We just raised $4.5mm for our cannabis hardware startup, AMA. Posted: 30 May 2019 08:20 AM PDT Hey everyone! My name is Yoni Ofir, I'm a serial entrepreneur in the consumer hardware space. I am the Co-Founder and CEO of LEAF (www.getleaf.co) and automated home growing device for medical plants and food. We recently raised $4.5mm to fund our mass manufacturing operations (https://www.newcannabisventures.com/automated-home-growing-system-maker-leaf-raises-4-5-million/) and I thought it would be fun to do an AMA to talk about anything fundraising/entrepreneurship/cannabis industry/hardware related! Edit 1: Here is how we raised money when we were "brand new":
Our first round was raised from Advanced Nutrients (nutrient company in the space), Phyto Partners (VC firm in the space), and two angel investors, it was a SAFE Note (https://www.ycombinator.com/documents/) with a $5mm Cap Edit 2: I had a startup before LEAF that was called Alcohoot, we developed the world's first smartphone breathalyzer, and it was acquired in 2014 by Vertisense. Posted: 30 May 2019 07:06 AM PDT Backstory: I run a furniture store/wholesale company and as of late I have felt a little depressed. I have always been told to delegate work is the best way to do work and I took that to heart. So now my retail side is generating $1.2m gross and $300k net per/yr and the wholesale side is running at $4m gross and $600k net per yr. You would think with this success i'd be more then content but as of late I have felt EXTREMELY demotivated and lost. I have delegated work to a way where if needed, I could never step foot in my businesses except for one day a week and be doing the exact same numbers if not more. I have all the free time I want but nothing to do with it. Has anyone experienced this and how did you get over this slump? [link] [comments] |

After 500+ hours, I launched a podcast guesting tool (as a non-developer) Posted: 30 May 2019 11:17 AM PDT Hey, I'm a marketer at heart, and for a loooooong time I've wanted to launch an app in the tech space. The problem though, is that is I'm non technical. Basically an idiot who can copy/paste HTML. So 6 months ago, I decided to take a leap. Since I've been in the podcasting space for the past decade, I know that podcast guesting is AMAZING when it comes to marketing yourself/your business. I mean, there are big shows, that get hundreds of thousands of listeners per episode, but the problem is that it's very time-consuming to identify these right podcasts. A typical podcast interview takes less than an hour to record, and you can do it from anywhere in the world, fully remotely. For instance, Laura Roeder of MeetEdgar has leveraged the power of podcast interviews and has grown her business to 1.25 million monthly visitors to their site and over $3,500,000 in annual revenue. Steven Sisler, behavioral analyst and author, generated $175,000 from a single interview. Best-selling authors like Mark Manson and James Clear climbed to that status by strategically doing interviews before their book launches. So..I decided to build an app, that lets you browse thousands of interview-style podcasts, email the hosts directly, and gain massive visibility. Basically a tool for effective marketing in the podcasting space. **After 500 plus hours of work, I finally got the beta out of the door. It's not perfect at all, but it works.**Since Reddit has awesome marketers, I'd love your feedback so I could make 2.0 better. Check it out at www.podcastwise.com! [link] [comments] |
ATM Machine Owners: Could somebody explain how content is displayed on ATMs? Posted: 30 May 2019 11:15 AM PDT I recently noticed an opportunity in ATM machines and I'm curious as to how content is displayed on the screens. Not at an electronic level, but at a software/network level. From what I can tell, data is sent mostly over dial-up (not sure how old the stuff I read is, but these aren't very complicated machines, so I'm not surprised) or cellular. I get that there's a host processor in between the ATM and the bank where I imagine all the server-side stuff is done. I presume for my idea (not displaying ads, but serving up similar - but much more important - content) to work, I'd need to talk with them. And then, of course I imagine all ATM's are different, some, like credit union ATMs (where I'd probably start because of the humanitarian nature of the business) are very barebones and probably limited in the content they can serve up. TL;DR Is it possible to send visual data from an ATM host processor to an individual ATM and/or ATM network and what are the technical things I'd need to consider. I'm not totally sure if this is the correct place for this, but most searches for ATM's on reddit point here and I do want to make a business after-all. [link] [comments] |

What he said seem real but I really don't like he overall style and personality. This is probably not relevant but he seems so old I always have the belief in my mind that what he's teaching doesn't work anymore or is irrelevant / not up-to-date. Calculator & Spreadsheet For Your Online Sales. Posted: 30 May 2019 02:14 PM PDT I recently created an online spreadsheet and calculator for many popular platforms such as Ebay, Amazon, Etsy, Poshmark and many more. I made one similar to help me calculate my profits when I started selling online and later decided to give back and make a big one for all the online sellers. I hope this helps somebody and educate them about online fees. Please let me know if any improvements can be done. Thank you. [link] [comments] |

