I am a teacher who is having a baby over the summer. I want to use my sick leave and then take an unpaid leave of absence, but HR is trying to tell me I can't use my sick leave. Please advise. (Indiana)

    Posted: 26 Apr 2019 08:28 AM PDT

I have accrued 19 paid personal/sick days, and have an additional 15 in the sick bank. I am having my baby over summer, and intend to take the full year off. As it was explained to me, I need to take this as a "leave of absence." The Assistant Superintendent of HR said something along the lines of "they need to hire a temp for a year, and if I take sick leave they have to fill it with a sub, and then getting a temp will be hard." And something about not being able to pay for both a temp and me on leave at the same time...

I don't see why they can't hire the temp, use them as the sub for the first two months, and then change their status to temp and pay them accordingly. They are essentially telling me I can't claim over $4000 by using my sick/personal leave, which I obviously need since this is unpaid leave for a year. I feel like they are trying to just save money and avoid doing the paperwork.

Any advice for a confused Indiana teacher?

EDIT: I have spoken to my union rep, btw. She is looking into the situation and knows my side of the story.

    Doxxed by Twitch Streamer

    Posted: 26 Apr 2019 06:39 AM PDT

A few nights ago while watching Twitch.TV, a Twitch streamer intentionally read out loud and then posted into their chat, my full name and email address which is also known as doxxing to 3,000+ viewers. In general, doxxing someone is generally malicious in intent but the streamer told their chat to "Fuck him up" inciting violence against me.

Since then, I have had to migrate any and all accounts off of that email address as its now not usable (getting mass spammed by emails) and have had to private majority of my social media accounts. My Mother as well as my place of work has been contacted multiple times each by random individuals.

Although Doxxing is against Twitch's TOS, my understanding is that it is not illegal in the US. I have been informed that in New Zealand where the streamer lives, it is illegal.

What action, if any, can be taken against the Streamer? If yes, can it be done without going to New Zealand?

What action, if any, can be taken against Twitch? Twitch has not responded to the many forms on contact I have tried with them.

    EDIT: Adding context

Since people keep bringing it up. Lets add context as much we I can without breaking the rules. Streamer shoots an individual in a game for trespassing. After over an hour of streamer talking about the exchange that just happened trying to justify their actions. I donate the message "I hope you never step on land you dont own. You may catch a bullet in the head. LUL" referring to the exchange that just happened. The streamer somehow took this as a real life death threat. Instead of reporting it to the police, or twitch... They doxxed me. I would have been so much happier if they went to the police. It was a misunderstanding that could have been sorted. They cant undo doxxing me.

Previous owner took the tree from our front yard

    Posted: 26 Apr 2019 05:17 AM PDT

So I just moved to Wilmington in Delaware from Melbourne Australia, I moved into the house a couple days ago and had the final inspection the day before. During the final inspection there was a tree in the front yard but when we came around to sign the contract the tree was gone, the old owner took heaps of small things like that from towel racks to mirrors to most of the light bulbs. Did she do anything illegal? or do I just have to replace those things because they were gone before the signing of the contract. Thanks

Proffesor failing me due to disability

    Posted: 26 Apr 2019 09:56 AM PDT

So I'm in my freshman year of college in Montana and am in a class where I have just about an 100% as a grade but due to chronic illness I have missed 13 classes out of the 10 aloud misses. I gave him a doctors note on the first day of class that said I will miss a lot of classes and the university had approved to exempt me from attendance based classes. He is refusing to take this into consideration and is a horrible individual over all. He makes disgusting comments in class such as how it's nearly impossible to get fired and that he MAYBE would get fired for molesting our whole class. After this disturbing comment I went to his office hours by myself where he told me to get pumped full of steroids and get over my illness and show up like a normal student. What can I do? I feel very helpless, is this considered discrimination? Can I go to the university and take action against the professor?

    Edit: Location

Edit 2: For those commenting, I visited the school before classes started for semester and was registered with disability services. They are aware of my situations and send out emails to the professors saying that attendance shouldn't be counted in my specific case as long as I am passing the course in all other aspects. This is another thing that he is ignoring.

    Ebay Stole my Money.

