How a Stable Boy Built a Business Bigger Than McDonalds

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 06:41 AM PDT

    Video here: https://youtu.be/uqROra0vDbo

In 1909 a farm boy got a job shoveling animal poop at a local ice shop. Back then, ice boxes needed ice delivered, and somebody needed to clean up after the animals that pulled the wagons.

This boy would grow that company to have more location than Holiday Inn, Walmart, Dunkin Donuts, and McDonalds COMBINED.

The boy stuck with the company through school, and through his business degree. He was now 24 and during merger talks, he negotiated on behalf of the Ice Shop he managed. This landed him on the board of directors for the new combined company.

That's when the manager for one of the locations went to him with an idea. "We're already paying the premiums to keep the ice cold, wouldn't it be convenient to stock milk and eggs and bread? Then people wouldn't need to travel hours to the nearest market."

The boy (now man) agreed, having done something similar the year prior at one of the locations. The world's first convenience store was born, and did VERY WELL.

They took to business model and instated it at all the other locations. They threw on some marketing schticks and the success only continued to rise. When the economy was in the toilet, the man took advantage of the other owners fears and obtained full ownership of the company.

The man founds a farm to get discounts on dairy. He founds a bottling plant, ice cream production, film rental, partial ownership of shell (gasoline). Things are doing well.

Ice shops have ALWAYS been open longer than other places. In fact, they used to be seen as a public utility. That's why a marketing team decided to really punctuate their longer hours with a rebranding. They renamed the store after the hours.

    That's how 7-eleven was born.

The company, unfortunately, took a crazy turn when attempting to prevent a hostile takeover, and almost tanked. Narrowly escaping closure by selling 70% of the company to Japanese investors. That's a story for another day.

    Why WeWork is Anti-Productivity

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 09:20 AM PDT

I recently came across an 'Ultimate Productivity Guide' that summarised the most important concepts from over 72 of the most popular books on productivity and self improvement including the One Thing by Gary Keller and the 4 Hour Work Week by Tim Ferris.

One particular concept talked about is studying in open spaces and how it is actually impossible for us to focus when our brain is constantly registering distractions such as people sneezing or even just shifting their chairs, even though our conscious mind often does not get distracted by these noises.

'Studying in an Open Space like a Library is Nothing more than a Cesspit of Mediocrity and False Productivity'

These subtle distractions block our brains from entering into the flow state and prevent us from truly optimising productivity - solution being we should all study in isolated quiet environments. Where does this leave WeWork and do you agree working in open spaces like an Open Plan Office only go to create a false sense of productiivty?

What is a marketing funnel? (Is this a useful/shareable definition/post?)

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 01:11 PM PDT

The marketing funnel is how a stranger becomes a prospect, then a lead, then a customer, and then a repeat customer. The reason "funnel" is such a fitting term is because every company's buyer journey has the most people at the beginning. At each stage, a few people drop off because they lost interest, went with a different company, or some other reason. (read more: What is a marketing funnel?)

Is it worth buying an island...

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 08:10 AM PDT

There are many islands close to their respective airports in neighboring cities (less than 1 hour by boat). The islands that I am looking at are all under 500k and undeveloped. Will the price of these islands rise over time and if purchased, what are some ways to profit other than tourism. I know it's a crazy idea and I'm definitely not in a position to afford any of these at the moment but I'm curious to know if it can be turned into a profitable investment. Also, I have read before that people are purchasing apartments in New York and then tokenizing them. Is this possible for an island and does it go against any regulations?

Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway by Susan Jeffers

"Feel the fear and do it anyway!"

To live a great, successful life, you need courage. Courage is the ability to do something when that 'something' lacks a guaranteed outcome; it is the ability to stare fear in the face and take action nonetheless. Doing this takes guts and a burning desire to push yourself outside your comfort zone even when you do not know what lies past the border.

How do we overcome fear and act despite its existence? Susan Jeffers' book, Feel the Fear and Do It Anyways describes effective strategies guaranteed to help you overcome fear and act.

If you're interested in this book you can get 2 audiobooks for free with a trial of audible using the link in the description of this video. Subscribe and turn on the notification bell so you don't miss any future summaries.

