Our condo was recently flooded by the guy upstairs with dementia. The associations policy covered abatement crews, our $ 10,000 1962 floors etc. but State Farm (our own insurer) were awesome!

They covered our relocation fees of $10,000 for the first month and put us in an apartment with furniture and parking etc for another 7 mos. don't know what it cost, but the units in the building were $5,000 a month. They said they'd pay for dry cleaning and all these other expenses etc. but I didn't go there, they'd already done plenty. Also paid to have our stuff packed and stored and moved, etc I sorta believe in karma

Condo had an assessment fee of $3000 that would have required opening a new claim, but I just paid it out of good faith. Been with them for 35 years

So I'm in my car and I slid slightly into another lane and tapped this persons car. Sort of like when your parking and you tap someone's license plate. Of course I stopped. And she sat in the car for an hour with the windows rolled up refusing to even speak to me. Finally a cop comes- which actually surprised me- and I was (rightfully) cited for a lane violation. There was zero damage to my car, and the police guy couldn't even find a paint scratch.

Her left front quarter panel had a tiny dent. The had to look to find it. Whatever ..I was guilty.

I do realize that sometimes they have to replace an entire quarter panel which can be pricey... but today State Farm sends me a letter dropping my coverage. 35 years accident and ticket free and we're now divorced .

I call my agent and he said her repairs (on a 2012 pathfinder) with 10(!) days of rental car fees were $12,000. He said it was classified as minor body damage, but she has her "specialist' who does body work was booked solid for12 days and she felt unsafe driving the car

So two questions: Are the above two things ($60,000) home and overinflated "aiuto accident" related?

How hard will it be to get new coverage for the car? I'd be pissed to find out that they dropped me because of both and now my car rates are in SR22 territory. I suspect the SR22 analogy is overrated. My household claim is still open and I'm inclined to submit legitimate receipts for frivolous things .. but I won't :)

So what's gonna happen to car rates now that I've been dropped?

    Thanks

Deceased husband leaves life insurance 100 % to wife of 30 yrs as 1st beneficiary. Wife survives him, but terminally ill and hasn't yet been well enough to file and claim life insurance.

    Posted: 04 Jun 2019 11:45 AM PDT

What happens if wife dies also before formally claiming husband's life insurance? Wife's estate is still entitled to the funds that she would have received, correct? What would the people handling the wife's estate have to do if she does before claiming? The husband's 2nd beneficiary would not ever be entitled to husband's life insurance, right? Pennsylvania matter. Thanks

Was denied auto insurance and the only alternatives are unreasonably high.

    Posted: 04 Jun 2019 09:39 PM PDT

Hi, so I haven't owned/leased/financed a car in a bit over a year. I've had 3 claims in the past 3 years I did have insurance which was 2 no fault parked car claims 2 years apart. one was for $0 which I canceled the claim for and also no fault.

The reason carriers are giving me is that I haven't had insurance for over 6 months, and that I have 3 claims regardless of fault and regardless that they where low payouts.

What can I do? I already called the Personal Records Center to have them update the claims with them to show no fault. But I just bought a vehicle and cannot get license plates for it because I am essentially barred from insurance.

Was in a car accident, and have pain in my left shoulder.

    Posted: 04 Jun 2019 10:08 PM PDT

I was hit in a car accident this afternoon, on the right front side of my car. The truck was doing a U-Turn, and rammed my car with it's right tail.

I don't have medical coverage, and am worried about how to proceed with a visit to the ER.

I filed a claim through the third party's insurance, and they gave me a claim number, but I am unsure where to go from here.

Do I just go to any hospital, and tell them I was in a car accident?

What tests do they usually do, and what else should I get done, or can I get done?

How does payment work? The agent told me to just use my claim number instead of my medical insurance, but unsure how that works.

    Road Debris Damage

    Posted: 05 Jun 2019 01:41 AM PDT

My friend was driving herself and I down a highway at night when we heard a loud bang. We made nothing of it at the time but when we stopped at my house the car ended up tearing off the front bumper and splitting it in two. She has yet to inform her insurance company, the car is being leased and requires her to have comprehensive insurance. What is the process that she needs to go through in order to resolve this issue.

    *Notes*

    - There were no other cars involved

    - We believe it was road debris from the construction that was happening earlier that day

Large tree fell on shed and clipped house.

