Posted: 06 Apr 2019 08:21 AM PDT My brother-in-law and his girlfriend just had a baby. The baby is perfectly healthy, but due to complications his girlfriend has unfortunately passed away as of this morning. She was 15 as well. Now HER family is threatening to take the child and saying it's my brother-in-law's fault for her death because he got her pregnant (which we are assuring him it's not his fault.) my brother in law (even though he is young) wants his child and wants to raise it. He has support of his entire side of the family as well as his dad saying he's willing to get a lawyer over it. I'm just wondering if things are different with minors? I know if they were adults, the baby would go to the father with no question. But since he's under 18 will things be different? (We're in Ohio if this makes a difference) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Apr 2019 08:43 AM PDT EDIT: UPDATE. The Lawyers responsible are no longer calling me back. The post office did in fact call back about an hour ago. To tell me their employee had my mail with him in his truck. When he arrived he told me he did not have it and he didn't know why they would tell me that. I panicked. I basically put my entire body between his truck and the road ahead so he'd be forced to talk to me. I explained the situation, explained what his employers told me, explained that this mail was the difference between my treatment or my funeral. He clearly felt bad and told me he would finish his route, inquire about the lost mail and return regardless. As I was typing this he returned. With my mail. Envelope ripped open, taped back together and paperwork utterly disheveled. The check present, but clearly ripped from it's staples, as was the rest of the paperwork. Just tracked the routing number. There is in fact, not one, but several accounts opened up in my name using this check. One actual physical bank and the rest digital currency through pay-pal and similar online accounts. Like what the actual fuck. It's a Saturday. What fucking bank, online or otherwise, is so fast that they don't bother to clear funds before they are actually confirmed? Forget the crazy pills, did I accidentally eat an entire psychotropic cactus and fucking forget? Because that's what this feels like. Like I'm tripping balls and the last one to be let in on the joke. SO that's where this is at at this point. Postal workers still under suspicion, a check I can't access and not one, but several accounts made in my name, online last night. HOW IS ANY OF THIS REAL. IT SHOULD TAKES DAYS TO WEEKS TO CONFIRM HAND WRITTEN CHECKS OUT OF ESCROW. I DON'T FUCKING BANK ONLINE. NEVER HAVE. NOT ONCE DESPITE THE CONVENIENCE. I'm really upset right now and my heart can't stop freaking out. That's the one thing I'm supposed to keep chilled out. My heart. Like no stress at all because my fucking heart tends to just fucking stop. For whatever reason. It doesn't fucking care it just gets sick of the bullshit I guess. I don't know. I'm not a fucking blood pump. I just have an angsty one. I don't think any of this is real life right now. This whole situation. I just can't. EDIT: I'm in Maryland. The bot told me add a location, but the editor won't let me put it in the title. I hope adding it here is ok? Ok, here's the explanation. The mail carrier showed up hours early yesterday. Usually they are here at about 5 or 6 pm. Yesterday, knowing that I had certified mail coming I waited all day. He was early and I was caught off guard. Ran out the front door like a bat out of Hades. By the time I got up to the road he had left a little pink slip and drove off. I found it odd how early he was and that it was a completely different guy than normal. The pink slip said to pick up the mail at the post office today. 4/6/2019. Went to the post office this morning and they could not locate my mail. The did not have it at the offices, they called whomever is delivering today and he said he does not have it. They don't know where it is and take my name and number. Here's where things get wonky. I called the lawyers office as soon as I got home this morning. Let them know what was going on and to cancel/reissue the check and I would be willing to come pick it up in person. I'm told they have to call me back. When they call me back they tell me I have already cashed and deposited the check. UM EXCUSE ME?! NO THE HELL I HAVE NOT. An argument ensues. I'm told to call back on Monday to talk to one of the other estate lawyers in the firm. Then I talk to my sister, who was also an heir and had already received her check a couple of weeks ago. The check was not only handwritten she said, but she did NOT have to sign for it AND along with the check, in non-certified snail mail, was a sheet of paper with a copy of her id, her birth-date and her social security number on it. For tax purposes they said. So BASICALLY, checks for tens of thousands of dollars were handwritten by this estate lawyer and then sent out via unprotected snail mail, with the recipients personal information just printed out for anyone risky enough to open someone elses mail. Everything you need to open an online account. Including the routing number on the check itself. Between 2 pm yesterday and 8 am this morning? Someone got my check, opened an online account under my name with my information and I'm now being told that there is nothing anyone can do about it. I still have the pink missed delivery notice that I did not sign. I physically went to the post office. Plenty of people saw me