Can I be forced to have an abortion? Posted: 03 Apr 2019 05:47 AM PDT Hey legal advice. To start things off, I'm 16f. I do not live with my parents currently, I recently moved, but I was over at their house the other night to collect some of my items. While there, I was making small talk with my mother, telling her I wanted to get my septum pierced. No big deal really. Well apparently, having that piercing is the "sign of the devil" (eye roll I know) She said I couldn't get it. My father came in, overheard my mother, and said the same thing. Because I seem to be worshipping the devil in their eyes, they're strict religious people, my father demanded to know if I was doing other horrible acts such as sex or drugs. Of course I didn't admit it, but I also didn't outright deny it, so my father flew into an outrage. Along with saying I was going to burn in hell, he also said if I ever got pregnant, he would force me to have an abortion. I told me he couldn't because it's my body and he came back with it's his legal right as my parent. Is this true? Does he have the right to force me to have an abortion? I live in TN, USA btw. Posted: 03 Apr 2019 06:48 AM PDT So.. basically, my boyfriend has a 6 year old son. His Ex Girlfriend tricked him into getting her pregnant by not taking her birth control. As soon as she found out she was pregnant, she ran to the police and accused him of rape. They went to court and he was acquitted of a charge because she kept contradicting herself. But he still has to pay child support. Which was fine when he used to work as a cook. They calculated a child support of 930 bucks per month, according to his salary. But a few years later, he decided to take on a second apprenticeship as a car mechanic. Which obviously means less money, so in theory he should've paid less child support. But because he's doing an apprenticeship and can't pay child support due to his minimal salary, she got her child support paid by the state? (don't know what its called in english). Long story short - he owes the state about 23'000 bucks. Even though he let them know that he took on a second apprenticeship that doesn't even pay 930 bucks per month. They told him it doesn't matter because she got the advanced child support from the state when he used to earn a lot more. Is there anything we can do? I feel like this just isn't right. My boyfriend definitely did the wrong thing by ignoring it for so long, but is there anything we can do now? (We're based in Switzerland... so I know the law isn't exactly the same as in the US, but I feel like things just aren't right here.) [link] [comments] |
An ex-friend is sitting outside my house and won’t leave — I have to go to work — what now? Posted: 02 Apr 2019 11:03 PM PDT Connecticut — I (20s, woman) was very good friends with a man (not sexual at all. He was actually gay) for the better part of two years. I realized he was kind of a user and would never be there for me the way he expected me to be there for him. So three months ago after a lot of back and forth trying to salvage things I texted him that I wanted no further contact with him and goodbye (after failed attempts to get together in person.) I thought that would be the last of it. Last week he wrote me out of the blue, like we'd never stopped speaking. I ignored it and blocked his number. He messaged me from a different number. I ignored it. Two hours ago he showed up at my door. Knocked and said he knew I was in there and he wasn't leaving until I opened the door because I ghosted him and he wants answers (no I did not. I told him in clear language, in writing, goodbye forever.) Eventually after about 45 minutes he stopped knocking and I thought that was the end of it. I decided to look through the peephole just to be sure, and sure enough, he was sitting on steps. I called the only guy friend I have who he doesn't know who could pass as a boyfriend and asked if he'd come over and put the fear of God info him (NOT anything physical) just "What're you doing at my girlfriend's house? I don't know you. You need to leave or I'm calling the cops." Just any scenario in which I wouldn't have to give in and talk to him. I even called my cousin, a girl younger than I am, who lives nearby to come threaten to call the cops. No one was available. So 30 more minutes passes and he's sitting in his parked car directly in front of my house. Staring at the house. Waiting. It's about time for me to go to work soon so I call 911 to be sure this is dealt with before then. I walk to work and he could easily follow me in his car or get out and follow me. The police said since he was on a public Street in legal parking they couldn't do anything but to call if he came on the steps again. That was over an hour ago and he's still here. I had to give my shift to another person. If I'm not working I want to get some sleep, but I don't feel safe sleeping with him out there. I don't feel safe doing anything with him out there. I want him gone. I called police 5 minutes ago and said he's still out there please do something (first I called 911 but this time I called non emergency) and they again said if he's on the street in a legal space and he isn't idling I need to leave well enough alone or get a friend to escort me to work and school. My ex friend is obsessive, unemployed (unlimited free time), and he absolutely will try this again if I give in and communicate in any way. The minute I hung up with non emergency I started making this post. What can I do? tl;dr a man I used to be friends with is sitting in front of my house making me feel unsafe. He won't leave until I talk to him. Cops say he's technically on public land right now (the street in his car in legal parking) so they can't intervene. Any other suggestions? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Apr 2019 06:55 PM PDT Hi EDIT: This was central New Jersey, sorry So I was on my way to community college when a police officer pulled me over. Now I was in my brothers car, who had his licensed suspended, since it was newer and nicer. He said he pulled me over for speeding, then said "whys the inspection say 18?". Now the sticker was scratched up and the month was difficult to decipher, but it clearly said 19, which I pointed out, and he said "oh what about the month". Literally the day before my parents and I had been looking at it, and deduced it was 10 because there were clearly two digits and the second one had a curved bottom, with neither 1 or 2 has. (Older pics now confirm that it was likely 10). I told him as much, and he responds "well I can go find out for you" which I thought my father would like to know the answer, (edit) saying he would "call Trenton and check it out". He returned and told me "this car has never been inspected, that sticker is from a Honda Civic"(brothers car is 2014 Mazda suv) and peeled it off with his fingers and crumpled it up. That made me think he wasn't lying, we bought it used from a stranger, but the previous owner revealed that he had the window replaced and when they scraped the sticker off they left some behind. He then ticketed me for speeding, and my brother for no inspection, and fraudulent inspection. Cut to today, we take the car to the MVC to get inspected. MVC tells us it's still good until August 2019 as we purchased it last August, and the law is that 5 years after model year and purchase it is clear for driving. We have pics of car with old sticker from August 2018 (sticker clearly visible and legible), and the new sticker. We have purchase dates, Carfax, and are hoping to get window repair tab from previous owner. MVC also told us no way he "called Trenton" and found out. All records are kept in exclusively paper for two years in a shed (or some storage) at each private MVC. It would have to go to Trenton, then to the company, then to the individual location, then a guy there would have to find the record and report back all the way to a cop on patrol. So even though he wasted 25-30 min of my time, it would take far longer to accomplish that, and he would have no way of knowing what model car it was attached to. Also when he pulled me over, I handed him my license, registration and insurance as soon as I could, but mentioned I didn't know where the latter two were so I apologized while searching. He asked whose car it was, I said my brothers to which he immediately responded "why is his license suspended?". This caught me off guard, and I now believe he pulled me over thinking he hit the jackpot with my brother driving around. Anyways, how effectively can these tickets be fought? Best way and time to file complaint about officer? Can he peel off a sticker like that? I am very upset an officer lied to his teeth to me just to give out tickets, played me like a fool when I was trying to be as cooperative as possible, and that my family has to deal with all this crap. We also don't have the original sticker now and I am lost. Tl;Dr- Cop pulled me over for speeding, said my inspection sticker was no good after "calling Trenton" and was fraudulent. MVC said car is good, sticker was good, cop can't access that info. Cop lied, now we have court dates, how can I fight them? Thanks to anyone that can help and for your time EDIT1: Also I am not saying the stop was illegal or anything, but him saying that the car was never inspected, claiming the sticker was from another car, and just removing the sticker are the questionable things. I'm sure he can lookup the last inspection, yes, all its records? If the sticker is from another car? that's where the doubt lies. The related tickets are the primary concern, especially as we have proof it has been inspected and it is clear regardless, meaning he lied one way or another. [link] [comments] |