    Posted: 26 Apr 2019 06:00 AM PDT

I have been selling stuff on Ebay for some time but when i tried to log into my account yesterday it said i had been blocked. The reason they gave me was that i sent rude messages to my customers (which i didn't do). So i asked them for proof, and they said they are not allowed to look at my messages. So Ebay blocked me without any proof that i did something wrong. So now I lost my account with 200+ 5 star feedback and they are keeping the money that still had to be transferred to me (this money was from products i sold and have already shipped). Is there anything i can do to get my account and my money back? (The Netherlands )

    Thanks for the help.

My old sim card is bugged, giving me unlimited internet access and calls

    Posted: 26 Apr 2019 02:57 AM PDT

About a year ago I found an old sim card in my drawer (vodafone). I needed this sim card for a vodafone portable wifi box, it uses mobile data and gives you internet access you just need to top up the sim card. Well it turns out that I did not need to top up anything as I had internet access as soon as I turned it on. The thing is, the sim card in the wifi box is prepaid, which means that it needs to be topped up in order to be used. So I have not been paying bills for it or topping it up. There is 0 credit on the sim card and whenever I try to login or top up it gives me an error. I have been using this sim card for over a year now. It works in europe and also gives me free calls. So far I have used over 200 gb of data over the past year. Can I get in trouble if I keep using this sim card? I am from ireland

Former employer is attempting to sue me over allegedly stealing dog grooming clients info and harassing potential new employers.

    Posted: 26 Apr 2019 06:49 AM PDT

I have worked for a grooming shop in eastern Pennsylvania for almost 8 years. Within the past year the owners sons took over and have created a very stressful work environment. I finally got fed up and quit as did the grooming manager. I was supposed to start working with a new grooming shop a few miles down the road from my former shop. I have clients that want to follow me which I contacted and informed them where I would be working. My former employer found out about this and sent me a cease and desist letter stating I needed to return the clients contact info, stop contacting any clients and report any money I made off of them. They also called the place I was going to be working at and told them their lawyers would be contacting them. The new shop was not happy about this and felt they were being threatened. However they were still going to hire me. Then a few days later they received a letter from my former employers lawyer. I do not know what it says but they said they couldn't hire me until this was taken care of. The day after I received my letter I got a phone call from the local police station. The officer told me my former employer had stopped in and was trying to press criminal charges against me but admitted to the cop that nothing physically had been stolen. I told the cop my side of the story and he said that since nothing was missing from the shop no charges would be filed. I responded to the cease and desist letter stating that I did not steal any records from them. Any contact information I have on clients I was able to obtain from the internet. I did not sign a non compete clause so I can work wherever I want and I can inform clients of where I will be working. As for any money I have made I have not started working yet so I have nothing to claim. But because of my former employers threatening call and letter I may not be getting that job. I suggested at the end of the letter that if they didn't have any proof that I committed anything illegal that they just drop this. Anyway so my question is do they have any grounds to sue me on and can I sue them for interfering with my ability to get a new job?

Hunters Trespassing on Private Property (OH)

    Posted: 26 Apr 2019 10:29 AM PDT

I have recently found that over the winter several hunters have trespassed onto my property and placed blinds, stands, and cameras. Can I legally remove these items? It is not property that anyone lives at, so it is difficult to see when they come and go. What recourse do I have?

My underage sister has an open investigation into her nude photos being spread at school, but the officer in charge of her investigation is harassing her and her guardian is doing nothing about it. Is there anything I can do to report the officer and possibly the guardian? (CA)

    Posted: 26 Apr 2019 11:00 AM PDT

TLDR: Underage sister's nudes got leaked, police were involved and a case is open to find who is still sending them around. However, her Guardian and the Officer believe she sent the photos herself, so not much is getting done for her. The Officer only watches her conversations online with me and friends, then reports that to Guardian. The Officer also made a lewd sexual comment about my sister, and Guardian did nothing about it. I am in another state, but would like to help. What are my options for reporting the Officer and seeing what else can be done for my sister?

Throwaway account for privacy, and my apologies for a long post. For reference, I am active duty military and stationed in another state, so I can't physically do anything. Without too much detail, my sister is in high school and sent nude photos/videos to her now ex online. A friend of hers had her login info and sent those photos/videos to a few people, then threatened to send them out further after my sister called her out on it. This all happened at the end of last year. (Sister, Ex, and Friend are all minors).

