What my idea is (I guess its really not much more than that at the moment) is to develop and offer a traditional standalone piece of software (I know pretty strange to not do a SaSS). The space I'm in is IT Security Software for IT Auditors and Security Consultants. (B2B Market). As someone in this space I know my idea would be useful as I personally see it as an issue in my own company and 20 years of experience. However, I want potential customer feedback. So, I've created a website that lists a couple different products I would like to create and have focused more detail on one them "AD Auditor". My question is: Is that enough detail to call it an MVP and solicited feedback from potential customers? (Send them to the website and ask for feedback). Any feedback would be great. Trying to make a plan to validate a SaaS idea Posted: 02 Apr 2019 05:02 PM PDT Hi everyone, in succession of my previous posts about the SaaS I am trying to validate I decided to actually sit down and make a stepped process of the actions I should take to validate as best as I can my idea before I start building an alpha version of the service. Here is what I have come up with so far. So far I have made a landing page with the proposed features and three price plans that asks the user to sign up and logs his plan selection. I haven't got any subscriptions yet but I got some valuable feedback that essentially said that the page is not clear enough as to what the service is doing and how it's solving the problem it is. So I decided to go back a step and I am currently refactoring it into a single landing page with subscriptions to an alpha version with the promise to be part of the creation of the service. So in a nutshell...I created a mental health app that got some good feedback but I honestly need help/a team to take this to the next stage. Literally a one-person team here. How did you guys go about sourcing a team/other people to jump aboard something that interested them? I know some people just post an idea and want others to make it happen for them - this isn't that kinda post. I already started to make it happen and I put my time and money where my mouth is. Is it bad that I'm already questioning my partner's commitment this early into the startup? Posted: 02 Apr 2019 10:01 PM PDT TL;DR at the end I had an idea a month ago for a startup related to the sports industry. My friend and I are both very passionate about sports and he's fairly smart so I just talked to him about it and about the idea of turning it into a business. He was instantly into it, and later that day we developed a very long plan to how we would execute it, from building the brand, gaining users, marketing, getting funding. Now, we're both still students and don't have any startup experience, so this will also be a big learning curve for the both of us. We have a shared calendar set up where we put in all tasks and deadline we would like to accomplish. The only problem right now is that we live in different cities, because I have an internship a few hours away. I am expected to go back end of April though, so not a big deal. However, for the last month or so, I've been repeatedly trying to schedule phone/skype conversations with him where we could discuss certain aspects of the business, as well as work on some tasks that require both of our input. Now due to work and school, I only try to have no more than two of these per week, and 1 in person meeting on weekends (I go back on weekends). Initially, he always agrees. The first week where we got this set up, he already cancels one of the meetings without rescheduling, whatever I say, it's not like we have too much work to do. Last week, same thing. He's going to watch hockey game on Tuesday with his dad, so cancels. Ok, no big deal. But he's going skiing on Wednesday as well. Sure, let's just work on Thursday then. I text him after I get back from my 8 hour shift asking him when he'd be free to spend a few hours. He says he's working until 8 and then he will give me a call. 8 o'clock, nothing. 9 o'clock, nothing. Only at 10pm does he finally respond and we do as much work as my tired self can do at 11pm after a full day of working. Fast forward to yesterday, we have a quick chat over text about some great ideas that we could implement and this really excites the both of us. We end up setting up some common work time for what is now today, so we can really discuss how to implement what we we're talking about. I text him at 8:30PM, asking him where he's at. He says he's out drinking with 2 friends and won't be able to work on it tonight. Mind you, he confirmed that he was going to work on this at 3PM, earlier today. At this point, I go on a little rant and I explain to him that this can't continue like this. That I shouldn't be on his tail all the time to work on this and that if he feels like this is already a hassle this early into the startup, before any of the real challenges actually come up, that it isn't for him. He tells me "we'll just do it tomorrow". Only thing is we already had something else planned for tomorrow, and this has just pushed everything over one day. He is quite stubborn too so arguing with him is just annoying because it makes him seem like he doesn't care. I tell him: "Look, just because we're friends does not mean that I'm gonna be chill with you just acting however you want whenever you want. If you aren't motivated enough to work on this then it's completely fine, just let me know so that I can find someone else. This isn't a school project, I expect you to be mature about this" He then replies that he's sorry and he really believes in the business, and that he would be working on this full-time if he wasn't in school. Then again, he cancelled to go drinking impulsively... He says that he wants to work on this and will be more proactive in the future. I have my doubts as it's already the 2nd time in just 3 weeks we have a talk like this. I'm seriously considering finding a new partner before I just get really fed up with him and let it ruin our friendship. Also, to reiterate, I'm very flexible with his schedule. However, I do think he's still immature, so he will often prioritize fun over other things. Whenever he has last minute work, a family function, or even anything that was planned in advance, I have no problem adjusting my schedule to adapt to his. Mind you, I am the one working 40 hours a week, and right now 25+ hours on the startup. It's only when things like today happen that really annoy me. I'm not sure if it's the long distance that is causing this, and maybe being together in the summer will make everything easier. Or maybe it will make it worse, who