Has anyone had experience getting verified on Instagram with a low following?

    Posted: 22 Apr 2019 05:41 PM PDT

Title says it all. Majority of my business comes through Instagram and I'm looking to get verified. I only have about 4K followers and the account is 3.5 years old. When applying, what business document should I submit to get approved? Trademark?

    Dropping a client

    Posted: 22 Apr 2019 10:33 PM PDT

    Hey there all,

I feel like this is a common topic that comes up but i was looking for some advice regarding dropping a client.

They tend not to pay on time (like 3 months overdue consistently) and then expect me to pick up the phone at midnight, or me to work ridiculous hours. I'm at the point where the work to pay ratio just feels not great.

I also think they would benefit more by taking it in house. And having someone in there team who can better generate content (was doing social media + web dev).

They currently owe me 1.5 months outstanding invoices and will owe me another month at the end of this one, and I was wondering is it best to ask for the outstanding invoices to be paid and then ask to end the relationship with a one month buffer period to find a new replacement?

Or if anyone has a better suggestion for a faster way to do it that would be great too.

How to go about approaching a company using the same brand name?

    Posted: 23 Apr 2019 12:26 AM PDT

I operate in Australia and have registered my trademark internationally through IP Australia.

Recently I noticed a brand in Canada using our name. Exactly the same three words, operating within the same industry selling more or less the same thing.

I would prefer if they would stop using our name, we incorporated in 2015 and the Canadian company since 2018. How should I go about this?

Option 1. Engage a solicitor. Instruct solicitor to send a cease and disist letter to the entity.

Option 2. Contact them through their website, link the WIPO Global brand database which we are registered with.

    Option 3. Leave it.

Looking to invest capital in or raise capital for business ideas or cash generation operations that need a quick capital injection and guidance on getting of the ground

    Posted: 23 Apr 2019 12:46 AM PDT

Hi. I'm looking to setup a small fund which will invest capital in new businesses and raise capital from new investors for future projects or expansions. I already have capital to invest and have the ability to raise more for a vision I can buy into.

I don't intend to get involved in day-to-day ops but want to exist as a consulting operation you can tap into for its business & financial network and strategic direction.

Let's discuss in PMs about that you're trying to do and what you need to get going. If I can get involved and we can collaborate, great. Else we'll have a productive discussion at the very least.

I'm located in the US. Ex-management consultant with strong tech & business strategy experience. Looking forward to seeing what type of response this receives. Feel free to introduce yourselves. What would be beneficial would be to start your message with the $ amount you'd be looking to raise and that'll help be screen these messages quicker. But I promise to reply to everyone who takes the time to reach me.

    Thanks.

How does someone come up with financial projections in a business plan?

    Posted: 22 Apr 2019 10:40 AM PDT

What are some good resources or strategies to come up with 3-5 year projections for expenses/income in a business plan?

We're a bakery that's getting to the point of needed some financial backing if we're going to grow more so we've been working on a solid business plan. Most of it is coming along nicely, but we're stumped by the previously mentioned section. It really seems like a complete guess. We sell at farmers markets and wholesale, but having our one place seems very different.

So, any suggestions or resources would be amazing. We need some help getting past this hurdle.

How do I explain to a relatively new business that their great need doesn’t bump them to the front of the line?

    Posted: 22 Apr 2019 10:52 AM PDT

This business is not good at prior planning, and I have gotten several calls, messages, and texts saying basically the same thing: we are out of your product! Can we get more today?

I have no product to give them, and have other customers expecting their products first.

So how do I politely explain to them, "Your lack of planning is not my fault, and I'm not going to bump you to the head of the line."?

[EDIT] I have received some great advice. Thank you to those who offered their opinions.

I have come to a compromise with the customer, and will deliver about half of their desired order today, and the rest later in the week.

I am also going to be crystal clear to them about future orders, and how long they will take.

Anyone here in the POS business? Have a question

    Posted: 22 Apr 2019 05:47 PM PDT

Let's say I started doing POS/terminal installs, and I had my own credit card processor (such as stripe, just on a smaller scale)

Would I be able to set up the POS with my credit card processor on to the systems and earn a percentage of each credit card sale, or am I missing something huge here?

What would be the ideal POS system for a business that has one physical location and a delivery service?

    Posted: 22 Apr 2019 04:33 PM PDT

Hello everyone, im going to start a new branch in my buisness. We give linen services to larger clients such as Hotels Hospitals and a few years ago we started with restaurants.

Recently, buisness has been slow and we are looking to expand into the market of rental homes. We plan on having the bulk of our new customers go to our location and get what they need there. Since we currently only deal with checks, the occassional credit card and cash payment, we need a POS system for these new customers who will want more steamlined credit card transactions.

I was thinking of Square or Intuit. Im not sure.

