    Need advice on PG&E stocks

    Posted: 09 Feb 2019 12:08 PM PST

Okay so I'm new to stocks and I've been looking at PG&E right now and could use some advice. I understand that they are quite volatile right now due to everything going on, but they have a P/E of 3.71 and a P/BV of 0.37. I know the company is on the verge of filing for bankruptcy, but with a P/BV like that isn't that a good thing? I thought the P/BV told you that if you invest the P/BV amount (in this case 0.37) you will receive 1 dollar if the company liquidates. If the company goes under I should make money, and if it doesn't the P/E is very good as well. I feel like I'm missing something because this seems to good to be true, but I haven't seen anyone talking about it. Would really appreciate some advice!

I would assume that their stock prices would be increasing at about the same rate. However, a simple google search would reveal otherwise.

Can someone help explain chart for PTMC?

    Posted: 09 Feb 2019 09:52 AM PST

I came across this ETF (PTMC). Starting in October 2018, the price seems to be locked within $30-$31, but volume is high. What would cause something like this to happen?

Wall Street Week Ahead for the trading week beginning February 11th, 2019 [News, Earnings, etc.]

    Posted: 09 Feb 2019 08:25 AM PST

Hey what's shaking r/stocks! Good morning and happy Saturday to all of you on this subreddit. I hope everyone made out pretty nicely last week in the market, and are ready for the new trading week ahead! :)

Here is everything you need to know to get you ready for the trading week beginning February 11th, 2019.

Trade could be the biggest market catalyst in the week ahead - (Source)

The earnings deluge continues and inflation reports are due, but it will be the tone of trade talks in Beijing that could have the biggest impact on markets in the week ahead.

U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin head to China, as the U.S. and Chinese still appear to be far apart on trade differences, ahead of a March 1 deadline on new tariffs.

Stocks were spooked Thursday and were weak Friday after White House top economic adivsor Larry Kudlow said differences between the two countries are "pretty sizeable" and the White House confirmed there are no plans yet for President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping to meet.

"I think it's a very big deal, but I think this whole process is one to manage expectations, and the market, I think, is being set up for positive news. I think if some good news comes out next week, it will be a very positive event for the market. If not we could see some sideways volatility," said Don Townswick, head of equities at global investment management firm Conning.

Earnings will continue to rumble in from names including Cisco Systems, Coca-Cola and Pepsi, as another 60 S&P 500 companies report. Earnings for the fourth quarter have been up about 16 percent, but S&P 500 companies have warned that expectations were too high and now first quarter earnings are likely to show an actual decline.

"Obviously, last year's earnings were supercharged. This year, what looks like a negative year in terms of earnings growth is relative to last year," Townswick said. Many strategists point to the massive corporate tax cuts as being a big contributor to the pop in 2018 earnings growth, which reached 23 percent.

Besides earnings, there is some important data, particularly December's retail sales Friday and CPI consumer inflation Wednesday. Producer inflation is expected on Thursday. The inflation data will be especially important after the Fed indicated, following its January meeting, that it was willing to pause in its rate hiking and that inflation remain subdued.

February Expiration Week: S&P 500 Up 11 of Last 13

February's option expiration day has been down more often than not over the past 25 years with an average loss of 0.25% for S&P 500. Despite a bumpy finish, expiration week as a whole has fared better, but nets an average gain of just 0.39% on the S&P 500 since 1994 with 16 of 25 winning weeks. More recently, S&P 500 has advanced in eleven of the last thirteen options expiration weeks. The week after, has been down 13 of the last 25 years. DJIA and NASDAQ have similar patterns over the same timeframe.

Full Year Gains in 10 of the Last 11 Pre-Election Years with Positive January Indicator Trifecta

From recent posts and the 2019 Stock Trader's Almanac we know that pre-election years have historically been the best year of the four-year-presidential cycle and a positive January Trifecta has also been historically bullish for the market. The impact of a positive January Trifecta in pre-election is not as powerful as other years of the cycle because pre-election years are typically quite positive however, the Trifecta does raise the ceiling. In the following chart of DJIA, S&P 500 and NASDAQ, the one-year seasonal patterns for "All Years," "Pre-Election Years," "Trifecta Pre-Election Years" and 2019 have been plotted. Declines in October are the result of the crash in 1987.

    High Yield Stalls

Just like the broader market this week, the rally in high yield credit stalled out a bit. Earlier on Friday, we highlighted the fact that the S&P 500 ran into resistance right at its 200-DMA earlier this week and has been pulling back ever since. In the case of the ETF that tracks the high yield credit market (HYG), we have seen a similar setup. Coming off the lows in December, high yield was a little bit late to the rally, but it quickly made up any lost ground and has since followed the move in the S&P 500 step for step. In fact, this week HYG even managed to briefly trade above its 200-DMA. In this case, though, HYG ran out of momentum pretty much right at the same spot (~$85) where recent bounce attempts also ran out of steam.

The fact that these rallies in both high yield and the broader equity market are stalling out right at key moving averages is no doubt a focus of technicians, but given the magnitude of the moves off the lows, they had to take a break at some point, so why not at a point where everyone was expecting it. The only test now is whether there are enough bids below current levels to support the market, or will sellers eventually overwhelm the balance.

The Bespoke Report — The Resistance!