knows. TL;DR - Went into a startup with my friend. He loves the idea and is constantly reminding me about how much he wants to make this successful. However, he never puts in the physical hours and I always have to almost convince him to set up some time to work on this together. He then cancels these meetings for immature reasons, like going to hang out with friends, or going out drinking, without rescheduling, most of the time last minute. He often just says "we'll do it tomorrow" without even thinking what that implies. I then question him about his commitment, just telling him that I have no problem with him moving on if he isn't mature or motivated enough. I will start my own software company in a future but for now i want to work for an early stage startup to gain some experience especially how they run the company from managing the dev team, paying the employee, how they hire, legal stuff (my country is not the US), but it's a dev job so i know what i will learn will mostly be Product Development related stuffs. Why do startups fail? I think I am on to something here... Posted: 03 Apr 2019 12:34 AM PDT Tell me if you disagree with me here, but from a lot of the research we have done, it is starting to look like you can almost group startups as follows: 1 - Pre-product-market fit 2 - Post-product-market fit. Even though different startups have very different types of problems, the problems they share are a common thread in each of the groups they fall into. Group 1 focus is all on getting to product-market fit - problems they face prevent them from getting to their main goal. Group 2 focus is on building a sustainable scaled business - problems they face prevent them from doing just that. There are a few common problems shared by both, but the reasons they fail can often be shown in the issues that prevent them from reaching their goal in each group. Any thoughts? [link] [comments] |

I do everything for my company. I've formulated my products, I produce them by hand, I ship them, I built my website, maintain my social media account, everything. I am wanting to grow and begin hiring people to help me + outsource my production. An old friend connected me to the Direct-to-Consumer marketing agency he works for. They offered me a contract and here are the basics: - $500/month for use of their software. This enables them to plug me into their sales channels and I'm assuming pays for some of their backend work. - 25% of each sale that is closed by one of their employees goes to the marketing company. This means if someone randomly stumbles on my website but the marketing co's sales agent closes the sale they get 25% of the sale. - 50% of each sale that is generated through their marketing channels goes to the marketing company. So any sale that they've generated through their landing page/advertising etc they'll take 50% of. They'll be doing all of the marketing campaigns, landing page creation, etc. I will be responsible for production and shipment of the products. My main concern is if I am only taking home 50% of most sales I'm making, that's going to hamper the speed at which I can grow/hire someone to assist me. That's selling at wholesale prices but not in quantities that make wholesale prices almost not worth it. Also, the price point of my products are not prestige/luxury. I've kept them relatively low to make them more appealing to the average consumer. So 50% is kind of a shocking number to me. I am wanting to counteroffer on these %'s, but what is reasonable for a revenue share type situation with a marketing company? The campaigns they run won't be costing me anything, they will be generating as many sales a day as I can handle (so they say). But I am thinking 35-40% may be the highest I am willing to go on sales that they generate. Thoughts or insight from anyone in the industry? [link] [comments] |
How the name of a fabric can be a registered brand? Posted: 03 Apr 2019 12:09 AM PDT The trademark dept (Govt. of India) has asked me to change the name of Denim Over Me as "Denim" is someone's registered brand. I had no other option but to withdraw my TM. Having done that, I am looking forward to retaining a similar name, probably with a different spelling or something. Any other startups that have implemented the Spotify's revenue share model in other sectors? Posted: 03 Apr 2019 12:02 AM PDT I have been researching this business model and it's implementation whether it be a successful one or a failure. Here are some which I know of: Music: Spotify, Deezer, Tidal, Apple Music etc Courses: Lynda, Skillshare. Other: Kindle, YouTube?? Are there any other sites, apps, services where you can create content and the company pays you on revenue share basis. Key point is accessibility for content consumers, the company should offer free trial or counts free access towards payouts for content creators. Looking for a source code licensing template (for my SaaS startup) Posted: 02 Apr 2019 11:37 PM PDT My startup is licensing software from another software company -- we are going to have the rights to use the source code for the product our startup is selling. We would like to have the rights to modify and add features to the source code for our own use, and the changes would be owned by us. I would ideally like to have some clauses related to change of control if the startup is sold. I would also like to keep it as simple as possible. I am writing an MOU at this stage, but I think I should make it as formal as possible since there will be source code exchanged and that's pretty serious business. Developer left, won't return my calls and hasn't uploaded everything to GitHub...what do I do? Posted: 02 Apr 2019 08:10 AM PDT A little backstory...any help is appreciated. I know, I'm dumb for not getting this all squared away while he was still on speaking terms, but here we are. So, I'm a non-technical guy working on an idea I have. I hired a software developer to help design a cloud database for me and we have a database that's live right now and works 80% of the way I want. He informed me last week he's leaving and since then hasn't returned any calls, emails, or texts. Now I'm at a point where I'd like to have someone else come and salvage what's there to continue to build it out. Problem is, he didn't leave me (even after multiple requests) any documentation on where the code resides. I'm not going to continue hunt him down, he obviously doesn't care enough to respond, so I'm not going to waste my time. How can I find out where the code is and get it to a central repository? I'm pretty sure it's on AWS somewhere, since all of our cloud stuff is through AWS, but when I look around I can't find the code repository. Posted: 02 Apr 2019 06:28 AM PDT Hi, I m hiring a fronte'd dev for $400, but what's keeping me thinking lays in hiring a backend engineer to develop together the MVP of our food dekivery app. (Third world country, we compete with phones). So I have two candidates : 1/ Solid github contributions, 18 months of experience working at one of the brightest startup in the city. He's open to switch but his current employer pays him $900. He works at a ride-hailing srartup so he's a bit more experienced with our needs, I guess? He barely has 2 years of professional experience, but that company does hire good staff. 