Recommendations for General Liability Insurance for remote work? Posted: 30 May 2019 01:58 PM PDT I do work that only requires a laptop, phone, and connectivty. I need to apply some coverage to my business and am seeking advice for GL insurance. I don't know if you could really call what I do a "home based business" as I travel, work in coffee shops, libraries, etc. No rules or office for me to show up to. I've seen a lot of policies for home based businesses but want to learn about what some alternatives could be. Any recommendations would be most appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 May 2019 01:24 PM PDT It needs to work with Zapier so a client space can be provisioned automatically. And it would be awesome if access to individual documents (pdfs) could be granted/taken away subject to things happening via Zapier. PDF stamping/watermarking would be fabulous. WordPress Membership platforms won't work for me because (a) I don't want to code (b) fiddle with shortcodes & (c) they all seem pretty useless at integrating with Zapier. I'd be very grateful for your advice, recommendations or general comments. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
What The First Six Months of Creating Marketing Infrastructure and Running Ads Looks Like Posted: 30 May 2019 01:16 PM PDT I've never posted on here before about my journey with my brother to start a marketing/advertising agency, but I've written up a quick 'guide' on how our first six months with a client has gone. We've done good and bad, we've learned a lot in the process, and we are continuing to learn and improve as we go. Don't know if anyone is interested in this sort of thing, but hey, why not? We've been working with one of our clients for six months now, so I wanted to do a quick write up of what we've been able to do in those six months in terms of ad spend/profit. As you'll see, we've been able to do very, very well for our client in terms of what we've spent versus what we've brought in! DECEMBER Revenue $ 112.02 Ad Spend $ 303.13 Ad Profit $ (191.11) We started with our client in the middle of December. The first few weeks with any client is usually spent making sure all of the background marketing infrastructure is there (funnels, email campaigns, social media pages setup properly, etc.) so we didn't do too much with ads this month. We spent $300 on a few test ads to make sure our targeting/copy was working properly (which is what we do with every client we have). JANUARY Revenue $ 952.38 Ad Spend $ 834.56 Ad Profit $ 117.82 We started to ramp up our ads in January after we knew that all of the infrastructure was there and that our targeting/copy/ads were setup properly. As you can see, we spent $830 on ads this month and brought in $950, for an ad profit of $120. In only the second full month of us working for our client, we were able to be profitable on our ads. While $120 may not be much, it shows that our ads are working and are hitting the right customers. FEBRUARY Revenue $ 3,236.36 Ad Spend $ 977.44 Ad Profit $ 2,258.92 WOW! This month was the month that proved we were spot on with our ads, as we spent $977 and brought in a whopping $3,236 in revenue, for an ad profit of $2,259! At this point, we were very confident that the ads we were running were setup properly and any other one-time ads we were running were going to work. MARCH Revenue $ 4,569.80 Ad Spend $ 1,233.94 Ad Profit $ 3,335.86 The best month we've had so far! We bumped up our ad spend to $1,233 this moth, but we also bumped up our ad revenue to $4,569! Our ad profit this month was $3,335! At this point, there is a lot of leaving the ads that were doing great to just run and testing various other types of ads to compliment them. APRIL Revenue $ 2,399.11 Ad Spend $ 1,336.12 Ad Profit $ 1,062.99 This month was good, but definitely not as good as the past couple. We spent $1,336 on ads and brought in $2,399 in revenue; for a profit of $1,062. Obviously this is still better than before, but not as good as what we were accustomed to. There could be many reasons for the decline, but at this point we continue to try new ads that can bring in more clients. MAY Revenue $ 1,476.22 Ad Spend $ 1,354.82 Ad Profit $ 121.40 May has been disappointing for us. We spent about the same on ads, $1,354 and only brought in $1,476, for only $121 in ad profit. Again, there can be many reasons for the sharp decline, but we continue to try and shake things up to bring the numbers back up. At this point we have shut off most of the ads we were running in order to at least bring the ad spend number down. SIX MONTH TOTALS All told, in the past six months, we've spent $6,040 on ads and brought in $12,745 in ad revenue, for a total ad profit of $6,705! Some months have been better than the others, but so far we're in the green (positive ad profit) in five out of the six months we've been working for our client. We've MORE THAN DOUBLED what we spent on ads for our client! Now obviously the totals have fallen in the past couple of months, and again, there could be any number of reasons why. But that doesn't mean that we aren't always working on ways to bring those numbers back up. Part of our strategy is to find an ad setup that works great, run that and build off of it. But marketing/advertising is fluid; so you have to constantly be able to modify what you are doing or things are going to get stale. We're at the point where we will continue to brainstorm and try new things in order to turn these numbers back around. [link] [comments] |

