Any tips for dealing with angry customers in claims?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 03:23 PM PDT

As a newbie to the industry, I'm nervous of my ability to deescalate angry claims customers. I've been in retail before - angry/entitled customers are one thing; people who are angry because their very valuable piece of property just got damaged and they have no idea as to what their deductible is, etc are another. Any tips?

Why is it so difficult to cancel car insurance renewals (UK)

    Posted: 01 May 2019 01:26 AM PDT

I got an email last week informing me of the automatic renewal of a insurance policy I took out on a second car my girlfriend and I use for driving lessons only. She is the main driver on the policy and I am on there as a named driver.

The email gives a link to check your renewal "invitation". On the site it allows you to accept and pay quite easily. If your not happy or just don't want to renew it gives you a number to call.

I tried ringing yesterday after work while I was with my girlfriend, after listening to all the legal blurb I was put on hold for 20 minutes before I decided to leave it, to try again today.

So I rang again today to cancel while on my own, Another 5 minutes of bullshit to listen through to finally speak to an adviser, Told them I wanted to cancel renewal and then they asked me all the security questions to be told the main driver needs to be the one to cancel. I tried telling them my call was out of courtesy as they no longer have my current card details on file and will be unable to take payment. They replied that after 14 days of none payment the policy will be automatically cancelled and I will have to pay a £45 cancellation fee. WHY? When i'm telling you right now i'm not renewing my policy!!! I reminded them they have no details to take a cancellation fee. When she started to tell me how they would enforce a payment, I'm not quite sure how they would go about it as I stopped listening when I started to see red and tell them how they make cancelling a F%$KING JOKE, and hung up.

I do regret losing my temper, Not because they don't deserve it but because now my girlfriend needs to ring back and try and cancel it herself.

Anyway I think this needs to be changed as in the last 13 years that I have been driving I've never been offered a decent renewal and have always switched to a cheaper alternative. In this case it was from £365 to £215 for the year.

    Participant accident insurance

    Posted: 01 May 2019 12:20 AM PDT

I suffered a serious injury while playing in a private recreational sports league.

After the league initially stated they did not have any insurance coverage that would apply to my situation, they back tracked and said they would cover up to $30K of my bills (including the $1000 deductible). It was surprising on one level since these type of entities typically indemnify themselves. That said, I am confident that they bear some responsibility for what happened ( say perhaps the use of unsanctioned equipment) and hence the desire to get their insurance company involved.

I understand the insurer wants to pay the costs after my insurance kicks in (in fact expressly states as much in the policy brochure) but am I legally compelled to disclose all insurance coverage? And if not, how do I complete the necessary paperwork where they state withholding info is illegal? Additionally, I have a very high premium i pay for my health insurance and it seems like they get off easy because of the elevated amount I pay out of each of my paycheck.

It seems like if I don't want to fill out their forms, my only recourse left is to sue.

I need to get an homeowners insurance quote for closing. What major items contribute to the cost of policy?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 11:33 PM PDT

I got a few online insurance quotes, and one thru a state farm agency in the town I am purchasing home. I found a 200/300 dollar difference for the same coverages between online quotes and in person quotes. The home was built in 1870 and plumbing and electrical have all been updated. My credit score is in the low 620's. The home is 1500 SF. Is either one or both a factor for the price difference? Or is it something else. My lender says it should be about 600 a year. I have to get 100% replacement and use an A rated company. I want to use my auto insurer, but would like some information before contacting them. ( I did an online quote, but I have to call them for an actual quote)

Is my car going to be written off?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 10:39 PM PDT

I got into a car accident yesterday, and the front passenger side wing had been ripped off however the wheel and engine have remained intact as far as I can tell. My car is a Chevrolet Matiz valued at £850. I'm concerned that even though the damage isn't too bad and looks to be mostly bodywork, the repairs company will write my car off. I read somewhere yesterday that if the repairs on a car cost 50% or more than the cars value then they will write it off and I'm not sure how true it is. If it helps, I'm insured with Direct Line (UK). I'm an 18 year old student who lives in a really rural area and as such need a car to get around and stuff since the public transport where I live is so bad.

    SR-22 advice needed

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 10:22 PM PDT

    xposted on r/dui

I have a couple of questions regarding the DMV/SR-22/insurance situation in L.A.

Most of what I've read online advises to not request the SR-22 from my current car insurance (USAA), so as to not alert them to a conviction and have them increase my rates by exponential amounts. I've called about a dozen different car insurance companies for quotes and several agents gave that same advice as well.

I currently pay ~$1600/year for full coverage through USAA. A supplemental policy for the SR-22 would range from $600-750/year for 3 years and a completely new policy with the SR-22 elsewhere would be $6000/year or more for 3 years. Also, I've seen some things about motorcycle SR-22 insurance potentially being a cheaper route, but I'm not sure if that's because they already owned a bike or not. Below is what I'm considering - any input or personal experience would be greatly appreciated!