2/ A Not so bad github presence, 3 years of experience at an Agency, making different apps; usually nothing very close to what we want to achieve. But his current pay is only $400. So : A- What's more important for making & maintaning the MVP for 3-4 months, a back-end or a front-end engineer? Could startups get away with a good-enough engineer for the first quarter? B- Is past employer & working on same field relevant? And how do they compare with time of experience making different apps. Posted: 02 Apr 2019 03:24 PM PDT 4.5 year apprenticeship at big4 (in audit), double promoted (only 2 in whole intake did so) to Manager at the age of 23, of which I will have exactly 6 months experience in before I intend to do an MBA at, if I play my cards right, LBS. I was how valuable my combination of ACA and MBA would be in gaining a high position in a fledgling start-up, or possibly setting up on my own (I have contacts with tech heads who are looking into entrepreneurship). Is there any platform out there that would allow me to build something like this? Google custom search is the only thing I could find, but it's too text based. I see all these people saying that the idea is just 20% and execution is 80%. And yes, I see the princip that a good idea is nothing without execution, but you can't execute an idea that's not there. And yes I know that you can just open a shoe store if there is the demand for it, but that is not my goal whatsoever. Idk, it is mind boggling for me to come up with an idea. Hire dev or recruit CTO for resurrecting zombie startup? Posted: 02 Apr 2019 01:39 PM PDT I've got an opportunity to take-over a company I used to work for, but as I'm not a developer, need to make a decision to outsource development or try to recruit a CTO. All tech infrastructure is mostly in place, although the platform needs some tweaks on frontend and backend and then minimal amount of time to make sure all functioning smoothly going forward. Maybe around 20 hours to get the platform ship-shape, and perhaps 7-10 hours per week for maintenance / trouble-shooting / incremental improvements. The platform is not making any revenue currently, but with small promotional pushes gets between 1000-5000 weekly views. It's a niche site, but with some history in the space, and half-decent traction. Is it worth outsourcing, and therefore keeping full control. A dev (team) could make changes asap but means taking the hit of that recurring cost each month. A CTO could get more involved with the project, have some skin in the game (time), and will hopefully get the longer term vision. But much more difficult to find, esp. with little chance of immediate salary. ________________________________________________________________________________________ Reason for company failing was that it was very badly run, with costs (wages/office/infrastructure/travel/legal/etc.) way above sustainable rate. Posted: 02 Apr 2019 12:40 PM PDT So a quick description of what my product is: Most web or mobile apps today need a login/sign up system. Which means that once a user has signed up/logged in, the apps needs to also have a session management system. Now, there are many ways to implement a session management system, and also many services out there that one can use. But the problem is as follows: - many people don't understand security well and end up not using these services and implementing something that's actually not that secure at all. This is more of an education problem. - the services that exist today, do not provide various levels of security needs for session management. For example, a bank (extreme example) may need very high security to prevent attacks like packet sniffing, DNS poisoning, replay attacks, leaked data from database, or stolen device. Whereas, a web app that does not contain much sensitive data, may care way more about a scalable solution, and can have little less security (though I think some level of security is essential for everyone). The other problem is that many of the existing services are not open source and cause a "lock-in" to their users - maybe this is why many people choose to implement their own system? - Implementing a login/signup system is tedious and boring. There are many variations that one can want - username password, email password, email and OTP verification, mobile and OTP verification, social login.. And there are many tiny details like normalisation of email/phone number can be quite annoying. Plus there is a huge problem of fake account creation, especially in social apps - which can be tackled in various ways. But doing this is difficult, and would require lots of data to be able to do well. Given the above, I have made a product that tackles most of these issues for companies using NodeJS and react native (this can be expanded to other tech stacks). And I have also helped one company implement a custom solution for them which they are very happy with. Given how valuable they thought this service was, I'm thinking of creating a SaaS and open source product that can help anyone do these things more easily. But I don't really know how to go about finding people who might be interested in "taking a risk" on me. Plus, a lot of developers I have spoken to don't seem to care much at all about security. I need to be able to collect digital signatures that are legally binding, embedded inside my website. The website is built using simple HTML, JS and CSS. I know enough to setup API's and webhooks. I collect some information from my users, then I need them to sign a legally binding document. Ideally, the document is linked to right next to the signature box - but if you want to see it, you don't even need to open the document, just need to approve by checking off and signing. Similar to most T&C deals. I have found a many providers like HelloSign and Zoho Sign where you can connect to their API. The issue is that they are either really expensive (+$100 a month), or I can't achieve what I want above. As this is for a prototype, I want my $ burn rate as low as possible.
