Daily advice thread. All questions about your personal situation should be asked here

    Posted: 28 Mar 2019 05:13 AM PDT

If your question is "I have $10,000, what do I do?" or other "advice for my personal situation" questions. If you are going to ask how to invest you should include relevant information, such as the following:

    • How old are you?
    • Are you employed/making income? How much?
    • What are your objectives with this money? (buy a house? Retirement savings?)
    • What is your risk tolerance? (Do you mind risking it at blackjack or do you need to know its 100% safe?)
    • What are you current holdings? (Do you already have exposure to specific funds and sectors?)
    • Any other assets? House paid off? Cars? Expensive significant other?
    • What is your time horizon? Do you need this money next month? Next 20yrs?
    • Any big debts?
    • Any other relevant financial information will be useful to give you a proper answer.

Be aware that these answers are just opinions of Redditors and should be used as a starting point for your research. You should strongly consider seeing a registered financial rep before making any financial decisions!

Billion-dollar startup Zoom filed to go public — and shares of a totally unrelated company also called called Zoom shot up 1,100% (Business Insider)

    Posted: 28 Mar 2019 06:19 AM PDT

    • Zoom Video Communications, a $1 billion startup, filed for its much-anticipated IPO on Friday.
    • Zoom Technologies, a completely unrelated company, saw its shares spike 1,100% in the aftermath.
    • That company trades under the ticker symbol "Zoom," which likely led to some confusion by trigger-happy investors.
    • Zoom Technologies appears to be a mostly-defunct telecommunications company that hasn't reported earnings since 2011, and trades as an over-the-counter stock.

Buffett on the economy: 'It looks like things have slowed down'

    Posted: 28 Mar 2019 10:59 AM PDT

    https://www.cnbc.com/2019/03/28/buffett-on-the-economy-it-looks-like-things-have-slowed-down.html

"It does look like the pace of increase in the economy has slowed down," Warren Buffett tells CNBC's Becky Quick. "I'd call it somewhere close to noticeably, but I wouldn't go beyond that."

Buffett noted that a slowdown in BNSF, the railroad company owned by Berkshire, is flashing a signal of slower growth, but added that some of the data may be distorted by seasonal factors, such as the weather.

His comments come as fears of an economic slowdown have driven Treasury yields down sharply.

Left my old job and I think the company will tank (not because I left, but because of their strategy). Am I allowed to take a position against the company, given that I worked for them (and thus know a lot about their strategy)?

In light of political developments, is healthcare at a significant risk going into the 2020 presidency?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2019 09:17 PM PDT

One party is running on the platform of medicare for all, which as far as I can tell, will not benefit the healthcare insurance industry, or the sector as a whole, from a shareholder standpoint.

    What is your opinion?

The national bank of Belgium (BNB) offers a divividend of 6% Which is extraordinary in these TINA times. But what is the catch (flipside?)

Extra: what is the business model (I assumed a national bank to be non-profit).

    Thanks!

The African continent is projected to experience an explosive population growth over the next 30 years. Which companies are best positioned to meet the needs of this new, stabilizing population? How would you invest in Africa's future?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2019 07:32 AM PDT

    From Wikipedia:

By 2070, the bulk of the world's population growth is predicted to take place in Africa: of the additional 2.4 billion people projected between 2015 and 2050, 1.3 billion will be added in Africa, 0.9 billion in Asia and only 0.2 billion in the rest of the world. Africa's share of global population is projected to grow from 16% in 2015 to 25% in 2050 and 39% by 2100, while the share of Asia will fall from 60% in 2015 to 54% in 2050 and 44% in 2100. The strong growth of the African population will happen regardless of the rate of decrease of fertility, because of the exceptional proportion of young people already living today. For example, the UN projects that the population of Nigeria will surpass that of the United States by 2050. The population of the more developed regions is slated to remain mostly unchanged, at 1.2 billion, as international migrations from high-growth regions compensate the fertility deficit of richer countries.

Anyone know of any funds with substantial positions in these types of investments? Looking for other funds along the lines of FBGRX which holds JUUL, Uber, SpaceX, Topgolf, etc., or, RPGAX with it's substantial exposure to the Blackstone Offshore Hedge Fund.

Interactive Brokers web UI: is it not working only for me?

I've been using IB since January, and their web client UI behaves like crap ever since. Today when I'm logged in I can't see neither my portolio, my balances, not even my watchlists.

Why could people recommend them, if they unreliable to such extent?

S&P: Top 25 and Bottom 25 of the S&P 500 since the equities crash of '09

    Posted: 28 Mar 2019 08:44 AM PDT

Pretty interesting look at how the current constituents of the S&P 500 have performed since the crash of '09.

-Oil stocks dominated the Bottom 25.

-NVIDIA is the only semiconductor to make the Top 25.

    -Netflix - wow!

    >>The ranking is based on total return (which includes the effects of dividend/share buy backs etc) not Mkt Cap.

Why is the DOW still relevant?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2019 07:35 AM PDT

It fails to capture an index of the market as it ignores multiple hundred billion+ tech companies.

The SP500 is significantly more reflective of market performance. So why is DOW still popular?

New Jersey jury clears J&J of liability in latest talc cancer trial

    Posted: 28 Mar 2019 10:14 AM PDT

    https://www.cnbc.com/2019/03/27/new-jersey-jury-clears-jj-of-liability-in-latest-talc-cancer-trial.html

A New Jersey jury on Wednesday cleared Johnson & Johnson of liability in a lawsuit by a man who alleged asbestos in the company's talc-based products, including baby powder, caused his mesothelioma.

I've posted on here before about this issue. The scientific evidence of talc powder causing cancer seems to be pretty mixed and in favor of talc not causing cancer (based on the aggregated research I've seen posted on this sub). No matter what, trial lawyers have a lower burden of proof in civil court relative to criminal court. In these instances, it's about convincing a jury of laymen about the science of talc powder research - not a scientific or regulatory body. As such, I still think J&J will face at least the liability of having to constantly defend against attacks by trial lawyers looking for settlement money.

J&J and Microsoft remain the only companies to have a AAA credit rating - that's a better credit rating than the USA itself.

My Lyft shares are locked up for 6 month

    Posted: 28 Mar 2019 10:57 AM PDT

I own Lyft shares, which I bought a bit more than two years ago. Those shares are having a holding period of 6 month post IPO. I wonder whether I should somehow secure my holding at the price levels currently expected after IPO and how I best do that. Will there be put options available on the market?

    Easy profit call spread?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2019 09:33 PM PDT

So i was messing around learning and playing with options and this call spread strategy seems verry legit, i just look for options with more upside difference in premium paid compared to the value in price between strike prices. for example here

2,50$ difference in strike price, but 2,52$ difference in premium paid

please help me understand if this is a good way to go?
