Mother, 61, only has 12k saved for retirement and is choosing to invest in marijuana stocks Posted: 14 Apr 2019 08:23 AM PDT My mother just joined the cannabis investors association ( https://nicinvestors.com/about/ ) and told me about her investing plans. I know nothing about that particular market, but I'm very skeptical of this decision on her part. I sort of put it in the same category as bitcoin. I talked her down to starting with $1000 instead of investing $5k right out the door, like she was originally going to. I'm very hesitant to support her decision to pour what little money she has into something that is so new and probably quite volatile. Should I be concerned? What are some better alternatives for someone in my mom's situation? [link] [comments] |
Best way to invest 10k actively? Posted: 14 Apr 2019 10:09 PM PDT If I wanted to actively use my 10k to try to turn it into something more, what would be the best way? I'm hoping for it to be something to get me engaged while being able to turn a profit. I used to do it with skin trading in CSGO and I guess I'm looking for something similar. I know day trading is probably not the best way and has a high barrier to entry, which is why I'm asking. Doesn't necessarily have to be with the stock market. [link] [comments] |
Simple app to track a portfolio? Posted: 14 Apr 2019 05:08 AM PDT My portfolio is scattered in several brokers. Which app can I use to manually enter my lots and track its current status? I currently use Yahoo Finance but it's bloated. Tried Bloomberg and it's also meh. I want something nice and simple, kinda like the crypto trackers but for stocks/ETFs. The built in iOS app would be perfect but it just tracks prices, you can't enter your purchases. Any recommendations? Additional bonus if: * I can change base currency * I can add stocks from London and other exchanges * I get a nice pie chart with my allocations Thanks [link] [comments] |
If another Financial Crisis of '08 to reappear, what investments to put money into? Posted: 14 Apr 2019 05:47 PM PDT I will always continue to put money into my 401k but I do have some side money that I would like to speculate on. Like many others, I don't think the structural issues arising from the 2008 financial crises were fixed. Feels like we are on borrowed time. Instead of real estate triggering it, perhaps student loans? I'm curious, what stocks would you invest in if you think 2008 financial crisis would reoccur? Not sure if putting everything in cash is a wise idea or shorting stocks. Gold? Dollar Tree? McD? [link] [comments] |
Too many travelers, too few planes is U.S. airlines' 737 MAX summer dilemma Posted: 14 Apr 2019 01:24 PM PDT The effect of Boeing's MAX difficulty may exacerbate for carriers when planes run fullest during June, July, and August in the Northern Hemisphere, and revenue per available per seat mile is highest. Plane scarcity threatens to disarm quarterly earnings for carriers as the strain on fleets increases. United publishes results on April 16, Southwest on April 25, and American on April 26. What to do with Employee Options? Posted: 14 Apr 2019 07:12 AM PDT Hey guys First time posting here, and please let me know if it doesn't belong, happy to take it down. Long story short, I recently got a new job. As part of the last company I worked at we received options. It's a privately held company which is funded from investors/venture capitalists. They are net negative in terms of operating and the CEO has mentioned a few times that they do not plan to go public; however, I wouldn't be surprised if they sell the whole platform (SaaS) to a bigger company within the next 2-5 years. Right before I left, I received an email stating 750 of my options have vested. And then since I left to go to another company, I have 90 days to determine what to do with them. That said... I don't know really understand what this all means, what actions I can take, and lastly, what options should I take...? Looking for any advice or insights. What would you do in my situation? DIS call option 4/18 - what to do Posted: 14 Apr 2019 01:18 PM PDT i've got 40 options bought at $0.04 that expire on Thursday - currently valued at $3.43 how would you go about this for the rest of the week (sell options now or let it ride and hope DIS keeps rising?) [link] [comments] |

How to get free financial data? Posted: 14 Apr 2019 01:08 PM PDT Hello, I would like to have historical data for a few indices (MSCI EAFE, emerging markets, S&P 500, etc.). What is the best way to get the data? I have access to WRDS (Wharton Research Data Services), but it seems like it doesn't include data for indices. Is there a way to get the historical data for free? [link] [comments] |
18 year old getting started. Looking for tips & a Youtube channel on investing Posted: 14 Apr 2019 10:44 PM PDT Hey guys. I'm 18 years old and have a monthy income of about $600. I'm thinking of trying to invest $100-$200 of those dollars each month while young. I've got a lot of big ideas and know I'm going to want to have some cash to work with when I get out of uni and want to start on some crazy venture. Problem is. I'm young. And stupid. I'll try and find a good book on this sub to read but my preferred method of learning and getting into new communities is with YouTube. Grant Thompson has been a favorite of mine for personal finance, but I was wondering if you guys knew a good "not just trying to sell you a course" investment youtuber. To give you an idea of what I'm currently interested in; I'm thinking about randomly (with weight) putting each paycheck's investment into a few things: either a bank savings, the Vanguard Information Technology ETF, or Bitcoin (I'm a huge crypto nut. One of those guys who thinks it's a legitimate world changing technology. Don't try and change my mind because I'm too far gone to listen). But I'm just generally looking for the best way to save money in a more diversified way that'll hopefully not only force me to not spend that money on festival and plane tickets, but also make a little extra over the next 5-10 years (and build some good habits). Thanks everyone! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 15 Apr 2019 01:44 AM PDT Not sure if this is the correct r/ to post this, but it's the best I found. Please direct me to a better one if it's wrong here. I just came across a comment thread on r/talesfromtechsupport where female engineers were annoyed that so many trousers made to fit them have either only uselessly tiny pockets (too tiny to fit even their keys), or only the seam of where a pocket would be, or not even a hint of a pocket. Meanwhile, most trousers made for males have at a minimum two pockets big enough to fit a cellphone or wallet. This brought me to the idea that if there was a business that specialized in adding pockets to clothing (in a way that looks professional and like they might have been there from the beginning), said business would probably do quite well for itself. Especially if it was called something like "GiveMePockets", did a lot of its business online (customers would send in the offending clothing and get it sent back with the desired pockets) and directed part of its marketing towards the tech/engineering/mechanics sectors. Personally, I have no use for this idea, as I have no desire to start or otherwise co-own a business, no money to do it with, and live on the wrong continent anyways. So the next best thing is to at least see something like that pop up in the next decade and hopefully see it be successful (because I doubt clothing manufacturers would stop making pocketless trousers; and even if they did, people would still want additional or bigger pockets on their clothing). If someone thinks they can implement something like this properly, they're free to it. I'd rather see it appear and work, even without credit, than have it ignored because someone who could have done it didn't want to risk getting sued for "intellectual property theft". Posted: 14 Apr 2019 07:55 PM PDT Hello everyone! New to the sub- just finished Money Master the game - so I just want to start off saying I hope this doesn't break rule 2- since it's a general question. For some background- 25 yo Roth IRA with betterment- 32k Roth 401k with Fidelity- 7k Onto the question- If one wants to invest in the market- low fees- which company is better? I've done searching throughout the sub- and it seems like Vanguard is the go to. Is it worth going to fidelity if you have other investments there? Or is going straight to Vanguard the best thing one can do? [link] [comments] |
How can I trade domestic Japanese companies listed on Tokyo and Osaka stock exchange? Posted: 14 Apr 2019 10:04 AM PDT I live in the U.S and would like to buy securities traded on Tokyo and Osaka stock exchange. I have an account with TD Ameritrade but they only offer stocks traded on US and Canadian markets. Are there any Japan-based brokers that allow international individual investors? Since I will most likely be buying and hold, commissions aren't a big concern, but wouldn't mind low commission brokers. [link] [comments] |
How to view the US Bloomberg page when traveling internationally? Posted: 14 Apr 2019 07:34 PM PDT Residing outside the US and going to bloomberg.com defaults to current region. How can someone invest in a PRE IPO company like Carl Icahn did with Lyft Posted: 14 Apr 2019 10:06 AM PDT Say you have 100-500k and want to invest in Lyft like when Icahn did. How do you go about doing it? [link] [comments] |
Opinions on Seeking Alpha and the Motley Fool? Posted: 14 Apr 2019 12:36 PM PDT I use the iOS app Flipboard for my source of daily news. In addition to legit articles from Forbes and Barrons I keep seeing investment type articles from seeking alpha and the motley fool. Every time I read one of those articles about recommended REIT or High dividend stocks i go over to morning star and do a little research. Their recommendations are always shit. Am I wrong in thinking that these articles are also late to the game or bad advise? Just yesterday I was reading about some value stock article that had huge growth potential and the stock was at its 52 week high. The article was about 6 months too late. Opinions on these type of sites? [link] [comments] |

for those bullish on WWE, are you worried about competition from AEW? Posted: 14 Apr 2019 10:19 AM PDT AEW is a new promotion being funded by billionare Shahid Khan that is offering an alternative to the WWE and might be onto something. The last time the WWE faced real competition was in the mid 90s from another billionaire, Ted Turner, and they almost went bankrupt. They've been cruising since 2000 after buying out WCW with really no solid alternatives for wrestling fans. [link] [comments] |
If you race to save $100k in mutual funds by 30, can you stop investing? Posted: 14 Apr 2019 05:43 PM PDT According to https://www.daveramsey.com/smartvestor/investment-calculator, if you are 30 retiring at 67 with $100k expecting a 10% return, you'll retire with $3.4m. That probably isn't super realistic because as you age, you wouldn't be in something that 100% tracks the "volatile" market, but probably something more along the lines of a diversified portfolio with bonds. That would most likely drop the overly simplistic annual return rate of 10%. However, it's also super unrealistic that from 30-67, you'll never contribute another dollar to your savings/retirement again. How unrealistic is it to race to $100k by 30? I think I've read that the average American is probably woefully behind that, but I think across home equity/etc. the average American is probably pretty close to $50k-$75k net worth (excluding 30 year mortgage debt). How unrealistic are 10% YoY returns? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S%26P_500_Index#Annual_returns quotes 10.53% from 1970 - 2018. I don't know if I'm incorrectly not adjusting for inflation.