I've been living under a false identity and now am a witness/victim in a dv case Posted: 03 Apr 2019 09:10 AM PDT Throwaway account I'll only be on for a little longer if questions need answers 15 years ago I began living under an assumed name for a situation I needed to get out of (I'd like to not get into the details but it wasn't criminal on my end) my current job is a bit let's say under the table if you will He has me do some jobs and pays well but has me listed working in another field under his employment. As stated in the title I'm a witness/victim in a domestic violence case. My questions are 1 how deep will the defense lawyer go into my background? ( I know they won't find anything criminal in a standard check) 2 and if he does will he tell the defendant? 3 do they look into employment? Defendants charge is 1 count domestic violence a misdemeanor and It's probably a court appointed lawyer I was hoping to resolve the dv issue and not have to start life over This is in New England tri state area [link] [comments] |
Car buyer totaled "my" car, hit someone else, the person who got hit hired an attorney to sue us Posted: 03 Apr 2019 06:16 AM PDT Okay, I am panicking. I recently bought a car and was in the process of selling my old one. The car buyer was from Facebook. The buyer did not have the money up front, which was alright with me because I was in the process of ordering a duplicate title to sell the car. I got all of the car buyer's information and allowed him to use the car until he came up with the money and I had the title in hand for us to do the legal switching over. I know that was a stupid thing to trust somebody I didn't know, but he was a single, recently divorced dad with two girls that needed a break, and I had the means to give him one until we could everything finalized. Also, while he was using the car, the insurance on it expired, and I didn't renew it, as I had intended to sell the car almost immediately after that. I made arrangements to pick up the check for the car, but he asks for one more week for the money, and I gave it to him. The day before I'm supposed to pick up the money and sell him the car, he gets into an accident with it and totaled the car. He called me immediately and was apologetic and that he'll still pay for the car and the removal of the car. He claimed the damage done to the other car was minor. A few anxious days pass and my insurance calls to notify me that the person who got hit repaired the car on their own, but that they've hired an attorney for bodily injury. And since the car was uninsured, he will personally come after us to pay for his medical bills. The car buyer/driver has verbally claimed full responsibility and that "he'll take care of everything," but won't send that to me in writing. The car was still registered under my name at the time of the accident. I feel so f*cked here. I was just trying to help someone out and it's completely screwed me over. I'm nervous, anxious, stressed, and mostly scared. Is there anything I can do in this situation? edit: this is in PA edit 2: the car buyer has now disappeared and I can't get into contact with him. edit 3: turns out he's not MIA, my bad. Posted: 03 Apr 2019 03:48 AM PDT Hello. This is a long one so I will just make a list of events. My main question is wondering if its worth pursuing legal action against the housing company, or the collection company. Received 2 months free rent as promotion to move into new apartment complex (large complex) Moved in January, lived happily for 4 months Easter weekend, roommate finds a bag of oxycotton in the building hallway (like a hotel hallway) turns it into the leasing office. Cops come and check it out. (cameras in building) (OC bag was half a fist size) Police report made, cops leave, end scene. About a month later we see a $5k charge (2 months rent) on our account we use to pay rent/etc. We wonder whats up, assume they missed our rent payment on accident. After investigation we find out that it was them charging us for the 2 free months that we got when we moved in. Reason- Violating our lease terms by possessing drugs (the Oxycotton WE TURNED IN!!!!) We try to talk to the office staff about it but they have been told they cannot discuss it with us. They start putting pressure on us to pay up, we stand our ground, roommate gets a meeting w/ a mediator. We receive the option to either not stay and leave w/out facing punishment of breaking our lease, or stay for our lease and not pay, but the situation gets swept under the rug, and we cannot pursue action against the company. We say F that, we are leaving. We assume everything is done and over. They were even required to pay for a moving company. [side note before part 2, they required us to move out 3 days b4 the end of the month so they could turn the apartment over to the next tenant, this was a pain but in the lease so we accepted, unfortunately our stuff could not be accessed until we were ready to take ALL of it, so for 3 days I lived out of my car, b/c if i went to the storage unit, I would need to take EVERYTHING. Then we find out from our old across the hall neighbors that no one moved in for over 2 months. All that hassle for nothing...) PART 2 - Debt Collection Just when we think everything is all said and done, we each receive a collection notice in the mail for the $5k, plus $6k in additional charges. We absolutely are not paying that. However, anyone thats lived in Boston knows that housing is very competitive, and having a collection on your account basically means you wont be approved for