    Posted: 04 Jun 2019 09:49 PM PDT

a large tree fell on my shed last week from storms, i filed a claim, but then my friends came and cleared away most of the tree. after the tree was cleared much more damage was revealed. shed and contained items have some water from what initially thought was a hole in the roof. there is a hole but when the tree was removed the sidewall is busted away from the shed. the corner of the house was also clipped pulling away guttering and damaging the aluminum siding.

do i need to put in seperate claims for the house and shed? can i report damaged items that were in the shed? somebody from my insurance company called today and told me an adjuster would get ahold of me soon, and also that i am covered up to $1000 to have someone remove the tree. my friends already cut up the tree but havnt hauled it off or anything yet. ive never claimed anything on any insurance and dont know what to do next.

Cancer survivor here. Will any insurance company cover me with reasonably priced life insurance?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2019 12:35 PM PDT

I had testicular cancer. It sucked, but I've been cancer-free for six years. After that amount of time the doctors use the word "cured" because the chance of re-occurrence drops to the same percentages for the general population.

I've only applied to one company for life insurance, but was immediately rejected citing my cancer. I have some guaranteed life insurance through my employer, but I'm looking to get some kind of Whole Life Insurance to supplement it, and that would ideally double as a savings account. I'm hesitant to spend a ton of time and energy applying to several insurance companies if it's going to be a battle.

Can't they just add something to my policy that says "won't cover if death is directly caused by cancer"?

Can I go through my insurance even if the car who hit me is insured?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2019 08:28 PM PDT

I got crashed into today at a red light. The police and my insurance freaked us out a bit because they mentioned the insurance the girl had wasn't too great so I went straight to a lawyer (don't know if this was a mistake). My dad is freaking out about the girl's insurance company not paying enough so he wants me to just pay my insurance our deductible and have my insurance fix my car since we have full coverage. My question is, can my insurance refuse to fix my car and force me to go through the responsible party's insurance? Or will they have no buts as long as I pay the deductible? Also, was getting a lawyer a terrible idea? And if my insurance is full coverage, can I take my car to get fixed anywhere I want like my car's agency or does the insurance company choose where I need to take my car?

Cancelling my insurance because of secondary driver??? (Canada)

    Posted: 04 Jun 2019 07:22 PM PDT

So i let my younger brother on my policy last year because my parents were in a bind and he was just a secondary, but he never drove my vehicle. Dumbass gets a bunch of speeding tickets, got a few thrown out but eventually racked up three so now his liscence is suspended for 90 days. I somehow have had my liscence for 5 years and never gotten a ticket. So today when transferring my insurance to a new lease the lady was telling me that my insurance is cancelled at the end of this month because of my dumbass brother and ill have to apply for a new policy and lose my loyalty discounts which save me about 100 dollars a month, possibly more with this new vehicle (its roughly the same vehicle just newer) So i wanted to ask if there was anything i could do to save my policy? 1200 dollars a year is pretty substantial when it all adds up. (Im with RBC if that helps.)

Accident - what to do next? (Illinois)

    Posted: 04 Jun 2019 07:07 PM PDT

I got into an accident with a car that ran a red light. It was green for us and the car decided to go through and I t- boned it. Lady came out saying it was my fault and so on. Called the cops, they looked at the video and saw that she clearly ran the red.

I was able to drive my car home, reached out to file a claim with her insurance. She has Founders Insurance, they told me to take pictures of the car but I didn't because I want to take it to a shop to get fully diagnosed. Not too sure what they do with said pictures.

So far, I just contacted them to file the claim and drove the car home. What do I do next? What shop do I take the car to? Is there a list of shops? Is there anything I need to do on my end to make sure I'm covered?

    I'm located in Illinois.

Will my hiring life and health insurance company give me another chance if I don’t pass the state exam?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2019 06:34 PM PDT

I was brought on to a company and chosen out of 4 candidates after 2 interviews. They enrolled me in the online course and I've been cramming info but struggling to understand everything and mostly just memorizing questions on the practice exams.

My big exam is tomorrow and I'm stressing bc this is a big opportunity for me, I know you can retake the exam if you pay, but will the company move on or reconsider if I don't pass, or will they stick with me and allow me to retake and stills Bring me on? I really would love this job and have been unemployed for like 4 months now.

