have a great team working for my current company, and I have tried to have a few help me get the new idea rolling. But with the work load we have at company A, it's really hard for us to find time for company B.

I'd love to sell company A to allow me to focus on company B, but company A does well and it wouldn't make sense to sell. However like I said, it's labor intensive on my end, so it does absorb a lot of my time, making it difficult for me to focus on company B.

Would you be so kind as to fill in my dissertation regarding Airbnb?

    Posted: 17 Jun 2019 11:02 AM PDT

Hi r/Entrepreneur, I imagine a lot of you use Airbnb to rent or Airbnb to host, so given that Airbnb is the topic of my dissertation, I'm hoping that a few of you would fill in my survey.

I'm a student at Manchester Uni studying Real Estate, and my dissertation is studying the economic and social issues and advantages of Airbnb within the community i.e from the viewpoint of different community characters i.e neighbours, hosts, consumers, competitors. If you'd be so kind to fill in the survey I'd really appreciate it!

There are 4 sections but you more than likely do not have to complete more than 1 or 2 with only a few questions within each section. This is because there are questions for each community character so unless you are a neighbour to an airbnb property, a host yourself, a consumer yourself and also a competitor then it shouldn't take you particularly long to fill in.

The survey can be found here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd-8oF0_Lg0nBhSJmRekNnFWD3vkRIiCfGfcjFQE3Jg8yo-_Q/viewform?usp=sf_link

    Denied Business Checking from Chase

    Posted: 17 Jun 2019 10:37 AM PDT

I just got back from my local Chase branch after attempting to open a business checking account, with no success. My business is a subscription service that sells hemp based smoking products and accessories on a monthly basis. Everything was going fine until she asked what my business actually did to make money. She contacted her supervisor and they considered me a marijuana business that Chase does not accept. As far as I'm aware, the most recent Farm Bill legally differentiates industrial hemp, which our products are made from, from the Schedule 1 drug marijuana. Chase's policy states that it will not service those who grow, manufacture, or sell products that contain THC or marijuana. Though since hemp and marijuana have recently been separated, can I appeal this with the Chase branch in order to gain access to a business account? I'm aware that I would need to thoroughly research the new Farm Bill and be 100% certain before starting but I would very much like to have an account with them seeing how I have my personal account with them as well. If this isn't a good idea, does anyone have any recommendations on where I should look next? I didn't believe my business to be a marijuana company, seeing how we don't touch any of the plant, we're a reseller. Are there any online banks that would work with me or do I need to keep cash?

Entrepreneurs in the tech field, are you an entrepreneur or hacker first?

    Posted: 17 Jun 2019 10:18 AM PDT

Read Paul Graham's essay about starting a startup. He mentioned that a lot of people "stumble" upon their startup ideas by tinkering with side projects/learning new tech, etc. For the entrepreneurs in this subreddit who are also coders, did you come up with your idea by working on a side project, or did you actively seek out problems to solve?

If you got fired or quit your day job today, what would you do.

    Posted: 17 Jun 2019 09:38 AM PDT

I haven't been very happy with my job lately and it's a 60 hour a week/100k a year profession. I am an entrepreneur and want to do something big but obviously it is not easily done while working a job such as the one I have now.

So, for conversation purposes. If you were to get fired or quit your job today, what would you dive into tomorrow and grow.

I'm interested to see what you guys would do in this situation. Going from having very little time and just working on your stuff nights and weekends to having enough time to make something a full time job. What would that something be?