and there were cameras everywhere. Now this post office is in pretty bad shape. Run down and everyone that works there is angry and nasty at all times. So I don't know if the cameras even work but I'm pretty sure they would never release camera footage without some kind of warrant. The people working there are barely willing to bother selling you a book of stamps. They aren't going to go out of their way to help me without some kind of legal intervention. I'm basically broke. I was waiting on this money to pay off my medical bills. I thought to myself "FINALLY" I will be able to get the help I need, pay off what I owe and maybe get back to living life. Now it looks like all I'm going to get is a long drawn out fight, which will ultimately eat up the inheritance I thought I was getting. I mean, by the time all this is over, I may not even be alive. That is not an exaggeration. I don't know what my options are, when a lawyer is telling me there is nothing any lawyers can do about it, including him. Surely there's something I can do? Like do I call the police? A different kind of lawyer? I have never in my life had to deal with anything like this. Sorry if this is the wrong place to pose this question. I'm feeling pretty desperate at the moment. [link] [comments] |
Sheriff's deputy is renting from me, refuses to remove his dog and is now making threats (Texas) Posted: 05 Apr 2019 06:36 PM PDT I own and manage a small apartment building (6 units). One is for my family, one is for my in-laws, and the other 4 are rented to paying tenants. Our lease clearly says no pets are allowed except service dogs. However, one of my tenants, who happens to be a sheriff's deputy, obtained two small dogs (I believe they are chihuahuas) last month. My in-laws, who live next to them, started complaining about barking. So I sent them a notice saying they have 30 days to either rehome the dogs, or they can end their lease if they desire. He texted me and said can we meet to discuss this situation. So I said sure, come over to my apartment. I thought he was going to claim they are service dogs or something. But when he came over, he was in normal non-uniform clothes, but wearing his gun. He walked into my apartment and said something like this: look, I don't really care what the lease says, my wife got these dogs and I'm not going to make her remove them. I said I'm sorry it doesn't work that way, you have to follow the lease. Then he put his hand on his gun, and said if you want to make an issue of this, there will be serious consequences. I was kind of shocked and didn't say anything, and he left. Now I'm not really sure what to do, to be honest I don't feel safe with him around, but I don't want to piss him off and cause problems for myself either. If anyone has any advice please tell me how to proceed. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Apr 2019 07:28 AM PDT Hi reddit. Sorry if the title is a mess. Was advised to come here by one of the students at my school. I have epilepsy. My seizures are primarily set off my stress, non-stable sleep patterns, and flashing lights. The first two are the important ones here. They are not grand mal (the ones you see on TV). I am not the only epileptic student on my college campus, and the other one I know of received housing accommodations. I put in for housing accommodations, and received back notice (after others received their accommodations) that the letter my doctor wrote was not sufficient. I had my doctor rewrite it, but was told that the committee would not be able to review my case this semester (my final semester). This means that unless by some miracle of god the 54 people in the housing lottery before me decide that they do not want a single, I will not get one. However, on this note, despite not giving me these accommodations, the college is still acknowledging my disability - they want to send me to the hospital every time I have a seizure. On a good day, I have 0-2. On an average day, with a roommate, I have upwards of 7. Their policy, if you refuse to go to the hospital, is to refuse to let you continue to attend classes or return to campus. I live in the US. I'm a college student. ONE ambulance ride is to expensive for me, never mind multiple a week. I have literally no idea what to do. Are they allowed to worsen my medical condition and then punish me financially for it like that? I'm going to have to drop out in my final semester if they enforce this. [link] [comments] |

Can the USA stop me from entering if I don’t bring my mortgage documents with me? Posted: 06 Apr 2019 05:15 AM PDT So I know that's a really weird title, I'll try and explain and I hope I'm posting in the correct sub! My boyfriend is from the USA and I'm from England and we're 3 years into long distance. In the last 3 years I've visited the USA to be with him 4 times (all within the last 18 months). Each visit is between 7 and 14 days so just regular holiday/vacation length (I'm getting good at the English-American translations) Each time I've visited the questions I've been asked at immigration have become more... intrusive and I just wondered if someone can clarify it for me as I'm a total immigration novice? I TOTALLY get that illegal immigration is a hot topic in both our countries right now so considering how often I've been visiting I did expect to be questioned more thoroughly however my last time at Atlanta had me panicking for the next visit. So this was September time last year, I arrive at Atlanta and queue for around a bajillion years to get through immigration. Ok so more like 2 hours if I'm being accurate. When I managed to speak to the immigration official and show my passport she started asking the usual questions that I'm used to; Why are you visiting? - to see my boyfriend. How long are you here? - 2 weeks and then home. Do you have a return flight booked? - I do indeed here are my tickets home. How long have you been together? - 3 years so far. Is your boyfriend American?