Not quite finance but will cost you money if you fall for it - beware Verizon Wireless scam Posted: 23 Apr 2019 12:39 PM PDT I was just called on my Verizon Wireless cell phone, the caller ID showed up as "Voicemail" - I thought, that's odd. I usually don't answer calls if I don't know the person, but I answered this one. Immediately a robot starts talking saying it is Verizon and fraud has been detected on my account, press 1 to deactivate your account or press 2 to speak to a customer service rep. So I press 2 and a woman is on the other line saying she works at Verizon Wirelss and fraudulent activity may have been found on my account. She asks me if I ordered an Iphone XS to North Caroline. I live in New Jersey so I said no I did not. She asks me if I know a certain persons name and address, again I say I don't know that person or address. She says ok there has been fraud on your account, we're going to lock it down and take care of that for you, for your security we are going to send you a number through text, when you get that please read it back to me. The text comes and it says something to the effect of: "Below is your temporary password. Please remember Verizon will never contact you to ask for this number. 23482349 (bunch of random numbers)" Thankfully I read the full text. I said to the woman "It says here Verizon will never contact me to ask for this number." She doesn't miss a beat and responds with "Yes we will only ask for that number when we call you before hand and tell you what we are doing, that is to prevent any scammers from getting their hands on it." So I responded "Like you?" She continued to go on saying how she works at Verizon and needs the number to prevent this fraud right away. I then hung up on her and called Verizon with the number from their website just to be sure there was no fraud, and of course there wasn't. What these people did is they went to VerizonWireless.com and entered my phone number into the username/password login form. You can login with your number on vzw. So they put in my number and click forgot password, which resets your password and texts you a new one. If I had given that number that was texted to me to this woman she would have then been able to reset my account password to whatever she wanted and I wouldn't have been able to get back into my account. She could have ordered herself whatever she wanted from within my account. So please beware, if someone calls you from a company and says there is fraud hang up on them immediately and call the company from a number on their website. It will cost you only about 30 seconds and save you a ton of trouble! [link] [comments] |
United Airlines not honoring their agreement for flight cancellation. Posted: 23 Apr 2019 03:50 AM PDT Was on a canceled United flight from Delhi to Houston 2 weeks ago. United canceled the flight, promised to refund the change in flight fee, and the difference in fare for flights going to the same final destination that were booked in the same class. Long story short. I re-booked a new flight with United, same class (Economy) to the same destination. The ticket was $432 more expensive ($864 really, as I had to purchase a ticket for my wife as well). So last night I get an email saying I've been approved for a refund for the 2 x $300 flight change fees, but not the difference in fare. Customer support is giving me the run-around; what advice do yall have? Edit: this blew up! Thanks for all the input guys and gals. Couple extra points: I'm a silver member in their rewards club, almost to gold status. I spoke to customer service on the phone; they tried to deny they would cover the difference in fare but resubmitted my claim with some notes about their agreement to cover it (which I guess I'm supposed to provide proof of; jokes on me for not having a screenshot of their contract). If I dont get a positive resolution I will 100% call my CC and dispute the charges. Stay tuned yall; don't touch that dial! Edit 2: for the folks asking how/why I rebooked instead of getting them to do it: 1. I was in India and didnt have phone service to call. 2. I was hundreds of miles from the airport so driving there to talk to a ticket agent wasnt an option 3. The email and notification in the United app both directed me to a portal saying "book through here and we will refund your ticket change fees/difference in fare for same class ticket." I thought it sounded weird too - best case, I essentially gave United a rent free loan for 4 weeks. [link] [comments] |
When restaurants charge you $1 more Posted: 23 Apr 2019 10:47 AM PDT I've noticed this trend recently when once in a while that restaurants will add on $1 or 2 more after you tip. For example I know I signed for 33 the other day - however, when on my bank account it registers 34. Or when i buy a snack or something and they'll add on 50 cents. Of course it's not a big amount of money but the dishonesty is not cool. What would be the best course of action to take? [link] [comments] |
