JPM Analyst says no one reads 10-K's anymore Posted: 27 Feb 2019 02:17 PM PST This morning on CNBC they interviewed JPM's lead analyst for GE, and while they debated over the numbers and projections, he argues his math and reasoning are right if "you look over the 10-K, which no one really does." That really surprised me, as I was under the impression most annual reports are put under the microscope by investors. I know I do. So I'm just curious is he right? [link] [comments] |

What are all the ways a company can depress short-term earnings for long term value? Posted: 28 Feb 2019 02:25 AM PST I'd like to make a list of all the different ways companies depress their earnings for future value. Obviously, the general theme is investing cash for the future, but I want to hear the actual business level decision. I just thought of a few, but I'm sure there are a lot more examples. Would you mind contributing some examples? For example, companies that switch to a subscriptions model from a sales model. (Adobe, Microsoft) Companies that incur heavy expenses to install a customer, but attaches long term high margin maintenance contracts (Rolls Royce, Otis Elevator). Companies that spend heavy on R&D that dont contribute to revenues (Google) Companies that spend heavy marketing dollars to acquire long term users where acquisition cost is expensed immediately (Wix) Companies investing heavily in content where the production cost is expensed this year, but value may last longer (Netflicks) [link] [comments] |
