I'm a tax auditor, and I'm having thyroid surgery on April 15th.

Many people have wanted to slice a tax auditor's throat on tax day. My surgeon is getting paid to do it.

Any time my very concerned manager asks me why my work is the way it is

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 10:42 AM PDT

Is it rude to come in every morning, eat a bowl of cereal at your desk, smack the spoon against your teeth, chew with your mouth open, and make slurping noises before you suck the rest of the milk down as if you were watching Saturday morning cartoons in your footie pajamas?

Or am I just judgmental? I have a coworker that does this every single morning. It's usually Cocoa Puffs btw.

    Janitor Seeking Accounting Position

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 03:44 PM PDT

I'm currently a janitor at a hospital who is almost finished with a bachelors degree in accounting. I've been wondering if there is any possibility this type of transfer (from janitor to finance department) can be done. If it is a possibility, what the best way to go about this job hunt?

Some facts that may be of interest:

    Pros

    • I've worked at this hospital for over 5 years
    • They've paid for a decent chunk of my bachelors degree through a tuition reimbursement program
    • I have a very good track record at this organization (no attendance issues, good to great performance reviews each year)
    • On track to graduate summa cum laude at my university
    • Will have 150 credit hours upon graduation in December (plan to complete CPA Exams in the year following graduation)

    Cons

    • I have 0 connections to anyone in the finance department
    • I have 0 job experience in accounting

I'm considering emailing the director of the finance department to see if any positions are available to me, but I'm unsure how to go about the whole thing. If anyone has advice for how to execute a transfer from janitor to accountant within the same organization, please let me know.

Advice needed for college student doing poor in all accounting classes

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 05:51 PM PDT

So I'm a senior in college, and I'm down to my last two semesters. Currently I'm taking a few management classes, and then income tax and audit. Throughout all the accounting classes I've taken, I've received the majority of time a C. Which obviously isn't good for an accounting major. This is especially true since I need a certain gpa to even get my accounting degree or it will be just general business. I talked to my advisor and I need to get at least a B in my next 3 accounting courses. Well I'm currently on track to get a C in tax. So I was going to drop it and try again next semester. The thing is, I do like what I'm learning, I think it's all very interesting. But I've had a really hard time translating my brain to this is just schoolwork to this is my career on the line. My grades are definitely from a lack of effort, and I know I can do better. But at the same time I don't know if I'll make it. I'll be talking to my advisor again soon to see where I should go from here. Maybe I'm just not cut out for accounting? I know this is an extremely late realization... but should I look into something else? I suppose it will depend on tax. This became more of a vent, but if anyone has advice or brutal honesty, it's appreciated.

Are students more interested in audit than tax?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 03:45 PM PDT

Where I live (Vancouver), it seems like big 4 firms desperately want more people applying to tax than audit. They do stuff like "Tax Team Meet & Greet" or "Tax info session" whereas audit is more like "just apply".

Are firms lacking in people who are interested in tax?

While progressing through my first tax class, it becomes increasingly clearer why the Tax code will never allow for flat tax or any other simplified tax structures.

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 08:27 PM PDT

Several conservative politicians, many of which Iv'e supported, have campaigned on torching the legal labyrinth that is our tax code in favor of an extremely simplified tax system. Not only are there thousands of special interest groups in all quadrants of the political plane that would make this difficult to execute on, but those with more resources would make current tax aversion efforts seem like child's play.

Form 1040. Most federal forms have been finalized by the IRS, but some tax law applicable in 2017 (commonly known as "tax extenders") is not yet applicable for 2018. With this release, calculations are prepared under the assumption that tax extenders will become law. The program will be updated when additional information is available.

Enjoy my Tax course but extremely miserable in Intermediate Accounting I

Thinking of switching out of Accounting, does it get better? I don't find it that hard although a lot of memorization, I just can't describe the feeling other than miserable, when I open my Intermediate Accounting textbook/homework I want to cry.

Junior has poor performance, no signs of improvement though he does seem to be trying. Worth informing HR that it might be best to let him go?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 10:02 AM PDT

The kid does not seem to be able to grasp stuff at all. 6 months in and he makes mostly the same mistakes as day one, maybe I'm just being a bitch lasagna.

He's a good kid who stays late but it takes him 3 hours to do stuff that the other juniors smash out in about 45 mins.

Worth letting HR and his counselling partner know that it's probably best to part ways with him or nah? I've already tried setting him objectives to help improve his job performance but it seems he's just not able to do it, simple stuff like keeping team and client up to date with work progress etc is nonexistent and had been brought up a few times already.

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 10:42 AM PDT

I guess they have a very short window to interview and hire. I was told they only received the names today and had been setting up interviews all day. Anyone who has been through this before know the interview question? He said it would only be 5-6 essay style questions to answer aloud.

I've had to become one of "Those" clients after leaving public

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 03:12 PM PDT

After three years full time in Tax at a public regional sized firm, I decided last summer it was time to do something new. I went to a manufacturing company and my old firm actually prepares our tax provision. But it's done out of a different, larger location than the one I worked out of.

We were ready to issue our F/S last Thursday when the CFO noticed a big issue related to the provision that was there the prior two years, as well as this year. So since I'm the internal tax person, they've been making me check in like every few hours the last three business days on when it will be done since it's the only thing holding up the F/S.

It makes my heart hurt so bad to do this to them on April 2nd.

Netbook value and net value in sales reports.

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 08:02 PM PDT

I have to run sales reports each month as part of my new job. I'm basically keeping track of the assets and the associated depreciation on the contracts. I'm confused on the netbook value and the net value (new to fixed assets). Can I have $0 for cost, depreciation amount, netbook value but then still have a dollar amount in net value? What about a dollar value for netbook but $0 for net value. I need an eli5.

Transferring from Special Education field to Accounting, would love some insight from those that changed careers!

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 07:33 PM PDT

    Hello Accountants of Reddit,

I'm seeking advice from anyone that previously went to school for education but changed their career to accounting. I also have a few general questions as well about the field.

I currently have a Bachelors of Arts in Special Education, I have been out of school for about 4 years working as a behavioral therapist with the autism population in the meantime. I'm honestly burnt out with the education field, tired of spending most of my salary on school items and dealing with aggressive behaviors. It is a very rewarding field but I can't see myself doing this more than a few more years. I have regrets for not going to school for accounting, I went with education because that's what my friends did and what was expected from me by my parents.

Now, I'm more than ready to go back for a second bachelors in accounting. I'm currently located in Pennsylvania near Philadelphia, some advice /questions I have are:

Would you recommend an on-campus or online program for accounting? Online would help since I need to maintain a job, but willing to sacrifice hours if needed.

If online, what programs would you recommend?

The closest 4 year uni to me that offers accounting major is West Chester University, does anyone have experience with this school?

Those that switched from education to accounting, how was the transition for you and any advice for me?

In general, is there any advice for a newb wanting to become an account?

    Thank you everyone!