- he is, from GA but living in MS. Then it sort of changed slightly... What is your job?- I work in retail management. How can you afford to visit so often- oh, I can't afford it at all. My boyfriend can and he buys my tickets though. What does your boyfriend do?- insert his well paid job which I'm omitting for privacy reasons How old is he?- he's my age, it's not some weird sugar daddy thing? Do you own or rent your house in England?- uhhh own it? Can I see your mortgage papers?- what? I don't travel with them? Anyway, to get to the point she continued to ask questions about my life back home. She wanted to see wage slips and my mortgage papers which I obviously didn't bring with me. She asked about my life in England and about my family, if I have kids etc. When I told her I have a 10 year old son she wanted to see pictures in my phone of him and especially pictures of the two of us together. Obviously I complied with all of this and eventually I think she accepted I have no plans to sneak into the country illegally however as she ended the questioning and handed my passport back to me she warned me that next time if I can't provide my mortgage papers and wage slips and or bills back home they could just refuse me entry and put me on the next flight back home. Can they do that? Just because I'm visiting regularly? I'm due to come back in the next few weeks and wondering what exactly I need to bring with me to make this process smoother and with less risk of being refused entry? [link] [comments] |
How do I get off of the no-fly list? Posted: 06 Apr 2019 02:58 AM PDT Not too long ago, I purchased a plane ticket from a travel agent and everything was all set. I arrived at the airport and while trying to check in, there was a very long delay. The airport official was reading something on the computer, then on the phone for a while, and eventually the federal police showed up and they handed me a letter saying that I was on the Passenger Protect Program (no-fly list) and was not able to fly. They then proceeded to escort me out of the airport. (& my ticket was never refunded). My question is: how in the world do I get off of the no-fly list? How can I find out why I am even on it? They are apparently not allowed to tell me why I am on it. I am not a terrorist... but I do have a criminal record. (Canada) EDIT: So much hate on here, lol. Thank you to the people with actual advice. EDIT 2: Some photos for those who are skeptical: [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Apr 2019 08:14 AM PDT My mother, listed siblings, and father live in a rented house. I know he's on the lease but I don't know if my mother is. I moved out 2 years ago, started living with my now-husband and support myself and only keep occasional contact with my mom. Basically we've pushed her for years to report him to the police/ICE and she's refused to (using religious reasons.) she is also a victim. They got together when she was 17 and he was of legal age (18+). He has done all kinds of awful things to her (abuse, blackmail, fraud, etc.) Now I want to report him to the cops/ICE, but I don't know what will happen to the house and my mother's/siblings belongings. They are visiting my maternal grandfather in a different state for a week (leaving Sunday morning) and I planned on calling as soon as they are on the plane. This is my only opportunity, because she can't try to convince the cops to leave/try to undo or prevent it from happening. We're located in the US, in Michigan. I'd like to know what the general process of events would be. I live in a city 20 mins away from them. Would the police come to my door? How long will it take to get him out of the country/jailed (I don't know which would happen.) What will happen to the belongings in the house? He's committed a lot of tax fraud in recent years, owes money to the government, etc. Somehow he's gotten away with it and managed it. I can answer any additional questions anyone has. I don't know who to talk to about this and nothing I found online has helped me. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Apr 2019 08:46 AM PDT My brother and I live in different states. I've recently bought a car (a month ago) with an auto Loan. I was at NY when I bought the car and currently living in Alabama. My brother is in NY. My twin brother is purchasing a new car today and ran his SSN. (Since we're twins our SSN is one number apart). Around the same time, I received a notification of a hard inquiry on my credit report. I tried to figure out what company looked into my credit and started to do some research. 5 minutes later my brother calls me and tried to find out who's SSN belonged to who. Apparently when they ran his SSN, they saw he pulled an "auto loan" a month ago. Now, I wasn't there when they ran his credit. My brother was with my sister and her fiancé at the time and all claimed they put the right SSN but I'm skeptical for obvious reason. The hard inquiry will stay in my report til 2021 and I'm livid. I'm planning on buying a house so every point matters. More information they told me: they said that When they ran his credit, they saw that I was an alternate for that SSN? Is that even possible? What can I do? I want to do more than write a letter to dispute the hard inquiry. Edit: so I'm going to lean towards the possible fact that my name is being pulled up when they run his credit. Is this an SSN issue? What can I do to fix this? [link] [comments] |