    The Premise Of The Book

The premise of the book is to overcome fear by acknowledging its existence, feeling it, and then taking action anyways. As the author notes and points out:

The main concept of the book is that our lives are like boxes–we live in boxes—and fear is the elements existing in the box you are living in. Fear is the element that keeps you stuck in your comfort zone.

To create changes in your life, you need to teach yourself how to overcome fear by pushing yourself outside your comfort zone or as the author would say, from a smaller box to another:

"The only way to get rid of the fear of doing something is to go out and do it."

Susan Jeffers's book, Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway: Dynamic techniques for turning Fear, Indecision and Anger into Power, Action and Love discusses techniques geared towards making you impervious to fear. This book summary distils the most important fear defeating lessons from the book:

Lesson 1: Fear Is Normal; It Never Goes Away

Fear is the most common emotion in the modern day world. As Susan Jeffers notes,

"We fear beginnings; we fear endings. We fear changing; we fear "staying stuck." We fear success; we fear failure. We fear living; we fear dying."

The core principle taught in the book is that to overcome fear, to act in spite of it, you must see it for what it truly is: a reality of life that never goes away. Start acknowledging fear as omnipresent. In fact, as long as you are growing or making progress towards a specific aim, fear, the fear of failure, the fear of trying, etc., is something that requires consistent energy and effort to overcome.

As long as you are pushing yourself slightly outside your comfort zone, fear will be a natural state of being. Learn to accept this; to feel the fear but still choose to act in spite of it. Always remember what Susan Jeffers says:

"One step at a time is enough for me. Impatience is simply a way of beating yourself up (from Kammy haynes)."

Lesson 2: Feel The Fear But Do It Anyway

Fear is an indicator that you are pushing yourself past the boundaries, and that you are growing and developing. Once you awaken your mind to this and internalize it as foundational mindset for your life, fear will never keep you from pursuing your aims.

"Pushing through fear is less frightening than living with the fear which comes from the feeling of helplessness."

If you fear public speaking a chance to do presents itself, do it despite the fear. The harder you push against fear and outside your comfort zone, the easier it will be to recognize fear, feel it, and then find the will to act despite it. Jumping in is the only way to triumph over fear. JUMP IN!

Lesson 3: Become A 'Fear Handler'

According to Jeffers, the best way to tackle fear—other than deciding to act in spite of fear–is to become a "handler." To do things that scare you and triumph over them, you need to feel in control. Saying "I'll handle it" is the ultimate control mechanism.

"If you knew you could handle anything that came your way, what would you possibly have to fear? The answer is: nothing!"

    As the author mentions:

"Every time you encounter something that forces you to "handle it," your self-esteem is raised considerably. You learn to trust that you will survive, no matter what happens. And in this way your fears are diminished immeasurably."

Living in fear instead of challenging your fears is not a good way to live life. If you think about it, "Pushing through fear is less frightening than living with the underlying fear that comes from a feeling of helplessness."

The more you act in spite of fear, the more competent and confident you will feel; when your self-esteem is healthy, you become resilient and strong enough to handle whatever life may throw your way.

    Conclusion

We overcome fear by acknowledging its existence, accepting it as a natural part of the growth process, and then acting in spite it: the sooner you start acting, the faster your fears dissipate.

What are some techniques to turning 'it' off?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 10:38 AM PDT

Not too sure I'm happy with my title but oh well.

So I've been working on various business ideas for roughly 10 years. Nothing that I would necessarily brag about. Things get launched but nothing too successful. Owning a business has been a dream of mine and I work extremely hard to try to accomplish this.

The problem is that it completely consumes my life. There isn't a minute of the day I'm not thinking about new ideas or about things that need to get done. It is ALWAYS on my mind. Seems I can never even relax. It has even gotten to the point where I feel guilty about hanging out with friends or trying to form relationships or even just taking the time to watch a movie because I have work to do. And when I do force myself to do something I never enjoy it, my mind is always on the business. I end up somewhat resenting the people in my life because they are taking me away from my work because they simply want to spend time with me. It honestly drives me insane, I can never seem to shut it off and I really don't know what to do about it other than to stop the pursuit.

