    • What are your objectives with this money? (buy a house? Retirement savings?)
    • What is your risk tolerance? (Do you mind risking it at blackjack or do you need to know its 100% safe?)
    • What are you current holdings? (Do you already have exposure to specific funds and sectors?)
    • Any other assets? House paid off? Cars? Expensive significant other?
    • What is your time horizon? Do you need this money next month? Next 20yrs?

    ETF or dividend portfolio?

    Posted: 11 Jun 2019 08:41 PM PDT

So I'm 24 and trying to set myself up for success. I'm looking at either throwing all of my money into a nice vanguard ETF or making a dividend portfolio averaging hopefully 6-7%. If the ETF also averaged 6-7% would I end up with the same amount of money in retirement?

I'm thinking that the dividend portfolio would do better since I'd be constantly reinventing all my dividends but I'm not sure about the math. Also the fact that near retirement I would have tons of dividends coming in without any loss in capital. Am I thinking about this completely wrong? Pls help

All opinions are greatly welcomed! I love reading what people have to say.

Private wealth management vs self managed index funds?

    Posted: 11 Jun 2019 05:34 PM PDT

What are the pros and cons of these? I like the idea of index funds and it works for me but almost everyone at work who's are much wealthier than me, uses private wealth management instead of doing index funds themselves. I dont know if it's different for them but most of them have over $5m and the CFO has over $25m. I'm guessing they are paying huge fees in the 6 figures per year, and assuming they don't even beat the market.

Why would they use private wealth management instead of an index? Is it because of the peace of mind having someone else mange their money?

Covered Call options when I own a lot of stock I’m not optimistic about?

    Posted: 12 Jun 2019 03:05 AM PDT

    Hi all,

Over the last 8 years I've accumulated a lot of FAANG company stock. It is enough of a share of my portfolio that, given the current techlash and regulatory climate, I would like to sell most of it and reallocate to more conservative investments.

I told my financial advisor to place a limit order for a bulk of it at a strike price that I think will be achievable but still a reach (has hit that price 6-10 times this year). He said I might want to set up a covered call option at that strike price instead, since I already indicated I'm not interested in holding onto any potential upside beyond that strike price.

Wdyt? Is it worth it to do a covered call option when you were for sure going to sell at that strike price anyway?

How do you go about valuing TPL?

    Posted: 11 Jun 2019 08:48 PM PDT

This is a weird company (if you can call it a company). It's a self-liquidating trust that owns almost a million acres of Permian Basin land, and it pretty much entirely does only three things: collect royalties from extraction of oil, gas, and water on that land; sell off land little by little; and use the proceeds to buy back shares. Its "operations" are as lean as you could ask for, and its declining shareholder base ensures that sticking around for a while will give you an ever-growing piece of the pie.

What's it worth, and how much risk should be assumed in the business model due to commodity exposure? The royalty business surely means that you can't simply value it by the land it holds, but what assumptions can we make about the reliability of that income stream? What premium can you give the company based on the royalties it collects, and when does it become worth it to accelerate the land sales?

Looking for a renewable energy index fund

    Posted: 11 Jun 2019 10:57 PM PDT

I've been interested in stocks for a while but fairly new to actually investing. I just started dollar cost averaging Tesla, square, and VTSAX about 3 months ago. Wanting to start going into some other index funds. Just bought MJ and looking for one for renewable energy but can't find one. Any recommendations?

    LFIN bagholder

    Posted: 11 Jun 2019 10:42 PM PDT

I've purchased LFIN at very high price. I see that they're under SEC investigation for defrauding investors. Would I get any settlement amount if LFIN settles with SEC?

The S&P 500 and VTSAX haven't passed where they were back in January 2018, when I graduated college.

    Posted: 11 Jun 2019 08:28 PM PDT

Everyone told me to invest all my money into a low fee index fund. Ever since I graduated college I've been investing all my paychecks into the funds.

They've been lingering around same price since then. Anyone else feel they graduated/began investing at the wrong time.

[Serious] With Fed Rate Cuts Looking More Likely - Whats Your Short/Intermediate Cash Management Moves?

    Posted: 11 Jun 2019 11:22 AM PDT

I have 6 figures in a vanguard prime money mkt fund collecting 2% a year, but with rate cuts looking more and more likely, im thinking about moving it into the AGG for price appreciation in addition to the coupon. Obviously I'm susceptible to downside risk as well.

Any thoughts from you guys on interest rate movements going forward? US is effectively the only country paying positive rates at the shorter end of the curve , and has the highest 30 year yield (ex-Italy) as well. Imo - A fed rate cut plus any sort of recession or volatility creates a flight to quality means Barclays agg goes up

How much does pre-opening movement affect the day’s movements in stock price?

    Posted: 11 Jun 2019 06:24 AM PDT

Been watching a few stocks and noticed, for example, Beyond Meat is down like $10 like right before opening from where it was a few hours ago.

Has anyone done research on how this affects or tends to affect movement over the day? Or is it usually just like normal movements throughout the day, unpredictable and seemingly random?

How to view which funds hold a specific stock on Vanguard

    Posted: 11 Jun 2019 12:43 PM PDT

So I understand how to see which stocks a specific fund holds, but I'm looking to do the opposite. Find which funds hold a specific stock. Any way to do this? Surfed the site for 10 minutes or so and didn't find anything.

I understand the holdings of any given stock are going to be minimal in the vast most of their funds, but it's still interesting + nice-to-know information for me.