Life Insurance with Estate and Son as Beneficiary

    Posted: 04 Jun 2019 06:09 PM PDT

    Hi Reddit,

I posted about this to r/legaladvice before finding this subreddit but didn't get much of a response. I'm hoping someone here can help clear this up. I have more information now too.

My Dad passed away and had a life insurance policy through his employer. I've been told by his employer that the life insurance beneficiary paperwork is done electronically and under beneficiary there is a default term of "to my estate" and 100% allocation. My Dad filled out the paperwork and instead of erasing the default "to my estate" he simply listed my name and SSN below that. He did the same thing under his HSA.

So after submitting his death certificate, initially I was told I was the beneficiary and would receive a check in the mail. The check came 'to such and such estate" and I called to inform them of the mistake. His employer told me that must be a mistake and would sort it out. Now the insurance company is saying they can't possibly issue me a check because of that default term. They are telling me to go through probate.

The problem is that my dad had no other "estate" so I was going to submit a small estate affidavit so there would be no formal probate process. The amount of the policy exceeds the limits for small estate probate. I live in another state half the country away so probate will be a huge hassle for something that is supposed to stay out of it. I also don't want the fees associated with a full probate process to eat up the policy.

I also was able to find the messages my Dad sent regarding all this when he got this job and he clearly states I am to be the beneficiary and he was happy knowing he'd be leaving me something.

So has anyone encountered this before? I have never seen benenficiary forms with a default under it and everything I've researched says it goes to a named beneficiary. I am named. His HSA was paid out to me without issue.

I am planning on calling the insurance contact tomorrow now that I have those messages as proof but am hoping someone here can help more.

Having hard time getting insurance for an older car

    Posted: 04 Jun 2019 05:54 PM PDT

I'm in Ontario Canada, and I purchased a car from 1992. I probably should have done my homework before purchasing because I'm in a bit of a tough situation.

Most standard insurance companies won't cover anything that old. I have yet to do an online quote that's worked. However in order to qualify for classic car insurance I need to be at least 26 or have 10 years driving. Both of which I'll reach in 1 year from now. So im in this strange spot where no one can insure me for this car.

Does anyone know of any companies that will cover an older vehicle or any advice for me to find it. It doesn't need to be classic insurance, I'm just trying to get this thing on the road to enjoy it.

    Pet insurance question.

    Posted: 04 Jun 2019 05:40 PM PDT

Signed up for pet insurance about the same time my little girl started showing signs of sever allergies. Since we we're past the 14 days its considered a pre-existing condition and they won't cover anything for it. I get that.

What I'm having trouble with is the fact that based on this they would not cover an allergy test to find out what she is allergic to. I get not covering treatment for it since it's pre-existing.

Anyone know of any pet insurance that would at least cover the diagnosis of something that is pre-existing by symptom only?

Do I need to use the same public adjuster for a follow-up on an existing claim?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2019 05:26 PM PDT

Long story short, house got damaged, hired public adjuster, wasn't happy with him at all for various reasons, not least of which was him flat out lying to us.

Got a small claim from my insurance company and spent much much much more repairing and renovating. Repairs now done. Need to file the claim for the depreciation and loss of use. Claims adjuster contacted my public adjuster and now he's been calling me and messaging me that we need to use him for the follow up.

    Is this accurate?

Can multiple homeowners deductibles for different types of damage add together for a single incident?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2019 11:27 AM PDT

I just received a quote for homeowners insurance with 6 separate deductibles: "policy deductible", fire/lightening, water, wind, hail, and theft/vandalism. Each of them is $1000. Imagine my roof is struck by lightening while having shingles torn off by the vicious winds, damaged by hail, and some local rogue also steals a bunch of my shingles while this is all happening. Does the "policy deductible" apply here and cap my liability at $1k or would I need to pay $4000 towards the new roof because the night's damages are split into separate incidents each with their own type?

Field Appraisers! What brand power inverter do you use?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2019 05:17 PM PDT

    Hello!

I use a Panasonic Toughbook Laptop at least 9+ hours a day. I am running into an issue where both batteries are losing juice around hour 5-6 (not consistent usage, but spaced out randomly). I am also on my third portable power inverter.

I have tried two from Best Buy (brand unknown, output was 165w) and purchased one from Walmart today (can't remember brand, output was 175w). The laptop puts out around 110w (per the charger port). The Best Buy inverter originally worked occasionally and then just stopped altogether. The Walmart didn't even try.