But just now i had the idea to expand this new technology to our restaurant clients, since we do deliveries to restaurants, it would have to be mobile, easy to use, and somewhat rugged. I was thinking of a device like what UPS drivers use where they scan the barcode, and the customer signs.

    What are your suggestions?

How to resell a related service that only another company can provide? Example given in post

    Posted: 22 Apr 2019 10:19 PM PDT

Say for example I own an established business that sells metal (trading).

Some customers, when purchasing metal from me, also want to do other things to it, for example polishing, which my business cannot provide. Normally when this happens, I outsource it to another company who specializes in metal polishing (let's call it Company Z).

This works very well when the customer does not bother to shop around for Metal Polishing, and just gets me to do it. I then approach Company Z who quotes me and I take a cut from it.

On the other hand (in fact, just the other day), sometimes I receive RFQs for Metal Polishing only from brand new leads (customers I've never dealt with nor sold metal to). These customers already have their own metal.

When I approached Company Z, they immediately knew which lead we were talking about (based on the description of the stuff to be polished) because that lead had shopped around and previously approached Company Z.

What I did was tell Company Z this - "Since the new lead already approached me, why don't you give me a lower quote than the one you gave the new lead and then we'll see if business can be done".

Of course this leaves me completely at the mercy of Company Z. For all I know, Company Z could pretend to give me a lower quote. Company Z basically has no need for me in this situation.

Is there any way at all I can create value and resell in such a situation? If you need more info, let me know.

    New To Government Contracting

    Posted: 22 Apr 2019 10:09 PM PDT

    Hello All,

I'm completely green to government contracting but want to make a career out of it for the long term. I've finished all the basics like LLC, DUNS and SAM Reg and am poised to start bidding. My primary NAICS Code is 334511, otherwise known as the Space Industry naics code (SEARCH, DETECTION, NAVIGATION, GUIDANCE, AERONAUTICAL, AND NAUTICAL SYSTEM AND INSTRUMENT MANUFACTURING). Here's the rub, I know nothing, not a single detail. I've Googled, searched Youtube, looked for books on Amazon with the intent of learning how to provide value but I've run into a brick wall. Maybe someone here has an answer?

I have a Navy background as an SH and MN. I've run my own drop shipping business for a time and (with a little push) can find a way to get things from point A to point B. Without divulging my entire resume, I also have a Mini MBA from Harvard. All in all, I just need help with a little direction. Thoughts?

Business model 'me' - tips to clear plate and stay fresh

    Posted: 22 Apr 2019 01:17 PM PDT

    Hi guys,
I have been a successful commercial artist for 15 years. I am well known in my field and somewhat well known publicly and have published books of my artwork.
I do not have any full-time employees but staff up with freelancers on a job by job basis, similar to a general contractor. Sometimes this is 5 people, sometimes it's 45 people. The jobs I take on are anywhere from 100K-750k, this is not just fees but includes the cost of production and post-production which can be considerable.
Because the business is based on my time, I outsource as much as humanly possible. However, I am at a point where I think I need to have a personal assistant/jack-of-all-trades on full time to try and clear even more off my plate so I can focus on what I'm best at and also not get burned out. If you want to consider this a business model, it's like a professional athlete or actor or surgeon. Very high paid when working so it's important to maximize the ability to work and stay fresh.
I am posting here to see if anyone is in a similar situation and if so, what would you recommend to try and 1) get more off my plate and 2) how to stay fresh and not burned out. For example, besides having an agent and manager (both of which I have, the latter on a job by job basis), what else would high paid athletes or actors do to get more off their plates? I'm thinking a personal assistant with a general skill set to handle the day to day work.
    Thank you!
PS - I will be the first to say I wish I had a business that wasn't centered around me. But the amount I make while working, doing what I'm doing, makes it crazy to walk away and buy or start another business. I also enjoy what I do (most of the time).

Does anyone know of a free or cheap rental inventory app or software?

    Posted: 22 Apr 2019 09:26 PM PDT

I have a very small party rental business that I am working on expanding so I want to start getting organized. I need a way to track how many tables, chairs, etc are still available for renting. I would just keep a simple spreadsheet, but it gets a bit complicated once I have overlapping rentals. Such as a 2 day rental that overlaps with a 3 day rental, it becomes more than I can figure out with a log and pivot table. Googling has come up with a few software names but I am not sure how to find out if it is a reputable software.

Does anyone know of an app, software, or even an Excel trick to deal with this type of scenario?

    Announce closing?

