I want to buy a vacant lot in another state & keep it vacant. Will there be any liability for me?

    Posted: 24 Apr 2019 06:19 AM PDT

I'm from HI. We moved to WA because here we can afford to buy a house while having decent paying jobs. My dream is to move back to HI and retire in my 50s (so 25-30ish years). I'm from a more rural area where land is still cheap and want to buy a lot there. I think the area will become very expensive, like most of the state, within my lifetime and want to get ahead of that.

What legal issues will I face if I own an undeveloped property I can't/ won't visit regularly?

[TX] I got bit pretty badly by my cat, but my mom (who has primary custody) refuses to take me to a doctor of any kind.

    Posted: 24 Apr 2019 06:39 AM PDT

I can understand that doctors are expensive, but this is ridiculous. I was bitten by this cat yesterday, and today the bite is slightly swollen and is still leaking blood. Literally anyone who sees it would say I need a doctor, but my mom refuses to take me to one.

I've looked it up online, and 9/10 sources say that cat bites need antibiotics and I'm kinda worried about getting an infection. This is also not our cat, we have had it for only 2 or 3 months and do not have it's vaccination records.

Also while on that note, my mother is something of an anti vaxxer. In my childhood she would flip out every time my dad got me a vaccination and I know for a fact that it's been quite a few years since I've gotten a shot of any kind. She's pretty stereotypical and owns essential oils and healing crystals. She has tried to put epsom salt and shit on the bite but I've refused.

Is there anything that I can do at all? If I do get an infection or worse, could this be labeled as neglect or something like that?

Edit: I have been able to get a ride to a nearby clinic, and I'll most likely get some antibiotics. My mom still seems to think that this is relatively minor and undeserving of an ER trip. I have screenshotted and sent some of the advice here but I'll just have to wait until we get to the clinic to find out whether or not this bite is serious enough to warrant a full visit and not just some pills.

    Also while I'm at it;

The school nurses were no help whatsoever

The bite is swollen, still bleeding, and I'm getting discoloration beneath my fingernail. I've had some people say that this strongly suggests an infection.

The cat is an indoor and usually very tame cat. However, we don't have its shot records because it was dumped off on us by a different family who took a trip to China.

    Another quick edit;

My mom decided that this wasn't all that urgent and isn't going to take me anywhere until after work. Which is 4-5 hours from now. I'm working on getting a different ride sooner, but I have very few options. I might be stuck waiting.

    Last edit;

Looks like the post got locked, but thank you all for the great advice. I've got a ride and a backup all lined up, and I'll get antibiotics soon. I've also gotten the cat's shot records and it's up to date on its rabies vaccines and the like. Again, thanks for all the great advice and nice comments, it was really great to be able to go through them all today while I waited.

Wife moved out while I was work, won't let me see my son now.

    Posted: 24 Apr 2019 05:57 AM PDT

Hi, new to reddit. Need advice on what do to please..

My wife and I haven't been getting along for awhile. I work nights and came home Saturday morning to a house with only my bed and sectional. My wife while I was at work moved out and took everything. I called her and she came over later that day and agreed to move back in if we went to marriage counseling. Went back to work that night expecting to come home and her and my son to be moved back in. Well i'm assuming with the influence of her family, they talked her out of it because she decided not to move back in and is now refusing to come to the house. Now she is pretty much refusing me to let me see my son. She doesn't respond to my text and when I call her she only wants to meet at a park after work so I can see my son for like 20 min. She refusing to let me take him for several hours, ect. I thought about picking him up from daycare but she took my key to get into the daycare. Also her mother works at the daycare and may refuse to let me take him.

My question is what is my legal right to see my son and pick him up from day care if I want to spend time with him while she is at work. And what is my legal right to all the stuff she took from my house?

    Also I live in Illinois.

[Update and more questions] Im an adult and my father put a GPS tracker on my car that he refuses to remove

Theres good news and bad new and another question. Also obligatory Philadelphia to please the bots.

I got the restraining order due to a past history of physical abuse.

But he denied putting a GPS in my car. I had a mechanic look at my car and he was unable to find a tracker. I've taken my car two 3 mechanics and they all found no tracker. I firmly believe that he is tracking me somehow but I am completely unsure of how. What can I do?

