How do you stay positive when business is slow?

    Posted: 18 Jun 2019 06:57 AM PDT

How do you stay motivated when your business is in a slump? I've had my own business before and I remember it being a rollercoaster ride but I forgot how high the highs can be and how low the lows. My business is less than a year old and it's low season so I know business is going to be slow but I'm still finding it hard to stay super positive on the quiet days. I'm trying to maintain perspective but some days it's a real challenge. How do you stay focused on the big picture?

Edit: Thank you all for your wonderful advice and feedback. I don't have anyone to share the ups and downs with so it's meant a lot to me to hear that I'm not alone in struggling with this. This is my first time posting on reddit and I was pretty apprehensive about the responses I would get but honestly, I've just been blown away by how generous everyone has been in sharing their experiences and advice. Thank you!

Area developing with lots of manufacturing / jobs, what are some ideas for businesses to start to capitalize off this?

    Posted: 18 Jun 2019 05:01 PM PDT

As the title states, an area is being planned to add a good number of jobs and facilities which will help grow the population of the town.

I'm looking for ideas to monetize off this change. A few that come to mind:

Rental Properties: Downside is that this is pretty capital-intensive and not easy to scale

Convenient Store: Seems like a good opportunity but there are other C-Stores in the area and I'm not looking to create a job for myself and hiring a manager eats into margins far too much

    Small Business checklist for beginner

    Posted: 18 Jun 2019 06:49 PM PDT

I'm totally new to this small business thing. I have a few questions. Lets say I want to start a HVAC business, I have the skills contacts ect. What are some of the legal requirements to starting a business like this? I imagine I would need to register with the state in some way, in order to pay taxes. I imagine I would need some tax service, maybe turbotax? And is that all to comply with the state? I would buy supplies at wholesale, is there some way to get wholesale prices? I live in North Carolina if that makes a difference for the answers.

I realize these are the most beginner questions, but I have to start somewhere. Thanks

Lead/Form Completions - Is it against Data Protection laws in the US to Create a F.B. Audience?

    Posted: 19 Jun 2019 01:48 AM PDT

    Hi there,

I'm in the UK so not sure about US - we have the whole GDPR issue.

Just wondering, we have hundreds of form completions on our website per week - but we only manage to contact about 50% of them.

Is it 'okay' to create a FB audience and serve specific ads to these people?

    Thanks

Utilizing Email Lists to Generate Leads

    Posted: 18 Jun 2019 05:57 PM PDT

Hello all, looking for a little advice here. I am looking to start a small business on my own. My aim is to generate leads for companies who fund business loans.

I have a massive email list (millions) of people who are currently self employed. I have been looking into how to make the most of this information but it's a rather specific question.

Any advice on how I can create leads from this list? I know I need some type of mass email System but I want to make the most of it from the start.

Anyone ever worried they won’t get customers?

I'm worried after I finish my website, registered my business, applied for insurance, and bought all my supplies. I end up with no customers. How has anyone dealt with that?

Looking for help- customer data base

    Posted: 18 Jun 2019 05:51 PM PDT

Hello all, I own a small business that services homes twice a year. It has experienced an over 50% growth each year for the past 4 years. As it grows I'm needing a way to better track customers, what services we have performed, if they have paid or not, addresses, numbers, past history, etc. I'm looking for something beyond an excel spreadsheet, but not super elaborate. Sonething I can use from a desktop or mobile. Right now everything is done on paper and I feel like that's a stupid way to do it. I'm looking for a basic software that at a glance will let me know how many homes I have left to service and a way to record important info about each customer. Any thoughts or suggestions are highly welcomed. Thank you for your time

How much cash on hand should you have before signing a lease?

    Posted: 18 Jun 2019 05:39 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I'm pricing out an idea to teach programming to middle and high school students in my area. It will be an afterschool program at a brick and mortar location - I plan on doing significant marketing rather than getting something streetside with a big sign in order to bring down costs.

Nonetheless, being brand new to this, I'm not sure how much money I should expect need upfront for a lease. I'm going to try to find a flex space with rent under $2500 (preferably $2000), but are there upfront (or any) costs I don't know about? I figure probably a security deposit or something, but would, say, about $5000 be probably sufficient on signing?

Any advice on the topic in general would be much appreciated!

    Sub-Contractors

    Posted: 18 Jun 2019 03:40 PM PDT

    Hello!

I started a business about 3 years back and have a steady client base that I receive many calls from. It is a construction type business but I have decided to move on from it. Since I am still receiving many calls and have built the company for three years I would like to keep getting value out of it.

I have spoken with a sub-contractor and he just finished up a job for me which went well. I would like to arrange something where I am almost hands-free, I get the call for work and pass it off to the subcontractor. We have agreed that a fee of 10-12% of the gross revenue of the project will be passed onto me.

My question is, how do I stop the client/subcontractor cutting me out of the picture and dealing with each other right off the bat?

Cosmetic Jar Seals - Anything Better than Pressure Sensitive Seals?

    Posted: 18 Jun 2019 03:24 PM PDT

They are a pain to work with. I have to tighten extremely hard to get them to seal. If a little bit of my product (and I mean a little bit) is on the rim the seals won't take. Finally when a seal doesn't take cleaning the rim and re-sealing with a new seal is even more of a PITA! Don't mind using something that is ultimately more expensive or requires a tool if it will make the process of putting a seal on my 2oz glass jars more of a breeze. Thanks!