My sister went to her guardian and reported it to the police. I'm not sure on all the details, but the police have started an investigation to find who else has the pictures as they're still circulating. Her guardian gave my sister's login info for multiple accounts to the Officer in charge of the investigation, supposedly to monitor who she's talking to in case they find anything about who is sending photos.

From what my sister told me, all the Officer does is read her conversations with me and some friends, then reports what we're talking about (all unrelated to the case) to her Guardian, while doing nothing about the photos. The Officer also made a lewd sexual comment to the Guardian about my sister after watching one of the videos, and her Guardian did nothing about it. Both the Guardian and the Officer think my sister is some kind of delinquent that spread the pictures herself for attention. Are there any options I could pursue in reporting the Officer for their actions? I only have their name.

A client has an outstanding bill for a ghostwriting project for months but still wants me to continue working on other agreed projects

    Posted: 26 Apr 2019 04:58 AM PDT

I'm a ghostwriter who tackles all sorts of writing, including commercial copy and ghostwriting books. About two years ago I wrote a book for a client that she was very happy with, working for a fixed price. She paid promptly and also got me to do some commercial writing for her business on the side. I was asked to work on another, much longer book and happily agreed. However, due to the project length I asked to be paid a monthly rate for my time as the amount of time the project was going to take partly depended on access for interviews, changing specifications to fit the business, etc.

The first six months went well on the writing side but payment was highly erratic. It took three months to get the first invoices paid and the client routed different parts of the payment through different companies that they ran. I wasn't too fussed where the money came from as long as it came. After the third month, I was told to direct all invoices to the financial director of a new startup she had set up. Payment became more erratic and the CFO explained that they were running short of their phase 1 funds and wouldn't be able to pay the last invoices I sent until phase 2 investment was secured.

By this point I had been paid for five months, sent in a full invoice for the next month, and then when that wasn't paid I only worked a half month and then a quarter month in the subsequent months, before downing tools entirely. That was 7 months ago now. In the meantime, the client has repeatedly confirmed that they owed me the money but has stated that they don't have the funds to pay. I know that this is true for the folded startup but the client herself is a multi-millionaire with other successful businesses, who often posts about luxury holidays she has taken on social media, just one of which would probably cover my outstanding costs.

Now, I understand that you don't get rich by risking your own money, but my agreement to write was with the client herself, not with one of her businesses. I would already have taken the matter to court if it wasn't for the fact that the publication of the first book was still in train and I am due a profit share from that. However, the success of the first book will depend on how much resources she puts into marketing it, so I didn't want to rock the boat yet. I also thought that her share of earnings from the first book could cover my outstanding costs.

I have been asked by the client to do some polishing work on the manuscript and hand it over to an agent who might fund the rest of the book and cover the back payments, but I am currently unwilling to do any active work on the project.

    Here are my questions:

First, if my outstanding payments are covered now, with invoices 7-9 months late, am I still contractually obliged to finish the book? I have written half of it but now have no confidence in the client and have shifted future work off my schedule. With my enthusiasm gone, I would really rather not return to the work, but if my invoices are finally paid, would that resurrect my contractual obligations?

Second, am I endangering any claim I have by allowing things to ride for so long? If I don't pursue court action by a certain point, do I lose the right to pursue that action?

Third, who owns the rights to the drafts I have completed so far? If the contract has been broken, do I have to turn over the chapters I have finished to the client for them to use as they please or do I retain ownership of them because the contract was broken?

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Edit: As the locationbot demands, I'm in the UK but my client is international. Most payments have been made to me through UK companies, but also some through a company in the US.

Was kayak fishing and got hit by a boat. He came back and I got his info, what should I do now?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2019 08:46 AM PDT

Yesterday I was kayak fishing on a big river where lots of people have fishing boats to fish for salmon. A guy in a boat didn't see me (I was in his vision from 200-300 yards away) and came right at me and clipped the back end of my boat. I flipped and lost my rod and reel, sunglasses, shoes and some other miscellaneous gear. Luckily I came out unscathed. He came back around fortunately and was really nice, felt really bad, and towed me back to the boat ramp (about a mile). I took pictures of his registration and drivers license. I'm not looking to give him the book, it seemed like an honest accident. What should I do?

