Posted: 15 Apr 2019 02:39 AM PDT I'm going to visit my PCP today since it was the weekend. I was transported via EMS to the ER. I work in construction so I'm also unable to work. I'm also going to see my bike for the first time today, which I'm assuming is totalled. I've never had to deal with a major insurance event like this so I'm unfamiliar with what my best path at this point is. [link] [comments] |
New driver with car insurance that is too high. Help! Posted: 14 Apr 2019 01:54 PM PDT Hi! I have a question about getting car insurance. Background: I'm a new driver, recently passed my practical test. I'm going to get a car in the next few days and I've been looking at insurance policies online. The cheapest annual policy for me is ~£3k which is astonishingly expensive. This is probably due to a combination of me being a new driver and the area I live in, which might be one of the worst areas in the UK in terms of crime and accidents. My housing situation is a bit complicated in the next 2 months though. After 2 weeks, I will be moving to a much better area and staying there for 6 weeks. I'm then spending 2 weeks in another location, and after that starting my first job in August in another location for a year. When I put in my new address (-es) and job into comparison sites, the cheapest quote from another provider was £900. Is there a way for me to get temporary insurance for 2 weeks and then start the policy after I move? What would you advise? Just to tack on another questions—do I have to update the insurance company with regards to my address and housing situation every time I move? (I can't get a car after I move because I require it urgently.) [link] [comments] |
Need advice about hail damage on 2010 Kia Soul- Canada Posted: 14 Apr 2019 10:56 PM PDT Hello, I am in need of some advice regarding my 2010 Kia Soul. My car was a victim of the huge hail storm in August, and I am trying to decide whether to make a car insurance claim for the hail damage, before the one year time limit elapses. The hail damage dinged my hood and roof pretty badly. I am located in Alberta, Canada. I did inquire with my insurance company, Cooperators, immediately after the hail storm in August, about whether my plan covers hail, which it does. My agent did note in my file about my inquiry at the time. Fast forward to now, I was a victim of a hit and run last week, where the other driver rear ended me, and I have put a claim in for that damage. I am going to be going to a body shop soon to get that damage assessed for insurance, and was thinking about getting a non-insurance assessment done for the hail damage done at the same time. Note: this accident only caused damage on my rear bumper. (The rear of my car had no hail damage). I am torn between making a hail damage claim or not. Here are some concerns I have regarding it:
Key points to note: I am not in a position to afford a new car, nor do I want one, as my car is mechanically sound. Kia Soul's of my year and condition range between $5-10k (a quick search on autotrader.ca - not a lot are in my area with similar stats). Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Property Damage Liability Vs. Collision Coverage in a No Fault State Posted: 14 Apr 2019 10:05 PM PDT I'm a little confused as to which takes precedence in an accident in a no fault state. From my understanding, each person covers their own car for damages. In the event of an accident where you are at fault, collision would cover damages to your own vehicle. The other party's collision would cover damages to their own vehicle. So what is the use of property damage liability coverage? As per Progressive's definition of property damage liability coverage, "In an accident where it has been determined that you are at fault, Property Damage coverage will cover the expenses for any property damage you may cause in an auto accident. This includes damages to other vehicles and structures such as buildings, telephone poles and fences." PD liability and collision coverage in a no fault state seems conflicting to me, but maybe I'm not understanding it correctly? [link] [comments] |
Stupid Decision by a College Kid Posted: 14 Apr 2019 06:15 PM PDT Hi, I'm a 19 year old college student that had to go to the ER this past Friday because of alcohol intoxication. I drank too much and was back at my dorm room and I guess I was throwing up so an ambulance had to take me to my college's medical center (about 1 mile away). I was admitted to the ER and woke up about 2 hours later hooked up to an IV. I was informed the visit was about $450 but I would like to know how much the ambulance would be. I really don't want to use my parents insurance because, although it wont cost anything, I dont want to break their trust. Basically I'm willing to pay to keep this from reaching my parents and am stressing about it being a ridiculous cost like $5,000 or something. I have the means to pay up to $2,000. Need Experts on HDHPs, HSAs and Taxes Posted: 14 Apr 2019 06:14 PM PDT I need some tax help with HSAs and HDHPs: Taxes are already complete for 2018. This question/problem is for the 2019 tax return (I plan ahead). In 2018, my wife was on a single HDHP Jan –June. July-Dec, she was on a family plan. During 2018, I was on a co-pay plan Jan- June and then joined my wife's HDHP family plan for the remainder of the year. Using the Last Month Rule, I (we) took the full deduction for 2018, $7900 (I was 55). It was divided up as $2500 contributed to my HSA and $5400 to my wife's. In 2019 we continue to both be on a family plan. However, my wife's COBRA runs out on November 30. I haven't found any way to extend our HDHP one more month to be in compliance with the 2018 Last Month Rule. We will be transitioning to a co-play plan through our retirement as of December 1. I have gone through example and example of how the taxes work but none of the examples quite cover our situation. Can anyone provide me with an explanation on how to determine our penalty for not being in an HDHP plan for all of 2019? Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Advice on very minor fender bender Posted: 14 Apr 2019 05:30 PM PDT So yesterday my gf was driving my car and whilst at a stop light accidentally let off the brake and coasted into the car in front of her. The damage to the other car is very minimal, basically it was just some "spiderwebbed" paint on the rear bumper plastic that's about a foot wide. You can't even see it unless you get up close like about 3 feet away. His car is a mid to late 2000's sedan i think. Nothing super nice very basic. She had to have been going 1-2 mph at most. The damage to my front bumper is nil, im not concerned at all and am not going to bother with it. She said he was a really nice, normal, not sketchy guy and he said that it would be best to not involve insurance but he was going to get it checked out "to see if there was any alignment issues". Not exactly sure what he meant but if hes referring to wheel alignment there is no way in hell that tiny bump could affect alignment. He's going to get an estimate tomorrow apparently, we are communicating via text and today I told him I'd prefer if we could deal with it with cash instead of insurance... Now I'm starting to worry he had existing alignment issues and is going to try to say that we caused this... Should I be concerned? I really dont want to get my insurance involved because my premiums are already higher than I'd like. Insurance stuff confuses me and I've only had to claim once in the past but that was a while ago so im a bit rusty with all this. Should I be worried he's trying to pull a fast one on me? Advice would be appreciated... [link] [comments] |
Posted: 14 Apr 2019 09:04 PM PDT Sorry, this is a long one... So basically over the winter, a pipe burst in my mother's house. It occurred in the upstairs bathroom, thus gravity allowed the water to fuck all kinds of shit up on its way down. So this is where it gets complex. My mother moved about 6-8 months earlier to the west coast from the east coast to be closer to her family since she is gravely ill. She was pushed to sell by the realtor at the beginning and received numerous verbal assurances that the house would be taken care of, should she move. I, her son who is a student 3 hours away, would come up on the occasional weekend, like once a month, to trim the lawn and keep the house in generally sellable condition. So fast forward a few months, my mother has moved to the west coast. Relations with this realtor generally progress downward as she wants to continually lower the price, to which my mother refuses as she is in no rush to sell the house. She would request that none of the residents be in the house when she completed the showings and would text me in particular as I would come on weekends when the showings occurred. Eventually, these texts dried up and it seemed like she had stopped showing the house and lost interest in pursuing the sale. She lost her temper at my mother, in all honesty slightly reasonably, as my mother had not been answering the phone. This is due to her undergoing surgery during her chemo sessions and she was very weak and just didn't pick up the phone. My mother being older would avoid the cell phone because the "ringing" would annoy her and eventually the phone would die. The realtor knew that she could contact myself or my sister (as well as my mother's numerous sisters and brothers supporting her) but never seemed to reach out. Fast forward a month or two we all receive a call from this realtor. She basically states that she's leaving the company and that we should get in contact with her boss to assign another realtor. So we are introduced to the Manager. She expresses her apologies for the realtor's departure and ensures that she will take over the sale when we expressed our suspicions that she hadn't been showing the house. To the manager's credit, she did begin to show the house more frequently. I then get spammed with calls during my finals week. I get out of my exam and call my sister as she said to contact her asap. So a pipe had burst in the bathroom upstairs. The manager, imo handled the situation poorly, involving the power company, police department, water company, fire department and who knows what else. Eventually, someone turns off the water to the house and the power company kills the power, -all great, but I did not see why the fire department and police were involved-. My mother then contacted her attorney brother. He said to call state farm and start the claim process. State Farm informed my mother that she needed to contact a cleanup company to "dry" the house out. My mother calls them and has them visit the house. I am unable to get to the house until the weekend so these guys work completely unsupervised and nobody was really informed how extensive their work was going to be. My mother was also lead to believe that this work would be covered in the claim. So I visit the house that weekend and it is torn apart. Walls are left to complete structure, floors completely removed and tools and general debris is scattered across the property. I don't touch or clean up anything