Renters Insurance: ELI5 the claims process please.

    Posted: 26 Apr 2019 09:02 PM PDT

I live in an apartment building and our upstairs neighbor left his tub running which overflowed and soaked through onto our ceiling. The property maintenance crew has had to drill holes into the walls and ceilings, install dehumidifiers and large fans which make our space uninhabitable as the temperature reaches 94F+, and the noise level is incredibly loud.

We are trying to seek compensation for the cost of rent (we are staying in a hotel through temporary accommodations which is covered by my renter's insurance), our electricity bill for the month since these fans and dehumidifers probably draw a lot of energy, and the emotional stress this has caused for my wife and my 1 year old. My 1 year old is absolutely terrified of his own home now, and it upsets me to think about this. All of our belongings have been displaced and dirtied, but none damaged (yet).

I called my renter's insurance company and asked what the process was and they told me that I should file a claim with the upstairs tenant's insurance company. I had never heard of this before as I haven't actually had to deal with an insurance claims process before. I didn't know you could just file a claim with a company that you had no affiliation with.

What I'm unsure of is what exactly to ask for. Do I just tell them that I'm looking to file a claim for damage caused by the neighbor and then give them his name and insurance policy #? How can we be compensated (if at all possible) for the emotional stress and the time it will take my wife and I to clean up the mess and put our living space back together?

    Please help!

Changing insurances but still need prescription refilled

    Posted: 26 Apr 2019 10:06 PM PDT

I have a question regarding getting refills of a prescription while switching insurances. I'm getting a new job and I will have new insurance with that job, but I still have two refills for my prescription with my current insurance. My prescription requires prior authorization and took three weeks to get it approved with my current insurance and since I still have refills, I don't want to go through all of that again until I have to. Can I get the remaining refills even though I don't have the same insurance as when I got them? I got a refill today because I still have the current insurance and they didn't ask for an ID card but I don't know if they have it on file or something and if that'll update when I get off my current insurance.

Is it possible to get unwanted pregnancy child support insurance?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2019 10:31 AM PDT

Got a vasectomy because I really do not want to breed nor should I with my family's medical history.

Just had a thought that I wonder if it is an option to get a custom insurance plan for an unwanted pregnancy. In case i end up being one of the 1/2000 men who get someone pregnant with a vasectomy.

The insurance would pay for child support for an unwanted child from age 1 to 18. And would pay out provided that:

    1. I pay the premium
    2. I get yearly sperm count tests
    3. i still somehow manage to knock someone up
    4. she decides to keep it
    5. dna confirms its my child

    Car insurance problem

    Posted: 26 Apr 2019 08:36 PM PDT

Okay, so my car got in two accidents 1 month apart. The first one i hit an animal that took a bit off my bumper. Second one i hit a shopping cart due to high winds. I reported the shopping cart and also mentioned the animal one. Both accidents are damages on bumper requiring to replace it. The adjuster gave me two claims. I called and someone in usaa told me she closed the claim for the animal one. I told the dealership what happened and the situation and they only charged me for one claim. I paid one deductible and picked up my car today. I look at my usaa app and find the animal claim is still active and waiting to be scheduled for a damage inspection. Did they just screw something up or is the adjuster still wanting me to pay two deductibles?

Why do insurance companies have high turnover?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2019 01:33 PM PDT

Is it unrealistic metrics? Too much work and not enough employees? Jobs that don't fit the persons personality?

Why are insurance jobs, especially in the call center, go through a carousel of hiring?

    Auto/Home Insurance

    Posted: 26 Apr 2019 02:35 PM PDT

Sorry if this had been asked before, I didn't see it in my searches. I'm in the process of moving my auto and home insurance (auto + home renewal went up 21% this year, after home went up 15% last year, and we had no claims/tickets/changes, but that's another story). My question is regarding the new coverage - is a higher liability limit and adding an umbrella policy necessary? We've always held 100k/300k. The new agent we're talking to quoted a couple options - the 100k/300k liability limits and a 250k/500k plus 1M umbrella. I feel like this is overkill, but I'm also not extremely educated on the subject. I'm also always a little leary when a sales person is pushing the bigger product. Any opinions appreciated! Thanks.

