    Forensic Accounting

    Posted: 14 Jun 2019 05:02 PM PDT

I am currently interning in audit at a big 4 firm and I have an interest in forensic accounting.

I have always wanted to be a forensic scientist As that's originally what I went to school for. I now believe that I would love to be a forensic accountant because of the investigative side of things as well as the knowledge that it would take. It also usually falls under the consulting branch at the big four and I always thought that was more of my speed, though I do like numbers and love accounting. Some jobs that I have considered because of my interests in the past are a lawyer, or and a private detective, so I think forensic accounting would be right up my interest alley. Ideally, I would still want to do it at the big four and not the fbi

What what is it really like? How much accounting is actually involved? What is something you wish you knew before going into it? I feel like it's something that I would literally stay up all night doing because I would enjoy it so much. And should I add on any minors or start looking into any specific knowledge now that I know that's the path that I would enjoy? Should I specialize my MBA when I get it? Anything that I'm over looking?

TLDR: what's important to know about forensic accounting other than what is taught in school?

Anybody else thinks Roger Phillip is a hot instructor?)))

    Posted: 14 Jun 2019 05:34 PM PDT

)))) I got a few days free trial. And just i liked his personality.

I could not quite understand how much better he might be as instructor compared to Becker instructors.

I do like his personality better for sure, but I could not say that he gave more details on topic, or something like that. So I am not sure his lectures are better. For 2 days of trial i thought that he had less lectures than Becker . is it so?

what do you think about Roger's lectures? How do you compare them to Becker's lectures or Gleim lectures and others?

    Thanks,

    Jennifer

    History of Accounting?

    Posted: 14 Jun 2019 10:39 AM PDT

I was sitting there thinking about how accumulated depreciation was invented...

Then I was curious to how accounting evolved in general. I've only really seen books that cover enron and recent history. Does anyone know of any good books that cover a timeline like earlier than this?

Something that maybe starts with double-entry bookkeeping to accruals and evolves to what we know it today.

    Thanks

How do small firms pay compared to big 4 and larger firms?

    Posted: 14 Jun 2019 09:48 PM PDT

How does the starting salary at a small firm differ from larger firms? Also, what is the pay progression like? Do they normally pay more or less?

I'm in the Greater Toronto Area, but info about any region would be appreciated.

Take small firm offer or wait for top 10?

    Posted: 14 Jun 2019 03:47 PM PDT

Recently let go from a small firm. Really unexpected. Hit the ground running with my job apps and now have lots of interviews.

One made me an offer. Comp is on par, 5k more than my previous salary, and I liked my office visit. No complaints really.

But because of what happened at the previous small firm, I'm scared to go to another one. I'm afraid it will be a repeat. Based on the prior firm my opinion of small firms is crappy workpapers, limited software, lack of training. People actually told me multiple times that they "don't have time" to answer my questions. It was a "figure it out" type of training. Plus when they let me go 1. It was effective immediately, couldn't even get my CPE certificates off my computer 2. They made my managers tell me they aren't allowed to provide a reference 3. They disputed my unemployment claim. (Fyi I was approved, not terminated for cause).

Background: I started with and did 2 years at a top 15 firm. Worked longer hours but I am ready to deal with that if it means better training, experience, and some sense of security. A fully functioning HR department for example.

So I had the first interview with a top 10 already and she said she is interested in me so is sending my info to the managers. She will get back to me next week. I have a scheduled first interview with 2 other top 10 firms next week. All 3 are the result of referrals from people I know who work there.

But that doesn't mean I'll actually get an offer from them. Plus, one of them said they don't have a lot of training either, mostly on the job. So should I just accept the offer I have? Are all small firms a gamble? Edit: recruiter wants an answer in 2 days.

[CAN] CPA in need of advice

    Posted: 14 Jun 2019 02:08 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I obtained my CPA a year ago and am currently a Corporate FA at a privately held company. I've been interested/wanting to take some courses in Financial Modeling/Forecasting, but am having a hard time finding stuff. Are there any accredited certificates for this out there? I found a three-level certificate from the Financial Modeling Institute (link below), but not sure how it holds it weight. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Also, my fiancee and I are thinking of a possible relocation to Texas for a few years - I was in and out of Houston while working at a B4 for a few years previously; so a certificate or something that is accredited world-wide would be a bonus. Thanks all!

Bad grade going from Big 4 intern to full-time employee

    Posted: 14 Jun 2019 09:17 PM PDT

I'm an advisory intern at a big 4 firm for the Summer and just got informed that I will be reapplying for my full-time offer at the end of the month.

My problem is since getting my internship, my GPA has fallen quite a bit, from a 3.53 to a 3.4.

I got a D+ in an accounting course and will be retaking this class next semester for a grade replacement. I am currently an accounting & information systems double major and the practice I am in is an IT position.

Given this, I am worried about how my grades (most specifically my D+) will affect my success in getting a full-time offer from the position that I currently have.

    TL:DR:

    • GPA went from 3.53 to a 3.4.
    • Got a D+ in an accounting course that I will retake next semester.
    • Is there anything that I could do to help better resolve this issue?
    • How significant are grades when put into perspective of performance at the firm this Summer?
    • Should I gear up to start planning to look at full-time elsewhere?

Applying for an internship with the company's consultants?

    Posted: 14 Jun 2019 07:07 PM PDT

Just started a (six month) internship in the Internal Audit department for a public company two weeks ago. How awkward would it be for me to apply for an internship with the company's consultants?

When to file sales tax return in California?

    Posted: 14 Jun 2019 06:56 PM PDT

My relative started a business in CA, with a location, and filed for a business license, etc. However, they didn't fie a sales tax return in 2018 because someone at the CA board of equalization said they needed to send payment/file in Jul 31, 2019. They started the business in August 2018. I'm reading online and for 2018, it looks like they should have filed in Jan 30, but paid for fiscal year Jul 31, 2019. Is that correct?

    Marketing Scam or Great Job??

    Posted: 14 Jun 2019 06:52 PM PDT

My husband doesn't have a reddit so asking for him. He currently works at a pretty big but not big 4 firm as a manager. He was recently recruited by and offered a job at Siegfried Group. The pay seems great but is it too good to be true? Has anyone worked there who could offer some insight?