    Should I:

    a) Keep my full coverage policy with USAA and add a bare bones supplemental SR-22 policy with another company to meet the state's requirement? ( $1600 + ~$675) (1 YEAR for $2275 / 3 YEARS for $6825)

    b) Keep my full coverage policy with USAA for my car, purchase an inexpensive motorcycle/scooter and apply a cheap liability/SR-22 policy to it? This way being out that amount of money wouldn't hurt as bad and I could potentially recoup some of my loss by selling the bike once the SR-22 requirement is lifted in 3 years. Note: I've never owned a motorcycle/scooter, don't have a motorcycle license and I'm not really planning to ride so coverage isn't an issue.

    c) Bite the bullet and let USAA rip me a new asshole with super high premiums?

Unable to find comparable older auto (low miles), had to resort to "dealer cold calls"?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 10:17 PM PDT

So as per my previous post here, I had a 1997 Honda Accord V6 with 32k miles in basically mint shape (previously grandma's car), all service records (dealership serviced), only flaw was a bit of paint fade.

Other party's insurance has taken responsibility for the total (had a year-old SUV so good coverage thankfully), because I am in Washington State they said the normal process to to find ads nearby for "comparable cars". Has to match same year, or 1 year newer. Same make/model. Mileage and options are less stringent.

Obviously I told them to expand the search, but in the whole USA I am unable to find comps even close. Basically they found a bunch of beat up Accords with 80k-150k miles and of course they want to use those. There were a couple private seller Craiglist ads for cars just a year or two off the mark around the $6500 range but they sold quickly before I could send them to the adjuster. I found a dealership with an even older Honda Accord nearly same miles for $7500. Some small mom & pop dealerships want basically $5k for 70k (>200%) miles same make/model/year.

Essentially it seems to me its pretty obvious this car is irreplaceable, and even inferior comps are $5k minimum.

So they said another option allowed in WA state is to "cold call" dealerships and ask them what they would ask for the same make/model/year/miles on their lot, and use that number.

I told them to go ahead and get that process started, but I have no idea how it will turn out. Any suggestions/ideas/thoughts? It seems to me with the immaculate records and history of the vehicle (serviced at the same dealership its whole life) that ought to count for something.

I know they will continue to lowball (thats the whole job after all), but do you experts here have any suggestions here on what I can do to help this along? TIA!

I'm currently a mechanic looking into becoming an auto claims adjuster and looking for some input from people in this field

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 11:18 AM PDT

So I've been a mechanic for nearly a decade and while I love working on cars it's no longer paying the bills. Even though repair costs and technology have grown exponentially in the past few decades, none of that has trickled down to the techs; average tech pay hasn't seen an increase in 25 years. So I started looking into becoming an auto adjuster since I have a ton of experience/knowledge on parts and what's necessary for repairs. I have done some paint and body (helped paint a few cars in my friend's garage), so I know enough of the processes and paint codes/matching, etc, but I'm also assuming I'll need to learn more. I live in Oklahoma and went to the OID website, found the tests, as well as some study guides for the certification test including using the Xactimate software.

So my biggest questions at this point are more about the industry and what I can expect. Would I be given a desk/customer role to start and have to work up to becoming an adjuster who actually inspects the vehicle and writes claims? Are there any additional things I can do to move straight to that position? If not, how long can I expect to be in a lower role? Do they have separate jobs for the person who handles claim filing, vehicle inspection, writing the estimates, negotiations with the customer, etc? What pay can I expect at any of those positions?

Hit and run - got the license plate, but insurance is denying liability. Any advice?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 09:01 PM PDT

A car hit the backside of my car as we were both turning left (2 left turn lanes, and they turned too wide so they entered my lane). They then yelled at me that it was my fault, and didn't stop to share info. I got their license plate, filed a police report and let my insurance know. When they got in contact with the driver, they claimed that I hit them and left, so their insurance is rejecting any liability. Now my insurance is saying my only option is to pay my deductible and take the claim on my insurance since it's a he said she said. Is there anything else I can do? Is small claims worth it?

COBRA confuses the hell out of me. I need someone to ELI5

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 08:42 PM PDT

So I'm leaving my job this week and my new job has a healthcare enrollment option in 90 days.

How do i utilize COBRA? Is the following accurate?:

I don't need to do anything unless I need to utilize my insurance at some point within the 90 days - after which I will have to pay both my employer's and my own portion of the insurance for all 90 days.

So nothing to do? I can just call my HR and let them know I want to utilize COBRA after the fact if i find that I need it? Otherwise, nada?

How does this play out with being fined for not having insurance?

    Thank you ALL

Will a lender know if I dont have car insurance?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 08:06 PM PDT

    Hey all,

I have an auto loan with a bank that requires I have full coverage insurance. However I'm currently in the military and stationed on the other side of the country from my car and will be for the next few months. My car insurance policy is set to expire on 6/20 and because of some claims filed through them they decided not to pick me up after that. Would the bank who lent me the money be able to tell that I no longer had coverage or could I go without it and just pay the loan until I get back home to get my car?

    Thank you for responding!!

Should I file a municipal damages claim or should my insurer?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 11:15 AM PDT

A while back I dipped a wheel of my car into a collapsed storm drain, resulting in $824 worth of damage. My plan was to pursue a claim against the City. It's really time consuming but it doesn't cost me anything and has at least pretty decent odds of success.

