Daily advice thread. All questions about your personal situation should be asked here

If your question is "I have $10,000, what do I do?" or other "advice for my personal situation" questions. If you are going to ask how to invest you should include relevant information, such as the following:

    • How old are you?
    • Are you employed/making income? How much?
    • What are your objectives with this money? (buy a house? Retirement savings?)
    • What is your risk tolerance? (Do you mind risking it at blackjack or do you need to know its 100% safe?)
    • What are you current holdings? (Do you already have exposure to specific funds and sectors?)
    • Any other assets? House paid off? Cars? Expensive significant other?
    • What is your time horizon? Do you need this money next month? Next 20yrs?
    • Any big debts?
    • Any other relevant financial information will be useful to give you a proper answer.

Be aware that these answers are just opinions of Redditors and should be used as a starting point for your research. You should strongly consider seeing a registered financial rep before making any financial decisions!

Bitfinex Used Tether Reserves to Mask Missing $850 Million, Probe Finds

    https://www.wsj.com/articles/bitfinex-used-tether-reserves-to-mask-missing-850-million-probe-finds-11556227031

Probably the most important cryptocurrency news in a while. I imagine crypto markets will be chaotic. If you have stuff on Bitfinex or in Tether, best to get out ASAP. Don't worry about the current small haircut. Really you should have stopped using Tether a long time ago, but if you continued to use it, you should have been looking for news like this.

We would expect to see a large gap in prices between bitfinex and other exchanges form. This gap is currently only 1.5%.

No value in the market anymore

Sky high valuations, good companies trebling in price over 5 years... how are you finding value in this market? All the stocks I want to buy are horrendously overpriced.

Buffett says investors would be served just as well buying an S&P fund as his own company's stock

    Posted: 25 Apr 2019 12:10 PM PDT

    https://www.cnbc.com/2019/04/25/buffett-says-investors-would-be-served-equally-well-by-sp-or-berkshire.html

"I think the financial result would be very close to the same," Buffett told the FT when asked if it would be better to own the S&P or Berkshire over a lifetime.

As one of history's most revered money managers, the billionaire has served as a model for a generation of investors with a frugal, bargain-based buying strategy.

Buffett has been candid about how difficult it is for Berkshire to match the stock market. He told CNBC in February "it has been a tough time to beat the S&P."

How is it that with 700k+ subscribers, the number of posts with 100+ up or down votes/ comments is so small?

Seems like a huge amount of subscribers aren't actively participating. Makes me suspicious of the actual number of subscribers or the efficacy/ utility of this subreddit.

In E*Trade, how would I set a stock up to sell automatically at a 10% gain?

    Posted: 25 Apr 2019 04:09 AM PDT

I'm a rather passive investor- I rarely check my stock posiitons more than once a month, since the daily rise and fall makes me stressed out!

I've got some stocks that are somewhat volatile (up and down a lot) and I'd like to automatically sell them when they gain 10% without having to monitor them all day. Is that possible?

    Junk Bonds vs S&P500

    Posted: 25 Apr 2019 01:28 PM PDT

I've read several comments here stating that Junk Bonds are highly correlated equity in that they react in a similar way in during both economic growth and downturn.

However, which one would you say is a more conservative investment (i.e less risky)?

Thank you in advance to anyone who answers.

Question about converting Traditional IRA to Roth

    Posted: 25 Apr 2019 03:04 PM PDT

I want to switch some, and eventually all of my Trad IRA (Only about $5600) over to my Roth. I am thinking about doing it first with a stock that I'm down big on, but plan on holding on to. The idea being that whatever I gain when the stock rebounds will be tax free. I have read up a bit on it but I wanted to avoid any unexpected consequences. I know that I'll have to pay taxes on whatever I convert. Here is a statement from my Schwab account:

If you choose to have taxes withheld, the amount withheld will be sent to the IRS. This may result in the withholding amount being treated as a distribution from your Traditional IRA and not considered part of your conversion. As a result, if you are under age 59½, you may be subject to a 10% federal early withdrawal penalty tax (and possibly state) on the tax withholding amount.

So it seems like I will be hit with a 10% penalty, in addition to any taxes owed. Is there any way around the early withdrawal fee? I am wondering if there are any more important details/consequences that I may not know about? Any advice is appreciated, thanks.

Over, then under $25k Day Trading

    Posted: 25 Apr 2019 06:21 PM PDT

So my account was over $25k today and I currently have 38 day trades for the week. Unfortunately my account has fallen under $25k and I still have 38 day trades under my account. If I wait a week and make no day trades will my 38 weekly day trades be gone and be given the privilege of being able to day trade 3 times a week again?

    Capturing a smaller market trend

    Posted: 25 Apr 2019 05:53 PM PDT

How would an active portfolio manager capture a smaller market trend. For example, say that a manager had a portfolio with a 20% cash position to capture small market corrections or small market developments. Would one use futures, options, or use etf options?