Business wants me to pay for car insurance for the company

    Posted: 26 Apr 2019 06:45 AM PDT

I work for a small business in Kansas. Husband and wife own and operate, while 4-5 other guys actually do the work. We travel with Hazmat occasionally. Anyways, I got 3 points against me on my license which one point should be coming off anytime. While the other two should be off by January 2020.

This is the letter I received. I understand that I am high risk for insurance purposes. I've never signed anything stating I would pay for extra insurance. If I'm not on the insurance I wouldn't be able to drive and if I can't drive I don't have a job. It would probably be better if I wasn't related to the owners.

I was just wanted to know it was legal to for them to make me pay for my insurance plan.

My (23F) good friend from childhood (24F) has a genetic illness that leaves her disabled. She was raped, and now the rapist is contacting her again.

    Posted: 26 Apr 2019 07:59 AM PDT

Basically, what the title says. I know this is very dark, and hard to talk about, or even think about, so I appreciate any advice you have. She is severely disabled to where she could not defend herself at all. She was living in an adult care home when a man about 30 raped her. She doesn't want her grandma to know, who is her primary parental figure at this time (her mom died of the same disease she now has, and her dad is not as involved in her life).

Nothing happened at the time to remove him from the home, but then he later made a bomb threat and was put in jail for a while. My friend has now moved homes, and he is out of jail living in a city a few hours away.

He has now contacted her, telling her that he had raped a girl before her and apparently talking about how he is not forgiven, and he's done terrible things. I personally could not care less how he feels, and want him to never contact my friend again. My friend has had a hard life and she laughs about these things, because she just can't handle them mentally I think. This does not mean that she feels safe or is okay with it, however, as I know her well. I've known her since we were 5. She started getting sick around 3 years ago.

What organizations can I contact, or are their legal ways to ensure that he stays away? We must respect her wishes to not make this public knowledge, keeping the info away from her grandma. I understand why she wants to keep this secret, as her grandma lost both her kids to this same illness and now is losing her granddaughter. She wants to protect her grandma from any more heartbreak, or the chance that she might blame herself.

I've told my boyfriend about this, and he wants me to get his contact info so that he can call him anonymously from a payphone and threaten him to never speak to her again. I don't usually condone threats, but this is such a dark and sick situation, and maybe it would scare him. He said that if the man does contact her again, maybe he can get his picture and spread it around social media. Are there any ways we could get in trouble for this?

We both feel powerless in this situation and I hope that the Reddit community can offer some insight into ways we can help.

Utah - can an HoA ban ATV’s if they are street legal?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2019 08:19 AM PDT

My HoA has banned ATV's from being ridden in the neighborhood.

But if they are street legal vehicles, it seems it would be against the law.

    Or am I mistaken?

Once a week my nephews come over and ride my ATV's around the neighborhood. They are not reckless, and stay on the roads.

They really enjoy it so I would hate for them to lose that outlet on the weekends.

[Arkansas] I was paying child support for a child that never existed

    Posted: 26 Apr 2019 01:40 PM PDT

My ex-wife and I divorced two years ago. I was lead to believe she was five months pregnant at the time. We had an agreement (not legally) that I would pay her $250 every two weeks or $500 a month. I was not present at the birth but she sent me pictures of the baby. I did not get any visitations, only pictures. I've found out the child in the pictures is actually her niece's. I learned this through one of her aunts. Can I sue her for the money I paid?

My boyfriend has talked about kicking me out, but we are both on the lease

    Posted: 26 Apr 2019 08:18 AM PDT

    I am in PA.

My boyfriend of 10 years and I have been in an extended rough patch and things have come to a head. I am not currently planning on leaving nor is he, but he has threatened more than once to kick me out. He has also advised that he has apparently already discussed it with our landlord as a just in case scenario, and was told it would not be a problem to remove me from the lease...I don't know under what terms or what exactly they discussed, this was just his rebuttal when I told him he can't just kick me out since I am on the lease.