housing. After a Month, my roommate (we no longer live together at this point as i moved back to NY) pays the debt. He was having tons of issues with housing and decided to pay and take them to court later, so he could temporarily move on and be approved for housing. The only problem is they never reported it paid on my end of the account. I went for over a year until I applied for an apartment and it came up on my credit report. A delinquent payment for $11k... We call the company and they say they are going to remove it from my account. Never happens. Now my credit is screwed for a collection that was actually paid, off of a debt that was bogus in the first place. I have been declined from multiple hosing complex's, and was only able to get an auto loan at almost 9% interest. Am I able to hold the collection agency accountable for not reporting it as paid on time? Am I able to go after the housing complex for filing this $11k debt after we agreed on our dismissal terms? TL:DR - Housing company files debt for money we didn't owe, collection agency doesn't report as paid after we foolishly pay it anyways. Credit is absolutely ruined when it goes over its payment window. Consequences of having a collection on credit report ensues. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Apr 2019 05:36 AM PDT Hi everyone. I'm very upset and I've come to reddit for advice. I have two wonderful dogs. Not aggressive at all and they never bark unless they're excited to see me when I come home. I spoil them and I just love them so much. My landlord loves my dogs and I'm allowed to have them. The lady below me hates me, I live in the upper of a duplex. If it's not one thing, it's another. She threatens my roommate and I about using the driveway because she "pays more" but when we asked the landlord for confirmation he said that she's never paid more or owns the driveway. So when she went to threaten me again about it (she literally corners me), I showed her the texts of our landlord saying she doesn't pay more or own the driveway, she'll make an excuse saying "well you and your roommate share rent, I pay full." Keep in mind my roommate moved in in February and is leaving in July. I've lived here for a year and a half. If it's not the driveway it's the laundry. She hates that I use the laundry. One day she turned it off because she didn't want to hear it running and screamed at me through MY kitchen door for about 5 minutes. She pounds on my door at 9 at night to yell at me for things my roomie and I didn't even do and make us fix it, i.e trash overflowing that isn't ours I clean after my dogs every single day. Morning and night. Some days I take my dogs to work with me since I'm military. But on the days I can't, I hire Rover to stop by and give them a walk. I don't work a Monday through Friday job. So most days I'm with them so please don't say I neglect my animals. I hired a lady to come by to take care of my dogs and I guess she never picked up poop. This was at 3 o clock. I came home at 5. At 4 o clock I received a text with vulgar language saying how her handicapped son cannot utilize the yard because of dog feces and that she can't wait to get my dogs taken away by police. She'll be filing a police report. When I came home I saw there was one poo in the corner of the yard under a bush. I'm scared. My landlord knows, he also knows the harassment that has been going on. And the fact that she sells drugs and the house reeks of weed some days. I'm at a loss. She calls us racist because we use the driveway, or we come in and out of the house. We live here. Everyone at my job is aware of the situation. I just don't know what to do. If she does file a police report and they come to the house they'll see that my house is spotless (I clean everyday), my dogs are healthy and fed, shots are all up to date, they're friendly and the yard has zero poop in it. But I'm still scared of coming home to the possibility of my dogs gone because of her. Can she have police take my dogs away? If my landlord says he's on my side, and has no intention of evicting me, could I still be in trouble by law? Thank you for all the replies and advice ahead of time. And I apologize if I'm jumbled, I'm still crying about this. TLDR: I have a neighbor that lives below me who harasses and threatens me about everything I do. I clean my dogs poop every morning and every night. I hire rover to let my dogs out while I'm at work. Rover lady forgot to pick up one poop (that's in the corner of the yard) and my neighbor sent me a vulgar text saying that she's filing a report because her handicapped son can't use the yard due to poo. (she sent this on a rainy and muddy day.) I'm worried my dogs are at risk of being taken away. [link] [comments] |