    Needing clarity regarding insurance policy.

    Posted: 26 Apr 2019 03:58 PM PDT

I'm looking into getting insurance for my cat. Currently, I'm torn between maximum benefit and lifetime. My understanding is that the maximum benefit policies cover for each illness upto your upper limit - i.e. 8k for diabetes, 8k for surgery etc. as an example. Lifetime policies have a total amount that EVERYTHING goes under - 8k for diabetes, 8k for surgery - the policy would fund the 2k to take it to 10k, the upper limit, and I would pay the remaining balance.

Any ideas if that is correct? Which would be the better policy? If I go for maximum benefit and he develops a long-term condition, I run the risk of not being able to insure with lifetime cover in the future as it would be classed as a pre-existing illness. I'm so torn!

What qualifies me for renters insurance?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2019 07:08 PM PDT

I'm living on my in-laws property right now. We do not pay them any rent. I was wondering if I could purchase renters insurance, or if it was just for people that are 'legally' renting. I've heard that renters insurance is really cheap and everyone should have it.

I don't live in their house, but in a house on their property that we fixed up.

I need help sorting out applying for Medicaid with my unique situation.

    Posted: 26 Apr 2019 03:14 PM PDT

I need some help and advice in regards to applying for Medicaid.

I'm a 23 year old college student. My father lost his job and as of the end of the month, I will not have health insurance. My parents' insurance broker told them that I can't be a part of their Medicaid plan because I am not a dependent on their taxes, and I have a different address.

On May 20th, I'm starting an internship that pays $27/hr this summer for 12 weeks. They do not offer insurance to interns. I'm afraid that if I apply for Medicaid, I will be immediately bumped off because of my income, even though it is only temporary.

I live in an off campus apartment with three other students. My permanent address is with my grandparents, both seniors on Medicare collecting social security.

Does anyone have any advice as to what I can do? I take several life-saving medications that I can't go without.

Help with some concerns of my first claim please

    Posted: 26 Apr 2019 05:46 PM PDT

Im on mobile so sorry for format.

Someone backed into my car today in a parking lot and didn't leave a note, it's a newer model Honda accord. There's damage to the front passenger panel and paint has been scratched off on part of the bumper. It's my first new car and I really want it to be fixed so that it looks like nothing happened. I'm not asking to catch that person or anything, my deductible is only $500 and I'll take that loss.

I guess my concerns are that the insurance company will do the absolute basic repairs and won't care what the final product actually looks like. Will my panel and bumper be fixed and/or replaced close to perfect? I'm probably being dramatic but this is the biggest purchase I've made in my life and I want it to look great for awhile. At least until I scratch it my damn self.

I'm in Florida and I have Geico full coverage, they've set me up with one of the best paint and body shops in my area.

Thank you in advance for any info, I really appreciate it.

    Potentially Vacant?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2019 05:10 PM PDT

My wife and I are currently living at my in-laws home, and just purchased a home less than a mile away. We don't have much furniture and my wife wants to wait to move in until we've fully furnished (which could take 2-3 months). Our home insurance provider doesn't cover vacant property and has told us we will need to cancel our plan when I inquired about getting a vacancy provision added on. They're going to cancel us in about a month.

Now we're in a bit of a pickle - do we

    a) Cancel our current plan, and find a new insurer that covers vacancy?

    b) Move in some things and furnish proof that we're in the home, and live in the home some odd number of days per month? (does this mean it's not vacant?)

Our policy documents are not clear about what constitutes vacancy, and speaking to underwriters via telephone has not gotten me very far. Is there some sort of universal definition of vacancy?

Located in NC, if that helps.

Auto Total Loss Valuation Dispute - CCC One - California

    Posted: 26 Apr 2019 03:53 PM PDT

    Hi all,

Hoping to get some insurance adjuster (or other) opinions on an open claim I have going.