We just signed for another year in February and the lease renewed April 1st - we both signed electronically during the initial move in and for the renewal. Both of our names are stated on the lease and my boyfriend paid the deposit (about $3000) in installments during our move in period, the water/sewer are under the landlord's name (billed by the township quarterly), the trash is in my name (private company billed quarterly) and the electric has been in my boyfriend's name since several apts ago (PECO) - We do not have any joined assets, I pay all the utilities including electric and the full rent from my bank account, my boyfriend just sends me half the rent through a cash share app, I pay everything else in full.

Sorry if some of that was unnecessary information, I just want to clearly outline whose name is on what and who is paying what and confirm for my own piece of mind if I could actually be kicked out with no warning for no reason other than my boyfriend and I broke up (we are quiet, neat tenants and obviously my boyfriend would be staying in this hypothetical, so it's not like it would be an eviction, right?).

How can I be responsible for a bill when I was in high school?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2019 11:19 AM PDT

For backstory, I'll sum it up. My birth mother was terribly mentally and emotionally abusive. My brother got the physical part of her abuse because he looked like his father but that's not what's important right now. We both ended up leaving her when we could. He left when he was 18 and I left when I was 17 to live at a friends house. We live in Michigan so it was legal for me to move out of her house and go where I wanted so long as I didn't live with my father due to custody reasons. 🙄 it was a whole big mess that I'm glad has been over.

    Or so I thought.

Turns out for her petty revenge on me she put an electricity bill in my name with my social security number and everything else- but she didn't pay some part of it. I never knew until I received a letter in the mail a month or two ago from a debt collection agency that said I owe $661.49. It was marked for 2014-2016, which would be around the time I left her household and cut contact with her. Thing is, I was in high school around this time.

I already called them once to tell them this but because she had all the info she needed to put me as the main holder for the account, they told me I'm still going to be held accountable for it. They've since sent me another letter with a reduced amount to pay and I'm just fed up with it at this point.

My question here is can I honestly be held accountable for a bill when I was in high school? If so, what can I do to legally clear my name of it and the debt she's put under my name?

New landlord not giving me mailbox key?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2019 01:25 PM PDT

    Location - Baltimore, MD

My SO and I just moved into a new apartment building 2 weeks ago. We still hadn't been given our mailbox key a week in, and were finally able to get in contact with the property manager. She gave us a specific date that maintenance would be coming to drop off the key, as well as to fulfill a couple maintenance requests for broken things around the house. They never showed.

My boyfriend and I have been trying to contact them via email, cellphone, office phone, text. They have been completely unresponsive for over a week.

We both have important mail sitting in the mailbox that we do not have access to. It's extremely frustrating and we don't know what else to do! Our tiny mailbox is probably packed full at this point. And now that it's the weekend again our chances of getting the key before next week are slim.

Additionally, the fire alarm in the entire building has been going off nonstop for an entire week. They sent an email to all tenants promising that it would be fixed by the end of the day - this was 6 days ago! Still hasn't been fixed. This is not only an annoyance, but also a serious hazard.

Not having a good first impression with this property management company and am wondering if there's anything we can do about this?

15 year old daughter passed away

    Posted: 26 Apr 2019 06:43 AM PDT

My daughter passed away last Friday very suddenly. I was the one that found her in her room.

The crime scene investigator that processed the scene said she'd been doing her job for 15 years and that normally they would go through the entire house piece by piece, but that she could tell there was no foul play after just a few hours. She took my daughters phone, a tablet and a small bag out of her room. She said we'd have them back in a few days

Autopsy report gleaned no 'obvious' reasons for her death. Now they're doing a histology and a toxicology report to see if they can find out what happened.

My husband contacted the CSI on Monday and asked her if we could have my daughter's belongings back. She finally got back to us today. We have been out of town for a week now because the pain is too much to take at our home. She wanted to know when we'd be back so she can talk to us. She said she was going to my daughter's school to talk to her friend she'd seen the night before she passed, and she wanted permission to download the contents of my daughter's phone.

What do we do from here, if anything? The whole line of questioning is making me uncomfortable, but maybe I'm just paranoid. Do I need to get a lawyer? Do I just work with the investigator?