I created a guide on Steam, and a website copied it, and added monetization. Posted: 02 Apr 2019 07:11 PM PDT I know this isn't as big of a deal as a lot of the other posts here, but still. I am the co-creator of a guide for a game on Steam, Risk of Rain 2. My friend and I worked very hard to finish it in just two days after release, a fact we're very proud of. However, a certain site took our work, monetizing it. You can see that here. The only credit given is a tiny line at the bottom crediting my partner alone. For reasons obvious, this is an infuriating experience, and words cannot describe the mix of pride that someone thought our guide was good enough to steal it, and anger that someone actually stole it. The issues lay in the fact that our guide is for a game, on a platform that isn't ours, so the rights get a bit muddied. Is there any way I could have the guide removed? Thank you for any help! Posted: 03 Apr 2019 07:39 AM PDT 3 years ago I was in a relationship with someone, it ended, year later she was with someone else and having a rough patch. We decided to fool around and I stopped talking to her soon after I found out she went back to her old man. Weeks later I hear shes pregnant, and I ask if its mine. She says there is no way. 2 months ago she texts me wanting to hang out, I refuse, ask how the boy is doing and again ask if theres a chance he is mine. She says due to DNA testing, hes not. I'm happy, stop talking to her again because I have a girlfriend currently.. today I get a message saying that she thinks he is my son and had lied about DNA test being done.. I agree to meet up with her later and do a DNA test today. If he turns out to be.mone, what is the best legal action plan? Considering I want full rights, but would be hard without me being there for him one bit ever. His mom is on and off drugs constantly but no way for me to prove it. I dont want to end up being in a boat where I have to pay child support for a child I had no idea was mine until today. Trust me, i would rather that boy come home with me than be with his mother and my check go to her. I need help. As soon as I hear the DNA results, if he is mine, I will hire lawyer. Is there anything else I can do. I have various screenshots of our conversations but none anymore saying that she says its not mine. I live in Kansas, if this helps anyone that knows about laws. Posted: 03 Apr 2019 07:23 AM PDT My state is Indiana and my fiance lives in Sweden. We are getting rather confused about laws and best course of action. It seems that, in order for a foreigner to marry in the US, they would need to enter on a fiance visa. However, the US does not require Swedish nationals to hold any type of visa to enter the US for a maximum length of 90 days. We are unclear if a fiance visa is actually necessary. For example, would my fiance be able to marry me here without the visa, then return to Sweden while we file the paperwork for a spousal visa/green card, or would this be considered immigration fraud? From what I've read, it's easier to get approved for a spousal visa than a fiance visa. So we're also wondering whether the better option would be to marry in Sweden, then I return to the US and file the paperwork. I'm just not finding much information other than the process for applying for a fiance visa. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Apr 2019 05:47 AM PDT So, my friend quit her job in Ohio recently due to the fact that their unsafe work practices led to her re-tearing the ligaments in her knee, which was an old injury, and then later cracking a vertebra. She filed for worker's comp after the first injury and left the company after the second. She recently applied for a new job at a different company but was denied and was told that the first company had told them that she was, as stated before, 'unusable' and would 'destroy their workplace in a week' as well as being 'unreliable' and 'rude'. This is patently untrue, as before the first injury, she had been offered a managerial position (at Company 1). What legal recourse, if any, does she have? (I'm in Louisiana and have no knowledge of Ohio's legal practices.) [link] [comments] |
Blacklisted from employment because I was a part of a union Posted: 03 Apr 2019 12:30 PM PDT Backstory. Several years a go I worked for a unionized construction company. It wasn't for me so I left after 2 years. I've since gone got to school to get a construction related diploma. I have a solid resume but I'm not getting call backs. I have a connection to one of the companies I applied for and reached out to see what was up. I was told that because i was in the union, the union could show up and force the company to sign with the union. So company is afraid that if they hire me they'll be forced to join the union. I could take the union job off my resume but it the major part of my field experience Is there presedent for unions doing this. And do I have any recourse against companies that wont hire me or the union. Ontario [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Apr 2019 07:42 AM PDT Title explains most everything, but I'll add details. I'm a wedding photographer and have been in discussions with a potential client for a few months now and sent along a contract, that I signed. I've made changes to the contract for this potential client a number of times and signed each time before the client. Potential client emailed me last night to ask for more changes, and I'm fed up with the amount of changes that he's asking for (language and detail minutia) and with only a month before his wedding, I'm seeing this as a red flag for our business relationship and I want out. No money has been exchanged and the client has not signed anything. Do I have the legal right to walk away now even though I signed the contract and he did not? Should my wording to him be specific to avoid running into problems? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 03 Apr 2019 01:39 PM PDT For the past 7 months after moving in to my new house with my daughter and dogs the neighbors child who's 15/16 and has pretty severe downs syndrome has increasingly been entering my property and home. At first I just talked to the neighbors and they were at first really sorry and vowed to monitor her more while she's in their backyard. However after a few months they just genuinely do not care anymore and brush it off. I've installed security cameras in the backyard and front yard purely for my own safety insurance wise because we do have a pool. She will climb the fence into my yard (6' wooden privacy fence) with a ladder from their shed and let my dogs out. I've fixed her letting my dogs "free" as she says by using chains and padlocks on the two gates. Before this became a common occurrence she even would let the dogs out of the house and then "free" them. Numerous times if my garage door is open she will leave their backyard and just walk into my house to free my dogs. I don't know what the purpose is other than it's something she just has to do for whatever reason. When she climbs into the backyard (sometimes when I'm not even home) and she cannot get back out she begins screaming and crying and just shuts down. Before I started chaining and locking my gates because of her releasing my dogs her parents would just walk in and get her and leave. Now since I've chained it they start a huge fit about me having her locked in my backyard and they have to climb the fence, bring the ladder over and carry her back over. Somehow this is my fault. Now I'm not really blaming her because she mentally doesn't know any better, she has some very severe issues and she's damn lucky my dogs are super nice (purebred German Shepard, an English bulldog and a mix Sheppard/bulldog). I just honestly worry about her safety in the backyard, climbing fences and her seemingly not being watched as she needs to be. I have a pool and if she falls in when I'm not home she could very well drown. That's why I installed security cameras to cover my own ass if that ever happens, I truly hope it never does but it seems her parents just put her in the backyard and that's it. I've called the local child and family services office (CPS) several times in the past two months to report it because I feel she is at risk with her parents inattentiveness and their seemingly not caring attitude of her just going into people's yards, garages, houses etc. I have a full garage of power tools, table saws etc that I've now had to resort to flipping the breaker off when I open the doors out of fear she may severely injure herself. I feel like I've done everything I can, talked to the parents numerous times, called child and family services, installed cameras, locked my gates further. I just have no idea what to do now? I've debated calling the police when she enters but I don't know how that will escalate. [link] [comments] |

GF was fired without two weeks notice in Ottawa, Ontario Posted: 03 Apr 2019 11:44 AM PDT Hey guys so I'm not sure if it is allowed to ask a question on behalf of someone else (my girlfriend, in this case). If not I will get her to submit her own post, but she basically has no idea how to use Reddit. Anyways, she filed a report with the Ministry of Labour of Ontario but I figured pursuing this avenue couldn't hurt either. "One of my co-workers and I had a meeting with our employers and managers about how they can improve the treatment of their employees and how they can reduce their production of plastic waste, I complained that a lot of employees were not being treated fairly and that they do not feel comfortable approaching upper management to talk about their issues, in fear of being dismissed. Their response was, "If employees do not feel comfortable in the workplace then they should consider working elsewhere, that it is the employees' fault, and that the employees should work on that". In the meeting we discussed how the store does not recycle but in FOH (restaurant lingo for front of the house) we have a recycling bin to trick our customers into thinking that we recycle because customers have complained about this issue in the past. During this meeting I asked that we stop saying that we recycle because none of the employees feel comfortable lying about this, which they agreed to. Their solution was to flip the bins around so the word "recycling" no longer shows as it would be facing towards the wall. On March 30, 2019, it was very busy and many employees working that day were not informed that the recycling bin was to be turned around so the recycling sign could