Resource(s) to learn about the basics of trading and reading earnings reports

    Posted: 21 Mar 2019 02:11 PM PDT

I'm looking for any resources (podcast, book, video series, etc) to learn about stocks. How to read earnings reports and UNDERSTAND what they are saying. I did not major in finance in college and i want to learn more about investing. Any resources that have helped you in the past are welcomed. I have a very low base understanding of the financial system. My goal would be to be able to invest in a company and understand why it is a good investment, rather than just investing in big names and hoping they do well (Apple/ Microsoft/ Visa, etc)

Buying a stock with a high dividend and shorting the exact # of shares

    Posted: 21 Mar 2019 02:01 PM PDT

    Hi,

Does anyone know if you are allowed to buy x shares of stock Y and short x shares of the same stock Y? Assuming Y paid a dividend, (let's say 6%), wouldn't that completely eliminate your exposure on the price fluctuation but entitle you to a guaranteed dividend which would exceed that of holding a single long position that could deteriorate over time?? Or am I missing something here?

GE stock is way down - will it recover?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2019 01:53 PM PDT

My inheritance from my grandparents was some of their GE stock. This quarter I got a $3 dividend. Grandpa would be sad that he worked his whole life for this.

Lyft: Risky Valuation and No Intellectual Property

    Posted: 21 Mar 2019 09:48 AM PDT

Lyft went from a $7 billion valuation in 2017 to a $15 billion valuation in 2018 and is now seeking a $20-$25 billion valuation on the public markets. The problem with this rising valuation is that losses are progressive with $2.6 billion in revenue in 2018 but a $911.3 million loss. Due to these losses, Lyft may need to borrow or raise more equity after its first year on the public market, which means debt or dilutive stock offerings.

Lyft's sales, on the other hand, appear positive on the surface with incredible growth year-over-year from $343M in 2016 to $1.05 billion in 2017 and 100%+ growth in 2018 at $2.15 billion. The problem is that the losses are also accelerating.

Is it time to sell Apple before their upcoming press conference next week? They've been going way up on the rumors.

Here are my kinematic stock models: comments, discussion, and suggestions welcome! (March 21, 2019)

    Posted: 21 Mar 2019 06:41 AM PDT

Seventh post in the series! Thanks so much everyone for your feedback, ideas, discussions, bug reports, motivation, etc.

Backtesting example: DIA predicting 3 days into the future, 67% accuracy, size of moves within 12%: https://imgur.com/X2GEd8F

Quick Explanation: this approach is based on kinematic principles, which is the branch of physics and mathematics describing the motions of objects without necessarily understanding the underlying forces at play. My script runs a loop from 50 to 10 days, and for each period computes the SMA and its first three derivatives, which I then combine via a weighted average with the weights set by the inverse of each SMA period. The first derivative is analogous to the stock's "velocity" (in %/day), the 2nd derivative is its "acceleration" (%/day^2), and the third derivative is the "jerk", or change in acceleration (%/day^3). Using these three parameters, I extrapolate the price of each stock on my watchlist 3 days into the future (previously 10) in order to inform my own trading strategy.

This approach is highly simplistic: it involves no tracking of news feeds, expectations of financials, etc. (in other words, the forces behind the movements). It is simply based on the motions of each stock. I'd be interested to hear if anyone has tried a similar strategy, or has any comments/questions. If you'd like your favorite stock added, just let me know.

Source code can be found on github: https://github.com/stockscientist/sma_optimize_stocks

Also, I recently found this paper on a similar topic in case anyone else is interested: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/46461895_Kinematics_of_stock_prices

Disclosure: First and foremost, I attempt to make no claim whatsoever for how well these predictions will hold. They are simple extrapolations of existing trends, and will certainly change in the future. Second, I likely own positions in several of the highest ranked tickers on this list.

    Cheers!

    SPY Trading Strategy

    Posted: 20 Mar 2019 06:59 PM PDT

I've been trading SPY for a while and I wanted to share this strategy. It doesn't come up very often but typically when it does it creates a great day trading opportunity and sometimes even a nice overnight hold. It's based off the 15minute chart using the Money Flow Index (MFI).

First, I use MFI religiously. My trading style compliments overbought/oversold stocks. I noticed that with the 15 minute chart on SPY anytime the MFI has a reading BELOW 20(which is oversold territory) there is a reversal. Sometimes the reversal is quick and a fast $1.50-$2.00 movement occurs. Other times the movement is a bit slow and the run up is only about a $1.00. However, I've noticed that EVERY time this set-up occurs the reversal happens. It's wild. I ran this strategy back to September and couldn't find a time where it failed. Even through the bearish months.

Today at the end of the trading day SPY dropped quite a bit and the MFI fell hard and right when it got to a reading of about 8-10 it reversed back up.

I encourage anyone to go backtest it.

    Hope someone enjoys this!

Anyone else shop for some Qurate Retail Inc (QRTEA) today?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2019 11:44 AM PDT

    I started a small position today in QRTEA @ $16.98 a share.

I've never heard of this stock before, but I am familiar with QVC and HSN although I didn't know people still shop their haha

I seen that QRTEA was oversold and figured I'd take a shot at it. I'm not going long unless this trade goes bad and I'm forced to average down.

I'm only looking to make a 5% gain on this and then I'm rolling that into the next oversold stock. I have my sell limit order at $17.83.

" In July 2017, Liberty Interactive announced that later that year it would spin off its "cable holdings and other non-retail assets" into the new company Liberty Ventures, with Liberty Interactive to be renamed QVC Group. QVC Group will consist of QVC, HSN, Cornerstone Brands, and Zulily. " from Wikipedia

"We are seven leading retail brands, reaching approximately 380 million homes worldwide through 15 television networks and multiple ecommerce sites, social pages, mobile apps, print catalogs and in-store destinations." Their website

    Why is the stock oversold?

"The stock's decline follows the company's fourth-quarter results. While revenue for the period was in line with what analysts were expecting, adjusted earnings per share were below the consensus analyst estimate for the key metric." Fool.com