[IA] Builder raised property next to me so rain drains to my property

    Posted: 24 Apr 2019 04:05 AM PDT

I live in Cedar Rapids IA. Last year I bought a house that had no houses to the South of me for about a block. A few months after that, someone bought all the empty lots and started to build several new duplexes. This has been fine except that they brought in fill dirt and now parts of their property line are significantly higher than mine. My house is old and the area around my house is pretty flat so I do not have the best system to remove water from close to my house. We have not had any problems with water getting into the basement on that side of the house but I am worried that the extra water funneled to my house by the neighbors will start causing problems.

Do I have have any right to make them add a trench line or something that would funnel the rain to the street instead of to me?

Person I know being threatened for child support for kids that aren't his or related to him.

    Posted: 24 Apr 2019 07:25 AM PDT

I've got a friend who has a girlfriend that he has been with for 4 years. She has two kids aged 11 and 8. They have lived with him this entire time, under his roof with him paying food bills etc. The mom has a job but probably makes minimum wage, not nearly enough to provide for them.

Things are getting rocky, and he wants to leave. There have been threats from the girlfriend like "those are YOUR KIDS, you've been taking care of them so far you are now on the hook you cant just abandon them".

Ive been researching something called paternity by estoppel but i dont think it would directly apply.

Could she have a case? I know that child support is a finnickey thing when it comes to genetic relation, is there any senario where he could potentially be on the hook to maintain their lifestyle if she pushed hard enough?

[PA] bought a house less than a month ago and the sewage that “passed inspection” needs to be replaced.

    Posted: 24 Apr 2019 07:03 AM PDT

My husband and I bought our first home on 3/15/2019 and moved in on 3/30. Since moving in we've had a plumber at the house to snake the drain due to it backing up into our basement 3 times. Last night he came and attempted to scope it to see what the issue may be. The scope going from the yard towards the house showed that the pipes badly need to be replaced. He was completely unable to scope it the other way towards the street as he tried for two hours and couldn't get the camera through the trap. He said 1. It is highly unlikely that this portion of the drain was scoped recently, 2. What portion he could see should not have passed inspection and it is impossible that it's only gotten to that point in one month and 3. The only alternate entry point (in the house) according to him has not been opened in years.

In our township, by law, to obtain a U&O the seller must have the lateral sewage inspected. I called the township who gave me the number for the plumbing company who did the inspection. They told me it was done March 8th and passed without any outstanding remarks. Of course the township came out and checked their end of things and whatever the issue is is on our end leaving us financially responsible to replace all of the pipes from the house to the street.

Not sure where to start here or if there's anything we can do, happy to provide any additional info.

Neighbourhood kids keep throwing large sticks at my dog and their parents don’t take it seriously

    Posted: 24 Apr 2019 02:17 AM PDT

I'd like to start with some background to give the situation more context. I live in Australia in a area that is heavily populated by people who've migrated from South Asia to study and start family's. I love my Street and have never had any issues with neighbours until I adopted my dog 9 months ago who's an ex racing greyhound.

Many of my neighbours have told me they're scared of dogs because they grew up where there's packs of wild street dogs. Some of the first generation kids who haven't grown up in the same situation though seem to really hate dogs, they'll spit and yell at him while we're walking.

My dog is very large for his breed and I completely understand how he could scare people. Because I know people around here don't like dogs I always make sure I move my dog and step to the side of the pathway while passing people. He's really well behaved is always on his leash of course and doesn't go near anyone.

There's a park a few houses down that's dog friendly (has dog bowls on the base of the water fountains etc). It's always crawling with kids but my dog is much more interested in sniffing the ground than them. Today while I was walking my dog in the park a girl around 5 or 6 picked up a large stick and threw it at my dog but missed, she then picked up the same stick and threw it again and hit my dog hard in the stomach. My dog jumped and cowered in fear. This isn't the first time she and her brother have done this but never this hard and they usually miss my dog thankfully.

I ended up yelling at her and asked where he parents were. I went up to and asked the only adults in the park who the girls parent was and one said he was. I told him what happened and that it had happened previously and he and his friends called the girl over but just kind of laughed and smiled at me. I just told them it wasn't ok and left to make sure my dog wasn't hurt.

I'm not sure what to do honestly but I have a right to use the park alongside them, it's the only park in the area that isn't a half hour walk away.

(KY) Customer Trying to get a phone account in disabled sons name.

    Posted: 24 Apr 2019 06:55 AM PDT

I'm Co-owner of an authorized dealership of a major cell phone company. Yesterday afternoon one of my employees called and told me a woman was trying to get an account in her disabled sons name. The son was present but seemed to not understand that this would be his account and he would be responsible for it. This woman wants 4 phones on this account. I made an excuse for not being able to finalize the activation yesterday and told her to come back tomorrow (today). I contacted my rep and he said he would get back to me but has not at this point. I do not feel comfortable doing this contract, but i also do not want to be sued for discrimination. Is there anything i can do?