be hidden. To quickly solve this I labeled with a marker: "Not Recycling" on the unflipped bin. On March 31st I came in for my shift that was 9-4, at around 3 pm they asked me if I wanted to leave because they did not need that much employees since it was no longer busy, and that they would pay me for the rest of my shift. I declined the offer because it would not be fair to my co-workers and finished the rest of the shift normally. On April 1st, I came in for my 9-3 shift, however at 8:50 AM they terminated my employment (without any prior notice) and asked me to leave the premises after accusing me of vandalism and threatening to report me to the police. The general manager also added that I "should be grateful that he's not an ass so they will not report me and ruin my future." I replied that it was just a misunderstanding and that it was just an effective way to quickly deal with the recycling bin issue during rush hour. They repeated that it was not a misunderstanding and they also added that they will pay me for today's 9-3 shift even though they don't legally have to. Around 20 minutes later one of my coworkers (who had been in the meeting regarding the dishonesty about the restaurant recycling) called me to inform me that she had been fired, without 2 weeks notice, on the basis of vandalism, even though she never wrote anything at all. As I was at the bus stop the General Manager sprinted to me to inform me that we were both permanently banned from all of their restaurants. " OP here, my question to r/legaladvice is: does she have a chance at contesting this, her coworker is also fully willing to testify/interview/lend whatever help because she was also screwed over by their GM. TL;DR: GF and her friend called out the GM of a restaurant for pretending they do recycling after customers complained, she (not the coworker) writes "NOT RECYCLING" (in about what looks like size 36 Arial on microsoft word for scale) in sharpie, he fires them both in the next few days without two weeks notice nor two week's severance pay (idk if that's the word for it) and tells them he wont report them to the police and ruin their life because hes not an ass. Already filed a report with the Ministry of Labour but I figured you guys would definitely know stuff that would be able to help. Thanks for reading. [link] [comments] |

evicting an illegal subtenant ?? I'm desperate Posted: 03 Apr 2019 04:44 AM PDT I live in a house with two other roommates. I'm in college. One of the original tenants, let's call her Nicole, moved out after fall semester. The other tenant, Vanessa and I continue to live in the house. Nicole found a subtenant for the spring semester, Vanessa met him, gave him a tour of the house and he seemed nice so she gave her approval. I talked to him on the phone and he seemed great and he was in. There were no red flags throughout the vetting process for any 3 of us. Everything took a nose-dive from there. Living with this person has turned into my worst nightmare. They aren't just a "bad roommate" in the normal, doesn't-do-dishes way. I don't feel safe or comfortable living with them. I have plenty of examples and experiences that validate the way I feel. I can provide anecdotes if it's necessary, but it's really bad. He has an extensive criminal record, God only knows what drugs he's done in the house, he's not only on academic probation, but also was kicked out of campus housing after his first semester. Vanessa doesn't necessarily feel unsafe like I do (her room is downstairs, mine is literally two feet away from his with no lock) but she isn't comfortable living with him either. Here's the catch: the scary subtenant moved in without signing the sublease agreement for our rental agency. This was completely Nicole's fault. She came to town right after he moved in (late January), printed the paperwork for him, signed her share, gave him instructions on where to turn it in it etc. He never did. When she visited in March and found out the paperwork wasn't filed, it was too late to turn it in without risking lease termination or whatever else. She asked us if he could sublease the room "undocumented" and we said okay. Verbally. We were really backed into a corner, since he had already been living there for months when it came to light that his sublease was not approved or communicated to the property managers. After finding out more and more about his colorful criminal record and status with the college, there is no way they would have approved his sublet application. Vanessa and I decided to kick him out after the semester ends at least a month ago. We don't really know how, he has anger issues and we don't know how he will react. I thought I could tough this out til May, but I don't think it's possible anymore. The stress and straight-up dread I feel living with him is severely impacting my quality of life, despite 3 months of my efforts. I want him out ASAP. Here is what my rental agreement says: http://tinypic.com/r/2yzfkec/9 Do you think my landlord would terminate me and Vanessa's lease if we went to them? We are signed on to live there again next year. How the hell do I get my house and my wellbeing back????? [link] [comments] |