    Posted: 22 Apr 2019 11:46 AM PDT

So I have two years left on my lease and business is sloooooow. It's a very well liked place, like incredibly popular in ways but all kinds of factors are putting a damper on a realistic future. We all know how that is: when our favorite dive closes and everyone mourns and sobs but it's the old "nobody ever goes there anymore, it's too crowded" phenomenon. I've felt taken for granted from day one. I refuse to beg people to come in and I try to provide value but there so much more competition now and people just aren't going out like they used to. I feel like with Uber eats, Netflix and liquor stores, I just don't have anything to offer and the whole dynamic is changing.

I've considered changing my business model and have organically done that over 10 years but part of the charm is the uniqueness. Also, I personally don't think I want to work for a place that is drastically different or I wouldn't have done it this way in the first place. I don't want to invest in a whole rebranding and marketing push if I'm trying to attract young people with short attention spans. My regular customers have thanked me daily for existing and tell me about how they "grew up" with me. (Even though it's only been ten years, that's a big deal to someone in their 20's)

So my question is this: I'm pretty sure I can't renew my lease in 24 months at this rate and in this current state. Do I announce it now? Or do I keep this secret until the month before?

I'm trying to figure out what advantages there would be like, maybe it will boost business and people will quit taking us for granted. Maybe someone will offer to buy and continue the legacy. Maybe I will finally have the freedom and peace of getting the truth out there and quit feeling like a fraud wizard behind a curtain acting like everything is hunky dory month after month when I'm dealing with major issues (aging parents, growing personal debt, hitting my mid 50's and anxious about getting some more living in under my belt and not chained to a business)

Or will people scatter like rats off a sinking ship? Pretty sure everyone has been aware of the struggles the business has gone through especially lately and they are desperately telling me not to close but there's only so far sentiment can get you when you look at the bottom line.

    Who wants to chime in?

I figured doing it super early would provide some flexibility rather than it being a shock.

My sister is starting a small landscaping biz and needs some advice on the basics

    Posted: 22 Apr 2019 08:06 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I am new to this sub but not reddit. When my sister told me she wanted to start her own small (for now) landscaping business in the suburbs of the Bay Area where we live, I immediately thought that reddit would be a great place to get some tips and ideas.

Without having done thorough research on the subject on my own (but which I and she intend to do), I'm wondering if anyone can answer some basic questions:

    1. Can the business name be the same or similar to an already existing business in our state? This wouldn't be her intentionally naming the business after another; rather, she found out after she came up with her name idea that another gardening business has the same name. Does trouble only come in if that business's name is already trademarked? The name idea she has is not like a big gardening biz name (she's not trying to call her biz Home Depot Gardening, for example).
    2. If she wants to start the business slow and small, and likely will have her boyfriend helping her with the business, what should she register as? Sole proprietor? She'd like to eventually hire a few people as their income allows to help them run the business, but she would like to maintain financial control at least over the business.
    3. Liability issues. Since landscaping could potentially be "dangerous" (I'm thinking falling off a ladder, puncturing yourself or others with gardening tools, even something small like running over some plants with your truck while backing in), what precautions from a business perspective could she take to protect herself, her clients, and her potential employees? Does what type of business she registers as factor in here?

Any other suggestions that contain information in regard to first starting up a small business (my sister has zero experience running a business so this would all be new to her, and she is very smart so I'm not concerned she will fail miserably) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, all.

    Questions about Quikbooks.

    Posted: 22 Apr 2019 07:26 PM PDT

Could someone inform me on the advantages or disadvantages of quickbooks? I'm just starting up a small business and I have my first couple of payments coming in. I was recommended to use quickbooks to keep track of everything business related. When I looked online I saw it was roughly $200 but that it's an annual subscription and not a purchase? Is that correct? What would you recommend instead of quickbooks if anything?

I recently started a vending business. I followed the online checklist my state offers and, got everything done.

I was talking to a buddy of mine and he mentioned that because I vend "food" I have to talk to the department of health. Is this true?

I dont want to screw myself over by forgetting a step. I'm trying to be as thorough as possible.

Are you successfully generating leads / sales from PPC?

    Posted: 22 Apr 2019 04:23 PM PDT

    Hey Small Business Owners,

I'm trying to get a better idea of which PPC channels small business owners get the most value from!

It would help me out immensely if you could please fill out this survey: https://forms.gle/QtJimqzKkcPLmVpx6

Also, if there are any new and exciting ad networks you're on, please share! One I can think of is called "Samsung Places" powered by Hiya. Essentially Samsung phones come preloaded with a "Yelp" like function attached to their phone / map apps called Samsung Places. For instance, if you're looking for a dentist, you can go to Samsung Places and search "dentist", from there you'll be served ads which highlight dentist in your area! The ad listings look like Yelp, with reviews, description, map etc... Best part is there's one 1 ad position available per search query and you only get charged per call.

    Thank you in advance!

    2) running a privacy program - such as complying with customer's request to see or delete their data

    3) preparing for a compliance audit - either from insurance provider or partners such as facebook (they require compliance proof)
