    Tell us about your startup!

/r/startups wants to hear what you're working on! Contest mode is on, so remember to select 'Show All' to see all the replies. If you don't see your post, you probably need to load more comments at the bottom. Also, all posts are sorted randomly, so the sort function doesn't seem to work.

    Weekly Feedback and Support Thread

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 04:09 AM PDT

    Create something? Let's see it!

    Feedback or Support Requester

    Please use the following format:

    URL:

    Purpose of Startup:

    Technologies Used:

    Feedback or Support Requested:

    Comments:

Post your site along with your stack and technologies used and receive feedback from the community. Please refrain from just posting a link and instead give us a bit of a background about your creation.

Feel free to request general feedback or specific feedback in a certain area like user experience, usability, design, or code review.

Feel free to request support with hiring talent, finding a job/clients, recruiting a co-founder, getting your pitch deck made, or anything objective based that is specific to your startup.

You can also receive advice and feedback in instant chat using the /r/startups discord.

    Feedback Providers

    • Please post constructive feedback. Simply saying, "That's good" or "That's bad" is useless feedback. Explain why.

    • Consider providing concrete feedback about the problem rather than the solution. Saying, "get rid of red buttons" doesn't explain the problem. Saying "your site's success message being red makes me think it's an error" provides the problem. From there, suggest solutions.

    • Be specific. Vague feedback rarely helps.

    • Again, focus on why.

    • Always be respectful

    • /r/startups would appreciate your expertise on our discord.

    Support Providers

    • Please post some background information about yourself and why you're capable of providing support

    • Feel free to share a relevant URL

    • Be extremely clear what you are offering your support in exchange for: money, equity, barter/trade of services/products, or a mix of those--or if you are volunteering your support for free

Being the sole startup owner isn't easy, but doable

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 08:17 PM PDT

Anyone else in this boat? Even though I started my side gig (Amazon profit calculator) with two other partners we decided that it would be best to go our separate ways so I own the business outright. It's NOT easy.

Since I'm the coder I was responsible for creating the web app and all of the needed bells and whistles that come with it (thankfully the public website, homepage, was outsourced using DesignCrowd so that saved me some work), while my ex-cofounders were supposed to do the marketing and product development.

Unfortunately they didn't have the time to dedicated to those tasks (hence the parting) and now I'm left with doing everything from scratch. Here are some of the things I'm responsible for

    1. Social media (managing FB, LI, YouTube)
    2. Current customer reachout
    3. Potential customer reachout
    4. Coding
    5. Testing the app
    6. Coding again
    7. Getting customer feature requests (and there're a LOT of those)
    8. Paying the bills
    9. Figuring out all the ins and outs of Amazon Seller Tools (MWS)
    10. Deep-diving into competitor
    11. Constantly re-evaluating the markets and seeing what's needed
    12. Monitoring Reddit and FB for additional feature requests
    13. Keeping track of the business documents/taxes/etc
    14. So much more

Anyone out there doing the same? It seems like anyone I talk to has a co-founder (or two). Periodically I'm thinking of getting one as well, but past experience has taught me a good lesson -- friendships don't necessarily make the best partnerships and strangers might be even worse.

Looking for ideas as to UI

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 01:47 AM PDT

Hey, I made a small project that looks at small business ( some agencies) google analytics and driving actionable ideas for optimization. Step 1 - ask permission for google analytics/search console/AdWords/FB (with like builder) etc... Then I run automatic reports (user persona, channels,LP,conversions etc) And automatically get insight (I.e users that are coming from FB into X LP are more likely to convert, increase your budget on Y campaign) or female from NYC seem to bounce more then male from NYC - try to run different LP's or message for female audience ) Currently I'm sending weekly emails . But I got few requests to use a dashboard instead. My question is what dashboard should I'll build - something like sticky notes with insights, something like trello with categories (audience, channels, trends) Or something more like a datastudio dashboard with a lot of numbers ( but sorted in a more relevant way) ? Thanks

Equity vs Royalty - Founding stage

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 12:53 PM PDT

I have been on the lookout for a technical co-founder/someone who will help creating the MVP (mobile app) for my idea.