In March 2019 I was involved in an at fault solo vehicle accident which resulted in CSAA (AAA) totaling my 2008 Nissan Frontier King Cab (2 door) 4x4, 6-speed manual with 150k miles. I've been upfront with the adjuster from the beginning about what I want. I've done enough research now that I think I know the market well. $10,500 is my number, anything less and I'm going to feel cheated. My argument is that the 6-speed manual 4x4 combination is rare and rather than being a detractor, actually makes it a more desirable truck and therefore worth more. I've been a AAA customer for 10 years, this is my first claim.

It's been almost 2 months, 47 emails, many phone calls with the adjuster and at least 4 revised CCC One valuation reports. The initial report started with a valuation of $8200, MANY fixed issues with their comps later I'm up to $9500 but I still don't feel it reflects true market/replacement value of my truck. So we're arguing over $1k. Not a ton of money, but not chump change.

One of the issues they fixed was removing a comp where I caught them blatantly in a lie. They had a 6-speed manual truck on the report with a (low low) asking price of $8995. When I ran the carfax on the VIN (my buddy has a carfax account) it came back with frame damage. Their comp truck was a salvage and therefore not comparable. On top of that, I googled the VIN, found the listing and the dealer was asking $9985, not the $8995 on my report. And the truck is TRASHED. Wrinkled hood, ripped seats, shot tires, etc. Not representative of the loss vehicle at all (my truck was immaculate for 150k miles and they agreed, gave it a good condition rating, no complaints there.) They removed the crappy comp but it made me question how much I should trust the report. It could have been an honest mistake, those happen. But it was a $1,000 mistake and not in my favor.

The last CCC report they gave me had the following comps:

Comp 1: 4 door automatic, 142k miles, adjusted valuation $8310

Comp 2: King Cab, 6 speed, 135k miles, adjusted valuation $9700 <== I found this comp and had them add it

Comp 3: 4 door automatic, 136k miles, adjusted valuation $9000

Comp 2 (best so far) has issues too. The dealer is asking $10,495. I looked up the carfax and it came back with accidents reported. The CCC report lists it as a 5-speed manual (impossible, the 6 cyl truck never came with a 5-speed manual, only a 6-speed) and they list a navigation system which is not listed in any of the online ads and isn't visible in any of the interior photos. CCC/CSAA has refused to amend the report after I pointed out these discrepancies.

In the meantime, I found another 6-speed manual comp, it's a 4 door but is in market, 128k miles, asking price was $12,995. The listing disappeared so I called the dealer and the sales guy told me it sold last Saturday (4/20) for asking price. I've asked 4 times in the past month to have this comp added to my report and the adjuster has either ignored me or flat out refused.

Additionally, the report has different mileage adjustment rates for each vehicle (.$ deducted/mile). The difference between the lowest rate ($.024/mile) and highest rate ($.04/mile) is 40%. When I asked my adjuster to explain how they calculate the mileage deduction I was told "It's a proprietary algorithm." To me, this should be simple math and should be consistent between "comparable" vehicles. This results in a $300 hit to my best comp (2) that they cannot explain.

My request to them is simple: Strike Comps 1 and 3 (the 4 door automatics) from the report, add my 4 door 6 speed comp , fix the demonstrable issues with comp 2 and explain the mileage deduction discrepancies. CA law (Section 2695.8) states " when comparable automobiles are available or were available in the local market area in the last 90 days, the average cost of two or more such comparable automobiles..." - So they need a minimum of two comps. Also, comp 1 has a "reporting date" of 1/31/2019. Section 2695.8 states "A comparable automobile must have been available for retail purchase by the general public in the local market area within ninety (90) calendar days of the final settlement offer." So if they do give me another offer, by my reading of the law they CANNOT use Comp 1 as of 5/1/19.

The adjuster refused and sent this message: "At this point, we are at an impasse. I am going to move forward with payment of the undisputed amount (owner retain salvage) and note the file. If you want to speak to my supervisor, XXXXXX, can be reached at XXXXXX."

