Do chains employ/contribute to the economy more than Mom & Pop shops?

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 09:32 PM PDT

I have two sets of related questions. I was talking with a European friend about how the US is so full of chain restaurants and retail stores and that it's much less like that in Europe.

    1. Why is that?

    2. If you replaced all the chain locations with Mom and Pop shops, would that employ fewer people (I assume yes, since chain companies have large corporate teams as well as on-location employees)? How else would it impact the economy? Which business type "contributes" more to the economy (I realize that's a vague term)?

Does anyone have an online video course so that I can learn how to run a online store, how to start a clothing line and Instagram marketing?

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 08:29 AM PDT

I'm currently watching videos on how to draw and sew. I'm interested in becoming a professional artist and designer. I want to start by selling my artwork on Teespring or any related website. Also, sell my drawing services on Fiverr. Do I need to trademark or copyright my artwork? I don't have a business (license, EIN etc) yet.

I'm just working on my skills first and would just like to know take some courses on business to sell my work.

What could this mean? Managers vs Individual Contributors

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 02:47 PM PDT

My company (which will remain nameless) went through several re-orgs over the past few years, including a gutting of my dept last year which flattened the reporting structure. I, along with a handful, have survived.

In the time since, we have lost more 'individual contributors' (regular employees) by attrition, reducing our numbers and making it tough to actually get work done with fewer people.

Our management has told us they won't be hiring any more 'regular employees' until the next fiscal year, at the earliest, but in the meantime has been hiring a ton of management and other non 'individual contributor' roles, like administration positions. Bloating our management structure again.

My thought is they are gearing up to let the rest of us go and replace us with contract or offshore employees. Those of you versed in corporate strategy, what could be going on here?

How to get out of business credit card debt?

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 06:42 PM PDT

My business has been a bit slow this year and my business card is taking the load of it. I have set aside weekly payments for it but normal expenses always get in the way leaving me unable to pay what I charge on it fully causing a back log and revolving credit. I know the best way to approach this is to dedicate a set budget to it and try to stick to it as best as possible but I am open to other ideas to get out of this hole.

    Posting in newspaper for internship?

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 04:44 PM PDT

Would it be extremely weird for me to take an ad out in the local newspaper searching for an unpaid internship? I desperately need experience in an office like setting for my degree and haven't had any luck with conventional routes.

    Conversion to evaluate employee performance

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 01:30 PM PDT

So I work at a cellphone store and the company really pushes conversion on us and uses it to evaluate employee performance. Employees have been let go of due to poor conversion. I understand the use conversion does have for the company as a whole but I find some fault with it in evaluating employee performance.

Example, in my store we see the UPS and FedEx delivery guys everyday. So that's 60 ticks a month on conversion of people that aren't gonna make a purchase. But it still counts against us.

Everyone over four feet tall gets counted so at my store a group of teens wandering the mall stop in to browse the new phones that are out are counted against me when legally if they are under 18 I can't sell them new phones because they are not of legal age to enter into a contract. I get that if they pay completely for the phone they don't enter a contract is there is a possibility of a sale but how many teens are actually walking into a store with $1,000 to buy a phone.

I have other examples but my question for Reddit is, is it ok or good business practice to evaluate sales reps based on conversion or bad practice? I just find faults in the idea of conversion used in this way.

Which news websites do you recommend?

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 01:26 PM PDT

    Hi guys,

How are you? I hope everything is going fine. I was meaning to ask you for some advice. I personally believe that the best way to learn about how, literally, the world works is by reading the paper. Nevertheless, I wouldn't know where to start. And I'm really keen on spending big part of the day reading about these kind of topics Could you recommend good websites with news about business, economy and politics? And if I my ask, preferably free sites (I'm from a country where you don't have to pay for national news so I'm kinda unused to spending money in the paper)

Thank you very much and take care!

How could I help people sell their stuff on FB marketplace/Kijiji with great marketing, taking care of logistics, side hustle

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 07:24 AM PDT

    hi

so the post, as the title explains, is to ask anyone about how I could help people sell their crap for a fee (like take commission, say 30% of what it would sell for).

Is there a platform for this? Although I kind of doubt it because it would require me actually having the product on hand.

I'm really great at selling my used stuff online, from taking photos, good descriptions, meeting up with people, pricing accordingly, and realized there is market for this. My sisters ask me all the time to help them out.

But other than people trusting me and it going through word of mouth, I was thinking of finding a better system to make a little extra cash on the side by doing something I'm good at, and it helps other people too! I know a lot of people would love to sell their stuff but are lazy.

How would payment work? (how would they know how much I sold it for without me getting questioned all the time (I don't want to deal with buyer management AND client management), if I reduce the price to sell, so what's the minimum they'll sell for, their timeframe, etc) I'm trustworthy but these people don't know me so, if anyone has suggestions I'm all ears & appreciate.

Should I get paid for this trip?

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 01:00 PM PDT

I'm a User Experience Designer living in the US, and one of my new-ish clients in Europe wants to fly me out to meet the rest of their quickly growing team for a few days. They told me they will pay for my flight and accommodations for the trip, but we haven't discussed payment for my time while I'm there.

This is my first time navigating this kind of trip and I'm curious, is it typical to be flown out for a "getting to know each other" trip and to not get paid, other than the trip being covered, Or should I assume that they are planning to pay me my hourly rate for the time I spend with them at their office?

I know I will need to talk this through with my client, but I'm wondering what's typical, so I have that as a baseline.