Is this a case of 'owning a business is not for everyone'? Or are there things I can do to enjoy life again? I realize that sound super dramatic but it honestly is the case. I've thought about making a schedule to never ever work on Sundays for example. But I honestly look forward to the lazy days so I can sit inside and work all day, but when it's all said and done by the end of the day I hate myself for not socializing or doing anything but work. It seems like an absolute obsession of mine and I can't flip it off. Surely this has to be a common problem? Does anyone have any techniques for mitigating this?

    Thank you!

Advice on my new pressure washing business

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 12:12 PM PDT

I've started a pressure washing business in the last week after being unemployed for the last two months. I decided to make the jump after reading the various success stories on Reddit.

I started out by getting a logo designed and 2500 flyers made, and a few friends and I have been posted them all around my local area. What is very strange is within the first 30 minutes of flyering, we got a call and managed to secure a £240 driveway pressure wash. Since then we've done about 9 hours of flyering and haven't received one call.

I've got a website (www.poseidonpressurewashing.co.uk), a Facebook page and I've registered for Google My Business (just waiting for the verification code through the post).

What else can I do to advertise and get word out? I don't want to lose faith but it's hard.

Feedback request for Patent Law Firm Business Plan

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 02:14 PM PDT

The basics I need to have something to sell - patents/entrepreneur's dream I need to have someone to sell to - startups/entrepreneurs I need to have a way of collecting money - US Bank, paypal

The idea This company is mixture of a (1) in-house and external software to make us more efficient, (2) a blog on evolving tech and legal to gather clients, (3) and a patent prosecution law firm to make money.

My Competitive Edge/Moat Technical Expertise - I regularly attend hackathons and technical conventions, so I can report on cutting edge technology. When businesses review competitors, they won't have the technical background that I have because I have already coded using these APIs. Communication - I can be available 24/5 during the week using online messaging and bots. Traditional law firms require phone calls that cost money.

Costs *Reinstate my bar license *Fingerprinting *Reinstate my PO BOX *Insurance when it comes due *Business Phone number *MCLE's *Advertise using Google Adwords, Craigslist, and Marketing materials *Technology Costs - Server, domain name, etc. *Conference room rentals and coworking spaces *Filing fees and travel to clients should be paid by client, but re-consider *Trade shows and Hackathon budget for meeting clients *Professional Organizations (dues and conferences)

Growth and Retention Plan I will attempt to maintain between 15%-40% growth for the rest of my working life. This means more clients, more work per client, or higher prices. I will reassess which growth every quarter. I will attempt to maintain 90% retention rate for the rest of my working life. This means keeping 9/10 clients with the firm, and 9/10 associates with the firm. This metric will be reassessed every quarter.

In-house IT and Administrative Services As firms grow in size, the IT and management structures tend to fall apart. Docketing was a problem at both my previous firms. Document management also quickly becomes a problem. Billing software was an issue. Email and other correspondence was also a problem for both firms, because you had to dig through other attorney's emails to get information on the case or client policy.

As an overhead cost, I will support all of these services in-house with the idea of scalability in mind. Each service will have an in-house solution and a redundant, external free tier solution as we scale. The goal is to have a process in place for 100% up-time. These services will be regularly audited to see how they handle failure scenarios with 1 employee, 10 employees, 100 employees, and 1000 employees.

Proposed Methodology I will operate in 1 week sprints, on weekdays I will write posts, consult, examiner interviews, respond to office actions, and do research. On weekends I will draft patents and work on reports, which includes invoices and payroll. On Monday, I will send out these invoices. Money will come from Wag and out of the one time expense budget until the business is profitable on its own.

Milestones (from April 1, 2019) *Launch Website - 5 week mark *Accept money from first Client - 10 week mark *Income exceeds Expenses - 3 month mark *First Employee/Contractor - 6 month mark (check retirement plans, workers comp, taxes) *In-house IT services launch - 9 month mark *First Sponsored Hackathon - 12 month mark *------------------------------>If no clients after 12 months, re-evaluate *1 Million per year net profit - 5 year mark (to meet this goal conservatively, I have to make $65,076 in the first 3 months, charging $7,230.74 per patent for 3 patents a month.)