Homeless, broke, and trying to finish my degree... Posted: 23 Apr 2019 01:39 AM PDT I apologize if I'm not in the right place. I'm stressed and trying not to cry. I moved out of my abusive parents house when I was 18. Now at 21, I live usually on campus with full financial aid/loans for my tuition and housing, but during the school breaks I keep needing to find new places to crash for weeks at a time. So, I need to take a summer class, from 9-1 M-F and I am trying to work on campus from 2-7 at $12/hr (but my boss is doing me a favor by giving me hours so idk how much more I can squeeze out of him). The problem is, I live in a place w high housing costs, and I don't have a car nor license. If I go too far away, I'll have to uber and as of now I'm not entirely sure if the roads to Stony Brook University have shoulders I can bike or walk on. My boyfriend is graduating this semester and if he gets a job around here the easy option is to move in with him for a few months while I finish my degree (in December). He's trying to teach me how to drive but again it's difficult, as I have no car of my own and he's nervous about letting me use his, and understandably so. I support myself, and I'm currently about $800 in credit card debt but I'm trying to make ends meet. We already cook low cost meals and I haven't gone out in ages, but I'm so at a loss. Is there any possible way to get help for food? Or housing? Or transportation? Should I give up on my college degree six months before I finish it? There's a mall a $15 minute drive from campus I can attempt to work at as a second job but how would I get there? Are there resources for me? I'm not in contact with my parents or anything like that. I'm so stressed. Please help... [link] [comments] |
How do we split rent in a 3 bedroom house with unequal amenities? Posted: 23 Apr 2019 05:12 AM PDT What is a fair way to split up rent? It's $2250 ($750 each) if we split evenly but Bedroom 1: 11x12 with a one closet Bedroom 2: 14x14 with two closets Bedroom 3: 14x14 with two closets and own bathroom I have bedroom 1. My friend suggested $735, $750 and $765. I didn't think that made sense and I wanted to negotiate for cheaper rent...but I wanted to see others thoughts on this EDIT 1: Some extra information that may or may not be relevant: me (bedroom 1) and the person in bedroom 2 are students graduate programs, the person in bedroom 3 has a full time job. Because of this, I am looking to take the cheapest room (so the bidding system likely won't work). All of our names are on the lease that we will sign for 1 year with the option to renew in June 2020. Edit 2: there is no garage/parking pad. This house is located in the city so all street parking. I currently live in a different place with one of the girls now and it's awesome, but we wanted to move to a different location in the city! Edit 3: We decided on $720, $755, $775. I asked if we could revisit the rent prices prior to signing the lease given the differences among the rooms. They initially came back with $730, $750, $770. I showed a breakdown using splitwise, which showed the rooms around $670, $760 and $820. Then they came back with $720, $755 and $775. I was hoping for something like $700-$710, but I do not think it is worth the stress/hostility this early on. Thank you everyone for your help! [link] [comments] |
New job! Significant salary increase. How do I prepare? Posted: 23 Apr 2019 06:33 AM PDT As mentioned in the my post title I was recently offered and accepted a big time enterprise sales role. I did ok the past few years and made about 70-75k. This offer has on track earnings of 275k annually with half of that being base salary. I also received 100k in company stock as restricted stock units. So the big question here is after I pay my debts (10k in cc, 10k loan from my brother, and 2500 left in car payments) how do I handle this income? What's the best way to decrease my tax burden? Any tips or suggestions on things to do in advance of my start date May 1st? Thank you! [link] [comments] |

Make sure your senior citizen loved ones are prepared for scam calls. Any additional advice? Posted: 23 Apr 2019 06:37 PM PDT Today, my 93 year old grandmother with dementia received a call from her "nephew" saying he was in trouble and needed money. My uncle (lives with her to help look after) overhears her talking to somebody and was a bit confused as to who it was. He walks out and sees her with her credit card in hand ready to read it off. He asks her, she says [nephew's name] is in trouble and needs $4,000 immediately. My uncle (father to her nephew) asks to talk to him, and he hears the person on the other side telling my grandmother not to pass the phone. My uncle snatched it and hung up. She was very lucky that my uncle overheard her talking and got to the phone in time. I can only imagine how often this happens and the scammer/criminal gets away with it. Now, the rest of the family is talking about things to do to prevent my grandmother from future situations. Hopefully this can help others with family members in similar situations get ahead of a potential problem. We are calling the bank to lower her daily spending limit on her cards. We are unplugging the landline since anyone my grandmother needs to talk to has her cell phone. If there is anything else that might help, please chime in. Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Credit Karma Tax Error for High Earners Posted: 23 Apr 2019 07:43 AM PDT UPDATE: My apologies guys, seems that my wifes W2 for some reason was showing up as mine even though I remember explicitly selecting "This form belongs to my spouse." Guess I fat-fingered it. u/Savabg got it right. Ignore and continue as planned. I filed my taxes with an accountant (married filing separately) but was using Credit Karma to double check his work and check if filing jointly was better. After filling everything out and double checking it was correct, I saw that I was due a refund of about $7K through Credit Karma, where filing separately we owed net $200. As you can imagine I was peeved, but prior to calling my accountant and giving him a word or two, I decided to double check all the numbers. After delving into all the nitty gritty, I saw that for some reason Credit Karma gave me a credit of 7961 on Schedule 5 line 72. This didn't make any sense. Both my wife and I hit the max cap on our social security tax of 7960.80, after which our employer stopped taking money out of our paychecks. For some reason Credit Karma is using the individual maximum as a joint maximum, this is incorrect. Regardless of filing status, every individual filing taxes owes 6.2% tax on any earnings up to $128,400 (hence $7,960.80). I went back and played with the numbers putting my wife's SS taxes paid at $7,000 and mine at $1,960.80 and credit karma again gave me back $1k credit on my schedule 5. If you filed jointly and your income was greater than $128,400, I strongly advise you check your documentation and correct the error just in case you got that credit incorrectly. Otherwise you will have to pay it off in 2 years with interest when the IRS finally checks your taxes. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 23 Apr 2019 07:14 PM PDT So me and my fiancee are getting married in a couple weeks we're both open about our finances with each other and both share in the bills. We each have separate banks right now and we want to have a shared account, but we also want to have our own personal checking so we can actually buy gifts and still keep it a surprise, and just so if the other person needs to pay for something out of budget it can come from their account instead of the shared one. would it be best to have a joint account and then an individual personal checking for me and her? one that gets an automatic deposit of X dollars a month? And what should we look at when trying to decide who's bank to use? Any ideas or help would be appreciated thanks guys! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 23 Apr 2019 07:59 PM PDT I need a medical loan for somewhere between 8 and 16 thousand dollars (maybe more but I doubt it). I am currently 18 and I don't know what my credit score is and I'm not sure if I even have one? My dad's credit score is somewhere between 610 and 640, not sure what exactly. I'm currently a freshman in college and won't be able to start paying off the loan until after I graduate and get a job. Is there any way I could get a loan like that? Would it also be possible to use some money in the loan for transportation to and from the medical center where I'd need to give the money for the medical procedure? The medical clinic's website mentions three medical financing options. The doctor's website mentions carecredit, but they require a credit score of over 650. There's also United Medical Credit. They have higher interests rate but I can't seem to find info about a required monthly payment or anything like that right after getting the loan. The third option is lending usa. I need help getting more information about those three and figuring out which one is right for me. The longest no interest timeline I can see for them is 24 months, but I won't be able to pay even a single cent until 4 years later after I graduate from college, but I need the loan this year. Debt collector said “pay for delete” is a violation of FCRA. Is this true Posted: 23 Apr 2019 02:13 PM PDT Hi all, I got a call from a debt collector for a $173 medical bill. I asked what pay for delete option I had if I were to pay in full and she was very insistent on pay for delete being a "violation" of the FCRA. Is this true? Should I fight this? Thanks all and forgive typos as I'm on mobile [link] [comments] |
