    r/Stocks Daily Discussion & Options Trading Thursday - May 30, 2019

    Posted: 30 May 2019 01:06 AM PDT

This is the daily discussion, so anything stocks related is fine, but the theme for today is on stock options, but if options aren't your thing then just ignore the theme and/or post your arguments against options here and not in the current post.

Some helpful day to day links, including news:

Required info to start understanding options:

    • Call option Investopedia video basically a call option allows you to buy 100 shares of a stock at a certain price (strike price), but without the obligation to buy
    • Put option Investopedia video a put option allows you to sell 100 shares of a stock at a certain price (strike price), but without the obligation to sell

See the following word cloud and click through for the wiki:

Call option - Put option - Exercising an option - Strike price - ITM - OTM - ATM - Long options - Short options - Combo - Debit - Credit or Premium - Covered call - Naked - Debit call spread - Credit call spread - Strangle - Iron condor - Vertical debit spreads - Iron Fly

If you have a basic question, for example "what is delta," then google "investopedia delta" and click the investopedia article on it; do this for everything until you have a more in depth question or just want to share what you learned.

Coca-Cola thinks Americans are finally ready for Coke with coffee

    Posted: 30 May 2019 11:35 AM PDT

    https://edition.cnn.com/2019/05/30/business/coke-with-coffee/index.html

In 2006, Coca-Cola launched Coca-Cola Blak, a coffee-flavored version of its signature product. People didn't like it, and the beverage flopped. Coke stopped selling the product in 2008, just two years after it launched.

Now, thanks to evolving trends and palates, the company thinks the public is ready. And Coca-Cola is bringing Blak back

Today, it's available in Australia, Italy, Spain, Thailand and Poland, among other countries. Coca-Cola is "pleased with the initial response," according to a spokesperson. It plans to make the drink available in 25 international markets by the end of the year.

Defense Spending Picks Up As Security/Threat Detection Companies Like Northrop Grumman & Others Position To Capitalize

    Posted: 30 May 2019 06:34 AM PDT

With so many national threats I feel like this is going to be more of a trending topic. Northrop seems properly positioned here. I know there are a lot of options but what do you guys think?

Original article URL: Defense Spending Picks Up As Security/Threat Detection Companies Like Northrop Grumman & Others Position To Capitalize

"Northrop Grumman Corp. (NOC) is a leader in aerospace defense contracts and development of cybersecurity. This company has the eyes of many investors thanks to a strong history of beating analyst projections. While Trump tweets and tariffs harm most companies, Northrop has shown they can move around in the hardest political environments thrown at them. While their stock has recently gotten weaker, the company may still be quite promising.

Management is focusing on aggressively raising the dividend, with a target on delivering returns to shareholders."

Survey on cognitive biases in investment

    Posted: 30 May 2019 09:17 AM PDT

    Dear Investors,

I am a second year student of finance and accounting. I kindly ask you to fill in a short, pleasant insightful questionnaire concerning emotions and cognitive errors, which we deal with in investment processes. The survey is an important part of my project concerning behavioural aspects of the decision-making process.

I apologise for any mistakes in language – I'm not an English native speaker.

The survey is fully anonymous and contains 19 simple questions and a metric.

The questionnaire takes a few minutes to complete.

What are some small companies worth keeping an eye on for long-term investments?

    Posted: 30 May 2019 11:22 AM PDT

I'm new to stocks - about 1 month in - and would love some advice. I've been keeping my eye on a few companies (e.g. a local company - VSLR - just because I have many friends that work for them, as well as some larger, better known companies) just to learn about trends and vocabulary. I haven't invested in anything yet, but when I do I'd like my investment to be about 70% long term and 30% short term. Which gets to my point - what are some small companies you'd recommend to keep an eye on for long-term investments have big gain potential? Any suggestions on short-term?

    Thanks in advance!

    TSS question

    Posted: 30 May 2019 02:31 PM PDT

Now that Global Payments has agreed to acquire Total Systems for 21.5B what can acutally happen to the stock price? Today it was up 4% for a market value of 21.76B. Can the purchase price be adjusted although it has already been set? Can it go higher but not much lower? I have quite a bit of TSS stock in my 401k becuase I know their business and believe they will continue to be a money making machine, but I am uncertain to continue purchasing stock until their stock levels out. I am not exactly sure how mergers work once they are announce until the deal completes (4th qtr)

Any recommendations for online courses in investment and trading for beginners?

    Posted: 30 May 2019 10:04 AM PDT

I am very new to investing and trading. I know some basics but would really like a course that could help me better understand basics like stock jargon, analysis, and strategy. I am willing to pay for this information and would feel better that I am taking a course that is worth my time if I had to pay for it. Free courses strike me as just advertisements for brokerages and I would imagine don't provide much in the way of actual education. I would also consider taking non-matriculated college level courses, but would like to know what subject matter to begin with. Thank you ahead of time for your suggestions!

Can I invest into whole pharma market by buying 1 stock from each pharma company?

    Posted: 30 May 2019 01:06 PM PDT

Can I invest into an industry as a whole by buying same number of stocks of each company in such an industry? Could one assume, that if one company looses market-share, different company gains it, and therfore one still makes the same amount of money?

Of course, if one invests into whole combustion engine industry, it won't work that way, because electromobiles would suck the market-share away. But if one considers pharma industry, there is no real alternative to medicine and the only real threat is severe financial crisis. Oh yeah, and anti-vaxxers :).

    Broker alternative to IB?

    Posted: 30 May 2019 10:39 AM PDT

While I loved the scenario analysis tools / autohedge and low margin rates of IB, their TWS platform stopped being able to login for me. I've tried everything and it just refuses to work now; reinstall didn't fix, etc. Their support is also terrible. I was able to liquidate using the web platform but that offers no real analytics. I'm looking to trade elsewhere. I need option/position scenario analysis tools. I only buy options to hedge a long position; I don't regularly trade them. Option visualization is a plus.

Twilio stock slips on secondary offering announcement

    Posted: 29 May 2019 11:00 PM PDT

    https://www.marketwatch.com/story/twilio-stock-slips-on-secondary-offering-announcement-2019-05-29

Just bought few hundred stocks one minute before close yesterday for a quick swing trade on todays open - and then the announcement came minutes after the close - so I guess the swing trade is not gonna happen :)

What you guys think would be the best course of action - especially in the current turbulent environment? Should I wait it out, try to average down or just take a loss? Also they have an investor conference 5th and 6th so maybe it will pump the stock a bit then (unless we fall off a cliff by then)...