I was sprayed in the face with sulfuric acid at work 3 months ago and the damage seems permanent Posted: 02 Apr 2019 02:58 PM PDT January of this year while at work i was sprayed in the face with sulfuric acid. I work as a Waste Water Treatment employee for a factory in my town. This place has been around since the 40's and has a "you're fine rub some dirt on it" mentality. Anytime I have ever seen an employee get hurt and then ask for help it has always been met with doubt and hostility, often borderline harrassment over getting hurt in the first place as if the employee is always at fault. It's very clear they don't want injuries reported and doctors appointments paid for through their own insurance. It's very clear they avoid that at all costs. Well immediately after I was shot in the face with sulfuric I sprinted to the hose and rinsed my face off as fast as I could and then reported the incident to my boss's immediately. After asking if I was okay and having responded "I think I am I'm not sure". I was not examined in any way or given any kind of medical treatment. They sent me right back to work to repair the line that had sprayed me. So I went right back to work and tried to not be too upset about what had happened. This all transpired on a friday. By the time monday had rolled around the damage to my face was more then apparent. Red, inflamed, peeling and patchy my cheeks were so fucked.. So i brought it up. I demanded medical treatment and they finally complied. They wrote up an incident report on the spot and applied burn cream to my face. It did nothing and the reality of the situation set in that the damage that was done is more or less permenant. Here we are 3 months later and having given it months to heal on its own and hopefully get better it hasnt. So i walked into HR today and made it clear that i wanted medical treatment from a doctor. Everything was cleared through there insurance and i have an appointment at a hole in the wall walk in clinic 3 weeks from now... the clinic they are sending me too is rated 2/5 stars online and is clearly not the best place to receive treatment. I am almost certain there will be little they can do so i am here to ask if i should lawyer up and fight for compensation for my now permanently scarred and damage face. Do i have any ground to stand on here? Thank you in advance for any who can offer me advice, as i am completely lost and only looking to better understand my options going forward. edit: this transpired in midwest America. [OR] HVAC workers left garage open and left for lunch, bike was stolen. Are they liable? Posted: 03 Apr 2019 10:13 AM PDT A few weeks back my husband and I had some work done on the HVAC system in our home. I was upstairs in our bedroom with the dog, which they knew. At lunchtime they left the house and didn't close the garage door or let me know they were leaving; they were gone for an hour, and in that time, someone went into our garage and stole my husband's custom bicycle. We have the whole thing documented on camera, including the thief casing the house while the workers were still onsite, and the workers returning and walking straight into the open garage. We've contacted the company but we're being given the runaround. At first we were told we were mistaken and they hadn't left the garage open. Then when shown video evidence, they insisted they didn't have a clear enough picture of the "whole situation." I sent about 12 more videos, creating a thorough timeline of the day, and they're now dodging our calls. We'd like to file a claim against their liability insurance if possible, as the bike was fairly expensive (about $1750 to build a new one with similar parts.) We have photos of the bike and receipts for most of the custom work that was done. I do want to confirm first though that the company is actually liable in a legal sense. While I certainly feel they're responsible ethically, I don't want to escalate unless I know we have legal footing. Is there any way for us to recoup our loss? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Apr 2019 06:42 AM PDT I moved in to my current apartment back in October. Naturally we tried to assume responsibility for our electrical bill right away, but the management company told us that there was a problem with the building's meters. They told us on the phone that they would pay the electric bill until further notice. Fast forward to today. The management company forwarded us a bill (addressed to them) for the past six months. I was confused, since I understood that the management company was supposed to have been paying the bill, so I spoke to other tenants. It turns out the management company told all of us the same thing, and now they are forwarding us final notices. Of course the lease says we are responsible for electric, and we would have been paying happily the whole time, except that they went around telling all of the tenants that they were taking care of it for now. Anything we can do here, legally? [link] [comments] |
