Does anyone else work at coffee shops because you can’t focus at home?

    Posted: 06 Apr 2019 09:56 AM PDT

I have a beautiful desk and computer with two monitors at home, but I find myself going to coffee shops with my laptop as I get too distracted when home. I am just curious if anyone out there does this frequently or has tips for productive work at home?

Does anyone know of a way to find out if someone is already doing your idea?

I had an idea for a news/entertainment publication that fills a gap/need in the market. To my knowledge there is none like this I can think of. But is there a way for me to validate this? Are there any tools or places I can search for top blogs/publications in this certain category?

I'm already on UpWork and have been responding to all posted jobs that I quality for. Are there any unique ways paid or free that others are using to market their agencies?

Selling tshirts on my Instagram feedback

    Posted: 06 Apr 2019 02:08 PM PDT

I recently started promoting tshirts on my Instagram page but a couple other entrepreneurs think it's a bad idea as it doesn't have anything to do with photography.

They said I should be doing reviews and adding value via a YouTube channel.

    What do you think? ..

    Liability with a textile product?

    Posted: 06 Apr 2019 01:36 PM PDT

Hey folks, I'm making a waterproof and water-absorbent vehicle seat cover (Mudbutts.com if you want a peek, I'm super proud of it) . It is pretty simple, but necessary in the PAC NW for mountain biking and there's a space in the market for one.

I've registered as a Sole Proprietorship in BC, Canada, which potentially opens me up to litigation in case something goes very sideways with the product. Is there a basic form of Sole Prop insurance I can carry in case someone's kid eats the damn thing, or something equally silly happens to stay protected?

    Thanks!

Spending Across Multiple Currencies As A Digital Nomad

    Posted: 06 Apr 2019 01:32 PM PDT

If you're a digital nomad, good for you. It's a rad lifestyle, full of adventure and new experiences. You get to travel the world, meet new people, and explore new cultures. It's fun – I've lived that life on and off for a couple of years and, although I'm pretty settled now, I'm not yet ready to say goodbye to it. It's definitely an option once I get bored with staying in one place.

However, this lifestyle is not without its challenges. One of the most annoying ones is keeping track of your spending across multiple currencies. It's easy to forget that everything you spend on your cards and apps is actual money, because currencies fluctuate widely in value when compared to one another. For example. I do all my financial math in Croatian Kuna, but I get paid in US dollars, mostly. When I was living in Mexico, all my spending was in pesos. At one point, spending pesos was like spending Monopoly money – it just didn't feel real! Of course, this resulted in me overspending my set budgets for things by a mile (and resulting in some really lean months once I came back home!).

Still, there are things that you can do to keep on top of things. Here's what I have implemented so far (tactics and apps) and it works (relatively) well for me.

    • Get familiar with the local currency – don't get fooled by the Monopoly money feeling! Before getting somewhere, check the local currency and the exchange rate, and get an approximate feeling for it. For example, when I was stationed in Iceland for a brief period of time, I would get shocked when the shopkeeper would say "That would be 2000 kroner". It seemed a ridiculous amount of money. But, knowing that 1000 kroner was around 50 Croatian kuna, it made more sense. Get familiar with that percentage calculation in your head, especially if the currency you're spending is worth more than your own – it saves you the shock when you check your bank statement.
    • Do your budgeting in local currency – if you plan on staying somewhere for a longer period of time, make sure your budget is local. Assess your expenses in your native (the one you're most used to using) currency according to what you are used to spending, and just convert it to local. You will know exactly what you're spending each day without doing exhausting mental math all the time.
    • Use services such as Revolut & TransferWise – both are semi-banking services available to freelancers around the world. They are great because they allow you to exchange your pre-loaded currency to almost anything, which you can then spend by using a card that's provided to you (it's a Mastercard in both cases so it's good all over the world). I'm not sure about TW, but Revolut will also exchange your base currency to local currency when you are spending (if you set it up that way) at the best mid-market rate so you can keep track of all your expenses in just one currency. You can apply for TransferWise here, and for Revolut here. I use both but prefer TransferWise because that's where most of my clients pay me.

It requires a bit of financial savvy to keep on top of all of this but it's a sweet problem to have. You're out there, traveling and seeing the world – quit complaining about it! 😉

Help me define terms for a licensing/royalty deal for a consumer hardware gadget that will have global distribution.