I did something terrible and now I'm terrified I'll go to jail. Posted: 06 Apr 2019 01:05 AM PDT Someone recommended I post this here so I hope it's okay. I really can't afford a lawyer either so I'm even more scared. I'm in NB, Canada btw if that makes a difference. I may get a lot of hate here, but I'm not a super sexually experienced guy. Not even really the most important thing to me, and I'm all about pleasing my partner. I had a girlfriend up until around an hour ago and she had this fetish that I had no idea was a thing until she told me about it. "Consensual non-consent". She always wanted me the one to initiate sexual activity, and wanted me to do it practically whenever. Even if I wasn't really feeling in the mood for it I'd do it because it made her happy. Took me a while to get used to it because when she would "resist" and say "no", I'd stop, and she would get flustered and tell me to just keep going. Admittedly it's nothing I would ever be interested in if I'd never met her. So I was with her again tonight, nothing felt off. She wasn't sad, upset, or anything that I could tell. She had just a housecoat on with nothing underneath, something she told me she wore often to "get me going". I'm not saying anyone ever deserves to be raped or sexually assaulted based on what they're wearing, but she told me whenever she wore that when I came over for me to initiate activity. I start going with her, she does her usual "protest" thing, but nothing was different about it. No real struggle starting, and it almost felt role-play like. Something I'd done several times before upon her request. But this time ended different, at one point she legit pushed me off, said she "didn't like that", and "wanted me to stop", which as soon as she pushed me off I knew something was up so I tucked myself away and became worried about what was wrong. I wasn't going to push for any kind of sexual activity, but she was legit angry and told me to get out and leave. When I tried to message her it she blocked me on everything. Thankfully I never admitted to any sort of act in those messages, so I guess I'm covered there. What the hell am I suppose to do? If she decides to go to the police about this, what can I really say? I doubt "accidental rape" is a thing to them and I'd be branded as a sex offender for life and go to jail. I'll lose everything if that happens. How the hell was I suppose to know? I feel confused, scared, and terrified. I don't even know if I can sleep tonight because I'm terrified I'll hear the cops on my door at some point and I'll be dragged out and booked. I've already tied my bathrobe sash around my neck and I'm ready to hang myself at the first sign of police, at least tonight. I have no idea what the hell my options are here. [link] [comments] |
Manager says my undesirable work schedule is because I took medical disability leave Posted: 06 Apr 2019 10:57 AM PDT I recently had to take three weeks of disability leave from my corporate banking job to undergo major surgery to remove a life-threatening ovarian cyst as well as a Fallopian tube, after which I spent a week in the hospital and then time at home recovering. Prior to this, I had always been scheduled to work two Saturdays a month and have the other two off. Since my leave, my manager has scheduled me for five Saturdays in a row. I asked her about this, and she explicitly stated that that she was giving me this schedule due to the fact that I had three weeks off due to medical disability. Is it legal for her to schedule me in a way that shows preferential treatment towards other employees who did not take time off for disability? This is in California. Edit: This was FMLA approved leave Thanks [link] [comments] |
Posted: 05 Apr 2019 07:34 PM PDT My brother recently got a job at a local gym helping the manager. The owner has invested a lot of money into the gym but it's losing money and they hired my brother so he could help "turn things around." He met with the manager and signed a contract for $25/hr plus 5% commission. Today the manager approached him and said it was "a miscommunication" between herself and the owner. She says the owner was preparing payday cheques today and realized he was receiving $25/hr. The manager said he can accept the $15 or leave as they will not be paying $25. The manager told him they'd pay him $25/hr for the hours he's worked up until this point. He left work after he was told this and is supposed to have a meeting with both the manager and the owner on Monday when he returns. He wants to go into the meeting and ask for $20/hr to compromise but he's afraid they'll say no and he'll be out of a job. He needs this job until he can find a new one. He currently lives at home and has already signed a lease for May 1 based on his income. Is there any legal action my brother can take or is this acceptable? If my brother insists on the $25/hr or coming to a compromise, can they fire him? What are his options here? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! [link] [comments] |