Pitfalls I tend to get stressed out. I need to regularly attend counseling to keep track of whether I am procrastinating. I'm fine with (whoever) as my Therapist. (7 week mark) Not enough income to support business expenses. Currently, we are on a tight budget. I will run this business Lean. That means for every week I will assess and document how to put in the the minimum amount of money to get a 10x return by a certain date. Then I will use the money accordingly, and measure the return. I currently support myself with dog walks. I will continue to do that until the business becomes profitable. We will not use any of Wife's income to support the business. (Maybe set aside $1000, and set aside money from Wag.) Get Bored - this is a lot of work, and it might not produce results very quickly. I need to stick with it. I will use my other app, motivation-therapy, to track my progress and stay motivated. (Positive reinforcement from clients, building habits of patent drafting even when no money) Conflicts of interest in current clients and former clients.

Documents that I need to regularly Update - (10% time) Calendar Report - Weekly list of client meetings and deadlines Billing - hours worked on what General Ledger - Daily of income, expenses, and net Tax Report - Daily list of miles, qualified expenses Users - Quarterly Report of Growth, Retention, Demographics, and Satisfaction Posts - Weekly Marketing Report on #of blog posts, views, engagement Leads - # of calls, %chance of closing, conversion rate Documentation - version of in-house and external software, testing, and Kano Motivation-Therapy - I will keep track of views for each action I take.

Marketing Plan - what is necessary to close first client Push marketing v. pull marketing Push - contact potential clients like Tom, Dick, and Harry Push - contact lawyers who could give me referrals Push - contact former engineering and law classmates, professors Pull - post to facebook, linkedin, reddit, SuS Push - contact friends and family individually (brother, aunt, cousin) Pull - Blog posts on /r/entrepreneur, linkedin, Pull - receive calls, messages, and email through Blog posts, education speaking, handing out cards, etc. Pull - Provide free patent advice Pull - Get name on lists of patent lawyers on cal bar page, and santa clara bar association Pull - get name of business on Yelp, Google maps, Avvo

4 points of contact - respond to initial contact, email, phone meeting, in-person or video meeting After one of these meetings - opportunity to walk away based on client's financial abilities, personality, unrealistic technology patent, outside my expertise, unrealistic timelines. Not going to litigate at this time - Need a bigger team and higher nest egg. Retainer agreement 2 week window- Update with Insurance info and any other info Accept retainer via check and put into US Bank - IOLTA account

Why I think a lot of people here fail, or feel uncapable of progressing

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 02:08 PM PDT

    Hey,

I've felt for a while that the first time someone Google's "how to make money online" they go down a dangerous, often disappointing rabbit hole. This is largely because of the amount of fucking parasites that try to feed off people's desires to improve, better themselves and seek development outside of an either academic or trade path. Because of that, I decided to make this as an attempt to report on what has truly helped me not only to enjoy things more and feel more secure, but also to have things to show for my efforts to myself. The editing is a bit sloppy, but I plan on reporting regularly on the things I truly find useful and hopefully help more than a few people doing that first Google. You can check my previous video if you'd like and I'll be uploading again later in the week and the following ones. Any criticism is very much welcome! Thanks

Do you hide how much you make from friends & family, or will you?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 02:06 PM PDT

I'm doing pretty good now but not like super awesome. My family knows how much I'm making and knows I can't help with anything. My family doesn't NEED help either.

However my mom has made some hints of wanting $, and for some reason I feel like it's created a mental barrier inside of me for earning more.

I can definitely earn a lot more with more effort, but I realized toady while browsing Reddit I have a HUGE subconscious fear of messing up family relationships with my increased pay. My friends don't care & are supportive, except for some childhood friends who have "asked for help" and I've distanced myself from them.

This sounds strange but I would LOVE to be abundant, help people out, fly my family out to vacations, etc. yet for some reason when they ask it just makes me cringe... Does this even make sense???