I think my orthodontist scammed me with "Invisalign".

    Posted: 23 Apr 2019 08:06 PM PDT

I started (what I believed was) Invisalign back in December. My orthodontic paperwork/contract says Invisalign. My orthodontist's website says Invisalign. Even their telephone hold music/voiceover talks about Invisalign. But when I contacted Invisalign about a problem I've been having with my trays (they're uncomfortably tight on my gums and causing recession), they couldn't locate my patient ID. Turns out I don't have one, because my orthodontist isn't actually treating me with Invisalign. He's treating me with 3M Clarity Aligners instead.

The Invisalign rep was pretty troubled by this situation. She took down my orthodontist's name and number and reported him to their investigation department. She also had me email her photos of the paperwork I received and signed that included the Invisalign logo. As for next steps, she advised me to reach out to my orthodontist and ask him how this happened. I did so this morning, and the receptionist seemed confused. She called me back an hour later, said my orthodontist was out with a family emergency, but told me another orthodontist at the practice said they sometimes use Invisalign, sometimes use 3M. This wasn't ever communicated to me when I signed my paperwork and took all the first steps for my treatment. I was under the impression that I was being treated with Invisalign until today. Their website doesn't mention 3M Clarity Aligners. It only mentions Invisalign. Furthermore, the consent form I signed clearly specifies Invisalign and nothing else.

My question is: Should I seek an attorney? If so, what kind? Do I have a case with this situation? I'm on tray 13/14, and my teeth are not yet straight. In fact, I have more problems now than I did in the beginning (my gums have receded, my bite is off). At my last appointment, my orthodontist told me I'd need a second set of refinement trays. I'm hesitant to receive any further treatment from him, though.

I'm expecting my orthodontist to call me back within the next few days. In the meantime, I appreciate any guidance/insight you all can provide!

Edit: I am located in Virginia.

Edit: Thanks for all your advice. I'm going to try to come to a solution with my orthodontist before taking any further action, but it's helpful to have an idea of where to go from here (if necessary).

(FL) My friend is being blackmailed for a crime he commited 12 years ago

    Posted: 24 Apr 2019 01:13 PM PDT

As the title says, I'm asking for advice for a friend of mine, who will be called Bob, confided in me some financial trouble he's in right now.

12 years ago, when Bob was 16, he was living on the streets and got mixed up with a bad group. He was shoplifting and such to get food to survive and live. Eventually the group apparently decided they needed money to survive and robbed a local deli truck driver for cash and food. Bob acted as a lookout/distractor for the operation so wasn't masked or diaguised in any way. They left and nothing ever happened from it all.

Fast forward 11 years and the husband and wife who owned the deli truck have apparently been stalking Bob. They finally found him alone after work late-2017 and told him they knew he was the one that robbed them 12 years ago and they wanted payback. They held him at gunpoint and said they would kill him and his children if they didn't get what they want. For the past year or so, Bob has been meeting with these people once or twice a month to buy things for them and give them cash. He estimates he has spent nearly $10,000 so far in all of this, but they won't leave him alone. He wants to go to the police but is afraid of being arrested for the robbery he did 12 years ago. What should he do here? Could he be arrested for that crime even though its been so long since it happened?

The wood shed has to go!

    Posted: 24 Apr 2019 09:00 AM PDT

Hi all. I'm in South Central Michigan.

When I purchased my land three years ago, I noticed during the survey that the neighbors have a wood shed/storage processing shed on my property adjoining theirs. They use it weekly and burn wood for heat.

It is a post-type building no walls just a lien-to style roof.

It's time.. it has to go.
I understand some of the legalities but want to make sure my plan was not going to get myself in my own way of getting this done.

I planned to asked them to move it and explain it is on my property. Heck, I would even volunteer to help with it.

Take pics of it first, they go try the neighborly route. This is where I need advise to make sure in the event I need to bulldoze the thing that I haven't screwed up.