My 21M prying parents won't allow me access to my ID Posted: 06 Apr 2019 10:23 AM PDT My parents for pretty much all of my life treated like a kid, and still do. to give some context. They when I was young they "required" usernames and passwords for anything i signed up for. I also had a babysitter who my parents would tell to go through my backpack I guess to make sure I didn't have drugs or anything like that, but now its got to the point where I'm 21 and they are refusing to give me access to my own legal documents. Today I got into a heated argument on why they will not give me access to my SIN, passport, they even have my drivers licence (i only use their car and seemingly only aloud to use it when they are with me). I asked them for my passport and to that they responded what I needed it for and I told them I was going to sign up for a concurrency site (I'm Canadian)and that I just needed a picture of it. They came up with whatever BS excuse they could. "You aren't the one who paid for it" "You're going to lose it" "Idk where it is right now" it ultimately led to them just refusing to give it to me "cause I said no". My bank account is also linked to theirs and I get confronted whenever I make a purchase, like a full on interrogation if its something other than food. I want to change this and make my own account they they don't have access to and close the one they do but I can't because banks require ID which they will never give me. I don't plan on living with them anymore once I graduate university I want to move, change phone #. block them and not look back because I'm shackled down to what they think is best for me. I want some advice on how I can approach this and start with getting my ID from them [link] [comments] |
Hospital withheld their medical opinion that our child's heart was failing. Posted: 06 Apr 2019 10:06 AM PDT Hello, this is in Pennsylvania, US. Some medical information will be simplified for brevity. I'm so sorry this is a long story - thanks to anyone who has the time to read it. The attorneys I contacted in our area want to charge a significant fee for a consultation since this is a complex medical case, and we just don't know if we have anything here to justify it. Our 11 year old son was born missing a ventricle in his heart. He has had several heart surgeries over the years, and the expected outcome was that eventually he would enter a period of deterioration (i will refer to it this way throughout to omit complex medical jargon) and he would slowly die of heart failure, probably in his teenage years. He had a feeding tube in his belly his entire life because as part of his complex medical history, his esophagus did not function and he could not swallow well enough to sustain himself. About two years ago, he suddenly was able to eat more and more, and quickly got to where he could consume entire meals. For a year and a half, he ate full meals and was doing really great - rarely getting sick, no more turning blue from his heart condition, rarely having any issues at all. He was even able to come off the oxygen tank he had used his whole life and was running around free with no oxygen tubing! We went to the children's hospital and consulted with them about removing his feeding tube and closing the hole, because it was always red and irritated and leaked stomach acid, and hadn't been used for well over a year. We wanted him to have the highest quality of life possible, and that stupid feeding tube was really bothering him. The doctors gave us the following caveats about closing the hole: He had lost a slight amount of weight coming off the tube and eating by mouth (they had told us to expect this as many kids lose some weight making the transition back to oral feeding), but they said they had to bring it up, and they said we could run into trouble down the road if we have to put in another feeding tube because the original site would be unavailable and there is only so much real estate on the abdomen to place a tube. The surgeons told us they had gotten the green light to close the tube site from his cardiologists, so as far as his heart was concerned there was no reason to hold off, and as long as we were okay with the above caveats we could move forward. The surgery to close the feeding tube hole was a disaster. They took the tube out and stitched up the hole. Within three days, stomach acid began leaking through the closed site, eroding the sutures and ripping the hole back open, several times bigger than before. After about five days, he had a gaping wound where the tiny feeding tube hole had been. He was not allowed to eat for 14 days, receiving only IV fluids (not IV nutrition). They dropped a tube down his nose and continuously suctioned his stomach so the acid could not further erode the wound. After a few weeks, they did the surgery again, this time more aggressively. It worked. There was no leakage and the wound healed. However, we discovered that our child's esophagus stopped functioning, and the degree of malfunction was more severe than before. Additionally, he quickly began to have cardiac and pulmonary trouble, and ended up in the cardiac intensive care unit. We were told to make our final arrangements because his organs were failing. He stayed there for three weeks on machines and unconscious. Our son, being the tough kid that he is, pulled through. He came off the machines. At that time we made the decision to transfer him to another children's hospital out of state in an attempt to secure better care regarding the feeding tube hole. The day before his transfer, a cardiac intensive care doctor pulled us aside and said, "when you get to the other