I guess I'd just like to know that if I make a lot of $ it will be mine and not theirs, and that I can share it as I please. The subtle hints my mom has made of creating an expectation of money make me hurt, and actually NOT want to become wealthy.

I don't want to lie about how much I make. I don't want to hide my success from the world. At the same time I don't want my family to try take from me, or for my mom to create these expectations / guilt trip me into giving money. I'd love to give if it weren't expected.

I feel like this has created a mental barrier inside of me. How would you recommend getting over this? And by mental barrier I mean as in I've subconsciously avoided creating more wealth as a result of knowing that my social position in regards to family will vastly change, and thus their expectations.

Flipping used books for profit. Entering entrepreneurship with a creative side. Side hustle as an active duty infantryman.

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 09:50 AM PDT

This could potentially provide a ton of value for those who are trying to enter entrepreneurship but don't have an idea yet. I'm currently in the military and have been struggling to find what I can do with my off time to better myself and eventually work on my own terms. While I am still not there, I have stumbled across this idea and I've been loving the process. Watch this video to see my creative side presenting how I operate this business I've started https://youtu.be/E3PVWPmbHi8 Essentially I source used books from thrift shops and book sales and then do some dirty work that leads to me sending shipments in bulk to Amazon's warehouse where they distribute my books as "prime" items to the end consumer. I'm only working with books right now due to the low risk and high demand. During my first three days I made $150 with not a ton of books in my inventory. The demand is real and if you want to learn more feel free to hit me up. If you want to see more results I'll be creating a lot more videos on YouTube and sharing my results via Instagram https://www.instagram.com/chanvyx/

Struggling to find a good Copy and Graphic Ad specialist

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 01:31 PM PDT

I've been looking for someone I can trust with my website / app copywriting, sales email generation along with graphical ad creation and have really struggled with this. What I've found is that there are no shortage of people that claim to have the skills but none that have really jumped out as 'the person I need to hire'. I've looked at referrals from friends, ran paid upwork job ads, even looked on fiverr.

Where have you all found your right copy and ad person? Does anyone have a referral they want to send my way? Any help would be appreciated.

We built a fitness chatbot. How do we take this thing to the next level?

Long term lurker here. I have teamed up with an engineer, a marketing guy, and a personal trainer to build a digital fitness trainer - it's called FitMate.

Right now, our core product is personalised workout programs sent in a PDF-format. Our chatbot lives on Facebook Messenger and we offer these plans for 29.99 EUR.

I have two issues, I would love to pick your brains on:

    1. How can we improve our chatflow and what features would you want in a workout plan? What do you think about the price point?

    2. How do we grow this thing? Guerrilla marketing and other growth hacks please :)

Presenting My Products to Potential Licensees/ Distributors. What To Do to Look Professional and Show Off My Products Effectively

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 12:25 PM PDT

In 2 weeks there is a festival coming up where I plan to show off various products I've invented which are related to the festival's theme (flow products if anyone cares, Festival Webpage). I have a functional prototype of my product that I successfully filed a provisional patent for 2 weeks ago that I plan to bring with me. I also have some other products I've made I plan to bring and show off in hopes of setting up a connection with distributors so I can sell products down the line.

My intention is to network with as many vendors at this festival as possible. There are 20 or so and I don't think it's unfeasible for me to make a useful connection with each one. I want to license one of my products to the larger companies there. For this I plan to let them use my functional prototype design and set up a dialogue so I can begin a conversation about licensing.

What I'm wondering is how should I do this and what should I bring with me. I'm assuming lots of samples of products I made. Business cards are also a given. My social media's good enough to where I can connect through it (admittedly it isn't the best though...). Past that I'm not sure what else I should bring/ do in preparation for this event. Any input would be highly appreciated.

Tl;dr. going to a flow festival. Have inventions I want to sell/ license. not sure how to prepare for this

    Starting a Lab

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 12:12 PM PDT

Hello, looking for some guidance. I am interested in starting my own contract testing lab. It would be a BSL1 level lab. Would it be possible to do something Like this in my basement? I have a decent sized space. What requirements would I have to meet?