Now lets begin… "Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise". Or "the early bird catches the warm". Many of us have heard about all these nice quotes about waking up early but how true are they? Are there any real benefits of waking up early consistently? I can say indeed, it helps. And as Philip Doddridge aptly put it, "The difference between rising at five and seven o'clock in the morning, for forty years, supposing a man to go to bed at the same hour at night, is nearly equivalent to the addition of ten years to a man's life." Johnathan Swift is also quoted saying "I never knew a man come to greatness or eminence who lay abed late in the morning." You can bet that people have, over the years, observed benefits that come to waking up early. And in this video, I will explain some of these benefits, in detail, to give you the motivation to want to do something about waking up early NOW. Keep watching. #1: Get More Hours To Do More And Get Ahead Successful people like Bob Ferguson, Bill Gates, Barack Obama and Caroline Burckle inspire a lot of people around the world. In fact, many of us would give anything to be like them in some way. The question is; what is it that they do that the masses don't do? What sets them apart? Well, while there may be other things, one thing is true; they wake up early. Besides the quotes I mentioned earlier from Johnathan Swift and Philip Doddridge, Caleb C. Colton has another powerful quote about waking up early and its relation to getting more in life: "Early rising not only gives us more life in the same number of years, but adds, likewise, to their number; and not only enables us to enjoy more of existence in the same time, but increases also the measure." There is an explanation to all this: A recently conducted research published in Science Daily by the Feinberg School of Medicine at the Northwestern University showed that if you are a late sleeper, you are likely to wake up late. As you can guess, waking up late messes up much of your day. The study examined the sleep patterns of 96 participants and proved that all those who slept and woke up late had unhealthy habits of devouring on junk food, lived sedentary lifestyles and accomplished a lot less than they were capable of doing. However, all those who slept and woke up early had extremely healthy habits. They ate healthy, lived an active life and completed many of their tasks on time. Waking up late once in a while is normal, but if you make it a habit, it never helps in life. Just recall all those times when you woke up at midday every single day (after bingeing on Netflix, playing computer games or after a night out with friends). Odds are, you felt extremely frustrated and agitated for no good reason, kept snapping at people throughout the day, did not get anything accomplished and went back to bingeing watching movies etc. While you may blame many other things for not getting anything done, the truth is that your bad sleep routine did have quite a HUGE role to play. Lemony Snicket even has a powerful quote about how waking up late messes up a day, which I know you will agree with: "Morning is an important time of day, because how you spend your morning can often tell you what kind of day you are going to have." If you want to get more out of your life, you MUST commit to waking up early. It is the time that sets the pace for your life every single day and if you start your days with vigor, you can expect to proceed with vigor and push until the end. In simple terms, if you start your day by 'winning' the part of waking up and getting your morning stuff done successfully, you can be sure to WIN the rest of the day. #2: Waking Up Early Can Support You To Build Good Habits And Plan Your Day Listen to any motivational speaker or a successful person talk about how he/she climbed up the success ladder and they are sure to bring in the topic of good habits. You need to have the habit of being active, doing tasks on time, meditation, planning your day and so on to achieve your goals. If you are wondering how to build good habits, the best place to start is to rise early. The Attorney General of Washington State, Bob Ferguson, wakes up around 5am daily, CEO of Apple Inc., Tim Cook wakes up around 3:45am daily, CEO of PepsiCo, Indra Nooyi, rises at 4am every single day to make the most of her day; Jeff Weiner and the CEO of LinkedIn wakes up at 5:30am daily to ensure he stays productive throughout the day. You know the list goes on and on, but the fact of the matter is- all these people are successful, wealthy because they have built good, success yielding habits over the years and that's because they start their day at the crack of dawn. If you want all of that, sleep early and rise early. I know you might be wondering how waking up early relates to all this and the reason is simple; when you wake up early, you have enough time to engage in a morning routine, which may entail activities that you would ordinarily not engage in if you wake up late. For instance, you could meditate, pray, plan your day, say affirmations, work on difficult projects, exercise and do lots of other important things that you would perhaps not engage in if you woke up late. Tony Robbins, the self-help guru, is one person who is passionate about waking up early and engaging in his morning routine, which he refers to as priming, which he engages in for the first 10 minutes after waking up. During the first 10 minutes, Tony Robbins thinks about what he is grateful for, says a prayer and visualizes what he wants to do for the day. Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson is known to wake up early to stay on top of his workout and diet regimen. For him, he has coffee then commits 30-50 minutes of cardio (traditional elliptical or running) after which he meal preps for the day. #3: Creativity And Problem Solving Power Are At Their Peak Early Morning We all have times when we wish we were just a tad bit more creative than we currently are; times when we need an out of the box solution to fix a mind boggling problem; times when we need to come up with something totally unique to skyrocket our success. Well, turns out, waking up early regularly can help you do that. Think of how you normally utilize your time once the clock strikes 10pm. Do you work diligently at your 100% capacity with little to no distractions? Well, most probably not because that's when you would want to unwind and cool down. The later hours of the day are never really spent productively and that's okay because that's how you are meant to relax. It is the earlier hours of the day that you need to spend productively and it is exactly working in those hours that can help you become creative. When you wake up at 5:30am, you feel fresh, motivated and are brimming with energy. It is when your mind works at its optimal level and when it works best. It is also when creative juices flow! It doesn't matter what you do; as long as it involves problem solving or creativity, early morning are best times to engage in such activities. So if you want to write a novel, paint a masterpiece or compose a bestselling song or work on a prototype, the best times for these things is not when you are already tired and trying to beat deadlines; the best time is when your mind is fresh and full of energy. #4: Mornings Tend To Be Distractions-Free Many of us struggle with getting stuff done because we are surrounded by all manner of distractions. Think about it; at our places of work (even if we work from home), distractions may come from colleagues, relatives, children or friends, social media, phone calls that last unnecessarily long, TV or radio etc. While these may be hard to keep off during the day, they are unlikely to pose any real threat early in the morning. The reason this is so is because nobody is likely to call you for a favor at 6am in the morning and neither will you find any catchy programs on TV then. You are also unlikely to wake up that early in the morning to chat someone on social media or to talk to your partner when you wanted to get some work done. Think about it; you would think you would rather have continued sleeping if all you did was not to engage in the things you would rather not do. With fewer distractions, you get more done. 5#: Mornings Are The Best Times To Stay On Top Of Your Goals We all have big dreams about our future. We even have broken some of our goals to short term and long term plans. If you don't have them in writing, now is a good time to do so because writing goals has been proven to have greater effect than having them in the mind. Since many of us are busy with other commitments during the day, committing to write down your goals early in the morning is a great place to start. And you shouldn't just stop there; morning should be the time of day when you review your goals, tweak where necessary and track your progress. More precisely, every morning, you should strive to make sure that you decide the one thing that you do to drive you closer to your short term, medium term and long term goals. Tony Robbins, The Rock, Obama and lots of other world renowned personalities spend their early mornings planning, writing and reviewing their goals and they swear by how effective this habit is in getting ahead in life. As Aristotle aptly put it: "It is well to be up before daybreak, for such habits contribute to health, wealth, and wisdom" #6: Save And Have Peace Of Mind Waking up early, especially if you have to commute to work, is the secret to having a less stressful morning. Nobody likes rush hour traffic, well of course besides those who benefit from it like Big Oil. As you are well aware, if you commute early, the traffic is lighter, you get to work a lot faster, save money on fuel (or fares) and start your day with fewer frustrations. If you arrive to work early, you could engage in your work related morning routine comfortably, without unnecessary distractions from colleagues, customers or phone calls. Getting to work late (as a result of commuting with the rush hour traffic) can get you worked up. And if you arrive to work all worked up (and late), you are unlikely to get much done and are likely to be very distracted during the day. You could avoid all that by commuting early so that you avoid any rush hour commute stress. It is even possible to ride a bike to work if you wake up early enough, something that will go a long way towards helping you to live a healthier and happier life. At your place of work, you can take the stairs (since you have the time), go to the gym and do all manner of things without being in so much hurry to get things done since you do everything you do with a purpose. Richard Whately aptly put it "Lose an hour in the morning, and you will be all day hunting for it." Conclusion Ultimately, the decision to wake up early or not is entirely yours. While you may argue that you are a night owl, the truth is that as a former night owl, I can say that 1 hour in the morning is perhaps equivalent to 3 or 4 hours at night from my experience. The explanation to this is that with mornings, you have more purpose why you are waking up. It takes a lot of will power to wake up when you could just have slept for another 1 hour. This will power feeds off itself when you wake up since you are likely to have more power to say no to distractions, get stuff done with greater precision, be more purposeful and produce better results than anything you can do when you are already tired and looking forward to sleep. Start waking up early and notice just how your life transforms in a very short period. I'll leave you with two quotes: "One key to success is to have lunch at the time of day most people have breakfast."-Robert Brault "Wake up early every day so that while others are still dreaming, you can make your dreams come true." – Hal Elrod [link] [comments] |
