r/Stocks Daily Discussion & Fundamentals Friday Apr 12, 2019 Posted: 12 Apr 2019 01:06 AM PDT This is the daily discussion, so anything stocks related is fine, but the theme for today is on fundamentals, but if fundamentals aren't your thing then just ignore the theme and/or post your arguments against fundamentals here and not in the current post. Some helpful day to day links, including news:
Most fundamentals are updated every 3 months due to the fact that corporations release earnings reports every quarter, so traders are always speculating at what those earnings will say, and investors may change the size of their holdings based on those reports. Expect a lot of volatility around earnings, but it usually doesn't matter if you're holding long term, but keep in mind the importance of earnings reports because a trend of declining earnings or a decline in some other fundamental will drive the stock down over the long term as well. See the following word cloud and click through for the wiki: If you have a basic question, for example "what is EBITDA," then google "investopedia EBITDA" and click the Investopedia article on it; do this for everything until you have a more in depth question or just want to share what you learned. Jeff Bezos: Amazon is still ‘small’—90% of US retail sales happen in brick and mortar stores Posted: 12 Apr 2019 10:18 AM PDT 'Amazon today remains a small player in global retail. We represent a low single-digit percentage of the retail market, and there are much larger retailers in every country where we operate," Bezos writes. Indeed, annual revenue at Walmart, for example, was over $500 billion in 2018, according to its annual report. [link] [comments] |

JP Morgan shares surge after bank posts record profit and revenue Posted: 12 Apr 2019 04:13 AM PDT https://www.cnbc.com/2019/04/12/jp-morgan-earnings-q1-2019.html Bank's first-quarter profit and revenue exceeded analysts' estimates on higher interest rates, and the shares surge. Profit rose 5 percent to $9.18 billion and revenue also rose 5 percent to $29.9 billion. Posted: 12 Apr 2019 07:04 AM PDT This post is purely speculative. Where do you think it will settle back down to? I'm wondering if there are any short term gains to be made before it normalizes after people stop buying into the Disney+ hype [link] [comments] |

AMD's Ryzen 5 2600 Outsells Every Other Desktop CPU As Intel Loses Market Share Posted: 11 Apr 2019 09:27 PM PDT That might sound like good news, but AMD's goal with 1st and 2nd generation Ryzen has been to boost market share and with its Pinnacle Ridge Zen+ 12nm CPUs it's certainly succeeding, with these accounting for the lion's share of sales and revenue at 7% of AMD desktop sales in March. This is in part thanks to price cuts, but they don't account for the success of the Ryzen 5 2600, which hasn't fallen much in price since its launch last year. Intel, on the other hand, has suffered from lack of supply of its 14nm CPUs, which is likely the main reason behind poor sales seeing as both the Core i9-9900K and Core i7-9700K have both received sizeable prize cuts since launch. Budget camping gear stocks or ETF Posted: 12 Apr 2019 08:33 AM PDT Can anyone name some budget camping gear stocks or ETFs that contain a range of companies that sell outdoor and camping gear? I've been researching migration patterns caused by climate change events, and I have a theory that the demand for camping gear will be correlated with the increase in migratory behavior. However, I would consider both VFC and COLM to be luxury brands in this market and I'm struggling to identify more budget based competitors. Does anyone have a pulse on this niche? An ETF would be ideal but I'd like to study some individual companies. Looking to do further DD, not pretending to be any sort of sage. [link] [comments] |
Investing short term to get dividend payment Posted: 12 Apr 2019 01:50 PM PDT T has a ex-dividend payment on 4/09 and a dividend payment on 5/1. As I understand it, If I own the stock on 4/09 I will get paid the dividend on 5/1 even if I sell it on 4/10. Am I correct in my understanding? Does anybody invest this way? Buy a bunch of stock the day before the ex-dividend payment and then sell it the day after. [link] [comments] |

Companies that work/develop GMOs? Posted: 12 Apr 2019 01:29 PM PDT Hey everyone, I'm looking for some public companies that are actively working in the GMO space. Companies that are developing new ways to genetically modify things, or actually selling patented GMOs, etc. I'd love to get into this market, but I'm having trouble even googling the right terms to find these sorts of companies. So thanks for the help, I appreciate it! [link] [comments] |
Things are looking ugly for Grubhub Posted: 12 Apr 2019 08:26 AM PDT Stock plummeted down to 64.73 today due to this. I'm worried now. Will Grubhub try to rebound eventually? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Apr 2019 11:43 AM PDT It doesn't seem that this stock could go lower, and if it does.. there isn't much more it can hold up. Anyone buying now at the low price or are most you just staying away from the stock? Interested to hear all thoughts and opinions! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Apr 2019 07:43 AM PDT With the upcoming Uber IPO, what are people's thoughts on it? Day one of an IPO almost never has anything to do with the fundamentals or evaluation, but with the hype the company. Watching Lyft's IPO, it was easy to make ~10% pretty quick. Is anyone planning on playing the first day on Uber? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 12 Apr 2019 08:22 AM PDT $1 worth of cash flows is worth LESS than $1 due to inflation (suppose the company isn't expected to earn more revenue in the future). Lets take a look at Apple ($aapl) which has a current p/e of ≈$17; you'd need to pay a "premium" of $17 for $1 worth of cash flows. Now, i could easily find a company that would take a $5 "premium" for $1 worth of cash flows, the think is that these companies aren't expected to grow as fast as Apple. In what way would i be able to implement the "premium cost" of cash flows (p/e) into the discount rate? Apples enormous p/e must surely make the company less valueable due to the "premium" i would need to pay for their cash flows. I know that the discount rate = the risk free rate (inflation) + risk premium, how would i be able to convert that $17 premium into a RISK premium? Or is it even possible in the first place? Indicator Study - SPY March 2019 Posted: 11 Apr 2019 10:38 PM PDT https://imgur.com/gallery/iZFs7Kh This analysis will use three indicators (SMA 10, MACD, SlowStochastic) on a 15-year chart with monthly candles as proposed by Phil Town. These indicators can give independent BUY/SELL signals, but we will use the three in harmony with each other for a concrete signal. It is important to note we only recognize a signal once the month has ended and the candle is completed. The SMA 10 signals are quite simple. If price action ends the month above the SMA, the security issues a BUY signal, and vice versa, if price action ends the month below the SMA, it issues a SELL signal. The MACD is fairly simple as well. When the histogram turns green, a BUY signal is issued, but when it turns red, a SELL signal is issued. The Slow Stochastic indicator can be a bit trickier to understand. A cross above 80 is always considered as a BUY signal, while a cross below 20 is always considered a SELL signal. The phantom zone is described as being between 20 and 80. When in the phantom zone, the signal takes on whatever the other two indicators issue. When all three signals issue a BUY or a SELL at the same time, we can use these signals execute trades. 2018 started off with all three indicators giving off positive BUY signals (price action above SMA, MACD = green, Slow Stochastic above phantom zone). The MACD turned red in April 2018 while price action breached the SMA multiple times from February through May. However, the price action never ENDED the month below the SMA until October 2018, issuing a SELL signal for this indicator. Since the Slow Stochastic entered the phantom zone while the SMA and MACD were at SELL, its signal changes to SELL as well. Hence, all three indicators issue a SELL as of October 2018. Price action this February ended above the SMA, issuing a BUY signal for this indicator, continuing into march. However, the MACD and Slow Stochastic still remain at SELL as of the end of March 2019. I learned to used these indicators together through Phil Town.