Before I waste time contacting help desk (😒) can anyone suggest a useful product?! We're starting to get busy again here in VA! Thanks!

buying car from relative with 3 months left on payment. Do I need collision?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2019 05:06 PM PDT

Long story short my car broke down recently and my Grandpa is going to sell me his car he has nearly paid off and he is going to get a new one. As I understand it, he needs to maintain his collision insurance until he gets the title. Would I be able to insure it with collision insurance to satisfy the bank(and he can cancel his insurance)? or does he need to maintain it personally? If he needs to maintain im assuming he can just add me to to policy so I can drive the vehicle in the meantime?

    Small Business Professional Liability

    Posted: 04 Jun 2019 04:44 PM PDT

    Hi r/insurance,

My mother runs a very small online business where she sells worksheets and school activities and knitting and craft patterns on the internet. She doesn't sell physical products and the business runs entirely out of our home—everything she sells is digital, distributed by two online ecommerce platforms, Etsy and Teachers Pay Teachers. She recently started looking into freelance writing and writing articles for a blog and things like that. She emailed the company that currently insures her existing business to ask them about adding authorship to her policy, to protect her from things like plagiarism claims and various liability issues (I'm afraid I don't understand insurance super well so I don't fully understand all of this), but the insurance company called her and told her that she had NO professional liability protection at all—the only thing the existing policy (that she's been paying for about 8 years) covered was things like slip-and-fall damage (which doesn't apply since customers never come to our home or anything like that) and there was nothing to protect her from copyright trolls or anything like that. When she set up her existing policy, the person explicitly asked her if she was "creating content" and made a note in the policy that she was doing so, the person she talked to (this was kind of a long time ago) never told her that she wasn't protected professionally. My mom is very concerned, she has contacted a bunch of insurance companies, one gave her a quote for a cyber policy and a professional liability policy, these policies are MUCH more expensive than what she was paying before and they cover a lot of things that don't really apply to my mother, for instance the cyber policy covers data breaches—like if she gets hacked and someone gets information about her customers, she'd be covered if someone tried to sue her or something—the thing is, due to the fact that she works through ecommerce platforms and sells digital products, her interaction with customers is really, REALLY limited, the only information she has about them is their name, the city they live in (for tax purposes), and the email address associated with their logins. My mother is concerned about going without an insurance policy because she is not an LLC (and becoming one isn't really practical for her because separating her assets from the business assets isn't really possible) and she is concerned about someone trying to sue her and go after everything we have (even though she does not plagiarize and tries really hard to ensure that all of her work is original and that no one can accuse her of stealing stuff).

Does anyone have any advice on what my mother should do and how she should handle this situation?

    Thank you!!

Comprensive auto claims - not chargeable?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2019 04:16 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I am considering filing a comprehensive claim for damage by falling objects - I have about 18-20 dings of various sizes on the roof and hood of my car. Lease end inspection quoted about $1,200 to fix them all, my deductible is $500, local PDR shop looked at pictures and told me to scram.

I've had two claims before this - both windshield replacement, 100% covered in my state, no deductible.

I was told that comprehensive claims are not chargeable, and therefore won't increase my premiums. I was also told it varies by state. I googled, and found articles that state that comprehensive claims are never chargeable, and that comprehensive claims increase your premiums by an average of $X.

I called Allstate, the claims department (local agent went home for the day), and they said:

    What does "chargeable" mean?

    Followed by

Premiums are determined by an algorithm so there is no way for us to know how it will affect you.

What's the deal? I'm in SC. I will obviously not have this exact car for long, but I will get another in the near future, so what can I expect?

Filed 3 claims for minor bumper damage and scratches but don't want to have them repaired after all. Will my premium still go up?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2019 03:59 PM PDT

I've had my car for 5 years and in that time, I put a minor dent in the front bumper, scratched the paint a little while shoveling snow off of it, and scratched the rear bumper from a garage door clipping the back. I decided to see about getting all of this fixed today and went for an estimate. The shop told me to file 3 separate claims about this, which I did (through Metlife). It turns out I won't get much help from the insurance, so I decided to live with the damage and I'm having them not pay for anything. I filed all the claims today even though the damage has happened over 5 years. If no other vehicles were involved with any of the claims and the damage is minor, will my premium still go up? Did I just screw up royally?