I asked for the managers email, added him to the thread (now 45 emails long) and received the following response:

"I have reviewed your claim and confirmed we have offered a fair and reasonable settlement of your 2008 Nissan Frontier SE King Cab. If you want to contest the value, you can invoke the Appraisal Clause per your policy. XXXXX has previously apprised you of your rights under this provision.

XXXXX has issued an owner retain settlement of $7,264.26 on April 24, 2019. The 2008 Nissan Frontier is yours to pick it up. You are responsible for handling of salvage and any liabilities associated with it as you are the legal owner. CSAA IG will relinquish its interest in the 2008 Nissan Frontier. However, if you want to reassign ownership of your auto to CSAA IG, please advise XXXXX as such so we can issue an additional payment of $2,251.87 to you and send necessary title transfer paperwork for completion."

This seems like a strong arm tactic. So I called the CA Department of Insurance hotline to ask advice. Mainly, can the insurance company unilaterally issue a settlement without my approval? It seems that if they could, they would have done that with the first low ball $8200 offer and avoided the trouble (and cost) of negotiating with me, fixing comps, etc. The (very) helpful individual at DOI said no, they cannot issue a settlement without my approval and that I should open a case with the DOI, so that's what I did.

My last email to the manager (immediately after his FU email to me) "Please note, I have not agreed to any settlement due to demonstrable issues with the valuation report outlined in the previous emails. Thanks, XXXX"

    PHEW!

    Questions for all of you:

1). Can the insurance company issue an owner retained settlement unilaterally without me agreeing to it?

2). What do you think will happen next?

3). Will I have any luck the DOI claim?

4). Is my request to have them strike the two less applicable comps and add the more appropriate comp reasonable?

5). Have they (CSAA/CCC) violated any laws? Or are they simply being incompetent and/or dishonest?

Thanks, all for listening/commenting. This has been a terribly disappointing experience and I strongly encourage anyone who is considering AAA or currently has AAA insurance to take my experience into consideration. Personally, I'd say avoid them or any insurance company that uses CCC One for valuation like the plague.

I hope this helps out some other folks facing a similar situation. Oh and if you want to have fun, google "CCC One Lawsuit" :) Cheers, all.

Applying with the state of Ohio for my license

    Posted: 26 Apr 2019 03:27 PM PDT

I passed my life and health exam and just need to apply with the state to get licensed. Only thing is I have an ovi and 3 counts of receiving stolen property. (Misdemeanors)

I was told the department of insurance takes things on a case to case basis. I'm worried I will get denied.

My lawyer worked out a deal with prosecutor that the stolen property charges would be expunged, but I'd have to do 1 year of probation again. Which doesn't make sense bc I was already convicted and served a year on probation already without any issues. I got a job lined up with a great mutual company... they just want me to get approved by the state first.

I really don't want to be on probation again, if I apply with state and just leave the stolen property charges on my record, do you think I would get approved?

I know I should just go through another year of probation. charges would be off my record immediately after my court date. then I would serve the 1 year probation.

Think I'd get approved if I just apply without expungement?

Hello guys, question about PIP against liability coverage for medicals -- TX Loss

    Posted: 26 Apr 2019 02:23 PM PDT

My mother and father were rear ended. Adverse has accepted 100% liability. This was a hard impact all vehicles are total losses. Both my mother and father went to hospital via EMS from the scene. Dad ER bill is around $18k and my mother's $8k. Should we submit ER bills to liability carrier and use our PIP ($2.5k limits/person) for EMS, Radiology and Phys? Or what and why would be our best course of action. We are wanting to negotiate with insurance directly since they've been kind and relatable thru the process so far; plus I hate those attorney commercials haha.

If I am missing something or negotiations tactics I should know would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance guys!!

Getting frustrated with my auto insurance claim (State Farm)

    Posted: 26 Apr 2019 11:21 AM PDT

3 weeks ago I was in an accident that was my fault. I reported the claim to my insurance immediately on 4/4.