I have one more form I need, a letter of experience from my insurance company, to submit my claim but when I talked to my insurance company they informed me they could not provide that to me until my case was closed. It is not closed because my insurance company also wishes to file a claim against the city and then pay me my deductible and maybe, I think, the remaining difference between my deductible and what they (the insurer) paid me previously.

They informed me that if I wish I can request they not file the claim and then I can do so myself. They said they should because they have lawyers, people who do this professionally, etc. I just, ya know, don't trust that my insurance company is in it for me, or that I'll be fully compensated by them. But they're also correct that I'm not a lawyer.

Should I let my insurance company file the claim or should I?

    Insurance for Independent Contractors (California)

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 06:06 PM PDT

My friend has been doing HVAC for sometime. He recently started doing Solar as well. He is having trouble finding liability insurance that covers HVAC and Solar equally. As of now most insurance companies only want to cover either HVAC or Solar fully, not both.

As you could imagine, this is stressful. Considering all the potential issues that could happen when installing Solar Systems. He is located in CA. Any information would be extremely helpful. Thank you.

What flair would fit this post?

Insurance claim for minor hit-and-run damage

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 05:46 PM PDT

I recently received some damage on my front left fender from someone hitting my car in a parking lot, liking from pulling in or out at a bad angle. There aren't any cameras in the parking lot so i'll never know who did it. I've already taken it to a body shop to see if they can buff out most of the damage, but it looks like it will need a repaint on a few panels ($2000+ of work) to look decent.

The question I have is if I make an insurance claim for this incident, will my rates go up at my current insurance provider? Will they be higher if I switch to another provider in the future?

I currently have AAA insurance in California with Comprehensive (if that is helpful information).

    Gap Coverage on Used Car

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 11:31 AM PDT

Do I need to purchase gap coverage for my (prospective) 2016 Lexus hybrid I'm in the process of purchasing? I'm putting less than 20% down. It's value is estimated at $20,700 and I'm being offered $20,600 (thru Carvana). Carvana offers a 100 Day/4,189 mile Limited Warranty and I have full coverage, or at least I will expand my coverage for this vehicle upon purchase. I've never done gap coverage but I assume the dealer's offer is going to be more expensive than my insurer's offer. General advice?

Car Insurance - my ex owns vehicle but policy in my name

My main question is, would they payout under my policy if something happened?

The title and loan are in her name but I pay her back for it. The policy is through one of the major insurance companies in my name, we just added her as a driver yesterday. We don't live at the same residence but haven't changed addresses and were never married.

    Paint chipping question

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 02:38 PM PDT

On my drivers side, it got struck by a deer about 3 years ago. The body shop I got it repaired at fixed the door and repainted it. 3 years later, the paint is starting to chip. Is this something I can go back to my insurance company about because my clear coat isn't supposed to be peeling like the way it is now. Repairs were done under my comprehensive insurance FYI.

    Parking lot accident

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 06:18 AM PDT

Yesterday my girlfriend was pulling out of a parking spot with a large truck parked on her right. She was backing out slowly because she couldn't see very well, normally in situations like this I would get out to see but we were leaving the hospital where i had a medical procedure and couldn't. When pulling out another car sped through past her, the tail of her car was poking past the parked truck at that time. She hit the side of the other car, and the car was going fast enough that it tore her bumper off. Who would be found to be at fault?

Dental cleaning denied due to frequency

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 12:52 PM PDT

I got a routine cleaning last September but it has been denied by my insurance (Edit: Guardian) because it was not 6 months after my last cleaning. My plan gives me 2 cleanings a year and I still only had 2 cleanings last year (April and Sept). I didn't really know about the 6 month stipulation and I guess neither did my dentist office since they were the ones that scheduled my appointments. At that time I called blue cross and they said the dentist would have to make an appeal which they did and it still came back as denied again.

What are my best chances at getting this resolved? Who should I ask to talk to and what should I say to try and get off the hook. I think it's BS I'm having to pay the full price of the office visit that should be covered by my plan. My employer switched carriers since then too so not sure if that complicates things.

Lowball settlement offer for concussion claim?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 12:49 PM PDT

Disclaimer: I am purposely being vague and using a throwaway account because this is an ongoing matter that involves attorneys, and that feels like the right thing to do. If you need clarification about something to give me a good answer, just ask. I'll expand on things if I can.

    Anyway:

Someone close to me was injured in a collision last year. She suffered a concussion and some soft tissue injuries, and the SUV she was driving was deemed a total loss. Her young child was in the vehicle with her at the time and was not hurt (car seat FTW). Total property damage was approximately $6,000.

The other insurance company accepted 100% fault for the accident (not a no-fault state). The claimant has hired an attorney. The claimant has health insurance and is subject to subrogation by the health insurance company. The total amount of medical bills and lost wages is approximately $16,000. This includes the amount paid by the health insurance company plus the claimant's post-insurance bills.

The insurance company recently made their first offer, approximately $25,000. The claimant feels this is a lowball offer, and I agree. I'm curious to know what r/insurance thinks and also what you all think is a fair settlement for this claim.