[PA] I was fired because my doctor's office lost my paperwork

    Posted: 24 Apr 2019 09:39 AM PDT

    Location is Pennsylvania

I have been on FMLA (Family and Medical Leave Act) for a few years. Every six months, I have to submit paperwork to renew my case, and some of the packet must be filled out by my doctor. This has not been a problem up until this year. In January, I submitted my paperwork to my doctor's office as usual, expecting to receive a filled out packet a few days later like I had done many times before. After a few days, I called to check the status of the paperwork, and was told they had not yet completed it. I continued to call and visit every few days after that only to be told the same. I filed for an extension on the paperwork through Cigna to give my doctor more time, and continued to pester them about getting it done.

Five weeks after initially handing the paperwork to my doctor, I received a call saying they had lost the paperwork. I had to call Cigna to get a second packet to send to my doctor. After giving the second packet to my doctor, they returned it to me a week later with some portions of the packet left blank. I gave it back to the doctor and personally waited in the office while it was filled out. By the time the completed paperwork was submitted to Cigna, the deadline had passed and my FMLA case was closed. During this entire ordeal, I had missed several days of work due to panic attacks that would have been covered by FMLA. I eventually got my case reopened, but there is a period of time where all work missed was not covered by FMLA.

I was fired from my job because of the days missed during that period of time. I feel as though I lost my job because of my doctor's office's neglect. Could I have a case for compensation against the doctor or doctor's office?

I hosted a party this weekend where I gave my friends vegan child meat.

    Posted: 23 Apr 2019 08:07 PM PDT

Hello, this weekend I threw a backyard party where we barbecued. I cooked up several things but the main entrees were beef and chicken. one of the children at my party belongs to a vegan family, I have been told in the past that they are vegan but I didn't really think much about it because I don't know many vegans.

When serving everybody food their 13 year old son took consumed a cheeseburger. When he took it I thought to myself "I thought he was vegan" but figured he had changed his lifestyle.

There was a vegetable platter available and non-meat options as far as snacks go.

after the party his mother called me ability livid, and threatened to sue me.

Do I need to worry about anyting?

I think my missing cat is being given or sold in a Facebook group. Location KY

    Posted: 24 Apr 2019 07:26 AM PDT

I've been missing my cat for a week now. I checked a Facebook group this morning, that give animals away for free. There was a post with a picture that has a cat that looks identical to my Archer. He's half Maine coon, and he's easy to distinguish.

In her post she said she was given this cat to her from her friend. When asked about vet records and other medical history, she replied that she doesn't know if they have any records at all.

I've messaged her and an admin from the group, but no reply. If she won't give me my cat back or if she already gave it to someone and they don't want to give them back, what are my options? Will I be able to get him back if this cat is indeed him?

My cat is microchipped. I'm calling the animal shelter that I adopted him from when they open. I have his vet records and his adoption papers.

No A/C in my apartment. It will be a long hot summer

    Posted: 24 Apr 2019 06:52 AM PDT

I live in an apartment in Philadelphia, PA. It gets hot and very humid in the summers. My landlord just informed us that the central air conditioning is broken, and won't be repaired for months. Which means for the majority of the summer and the last couple months of my lease, I will not have air. My roommate and myself have been fed up for the majority of the time we've lived here due to delayed repairs.

I was wondering if there is anything within my legal right that I can do about the situation, such as withholding rent or anything.

I just want to know where I stand in this position. Thanks to everyone in advance!

    False Mental Inquest Warrant

    Posted: 24 Apr 2019 03:53 AM PDT

As the title says, my son is 18 and was at his grandparents house on Easter. Son's father came in to start an argument with his 70 year old mother. 18yr old stepped between them and told his dad to get out. Words were exchanged and then my son told him to do something about it, his father threw and elbow and son punched him three times. There was nothing done at the time police were not involved and they stayed away from one another. I'm not going to lie, his eye is swollen shut.

Three days later son's father decides to file an EPO with the event stating lies about what happened. He also filed a Mental Inquest Warrant, again fraudulent and my son was just picked up about 10:30pm and taken to be evaluated. I haven't heard from him since, and need to know what recourse we may have. I do not live in Kentucky, but this is where things have taken place. I can get there if anyone thinks that will help, honestly kind of lost here.

Edit to add: Grandparents were witnesses to the event and willing to testify on behalf of grandson.

Sold my motorcycle on Craigslist, gentleman claims I sold him a broken bike and is stopping check.

    Posted: 24 Apr 2019 08:31 AM PDT

[USA-CA]Hello everyone, yesterday a very kind old gentleman and his son came to look at my SV1000 that I had for sale. They came, looked at it, turned it on, asked me a few questions, and wrote me a check.

