    I'm the bottom lol

I'm completely burnt out, but thinking of sticking it out for one more busy season to see how it is working a more "normal" B4 schedule. What would you do?

    Posted: 17 Apr 2019 07:08 PM PDT

Currently B4 Audit in a large metro area. I'm about to be promoted to senior in a couple of months and finally managed to get off of my hellish client that has essentially ruined my life for the past 2 years. I hate my job at the moment, but I don't think I've gotten the true B4 experience I willingly signed up for.

I started during the fall and immediately got placed on a public 9/30 year-end client; thrown straight to the wolves, working 65-70+ (or more) hour weeks my first day on the job. I also had absolutely nothing in common with any other member of my team and grew to resent every second of every day I spent there (though I did not show this openly). Team was/is insanely high strung and stressful and has the culture of "no one can leave until I can, even if you have gotten every one of your assignments done for the day plus the two others we gave you on top of that," which meant very late nights 6 and sometimes 7 days a week. To top it all off, the client isn't even in the industry I'm assigned to - the industry that is the entire reason I chose this firm over several other offers. After that audit finished up, oh wouldn't you know, I have another 3-4 months of busy season to look forward to. Same thing happened next year but way worse this last time around. So I have basically been in busy season mode for close to 12 months out of the year and a half I have been with the firm.

Don't get me wrong, I was and still am fully prepared to put in the hours to get experience and advance my career, especially if it's on a team with people who I actually enjoy. But, I just am so burnt out from my personal life suffering (losing several girlfriends due to lack of time, not being able to do anything with friends, etc.). I'm thinking of sticking it out for another busy season to gain the experience in the industry I eventually want to go into, but I haven't been officially assigned to senior a new client in that industry yet, and the linkedin messages get more and more tempting every day. Has anyone else ever been in a similar situation and, if so, what did you do? Or, if not do you have any advice you'd give?

Sorry for the block of text/rant; sometimes I guess it just feels good to vent to people who can relate a little. Any and all input is appreciated!

Boss keeps making jokes about me being dumb/ditzy

    Posted: 17 Apr 2019 12:43 PM PDT

So far I've told myself to not take it personally because he's just "teasing", but I am pretty much at a breaking point.

Today I got a scam email and I was asking about it, then my boss was certain I was about to fall for the scam (I wasn't) and made kind of some asshole remarks.

Just now with the CEO he made a comment about how many times it took me to pass the CPA exams before getting licensed. He was never able to pass it and gave up after his first attempt.

I'm starting to get really bothered by this and I find it disrespectful and counterproductive. Should I bring it up to him that I'm feeling offended by his comments? Ignore them? We are a small company, there's unfortunately no "reporting it". Also when my coworker is around, she joins in on making fun of me.

***Thank you everyone, I appreciate each and every comment.

I love my job and don't want to leave. I've decided to ditch any self deprecating humor at work and will work out some cool comebacks as I get ready in the mornings talking to myself in the mirror

How bad is this Big 4 performance review? Is it possible to recover? Is it even possible to get such a poor review?

    Posted: 17 Apr 2019 08:45 PM PDT

I came in as an experienced hire a few months back and got back my first performance review. On a 1-5 scale, 5 is the worst and 1 is the best. Both the senior manager and manager gave me three 5s (not at level) and two 4s (partially at level). I found the rating to be extremely harsh, but I didn't provide a rebuttal because I didn't really see a point in debating about something they've already agreed on together.

I worked exclusively for my senior and really feel like she was the one who threw me under the bus. My team didn't like me and my senior especially so.

Is it possible to recover from this? If I keep receiving poor reviews, I may leave this field altogether - I'm not even an accounting major (honestly I think a partner hired me because he was enamored by my fancy shiny college degree and quantitative background). The only accounting classes I've taken are financial accounting (A-) , intermediate I (A+), and intermediate II (A-).

I really don't want to work myself to death in order to impress the higher ups. I fell really ill from staying in the office for 15 hours a day + weekends.

I was told that most staff get 3s. I got 4s and 5s, which is a total joke given my long-standing history of strong work ethic. I got 5s for relationships, leadership, and technical abilities. I think of the five categories, these three are the most important.

Does anyone have any tips/cheats to remember the main differences between S, C, and Partnership rules for REG? I am struggling

    Posted: 17 Apr 2019 05:08 PM PDT

This is my last exam and I am struggling with this. I already failed REG with a 65. I am losing motivation. How does anyone on earth supposed to remember every single nuance? Any tips or ways to remember all the distribution, property rules for different forms of business? I fucking hate this shit. I FUCKING HATE IT.

    Just got laid off abruptly

    Posted: 17 Apr 2019 08:38 AM PDT

I just got fired (presumably due to performance this busy season) from a small firm without warning, so I haven't put my resume out anywhere. I commuted 1.5 hours each day and would be working, or preparing to go to work from 4:45 A.M. until 8-9 PM 4 days per week, with 9 hour days the other 2, so I spent this past 3 months extremely sleep deprived. They offered to pay me "through the week"--- the pay period ends next Friday and I have rent to pay while searching for work.