Now what if your dev partner wants a royalty and not equity? I perfectly understand the differences between those two, but I am wondering how the royalty is typically set up. What is a typical amount and most importantly what other terms should be in place? For example until amount x is paid, or vesting as with equity to make sure that the dev will keep working on the product and not just create as a passive income?

I am thankful for all answers.

How to getting and processing users feedback?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 10:49 PM PDT

    Hi everyone!

My question is about communication with users. What best practice for getting and processing feedback, bug reports, question and comments about product? Sure, it is tons of information on the web, but I'm fail to find some kind of full tutorial about that subject.

So, I'm new in development and try to planning my brand new daily affairs manager :) it would be mobile app created with react native, web app with react and desktop with electron. I'm trying to see how much effort will be needed to take care about not only dev process, but all related area.

At this point I'm want to know how to get feedback from users which have no idea what is it GitHub and how to create an issue there. As a regular user I'm won't to fill huge form and typing more than a couple of sentences. But as developer I need a structured and detailed information about user problem or feature request.

I think that with bag report it is relatively simple. When something goes wrong user can send bugreport via email with attached logs and other required information. It something that I see in most mobile apps. Another way, maybe with better user experience, is to upload all that data to server without emails. Also I plan to use Crashlitics in order to get some stat information about performance and stability of my app.

Maybe some other ways to doing that?

Another part is a overall service feedback and getting information about possible improvements. Well again, as a regular user I hate every moment when app ask me to vote in store, but as a developer... well, you understand. Besides stores as I know don't give information about the user, so it's hard to collaborate about the issue or feature. On the other hand it is too expansive to develop some kind of inapp chat or maintaining own service for feedback processing.

Does this mean that an external paid service for such tasks would be the right choice? Just need to find the right one?

What other aspect in communications with users do you consider important?

What else needs to be considered when planning.

    Thanks in advance!

    A premium social networking site

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 10:39 PM PDT

So, as the title says, I have been thinking of a premium social networking site (with no ADs and on invite only basis). I have drawn some rough sketches but need some advice. The main idea is to give the users free access for 1-2 months, then put on a nominal membership fee (like 0.5$ a month). It will have the standard social networking features (add friend, posts and comments, messaging, photo sharing, user defined groups and pages). Is this viable in today's world from user and business standpoint? What features do you guys expect in this site. How to make it more appealing to the users? I know many people have tried something like this and failed miserably in the long run. So need to hear from you guys before i start something meaningful.

Inexperienced startup owner here. Could use some help with some specifics.

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 10:05 PM PDT

Howdy there partner. I know i'm not allowed to post my business name and not too many details here (no self promotions and what not), so I'll try to keep it simple. I recently started a social media app at my university. I'm contemplating a direction I could take the app to appeal to users more, but I don't know what "infrastructure" I would need to set up in order to implement it. I would like to partner with food outlets near my university, acquire discounts from them, and hand off the discounts to my user base.

How exactly do I do this? All of the steps. I don't want to be handed all of the answers, so if you guys could recommend resources for me to look up, that would be awesome. Where can I learn to do this stuff? Seriously, I don't even know where to begin. Thanks, fellas.

18 y/o getting their head around MVP

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 11:16 AM PDT

Non-tech-soon-to-be founder of a tech based company (web application initially). I have my vision but have a few questions regarding getting this vision down into an MVP. Firstly

Once an MVP has been created, what level of positive response would you expect before declaring the venture is viable and to go full-steam ahead?

In terms of getting an MVP (desktop application created), how much would you say to budget for this (inc. marketing)? MVP's are meant to be bare minimum, so how much would be deemed reasonable to spend on hiring a company to code it and marketing it etc.