Got scammed out of an apartment in Copenhagen

    Posted: 26 Apr 2019 03:49 AM PDT

Hello there, I'm an icelandic man living with his french girlfriend and currently we are stuck homeless in Denmark because we rented an apartment from a facebook group. The man we approached sent us pictures of the apartment, and a contract which we signed. Then the day of our flight from France he ghosted us, mind you that we had already payed the deposit, and when we arrived at the appartment block he never picked up the phone or answered our messages. So today we went to a police station that unfortunately couldn't submit criminal charges, but the police officer said we had a strong case because we made a fake facebook account to catfish the scammer and we're negotiating for the same appartment now. Because the previous station couldn't help we had to go to the central police station but they said that because we had started negotiating the appartment in France that this is a french police problem. So now we're really stranded and out of options, with very little money as we're wrestling with my girlfriends bank to get the 870 euro check back.

Somebody used our address for their houses mortgage...

    Posted: 26 Apr 2019 09:28 AM PDT

Hi. I live in cook county, Illinois. Our address is very similar to that of our neighbors. The address is exactly the same besides a Street and a Place. This all started months ago when our neighbor told us a woman was on our property taking pictures of our house. Then one day we had a slip on paper put on our door that looked like an eviction notice. I don't remember exactly what it said but It something behind the lines of that we were back on our mortgage. We've called the company repeatedly and they've assured us they've fixed the problem each time. Except after every call there's been someone taking pictures of our house from the company. What do we do? It seems as if our neighbors took out a mortgage on their house, using our address. All the time we get packages and mail for them, with their name and our address. Over the years, we've had pizzas delivered, tons of landscaping rocks delivered onto our driveway, we've had trees cut down on our property from a landscaping company thinking that we were there house. None of that is really an issue to us, but we are concerned about this.

home owners association don’t want to fix 90 year old neighbors horrible sidewalk despite fixing every other part. san jose, ca

Reposting this to see if it'll get more attention. If i'm leaving info out please ask questions so I can add the info to the post. I'm not used to posting stuff like this. English also isn't my first language.

I live in an condo complex, two stories, it's a fairly nice neighborhood and the neighbors are okay. However, there is one apt that you'll hear causing the most noise, they fight a lot. I'll call them the NH (noise house).

Despite the fact that they fight a lot, I actually really love these neighbors, it's a group of older people living there (a 90 year old lady and two 70~ year olds) and I grew up with them listening to their stories when I was a kid, and they've actually helped us so much in the past, so to see this happening sorta sucks and I want to see if I could do anything? The other neighbors don't really like them or care this is happening (because of the fact they're noisy and fight, never mind that they're still good people) and I think whats happening is being done on purpose.

So NH lives on the first floor, and as soon as you go outside there's a step and then concrete floor. The floor, is very old and cracking and has a lot of horrible bumps in it, that's how it all used to look, until the homeowners association started to fix these floors. The first side they fixed, they did about 10~ years ago but it still looks better then the older one, then they recently did (about 2~ weeks ago) a different section. The thing is, they left out one part, the middle, and right in the middle of that is the NH. RIGHT where their property line starts and ends, is the old horrible floor. The 90 year old that lives there still walks, and uses a walker to get around, the concrete floor makes it so much harder for her to walk around safely because of how bad it looks. I feel like there's something unfair going on? I'm almost certain that the homeowners association wants to kick out the NH because they want to rent out of someone else. (someone "better") But of course I can't prove that. I'm giving them the benefit if the doubt and won't accuse them of anything to their face but I definitely want something to be done.

We sent a video and complaint to the association and they said that there weren't going to do anymore sidewalk repairs. Their reason was that the plans for the sidewalk were made by the old homeowners association, and the plans didn't include the sidewalk just in front of the NH. So they only did what was according to the plans.

May 8th theres going to be a meeting which I will attend with one of my neighbors so I can make them show me the plans that say to specifically leave the part of the sidewalk out. But I want to see if theres anything else I can bring to the meeting to bring their attention to the problem and fix this instead of trying to ignore it. They're a home owners association, we pay for them to make repairs and changes to the condos, so for them to say they won't fix the broken sidewalk, seems illegal or at the very least wrong.

This is in San Jose, CA.

TDLR; Neighbor's have a broken sidewalk, and 90 year old that lives there can't walk out her home safely while the surrounding neighbors have a nicer sidewalk.