I don't think I will struggle to find work because I have my MTax, good grades, and a busy season under my belt, but I was wondering if I should apply for unemployment just in case I don't find anything immediately. If I do, will future employers be able to see that I did? I wish my employer allowed me time to send my resume out before doing this.

    Thanks

Make the switch now within Advisory?

    Posted: 17 Apr 2019 08:50 PM PDT

Been with B4 firm 10 months now. They just posted opportunities to transfer roles within my service line (Internal Audit to TAS/Strategy) which I am definitely interested in as it a) pays more b) would allow me to transfer to a new city (been wanting this for a while c) has better career prospects

Would it be dumb to try to make the switch after having only been at the firm 10 months as opposed to waiting longer? Would it be looked upon poorly like I'm not giving my all in my current role/ giving myself time to grow/adjust? I am currently in a key role on our office's largest client, so I'd be surprised if anyone was willing to support me in the move at this time. My reason for wanting the switch is purely based on thinking forward in my career. I truly do enjoy the work I am currently doing and have a great team.

Graduating School Soon, don't know how much to ask in salary

    Posted: 17 Apr 2019 05:04 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

So I'm a senior in college about to graduate (I have another year here though, 5 year MBA program). I interned at a particular firm in New Jersey for the last 2 summers, and also did some work this tax season. I'm meeting with one of the partners sometime in the next few weeks to discuss working there full time, and I'm not sure exactly what I should be asking for in terms of salary, benefits, bonuses, etc. Here's the information I have:

    • I plan on getting my CPA within 2 years
    • I have to pay back a lot in student loans over the coming years (nearly $170k)
    • I would like to work in tax, but I would be fine working in audit. (I've basically been an intern in both fields)
    • I've put in a lot of work for the firm (2 summers working full time, and putting in 25-30 hour weeks this tax season while also going to school full time)
    • I worked an hourly wage as an intern but would like to be salaried post-graduation

If anyone could help me figure out what I should be looking for in compensation, that'd be greatly appreciated. Seriously I have no clue what I should be looking for here they don't teach you this shit.

    Where's my raise??

    Internship for 1 yr+

    Posted: 17 Apr 2019 08:32 PM PDT

I began my internship on August, 2018. They offered me to stay one semester after another. The way it seems, they will let me work as an intern until graduation which is this December. After that, who knows.

Anyhow, that will be 1 year and some months just as an intern at 1 company. My question is, how is this reflected and viewed in my resume (given that I don't get full time offer and go on a job search)..? Should I try to get different types of accounting experience before graduating, or stick around?

How do I include discounts in my monthly revenue targets?

    Posted: 17 Apr 2019 08:11 PM PDT

I own an SaaS application in which users can subscribe on monthly or yearly basis and pay based on their requirements. We have two tiers called "Silver" and "Gold" and the prices are $10/month and $20/month respectively.

Now, I created one Sheet in which I have set monthly revenue targets. My targets are based on how many subscribers I have on each tier. For example, Currently April is going on and Right now, We have 100 silver subscribers and 30 gold subscribers which means the monthly revenue calculation would be (100*10)+(30*20).

Then I forgot about one thing. Discounts! We provide discounts on transactions. Let's say, one person is signing up for our services for 1 year and he is applying 15% off coupon code while checkout. And it might happen multiple times with different discount amounts.

How can I include discounts in monthly targets? If I do not set discounts, the actual revenue and the targeted revenue will differ.

And if I decide to subtract X% from the revenue as discount, I would not be able to create coupons with different amount of discount like 30% 10%, etc.

I know I might be taking a wrong approach here but I want some help from you guys to figure this out. Throw some numbers here, lol, I don't think it is as hard as advanced accounting.

    Unemployed Graduate looking for advice

    Posted: 17 Apr 2019 03:32 PM PDT

Hey guys. I graduated in June 2018 with a 2.8 gpa and no internship or accounting experience. My plan was to pass at least 2 of the CPA sections before recruiting in the fall and internship recruiting in winter. My idea was that I would go to networking events having FAR, BEC and AUD under my belt and showing that I was serious about accounting.

Well that plan didn't work out because I failed BEC, AUD and FAR. I still went to the events just to network and hoping that by some chance I could get an interview. Only interview I got was RSM but I didn't get an offer.

I passed BEC and AUD on my second try but this is after recruiting season so I don't have anything lined up for this summer. Since March I've tried applying to internships, AR/AP, and staff accounting positions through linkedin, indeed, and ziprecruiter but no one has followed up on me. I've even tried cold calling local cpa firms if they had any internships but they said no.

So far, I am studying to retake FAR and I hope to pass REG by 2019 fall recruiting. But I am seriously doubting my abilities to get any interviews even if I passed all four sections. I want to get into public accounting but I fucked it up with my gpa and having no experience. I'm not sure what I should do to get in. Any advice?

Edit: I just got a call regarding an AP clerk position. Should I take it?