hospital, they are going to tell you that he is in [that period of deterioration that leads to death]. I believe he is, and has been, and I charted it sixteen days ago. I requested consult with the heart failure team but was told no, and I was told not to tell you he was in [that period of deterioration that leads to death]." When we got to the children's hospital out of state, they told us within the first thirty minutes of arrival that they believe he is in [that period of deterioration that leads to death]. They also told us that the first clue this was happening should have been the first surgery failing. The stomach acid erupting through the site should have made a competent doctor stop and look at his heart situation because increased pressures during [that period of deterioration that leads to death] cause the stomach to shut down and back up like that. The doctors at the new hospital have said (leaning in and whispering to us) that the surgeries caused, or at least dramatically hastened, our child's organ failures and path to death. He is now expected to live 6 months. I have reached out to the patient relations department at the first hospital, and they do not resond to phone calls, letters or emails requesting clarification about when they first believed he was deteriorating, and why we weren't told when the cardiac ICU doctor charted that she believed he was. Sorry about the long post, I appreciate any input. [link] [comments] |
I just discovered my father is a pedo Posted: 06 Apr 2019 05:05 AM PDT Dear Reddit, as the title suggests, I'm quite shocked. Yesterday I was contacted on FB by a fake account that began asking infos about my father. I initially thought it might be a scam in order to get some security questions, but then suddenly it began telling me my father full name, details about his life and my mom. Info that is not available anywhere. Both him and my mom are quite old, let's say over 60. Haven't spoke to him in 8 years as he was always very abusive/bipolar to the family, and left as soon as I could. So, after chatting I called (and recorded) this person on Facebook. This woman began telling me that my father posts online on erotica forums asking for young girls to masturbate in chat for him or write him fantasy stories about 20-19 but even 12-14 year olds. He told her that he's 10 years younger, that he's divorced, that he has no children etc. sent her provate photos (oh god) of him that let's say couldn't be found online. With this woman, and apparently 3 friends of her, things went further. He sent them money, asked for usb media with pedo material, stuff that at some point she never sent. He told her that he has a dungeon somewhere with all this material and other sex paraphernalia, something I cant confirm as I haven't visited their home for years. There were a lot of other details (a common friend of his, that was in charge of sending these women burner phones and dealing with logistics) so most if not all of this has to be true. Since this woman didnt want to proceed at some point, he began threatening her, was able someway to get his money back. Now this woman is upset as she needed the money for rent and my father stopped responding. She was able to contact me before calling home on the landline. I begged her to stop before reaching my mom and giving her so much sorrow from discovering all this. I now find myself in a very difficult situation and wanted to ask some advice before telling this incredibly embarrassing story to my lawyers. I found the following solutions to this:
But I really don't know what my position is. Am I already in trouble from just knowing this? How can I get back to my normal life after something like this. My wife is speechless and so am I. If you have any suggestions, they would be incredibly helpful in such a moment. Thank you so much [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Apr 2019 11:25 AM PDT Teacher here, I do astounding work, build relationships, teach to empower, not to the test, work for an education not for a pay check. Not all students will level with you when you're in this field of work. This girl, who wasn't doing well in my class, complained about not being comfortable in my class and gave reasons that were pure lies. District investigated and came back with a decision saying accusations unsubstantiated. I got to keep my job. But honestly, I don't want to be with the district and want to find other opportunities after this shitstorm I had to go through. The problem is, every application I try to fill online asks question "have you ever been or is currently under investigation for inappropriate conduct?". How do I answer this question? They want a reason when answered as "yes". Will this bar me from getting a job? My union rep said to answer it as "no" and said this will be in personnel file of the district and other employers can't access it. Is this true? Any suggestions are extremely appreciated. Neighbor keeps calling the cops on me. No laws being broken. Posted: 06 Apr 2019 11:32 AM PDT In the past 2 years I have had the cops called 4 times on me by my next door neighbor. Once for having a legal cannabis garden, once for moving his basketball hoop to park on the street, once claiming that I sicced my little dogs on their kid. After that point I spoke with an investigator from the DA office who recommended that I just keep a camera on me at all times in public. The next morning I was on my front yard with my camera when he came out to take his kid (15) to school. No comment to me, but an hour later a cop is knocking on my door. I call her back and she states that based on her training, that (taking pictures of minors) is what sexual offenders do. Since I didn't come to the door (not that I would, but I was out of town) that she went and interviewed neighbors in the cul de sac. At this point I am very concerned that they may SWAT my house. What can I do to protect myself. This guy is now challenging me to fight, trying to get me jammed up. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 05 Apr 2019 12:31 PM PDT Hello. It looks like the post is locked. Last week I witnessed a San Francisco based startup company rob each of their customers for thousands of dollars overnight and don't exactly know what I can do about it. It seems like something that would need a class action lawsuit a la Erin Brockovich. I will be referring to the 3rd party company as the 'startup', the company that I work for as the 'leasing office', and the people who moved into my building through the startup service as the 'residents. TL;DR at the bottom… CONTEXT: I work for a brand new 'luxury' apartment community. We have been working with a startup that offers roommate matching and rent protection services for individuals who are looking to rent by the room in otherwise unaffordable apartment communities. Their niche is they provide a divider which transforms the living room into a 3rd makeshift bedroom, creating really affordable housing options for people. Each resident pays a different amount based off of their bedroom type and pays directly to the startup. The amount the resident pays the startup reflects their portion of a rent plus a monthly premium referred to as a 'service fee' (usually between 5-10% more than their portion of the rent). The resident also pays the startup a refundable 'move-in fee' equal to one month's rent when they first move in. This is paid to cover any damages or to be used in the case a roommate fails to pay the startup for rent. The startup also offered roommate replacement and subletting services when one of the roommates failed to pay rent which was covered in the 'service fee'. Their rent protection and roommate finding services are outlined in a service agreement between the resident and the startup. There is a separate standard lease between the residents and the leasing office which does not mention the startup at all. This partnership seemingly worked really well for all parties involved. The leasing office gets rent paid on time every month from the startup. The startup collects a monthly profit and has a deposit on file to cover their losses. The residents do not have to worry about the accountability of their roommates. They currently have 45 people living in my building and around 3,000 people nationwide. From my understanding everything that I am going to outline happened to every single person who decided to partner with them. THE SCAM: On March 25th everything changed. With no prior notice the residents started their day with email that starts with the following: "Based on feedback from partner buildings and residents alike, startup will no longer facilitate payments from existing residents. This change will take effect immediately. This means you and your housemates will begin paying rent directly to your landlord on your next rent due date of April 1, 2019." Further down the email reads, "You and your housemates have signed a lease with the building and remain fully liable for all necessary payments to the landlord based on your lease agreement". What does this mean? Rent protection is gone. Payments made on your behalf are gone. A lot of these residents who were paying rent to the startup mid-month were told they had to pay rent by the 1st. I had some residents who paid rent as late as March 22nd and were told the next day they would be paying rent on the 1st. An almost impossible task. The email goes on to explain that as a result of these changes the resident would be receiving a refund in the mail. The 'refund' is broken down like this: 'Initial Move-In Fee' minus 'Future Service Fees' minus a 'Partition Deposit' = Refund Basically, the startup decided to take the monthly premium that the resident was paying (which was never explicitly outlined in the service agreement), multiply it by the remaining months on their lease and charge it to the resident in one large lumpsum and call it 'future service fees' while simultaneously telling the resident that they will no longer be offering the services they are paying for. Imagine Netflix emailing you explaining that not only will they no longer be offering streaming servicing while at the same time charging you a years' worth subscription charges with no warning. To make it worse they decided to also charge each resident a 'partition deposit' to the tune of $568 for the living room partition. With no warning or agreement or consent from the resident. And the cherry on top is that they have pulled all of these bogus charges from the 'refundable' 'move-in fee' that the resident has already paid and was expecting to get back. If your asking yourself, 'doesn't this violate their service agreement?' the answer is YES. They have violated their service agreement at least 6 different times from what I can tell. They hastily made a new service agreement, which had no mention of the rent protection or payments made on behalf of residents anywhere, outlines this partition deposit, and was never signed by the existing residents. THE BIG PICTURE: I have a very unique