Need help with retirement benefits for my company

    Posted: 18 Jun 2019 03:03 PM PDT

    Hi folks,

As the title says, I am looking for input on how you would do your ideal retirement planning. As my business has grown, I am now considering offering a 401k through my business to my employees (including myself). If you were in my position, how would you come up with a plan?

My current plan is as follows:

    1) Max out my contribution of $19k per IRS rules. Not sure how to split between traditional and Roth. I can contribute to both.

    2) I would get a 3.5% match on 6% of my contribution. So that would be an additional $665. This would come from my company to me.

    3) Contribute another $35,335 as part of profit share to reach the $55k IRS limit.

Does this sound like a good plan? Is there anything else I should be adding/considering? Since I hold the control, I can set it up as I would like.

Additionally, I am doing this through my payroll processing company. Wife has a corporate job of her own and contributes to their 401k. She is not on my payroll.

    Thanks!

How to make dividends on preferred stock appealing to investors

    Posted: 18 Jun 2019 02:57 PM PDT

So I own a tech company that was open as a c-corporation. We are in the process of taking investors and are offering them preferred stock. Currently our preferred stock is issued at $100 dollars per share, but we have yet to determine the dividend rate. I've done research about this and usually companies have a dividend rate somewhere around 5-8%, which poses the question, how is this beneficial for investors? To put it in perspective, let's say an investor give us $25000 and gets 250 shares. Let's say our preferred dividend rate is 7%, so for his 250 shares he's getting $1750 per year in a dividend. How would that be something anyone would want to do? Where does his ROI start? And as my company grows, will the preferred share price change along with the common. Ultimately I'm asking would i be able to negotiate something that would allow for the investor to get a more reasonable dividend so I don't lose out on having an investor in the first place?

Advice on grants for opening a small business

    Posted: 18 Jun 2019 01:55 PM PDT

Hello, I have been working for a small business for many years, and now the owner intends to sell it to me for almost nothing. I spoke to a lawyer that suggests I form my own LLC and transfer the assets, essentually opening my own business. My question is whether or not I would be eligible for any grants? The current owner seems to think the are a lot out there for a woman opening a small business, but I'm having a hard time finding them in Pennsylvania. Any advice?

Not sure how to interpret the sick leave laws for Santa Monica regarding accrual cap.

    Posted: 18 Jun 2019 01:12 PM PDT

    https://beta.smgov.net/strategic-goals/inclusive-diverse-community/minimum-wage-ordinance

I called but it went to voicemail so in the meantime, it says accrual cap is 40.

Let's say employee hired 1/1/2019 and accrues 40 hours by 5/1/2019. She uses 40 hours of sick time in May 2019. After that, can she start accruing again or is the max accrued of 40 mean over the WHOLE year, or just at any given point.

    Business Name Change from Hell

    Posted: 18 Jun 2019 01:07 PM PDT

I recently changed the name of my business. I've gone through weeks and months of getting the right documents together (i.e. dealing with state government and IRS) in order to properly reflect that name change in all the appropriate places. However, this has caused me the biggest headache when it comes to my commercial vehicle that is registered to my business.

First off, I had to get a new corpcode in order to renew the registration of my commercial vehicle under the new name. After dealing with that for what seemed like months (IRS was shut down) I finally received a new corpcode and everything was squared away. Right? Wrong.

My vehicle is financed with Citizens One bank, and in order to renew the registration under the new business name, the DMV told me I needed to have Citizens One send over the title that reflected the new name. Well, Citizens One has now informed me that they are totally unable to do this, and I will have to refinance the loan with another bank. Yes, they are turning away my business entirely and will offer no more help. They said the only exception is when someone gets married and changes their last name. I explained to them that this is almost entirely identical in the sense that this is the exact same business (same taxpayer ID # etc.) but with a new name. They have offered no more help and am honestly at a loss. Maybe this is a blessing in disguise and I can get better financing, but my god, what is going on?

This has been one of the most frustrating experiences. I'm sure there have been steps along the way that I could have prevented some of the headaches, but I feel there is no way I could've know Citizens One would hold me up like this. I need to renew the registration of my vehicle ASAP, and this is preventing me from doing so. Can anyone help?!?!?!

End of rant. Thank you for reading!

    Citrix ShareFile Alternative?

    Posted: 18 Jun 2019 12:37 PM PDT

We are a small (5 person) architectural firm with the need to send large files via email. We've been using Dropbox but we do get some pushback from clients from time to time with security concerns. We evaluated Citrix ShareFile and like it, especially the outlook integration, but the cost is a bit hard to swallow.

Can anyone recommend a (cheaper) alternative? I've found some options online but when I read the reviews I'm not sure if they are real or not and would rather hear from the real world.

    Thanks in advance!

What marketing blogs do you read, and why? If none, why not?

    Posted: 18 Jun 2019 11:32 AM PDT

I'm curious about the online reading habits of r/smallbusiness.

    Specifically:

    1. What marketing blogs do you regularly read?
    2. Why do you read them? e.g. To grow your business; to feel more confident when marketing problems arise; etc.
    3. How much of your online marketing do you handle yourself, and how much is handled by employees/outsourcing?
    4. If you don't read any marketing blogs, why not?

To answer my own questions, I read MarketingProfs and Branding Strategy Insider, which are emailed to me a few times a week.

I do it to basically refresh my marketing knowledge and to try to keep updated with the latest tricks and trends (e.g. marketing automation) because I handle 100% of my marketing.
