    Redditors here stop doing this

    Posted: 22 Apr 2019 08:30 AM PDT

Here is a rant about common mistakes I see here. Sorry if this comes off as too abrasive.

"I dont buy XYZ stock because the single product that the company makes, out of hundred of services/products, I dont like"

Do not let your opinion on one product from a company make the decision for whether you should buy or not. I hear all the time from bad investors, "I wont buy facebook, snapchat, or Apple because I dont like their..." There is more complexity to consider to these companies. I personally do not like any of these companies as a consumer, but after reading their 10-k report (document that tells me how much debt they currently have, CEO experience, revenue they're making) I have profited by making plays with this knowledge.

"A candidate just got elected in office and they will make the markets rally/crash"

This is another bad common opinion. The market does not care who is in control of congress or the white house. Political offices have smaller influences on the stock market, with the exception of policies that would explicitly effect companies. Such as Warren calling for the break up of Google and Facebook. Better indicators before political office would be the federal reserve lowering/raising rates, US dollar strength, consumer index, etc.

"I feel like the market is too high"

Stop using your feelings, justify an opinion with evidence without using past stock prices. Do you have proof the European economy is suddenly at a higher risk of recession? Make a hypothesis. "If the Brexit vote passes, then English banks will lose revenue" Then fine evidence to support your claim.

"The weed market is going to explode!"

This is speculation. Which company is going to do well into the future? Think back to the dot com bubble, everyone said Napster was about to take off while there was a ton of speculation occurring about the internet and how revenues would be made in the future. Avoid speculation or at least realize how much risk you are taking. When you expect a stock to go up in value based on an if of an if of an if... "If marijuana is legalized and if people buy at this company and if the company becomes profitable..."

How to decide between Holding versus Taking Profits as a value investor?

    Posted: 22 Apr 2019 10:07 AM PDT

I'm struggling as an investor to find the right balance between wanting to hold a stock and taking profits.

I'm a value investor, so I don't define my success with a "near-term" outlook , as I'm usually cool with holding a position for a year or more as long as I'm confident in my due diligence. I'm also not looking to enter 100+ trades a year, partly because of commissions and partly because of tax implications (but don't know if this is a self-limiting view that only hurts me).

But there are a few market correction situations that arise when a stock I own appreciates 20% in a few weeks or a month - much faster than I anticipated it would - and my gut will usually always tell me the stock doesn't have a lot of near-term upside at that point, or perhaps that momentum could pare back.

I basically won my trade at that point, and I would need to calculate a new price target and weigh whether it's worth holding. I don't know if you call this a cognitive bias, being "lazy", or simply wanting to avoid declaring it on my taxes - but it's hard for me to pull the trigger on closing the position earlier than I anticipated.

So due to some combination of those reasons I find myself holding suboptimal positions in a case like the one above where I see less value going forward due to the recent run-up than I saw back at the time I invested.

How to better adjust this weakness in my game going forward?

    Everything is becoming expensive again

    Posted: 22 Apr 2019 02:34 AM PDT

Time to sell? Last time around November December 2018 we experienced a huge fall in market right after October's highs. I feel that same situation night repeat again. Before that it was January 2018 highs then huge fall in February 2018. Anyone else thinking along the same lines? Anyone one wanting to get in but can't find any good deals?

    Best Platform for Shorting?

So I've noticed that I am better at predicting the market in reverse and would profit more from short selling than going long. Ive been using Thinkorswim but when I'm paper trading a lot of stocks I want to short don't have available shares. Is there a better platform for short selling that usually has more available shares or is thinkorswim mostly like the others or even better?

The most common main trading strategies

    Posted: 22 Apr 2019 11:22 AM PDT

1.look for the previous day gainers and if its good news look for a breakout, if its promotion look for a short.

2.look for stocks with earnings releases and trade the surprise if the figure is not as expected.

My question is, are there any other major approaches other than the 2 I just mentioned?

    Financial reports releases

    Posted: 22 Apr 2019 09:52 AM PDT

Is the earnings report another name for the income statement? And if it is, it is reported quarterly (4 times a month) and annually in the financial section of the companies profile. And if you scan for companies with earnings released tomorrow you'll find a few companies every day you scan. My question is how is the company's financials organized annually and quarterly (which means performance released after every 3 months) when there is spontaneous earnings releases throughout the year ?