perspective here as I have information from both the residents and also from an inside source of the startup. The startup had a local rep who often worked in our building touring prospects and getting people signed up with the startup. He was let go this morning. And he spilled the beans to me as to why this is all happening. Turns out, the main VC for the startup is pulling out. The startup has been losing money and not performing. The startup did not have the money to pay the VC. Their solution? Pull money from the bank account that held everyone's 'refundable' move-in fees, charge all of their customers a years' worth of service fees upfront along with a made up partition deposit all to pay off this VC. So that's what they did. They pulled out of every market that isn't San Francisco fired all of their staff. They are leaving the leasing offices to deal with the aftermath of the residents who are left without answers or money. They are also at risk of eviction if their roommates don't pay rent on time which was the case for 50% of the people in April. The landlords are left to clean up the mess. What can I do? What can they do? Please help. TL:DR Last week a roommate finding and rent protection based startup company went under and proceeded to take money from their customers deposits to pay off their VC, violating their service agreement and firing their entire staff. [PA] Workplace does not have locks on bathroom doors, is this legal? Posted: 06 Apr 2019 10:08 AM PDT I work as a CNA at a facility for intellectual and developmentally disabled residents. The particular building that I work in has four restrooms, two intended for residents and two intended for staff. The residents I work with are relatively high functioning and understand which restroom is theirs. There is one resident that has sexual attractions to staff and has been caught multiple times masturbating to staff. They have taken a liking to me and lately has been walking into the bathroom after me. There's nothing I can really do to prevent this as the company will not put a lock on the staff bathrooms door. They will come in once I'm already in the middle of using the restroom and stare at me peeing as I'm pleading with them to please leave. Often times, while I would just sit there until they leave, they often don't and I'm forced to stand up, further exposing myself, just so I cant pull my pants up and get out of the situation. This puts me in a very uncomfortable position and, while I do document it, I worry that somehow this can fall back on me as my privates are exposed to a resident. I understand the concern from management that the residents might lock themselves in the bathroom but that's what keys are for. Can they legally keep me from having the privacy I deserve to use the restroom? [link] [comments] |
Foreclosure after mortgage is sold Posted: 06 Apr 2019 10:50 AM PDT We filed bankruptcy in February, our mortgage company filed a petition to foreclose. Under our attorneys advice we got together as much money as we could to make an offer to the mortgage company to not foreclose on us. We were able to come up with the full past due amount. The lawyer made the offer to them and is waiting for the paperwork to come through. But in the meantime the mortgage was sold to a different company. Our lawyer says we still need to pay the old mortgage company to avoid foreclosure. The new mortgage company says to pay the past due to them. We can not afford to pay it to both companies. What can we do? Edit: In Michigan [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Apr 2019 09:39 AM PDT Me and my fiancee live on a lot where there's a tree that we need to cut down because it's leaning and could land on the house. The thing is the tree sits spank in the middle between 2 lots. Do I have to ask for my neighbor's permission or can we just cut it down? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 05 Apr 2019 06:38 PM PDT The house I currently live in belonged to my late landlord. He left the house to me in his will, but made another person the executor of his estate. This means I don't have access to the proceeds of anything else tied up with the estate. Apparently my landlord opened up an equity loan on the house right before he passed away. There is money from the sale of some cars in an account that can be used make the payments on the loan. The executor was supposed to be making payments on the loan from estate account but evidently hasn't been doing it for the past year. The loan is now $1800 overdue and the bank is threatening to foreclose on the house. I've contacted the executor and the attorney in charge of settling the estate several times to try and speed things along, but I basically got told to "back off" since I'm not the executor. The probate has dragged on for 3 years now and I'm really scared I'm going to be put out of the house because apparently the attorney and executor can't be bothered. Any advice for this situation? Posted: 06 Apr 2019 10:23 AM PDT My 2016 return was filed jointly, but I have since divorced. To make matters more interesting, I also have a no-contact order placed on me, so I can't discuss any of this with the ex. Not knowing what she is doing with her taxes, or if she has any plans on paying for her share of this, what kind of things should I be doing to keep me from being stuck with the entire 4k? Should I process my return for 2018 as normal? Ugh (x-posted from r/personalfinance after suggested). edit: Located in Washington state, USA [link] [comments] |