    Posted: 06 Apr 2019 12:54 PM PDT

I have spent the last 18 months developing a world-first consumer hardware product with several world-first and awesome features. I have been contacted by a major player, actually the biggest player, and already had a meeting with their CEO at their personal request. I have filed a PCT application last week (priority of last year's provisional) and things have been moving quick since I can finally talk about it with the right people. They offered me 20% wholesale royalties and a position in the company (undefined, though gives me creative control and intimate involvement with the development of this product). I also own my own company 100% and they are fine letting me run that separately and establish other business relationships that way.

I have no experience with this kind of thing, but I know 20% is a generous royalty. I want to ensure this is completed and done correctly, and they don't go with some other product that may come along and I am bound to an agreement if achievements are not met. I think this can be developed very quickly, and they offered to invest whatever I need in my company for me to do it all but I believe it will be much better of we do it together.

I don't even know what concerns to have, or how to counter. The ball is in my court in how I want to proceed, and they seem very flexible to accommodate me.

    Thanks for any advice.

    How to manage a DJ

    Posted: 06 Apr 2019 12:50 PM PDT

My best friend is a very talented producer and DJ. But he doesn't have the business mentality to get himself out there and market himself, so I'm in charge of that because...I do. But I'm also unsure how to break into that market.

Where should I start? We live in a big city so I'm thinking about going bar to bar, leaving his card and info for private parties.

I need more advice on managing talent. Thank you all so much I love this sub.

Looking for a US consulting firm, or independent experienced developer to build site for equity only with short time line?

    Posted: 06 Apr 2019 12:06 PM PDT

    Hey folks,

I am searching for a US based developer (Chicago area gets highest preference) to build a healthcare website, that contains sensitive data and patient privacy details. I think the site is mostly an actionable form, so the work required should be low-moderate in rigor, but the security must be high. Offering equity only as payment. Does anyone know any reputable firms that do this kind of work?

Ideally, this could be done in 1 month.

    Packaging Labels - Handheld Printers

    Posted: 06 Apr 2019 11:59 AM PDT

    Hello Everyone!

I have products that I will be packaging soon and I need to put a 'packaged on' date on each package. I know I can easily do this via a label/sticker, but my packaging is specifically designed to be minimalistic and recyclable. The sticky labels could cause a problem with that. Does anyone know of a good way to handle this requirement? Our volume will be low to start and manual is not a problem. Options as far as I can tell are:

    - Label printer/date gun of some sort. (This might cause recycling issues)

    - Handheld printer - Looking at something like THIS PRINTER.

Does anyone have any suggestions on the above options or new options/ideas? If you are familiar with the handheld printers, any advice you have would be great.

    Deep Work by Cal Newport

If you are looking for a book that will drastically shift your way of thinking regarding getting stuff done, Deep Work by Cal Newport is the book for you.

    The Premise of the Book

Would you like to know the formula for success in your life? The secret is 'Deep Work', a concept introduced in Cal Newport's bestselling book "Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World".

Deep work is "the ability to exercise extreme concentration on important activities that help you achieve your personal and professional aims, and to perform these activities fast and effectively." The ability to perform deep work is so important to your success—and to all success for that matter—that Cal Newport describes it as a superpower.

    To quote Cal Newport,

"What we choose to focus on and what we choose to ignore—plays in defining the quality of our life."

To utilize the concept of deep work, you also need to be aware of shallow work, the opposite of deep work. Cal Newport defines shallow work as tasks of less importance or that have no real impact on your productivity.

Engaging in shallow work (instead of deep work) is a productivity killer that will see you only appear to be productive with nothing to show for it. When a large portion of your day's work consists of shallow work—emailing, meetings, social media, etc.–the results are reduced productivity and ineffectiveness in your undertakings.

"If you don't produce, you won't thrive—no matter how skilled or talented you are."

    Cal Newport

The premise of Deep Work is that when you start scheduling uninterrupted periods of work into your daily work routine, you will experience increased focus on the things that matter the most to you, and an immense amount of productivity, motivation, and grit.

Here is a summary of the key lessons you can expect to learn from reading and implementing the productivity strategies discussed in Deep Work. Cal Newport's book provides the following strategies as the best way to perform deep work:

Lesson 1: Engage in deep work

Here is the secret to productivity: "to become productive, you have to commit to being productive; you have to commit to doing productive work. To perform deep work and get into a state of productive flow, create habits and rituals that make you effective and productive.