Easier explanation in bold: The MVP requires the use of an algorithm, initially it won't be that complicated an algorithm, but I want it to achieve what is needed. How does a non-tech guy go about communicating the wishes for the outcome of the algorithm to the MVP company? Do I need to write out the exact algorithm, or can I give them the variables I would like to be used and work with their advice to do the rest? In a less consulted way: say I have 15 numbers generated, I want an algorithm to do something with these numbers to produce a specific output, do I need to give the company the outputs i expect, or will I need to go into more detail?

I will probably have about 18k to put towards this project from my personal savings, maybe more if I need to (as can raise funds from parents and others). Is this anywhere near enough? I will be going to university after this year, so won't necessarily have a solid income stream unless I can find some other form of work.

    Cannot focus on one project.

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 01:48 PM PDT

So, my problem is that I have started about 3 or 4 different projects I would like to do. The problem is that I cannot focus on single one and finish it for production. One is 99% done and I switched to something else because I needed to learn something new. So my question is, how do you guys deal with focusing and believing in one project.

I think I jump from project to project because I see to many problems on current project and I hope it won't be the case with next one or I don't believe a product is good enough in general.

How to differentiate good SEO vs a good product?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 01:11 PM PDT

I've got a product website and I'm playing around with Google Ads for SEO.

Its definitely helped drive traffic to my website, but its hard for me to judge whether people are coming to my site because they believe in my product or because the SEO is just pretty good.

Part of what I'm trying to do is determine market fit for the specific keywords I'm targeting.

What measurements can I use in Google Ads or Analytics or so on to judge the quality of my product relative to my SEO vs just knowing more people are coming to my site, and some percent are buying my product?

    Deferred payment for Freelancer

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 02:46 PM PDT

I have a decent size idea for a web project, need to bring a on a freelance developer. I have no budget for the beta version of the site, but because we both agree the idea has potential to gain investor interest and generate revenue down the road, my dev friend said he is willing to work within a deferred payment agreement at a higher than usual rate (he's not interested in equity).

Is this a good route to take? Doesn't seem like I have many other viable options. If so, what should the language for this agreement look like? Would it be based on how and when we received outside investment?

    Thanks! CBT

Advice on receiving mentorship/advice from other professionals in your market and trusting them in helping your idea...

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 01:26 PM PDT

How do you do it properly?

Just spoke to a mentor-like figure in my industry. I have much to learn about the industry from him. I asked advice on how to position my startup as a success and he asked to know more about it. I trust him. We don't sign NDA's talking about this because I am taking my own spin in the market with a different niche.

How do I gain insight from other professionals in the field?

I figure I should position myself as a student rather than an aspiring business owner in their market.

What is your experience with learning from professionals in your industry to launch a stronger startup? What do you recommend?

    Hitting a Wall... Whats next?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 11:28 AM PDT

So, I'm just about done with building the functionality of the MVP and working on making the UI more user friendly. But after that what is next? I've applied for accelerator programs like Ycombinator and like Tech Stars but feel like that shouldn't be my next step. I'm stuck trying to figure out what the next move should be. I developed a price model that will be used and a process of how the company will generate revenue. Is there any online Mentorship resource to ask advice? I would rather have a face to face meeting but recently moved to a new city(Denver) and not familiar with anyone yet.

Any advice on what I should be doing next or on getting some sort of mentor?

Why is Crypto not working as an alternative financial market?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 06:34 AM PDT

What needs to change with cryptos to make them work better?

They have dropped and become unreliable, however, fundamentally, they were a perfect solution to having an alternative to our current financial system.

In my opinion the problem is that the price fluctuates too much. So that is one option to having viable crypto.

Another reason I never got in was that my cryptos could be hacked.

Another reason is that idiot who died while locking everyone out from their accounts.

    To Sum:

I want crypto-currencies to be viable so what has to happen to make them so, in your opinion?