It was probably the smoothest transaction I have ever experienced. I offered the gentleman to ride the motorcycle around the block to see how he felt but he said he didn't want to, that he believed me that there was nothing going on with the motorcycle. And to my knowledge and expertise there was nothing wrong with it. It only have 27k miles and was well maintained by me and a previous owner who was a Suzuki tech.

He sends me a text at 1 am saying the following:

/u/zeecok, we put the mufflers on the bike , turned it on and the engine on this bike has a bad knock or rattle inside, I have put a stop payment on check, please call me in the morning to discuss and make arrangements on returning bike to your place.

Now I am not concerned over a scam as I have documents with his ID and full legal name, photos of his license plate, and photos of his sons license plate. But I am not in the business in making a return, as when I sold the bike it was running at tip top shape, and when to his understanding at the time of transaction, it was also in tip top shape. To my knowledge, after the money was exchanged, documents were signed over and the property exchanged, the contract has been completed and the other party can not rescind. If I am incorrect, please someone let me know.

What do you think I can do? I don't want this to escalate to court. Is there any way I can cash the check if I explain to the bank the circumstances? I gave him a call to his request, and he said he is going to ride it around more to see if there is a problem.

Canada - Illegally lived abroad my whole life

    Posted: 24 Apr 2019 09:54 AM PDT

Sometime in the 90s, my parents who have never been canadian citizens were visiting family in Canada (family is Chinese, some aunts and grandma became canadian citizens at the time) and during that visit, I was born on Canadian soil.

So my birth certificate is Canadian but my parents were already living down south and because they were poor, they didn't want to pay a foreign fees for me and lied on their way back to Mexico saying "This baby was born in Mexico" and I don't even know how they got away with it but people let it pass and she got a Mexican birth certificate for me so I could study here without needing a Canadian permission and now I have two birth certificates. Anyway, of course, as I was growing up I did not know any of this, I was a kid but as I grew up and planned to move to Canada, it started to become clear that I've been illegally living in Mexico my whole life.

If I try to move to Canada, will I get punished there for living abroad illegally? A huge tax debt? Can I still get a SIN?

(California) fired for interviewing for another job. No final check, no reimbursements.

    Posted: 24 Apr 2019 11:21 AM PDT

I am (was) in account management as a salary employee. I was verbally informed by my manager that I was terminated. There were no witnesses, there was no paperwork for me to review or sign, and I did not receive a final paycheck.

Now, I understand that California is an "at-will" state so they can fire me for any reason and at any time, but there are labor codes being violated here that I am curious about.

It has been 2 days and I haven't heard from any company representatives and no check has come in the mail. I still have outstanding business expenses that need to be reimbursed and they blocked me out of the reporting system so I can't file for the expense reimbursement. I have the company vehicle still on my property and I have been given no information to show the county in order to apply for benefits.

I have E-mailed HR and received no response. This company is based outside of CA and I feel that they might be imparting their State's labor laws over my CA labor laws.

Can someone tell me what violations are being made and what I can do about it?

    Thanks

Someone hacked my Domino's account and spent $200

    Posted: 24 Apr 2019 12:25 PM PDT

Hi all. On my Domino's account I have both my debit card and my boyfriend's saved. You can't see the numbers on the cards, just the last 4 digits, but if you have access to the account you can use the cards for your order. Someone hacked my account and made several orders, totaling around $200, in New York and New Jersey during the last 2 days (I'm from CA). My bank's fraud center called me and asked if I made those purchases, I said no, and they cancelled my card and sent me a new one. I realized that it came from my Dominos account and it seemed that after my card declined they used my boyfriend's (he is from DC so I guess his bank didn't catch it). I deleted all cards from my account and changed the password, but am I justified in calling the police on these people? I have the addresses of all the locations they ordered food to and I have the phone numbers for the stores they ordered from.

[Quebec and Texas] Wife went US to See Family for a week with 11 month old son. Just told me she filed for divorce and isn't coming back

My wife and I were married in Texas two years ago. I'm Canadian, She's American. We had a child 11 months ago in Texas, and moved to Quebec Canada. Child is both Canadian and American. She was going through immigration paperwork for permanent residency. I signed a travel permission for a week visit for my son to go visit family in US. She just told me she filed for divorced in Texas 30 days ago and I will be served papers tomorrow. They aren't coming back. What do I do? Do I file child abducting in Quebec? Do I hire lawyers here, or in Texas, or both? My son is my life, I can't imagine living without him. I'm shattered and scared.