because I didn't want to interfere. I did confirm that the heat was set above 50 or 55 the state minimum to prevent frozen pipes, it was at 60 degrees. We have a steam boiler and radiator heat. The boiler will occasionally need a top up of water but not frequently at all. Fast forward a few weeks, the insurance company is dragging its feet. We receive an estimate for 70,000$+ in work, it was a low ball apparently, and are told we need to talk to this insurance agent. This guy insists we fax everything and that faxes take at least 3 days to be processed. It has been months later of us complying with their every will, being honest and giving all information promptly. This is the first claim on this policy. My mother just informed me that the claim has been denied as they "sent an engineer" to check the valve and he stated that there was some "out" for the insurance company. They would not let us see the engineers report, my tinfoil hat tells me no one actually came as they knew no one was home, so we are in the process of obtaining our own engineering and getting an unbiased view. I do not know if my mother had it put in the contract with the realty company that they were to maintain the house and such. I have pushed her for the form but she is very ill and I have trouble motivating her to find it in her still unpacked boxes. There have been no offers on the house from the realty company yet. I am curious who would be at fault as no one was home and it occurred during the week. She is also very ill so I'm afraid I must ask what would happen if she passed, god forbid. Please let me know what our options are and any other advise you can provide. If you need anything else please ask. Thanks. -This is a throwaway but I will check it daily!!!!- edit-new jersey- [link] [comments] |
Renters insurance situation with roommate Posted: 14 Apr 2019 05:22 AM PDT Hey everyone, I'm renting an apartment in a city where my university is with a longtime friend. Her mom bought us a renters insurance policy because it stated that we needed to have it in the lease. I was paying her half of the premium (like $7 a month). It recently came to my attention that roommates typically are not covered on renters insurance policies. I checked out the hard copy of the policy and my name was no where on it so I'm assuming I'm not covered under it. I told my roommate to refund me the money I was paying her and that I would just get my own policy. She got really annoyed by this and is claiming that I am on the policy and that my belongings are covered and I need to keep paying her. I'm not so much worried about my stuff being stolen or ruined, because I'm a college student and I don't have nice things. I'm more worried about the liability aspect of the policy not covering me if something horrible were to happen in our apartment. Anyone sell renters insurance policies typically and know if it usually covers roommates or what the deal is with that? Should I go out and get my own policy? Thank you!!! [link] [comments] |
Car insurance for my visiting Mother In law Posted: 14 Apr 2019 07:02 PM PDT Hello. So my MIL is staying with us currently, maybe for a few months. What are the basics of having her added to our insurance so she can drive our car? Is it based on her own history? She's never had her own car but has driven her other son's car and had accidents before. So I'm sure the rates will be high for her (I think she's 65 years old). And the biggest question is, so when she leaves, do we just remove her and it's back to our regular (good standing/no accidents) insurance or will our rates remain high because of her? Will it follow us? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Rexent house fire. Need advice please on claims! Posted: 14 Apr 2019 06:05 PM PDT Please excuse any formatting, on mobile! My Fiance had a house fire recently. Heavy damage, not sure if it will be a tear down or gutted yet. Myself and my 3 sons were set to move in with him in July. I'm also 6 months pregnant. I still have my very small 3 bdrm townhouse that I rent. Need advice on how to make sure we don't get screwed on anything. Mainly right now is the living expenses, as he can't stay in the house, I offered he stay here full time and Insurance has offered to give him a monthly stipend to help with the increased bills. He also has a young daughter who he has every other weekend. We are cramped in this place and looking at it being like this for at least 6 months before we are back in his house. And soon a baby will be joining the fun. He has excellent coverage, and the Insurance adjuster seemed like he was there to help. But when they started going through his possessions and it is starting to seem like they are going to low ball him, and screw him over. There is so much more info I could write .. just need help with the living expenses right now. His policy says he is covered for $66K for living, with what they are offering it would take about 4 years to get that money. Not trying to scam them, just trying to get what is reasonable. Can we push them for more? All of it? Help! Located in Canada if that helps. No previous claims for any kind of insurance. Edit: Ugh can't edit my title of course, sorry about the typo! Posted: 14 Apr 2019 08:34 AM PDT I will be passing my test soon and I have a car, only I'm leaving for New Zealand, late August. My question is what do I do in terms of insurance? Do I get a normal quote pay monthly and cancel it? However, what would the charge be for doing so? Or would it be best to get cheap short term insurance? Thanks [link] [comments] |