Im somewhat lost. Should I just focus and put all my time into programming and get good at it? Posted: 30 May 2019 01:10 PM PDT Hey! Im 17yo. Like I want to be financiallly free, to have money because most of my life I lived in a struggle and I dont like it and i dont want to live like that again. And like the only way I see is to get a degree. And I choose computer science because it seems like the only thing I like and that's well paid. Getting degree will motivate me to learn because if I dont learn im losing money and precious time. Degrees make it easier too. Like I want to learn it, make money and just leave. I want to travel, see the world, meet people that are motivated and not scared. I dont like the people I know (only my brother), I dont like my friends (no goals and they dont actually support me) nor my parents ( They are cool parents but are scared and dont let me take risks and live my life, they are over protective and want me always by their side). I also suck at every job there is if i dont like it. I would do well at programming becaus i like it, i like managing business (if its my own even more), i love those. But at other I suck. Bartender i suck because I would drop everything. Serving at restaurants. Maybe at fast food chains? Im pretty socially awkward but im trying to fix this. I also hate working for someone if its a job I hate. I hate that shit and someone pays me a shitty salary and then talk shit to me like to work faster? I hate it too. In programming this would be ok for the first years tbh. This is the reason i want to make money online, to support myself while I study at university or because I will need it. I dont know what to do. Learn more about business and try do to something online? Or just put all my time and focus on school and programming? [link] [comments] |

Newbie needing advice on approaching sponsors for event Posted: 30 May 2019 11:05 AM PDT I am an event planner for a local 2nd year bbq & steak music festival and really need some advice on getting sponsors. I've never done sponsorship coordinating before so I am learning as I go and am really struggling. I have over 200 companies on my list (some local and some national) and haven't gotten anywhere with the one's I've contacted so far. I've been cold calling, emailing, have left countless voicemails and have been following up yet I hardly ever hear back and when I do it's a decline or I get in touch with the correct person, things seem hopeful, and then they ghost me or decline….Since these methods are not working in my favor I want to try some other routes. I've read that connecting through LinkedIn is a great way to get in touch with the decision makers for companies but how do you go about starting the conversation before segwaying into mentioning the sponsorship inquiry? Also, I've been looking into SponsorPitch but am not sure if it is legit/actually works? Does anyone have any experience using it? Any advice/tips on initial contact with potential sponsors, keeping them interested, and getting them to sign the dotted line would be greatly appreciated!! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 May 2019 11:03 AM PDT So I am looking for new ways to market my products and services which in my specific industry is like trying to suck a golf ball through a garden hose but nevertheless I tread on these murky waters. So with that being said, I am always reading on different ways to get my name out there and have come across affiliate marketing. I know how it works but I have never heard anyone talk much about the subject. My question is, has anyone added this type of marketing to their business? Was it a waste of time? Or was it beneficial to your growth? [link] [comments] |
Does business partner roles affect company morale? Posted: 30 May 2019 10:35 AM PDT We are about to launch our company as an LLC out of NY and we are 4 partner with equal share (defined in partnership agreement doc). We haven't even made our first $ and the partners want to define roles for each of them (CEO,CFO,COO,CTO). I dont really care about roles because I know what each of us are doing and I'd like to see results at end of the day. So I want to shut down the idea of roles and name all of them as co-founders, like we do in our business registration with .gov sites. But they insist on fancy roles and make changes to the .gov sites and what not. Just FYI I'm not gunning for the CEO role or anything...just want to keep all things equal and run the company smooth and accountable, so our original plan of approval from all four partners to make major decisions and not CEO person making unilateral decision because of the "role". However, I'm just curious if this will affect the company morale in long run or any legal issues we might face etc... Wanted to get some input from who have this kind of experience...