Posted: 23 Apr 2019 07:27 PM PDT I was checking my credit score on creditkarma and the site informed me that i can check for any unclaimed funds i might have in the state of NY. I followed the steps, and I think I have unclaimed funds from an old savings account from 2011, but im confused. I never opened up a savings account in 2011, I was only 14, my mother had passed several years prior, and im sure my father would have informed me if he was behind this. Does anyone know exactly where this money is coming from??? Seems kinda like a scam to me. I recieved an email stating my claim is being processed, where the f is this money coming from?! Debt collectors are trying to collect someone else's debt from my dad. Posted: 23 Apr 2019 07:19 AM PDT My sisters ex boyfriend had a debt of over 1200$, my dad being the nice guy he is helped pay some of it off. Now that he paid some of it off, they are no longer going after my sister ex but going after my dad for the debt. What should he do? Also we're in MN don't know if that makes a difference. Apartment management is asking for financial documents for "compliance" Posted: 23 Apr 2019 06:37 PM PDT I am looking for apartments and am far along with one particular complex. They are asking to send them statements from both checking account and IRA account. Honestly, I am not too keen on sending them my documents. Everything is in best standing, however, the paperwork would go to the leasing office who would then send it to what they referred to as "compliance." I have never had a complex ask for such documents. Should I trust this? What do they do with those documents? EDIT: I already sent them a version with my redactions. They emailed me again asking to resend without redaction. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 23 Apr 2019 12:02 PM PDT I got divorced to years ago. In my final papers the final debt for the apartment we lived in was split between my ex and I. When I went to go pay it the first collections company said that my ex had filed chapter 13 and they couldnt speak to me but that once his bankruptcy had finished I would be responsible for the entire amount. So I left it alone because they would not take my money. Flash forward a few months the debt that is somehow in a bankruptcy gets sold again. I just called them to see if there was a settlement offer. They woman i spoked to told me that there was over $1000 added in intrest. And that the other party (my ex) had now filed chapter 7 bankruptcy which had taken his name off the debt. Leaving me with a terrible settlement offer. I am currently trying to get approved for a home. Do I try to get a loan for the entire amount they offered ($5000) or should i try to dispute this. I am really at a loss here. Edit: i spoke with my attorney when he filed the first time and he told me there was nothing he or i could do but pay it. [link] [comments] |
Pretty sure I'm about to lose my job. Posted: 23 Apr 2019 08:47 AM PDT I returned from a 7-week maternity leave last Monday. A week before I returned, my boss suggested we meet really quick for coffee to chat about changes in the company. At this meeting, my boss let me know that this chat was to give me a heads-up that they were beginning a search for a new position. This position has a slightly different title than mine, but make no mistake…all of the job duties are mine. My boss told me not to freak out, reassured me that my job was safe, and that they were very much looking forward to my return. When I asked how my job would change, he admitted that he wasn't sure yet, but that we'll figure it out and that he wants me to feel free to come to him with suggestions and any questions. He mentioned that he thinks another area of our business is growing and that we may be able to use my skills there. I've been at this company for 16 months. Being as objective as possible, I'd say I'm doing an average job in my position; mainly because the position itself is difficult in the way that it is structured. A new person may have ideas on how to improve the structure. I am solid in the other skills that my boss would like to use elsewhere. I feel frozen…I'm just acting as if everything is OK, but I'm freaking out inside. Everyone else in the company is aware of the new position, and I can tell some of them are wondering whats going on with mine. I have scheduled a one-on-one with my boss tomorrow because frankly with a new baby my nerves are shot and I have to do…something. But what? [link] [comments] |

Kicked out at 18 with $3000 to my name Posted: 23 Apr 2019 12:12 PM PDT Hi, all. To keep a long story short: dad's a drunk, got kicked out of my house at 18. I had a car that broke down last week and had to be scrapped, as well as my insurance as I couldn't afford the insane rates they charge 18 year olds. I just recently lost my job to a fire, but i also attend college full time. After paying off my last 2 semesters, I've found myself with $3000 dollars ($2000 of which is in stocks.) Staying at my girlfriends house (we live in NYC, one of the boroughs) and currently looking for both a job and either an apartment or a car. Just looking for some advice on how to move forward. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Please help, I have an emergency. My checking accounts both got overdrafted twice. Posted: 23 Apr 2019 12:41 PM PDT A bill was auto-charged to my old checking account that I had no money in. I paid the charge+the overdraft, and had a balance of 48.86 left. I paid 48.85 to my credit card, leaving me with 1 cent in my old checking account. My old checking account withdrew my payment TWICE, overdrafting me + the double payment I made to my credit card. I sent a customer support ticket, so hopefully that gets fixed? But then... Bank #2 's checking account charged me for two different, seperate payments I made to my credit card. I had hit "cancel payment" on my credit card, and put in a different amount. But it didn't work? I am now -372 dollars in balance to TCF. I don't get paid until NEXT FRIDAY. I have a walmart credit card and they require you to mail a dispute form that will take 2-3 days AT LEAST while I'm being charged overdraft fees daily. So contacting them to cancel the payment is not happening. What can I do? [link] [comments] |
(US) How to recover money after paying for a service that was a scam? If possible at all. Posted: 23 Apr 2019 05:51 PM PDT TLDR: Fell for IT scam last week. They "provided" a bullshit service by installing antivirus. But I paid for much more that I will never receive. Do I have a valid argument to go to my bank and ask them to dispute this and get some money back? I recently had some computer issues and I thought I had found a netgear support number. I called it, some guy answered and showed and walked me through some trouble shooting. Then he ended up convincing me that I had all sorts of viruses and other people were using my IP address. He tells me he can set me up with a firewall, antivirus, and 5 years of tech support. I was looking for new antivirus anyway so I paid the $300 for all that. He gets on my computer and installs webroot and troubleshoots me through the rest of my compputer issues. I pay with card over the phone. Everything seems fine. A few days later I get fraudulent charges on my card. Luckily the bank caught it and cancelled the card. They are sending me a new one. Then I start getting calls from this number I don't recognize telling me that I will be getting a refund for my IT services if I give them more information. So that finally set off the final red flags for me to think that this tech company stole my info. I called webroot and they verified that I have a working program of theirs on my computer but it isn't tied to my name. They said it's a fairly common scam. They know how to convince idiots like me that I have issues with my computer, they have off the shelf versions of the antivirus that they can install. Then that shows the idiot (me) that they are actually doing something about the problem. Then they charge the card and they do not give any additional tech support. I'm definitely not getting any sort of fire wall or additional years of support through them. They don't even answer the phone number they gave. I called my bank and it sounded like I couldn't dispute the charge because they did actually provide a service. They did trouble shoot my original issue and install antivirus. Now that I know that the antivirus is an illegally sold copy and that I won't be getting any further IT service with them is it possible that the bank will give me some of my money back? I must sound like an 80 year old man with the stupid stuff I fell for. Just trying to undo what I can from here. [link] [comments] |
I have no contact with my dad, but he managed to put me as a policy holder on his car insurance Posted: 23 Apr 2019 05:18 PM PDT This came to light when I was shopping for car insurance and Progressive insisted I had a claim in 2018 and advised me to look up a CLUE report. It finally came in the mail today and I see that my dad put me as a policy holder for his car insurance whilst I had a separate car insurance with my husband. He probably put me in to get discounts as I'm 0 ticket, accident and I'm in college, but he is a horrible driver with multiple accidents and tickets. He doesn't know my address, don't know how he got my license. What are my options? Should I call up that insurance and tell them to take me off and that they put me in it without consent? If I do that will they at least let him know that he needs to redo his car quote with them because I'd rather not have him driving around without insurance. EDIT: he might have listed his car under my name in the insurance [link] [comments] |
Posted: 23 Apr 2019 02:29 PM PDT 2 agents, 4 calls, 4 voicemails in the past 3 business days. I bought car insurance through them last week. They said nothing's wrong and my plan is active and all, but they keep saying they looked up whose house I'm living at (cousin's - but they just see the name and it's diff last name) and they "have some questions for me" about my relationship to her so that they "might be able to offer me some discounts." Is this bogus? Seems like if that's all they wanted, they wouldn't be frantically/desperately trying to get ahold of me every day. So I'm wary to reveal anything. Is this standard procedure to try to retain customers, or could they have a hidden agenda? Suggested course of action for me? [link] [comments] |