It took 2 weeks to get an estimate and then State Farm determined my car was totaled. Last Thursday I accepted their settlement offer and the rep I spoke to said the next step was to get some letter or something from the bank I had my car financed through (Chase). Something about transferring the title. She told me it would take 24-48 hours and then they would make the payment to Chase.

By Tuesday nothing had happened so I called State Farm again and then that rep told me it would take 3-5 business days from the day they requested this letter from chase. He told me if nothing happened by Wednesday or Thursday to give them a call back again.

Well it's now Friday and still nothing and I am really frustrated. I'm mostly frustrated because I don't understand what's going on and the time frame keeps changing. I called State Farm again today and this rep tells me that since I was slightly upside down in my loan, it can take even longer than the 3-5 business days I was told. She said she would call chase and follow up with them.

I called chase and wasn't sure who to speak to or what to ask really but they eventually transferred me to a guy in the auto loans department and I explained to him that State Farm keeps telling me they are waiting on chase and that I'm going car shopping this weekend so I really hope that things can get straightened out so I can get a new car. The dealership told me I just need the payout letter from State Farm - I told this chase guy that and he said it could take 7-10 business days for the transaction to happen between chase and State Farm and for me to get that letter. He was really rushing through the conversation and I felt like he was mostly trying to get me off the phone.

All I want to do is move on and get another car. I've been upset about the whole thing because I loved that car (Dodge Challenger, my dream car) and I feel like I just have no idea what's going on. Am I being unreasonable? Everyone that I've talked to about this has had stories of how they were in an accident and xyz insurance took care of it the next day. It's been 3 weeks.

EDIT: Apologies- just got home from (successful) car shopping. Thank you so much everyone for the feedback, sounds to me like I just need to chillax and let them do their thing. Appreciate the help!

Does this car insurance deal sound shady or legitimate?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2019 10:36 AM PDT

I got an online quote from Progressive for car insurance. it said that my first six months would cost me like $150, but after that it would go down to around $60. I am willing to pay more upfront if it means I will save in the long run, but I am concerned they will come up with some bs excuse to not fallow through with their end of the bargain. I haven't heard of insurance companies doing this sort of thing so I am a little suspicious. does this sound legitimate or is it a scam?

To claim or not to claim

    Posted: 26 Apr 2019 08:42 AM PDT

I got an estimate of $2700 to fix it. However, I don't have that money available. Roughly how much would my insurance premiums be affected if I were to make a claim? I have a $500 deductible.

Question about the Retained Limit in a Commercial Umbrella Liability Policy

    Posted: 26 Apr 2019 07:24 AM PDT

I'm just a little bit confused about the retained limit. Let's say there is a $10,000 retained limit. I know that the self-insured retention is not a deductable. So in the case that the underlying policies are exhausted would the insured pay for any losses below $10,000? if a loss happens to be $10,001 would the umbrella pick up the loss? Is the retained limit per occurrence or an aggregate limit? is the Self-insured retention optional when once claim arrives?

Just needing some quick clarification for how it works

Progressive or Geico Claims Adjuster Trainee positions advice.

    Posted: 26 Apr 2019 07:23 AM PDT

Hi Everyone, as that title states, I am looking for some advice from those that have experience working for either agency or are in close contact with Progressive and Geico employees. I did search the sub and this exact topic was discussed but that as around 2 years ago, some information may not be relevant anymore.

So here is my situation, I applied to both Geico and Progressive for the Claims Adjuster Trainee position and have gone through several phases of the interview process. Progress called me back yesterday to inform me they want to offer me the position, amazing news! right? but.... I have the role play assessment coming up next week for Geico. I still plan on attending the Geico role play assessment because.... why not? I'd feel better potentially having two offers than just one.

Before I make any decisions, I wanted to ask others what their experience is, and tips, advice, insight and feedback as I want to be as informed as possible before making my next move. I appreciate any and all feedback I may get, thank you!