To get into deep work, whenever you have an important task to complete, one that is productive and helpful to achieving your aims, immerse yourself in monastic work by creating distraction-free work periods—you can work in 25-minute blocks (Pomodoro technique) and dedicate as many as four hours to deep work per day or week).

Cal Newport puts it this way: "If you service low-impact activities, therefore, you're taking away time you could be spending on higher-impact activities. It's a zero-sum game."

Lesson 2: Create routines around your success and completing deep work

Cal Newport puts it this way "The key to developing a deep work habit is to move beyond good intentions and add routines and rituals to your working life designed to minimize the amount of your limited willpower necessary to transform into and maintain a state of unbroken concentration."

Jim Ryun once said, "Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going." Therefore, to get into a state of deep work Cal Newport was referring to above, your routines or habits must be complementary to "unbroken concentration" or deep work.

The best way to turn your work into routines and habits is by scheduling blocks of deep work into your daily work routine. The more focused you become, the more deeply and productively you will work. To create deep work routines, embrace "scheduled timeouts from social media" and keep at bay all manners of distractions—consistently checking your phone, email, online videos, etc.—by batching similar tasks into an effective routine. Aim to work through all tasks and problems in blocks of time and to develop the ability to discern the important from the not so.

"To succeed with deep work you must rewire your brain to be comfortable resisting distracting stimuli."

    Cal Newport

    Conclusion

This summary doesn't discuss everything that Newport talks about but the concept he talks about is literally life changing if implemented. But to summarize it all; start scheduling your time appropriately, first to tasks that matter and engaging in deep work, and then to other, less important things, shallow work. That is how you shall master your time and achieve personal and professional success.

As Cal Newport even points out:

"Treat shallow work with suspicion because its damage is often vastly underestimated and its importance vastly overestimated. This type of work is inevitable, but you must keep it confined to a point where it doesn't impede your ability to take full advantage of the deeper efforts that ultimately determine your impact."

    Gift cards / Scrip fundraising?

    Posted: 06 Apr 2019 11:07 AM PDT

I have a new idea that I would like to try that is in the gift card resale business, specifically related to Scrip fundraising (where gift cards are sold on the behalf of schools and they receive a percentage of the profits back to help fund education).

Both working in the education space for a long time and the father of three supporting education is important to me. I don't know where to begin though with regards to volume purchasing of gift cards at discounted prices so that I can actually make a profit. Obviously, this is possible as Scrip fundraising in itself is not a unique idea; hoping someone on here knows a bit about the space.

    Facebook Ads...Anyone?

Hey all, I am just now starting to learn about facebook ads and could use some help some clarification. Do you build LAA, and custom groups only once you build traffic to your site?

    Would a good start/layout be:

    1. Identify cold target audience by researching your product i.e demographics, interests.
    2. Build Testing adds based off research. Start with 3 add sets at $5.
    3. Run best add sets using some vertical scaling and in CBO.
    4. Create LAA on best performing adds

Did I miss something? Would you try, take away or add something?

How do I revive and relaunch a brand?

    Posted: 06 Apr 2019 12:38 AM PDT

From about 5 years, I ran a some what niche bag line. What made it unique, is that we had a really simple design and the leather was top notch. I don't want to dismiss my design skills but the leather sold the bag.

About 3 years ago life got in the way and then my brother got terminal cancer. It was just too hard to run this brand at that time. I put all my focus on running my anonymous SEO ventures and did some freelancing. I still miss the creative hands on process.

I just checked my analytics and still get approx 500 visits per month and a couple email/messages on when the bag will be back in stock. I feel that it is now or never to revive and relaunch. My dormant facebook pages and instagram have about 5K followers between them so I would not be starting from scratch.

There's a brand of similar quality that had a very successful kickstarter but the kickstarter campaign seems to involve a lot of work and maybe not a good idea for a small trial run of 50-60 bags. Anyone have kickstarter experience with wisdom to share. Or maybe facebook ads? Any advice appreciated.

Carbon fiber dipping products to resell, is it over saturated?

    Posted: 06 Apr 2019 07:50 AM PDT

    Hey all,

This is my first post here as I'm starting to get my gears running. What I think may be an over saturated market, others may not. But I had this idea in my head of carbon fiber dipping random products and marking up the prices a bit to make a somewhat decent profit. I'm just not sure if carbon fiber is still all the talk. Obviously my market to this would be anything automotive related. Even dumb shit like pens and blank keys.

    What do you guys think?

    Thank you.