The S&P 500 finished the week with a slight gain after posting positive returns early in the week and declines late in the week. Friday saw declines early in the day, but investors really stepped up their buying in the afternoon to fully erase what had been a pretty sizable decline. Friday's late-day strength was a microcosm of the intraday buying trend we've seen all year.

As shown in the chart below, the S&P 500 has rallied in the last hour of trading on 80% of trading days over the last five weeks going back to the start of 2019. Readings of 80% or higher have been rare over the last 10 years dating back to the start of the bull market in 2009.

US Citizen Trading on ASX Market?

    Posted: 09 Feb 2019 08:18 AM PST

I'll admit to having been pretty busy today so my Googling may not have been perfect, but I haven't found many conclusive answers about trading on the ASX market. I have a company in mind that is only listed on ASX and, as an American citizen, I wonder if the process to buy shares is going to be complicated?

For what it's worth, I was thinking of dealing with CMC Markets to buy into the company.

Will my US information/ID, etc. be enough to start the account and start trading ASX-listed companies without further complications?

    Call mechanics question

    Posted: 09 Feb 2019 09:57 AM PST

Let's say stock ABC is selling for $50.50 per share and there is a call option for a $45.50 call. The premium is $4.99. So let's say that gives you a breakeven percent of -0.02%. If you buy that contract and the stock price doesnt move can you immediately cash in for a 0.02% profit?

Question about how stocks that have already been beaten down tend to do in bear market

    Posted: 08 Feb 2019 10:40 PM PST

Let's assume we will get a bear market, purely for the sake of discussion.

Take AAL. 52-high is around 60. It's now trading at 36. That's almost 50% off already.

Historically, it looks rangebound between 30 and 45. Didn't crash considerably during the September 2015 or February 2016 downturns.

So, in the event we get a bear market, is AAL likely to crash significantly more than it already has or will the drop be more tempered because it has dropped so much already?

One last point: the stock other than having quite some debt seems to be doing fine fundamentally. Beat earnings (barely, but still a beat) and no major scandals or problems.

Thoughts? If you can, citing past examples or data could be helpful and could avoid mere speculation (or what some might call WAG or a crystal ball).

Edit: DAL is in a similar boat, but with much less debt and better dividend. TGT also in a similar boat, but in a different sector.

Best site/way to buy upcoming IPOs?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2019 08:54 PM PST

I know there might be a lot of big IPOs coming up this year but it seems like not all investing sites offer IPOs. Are there any sites you guys like using for IPOs? And is there a site that you can guarantee will have all of the big ones available? Thanks for any advice.

Stock in private company turned public.

    Posted: 08 Feb 2019 04:33 PM PST

Scenario: A number of shares of common stock were acquired in a private, early start-up company by an employee as a part of a vesting agreement in early 2000's. Later, employee leaves. Company has IPO a few years after that [but more than 10 years ago from today]. There is a reverse split [or two] along the way. Over the years, employee does nothing related to the shares. Fast-forward to today. Company is still publicly traded on NASDAQ.

Questions: How would someone find out what is the value of the shares of this stock? What is the process for actually adding these shares to one's portfolio etc? Are the shares public or private stock at this point? Who assists with this kind of analysis/work -- financial advisor or broker or someone else?

    Thanks for any helpful info!

Opinions on Shopify (SHOP) Before Earnings and Future Growth

    Posted: 08 Feb 2019 05:31 PM PST

So here is the dilemma I am considering in my head with Shopify. Multiple articles talk about SHOP becoming similar to Amazon (parabolic growth wise) with their current takeover spree (Into other markets) and expansions; however, I have been looking at the last 12-13 Quarter Earnings and the company seems like it is headed toward a wall/plateau (Maybe December was an early warning?)

Revenue has been decreasing from 90% to roughly 50% and EPS has slimmed to beating by <.05. Currently, am contemplating a call of $172.5 expiring 02/15 but slightly concerned if revenue comes up shorter than expected.

Would be interested to hear opinions from others in the community. Maybe I'm slightly too paranoid currently or am I onto something?

    Strong quality balance sheets.

    Posted: 09 Feb 2019 12:39 AM PST

What stocks do you own with strong quality balance sheets?

I've integrated this philosophy into my investing - only owning the names with strong balance sheets generating free cash flow and all the names I own have beat earnings resulting in capital appreciation - Apple, Boeing, Domino's Pizza, Pfizer, Philip Morris International and Procter & Gamble.

In fact, i'm outperforming the S&P500 year to date with a 11.33% return. What big quality balance sheet names do you own?

    Good virtual trading program

    Posted: 09 Feb 2019 12:04 AM PST

    Hi,

I've recently become interested in trading stocks. I have no previous experience of trading before. Currently, I'm waiting for the process of waiting for the government to send me my new ID, and I will register the trading account.

I'm wondering what is the good program to practice virtual trading on computer. Is there a program that allows me to trade in during history of stocks and allow me to fast-forward the time ?

There is one app I'm using in the iPhone but it's harder for me to practice my skills and knowledge with this small timing, although it is quite useful.

    Thank you

What are some Worker Cooperative Companies that are publicly traded?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2019 05:24 PM PST

Hi, All. Newbie here. I'm doing some preliminary research about purchasing individual stocks, and I'm trying to find companies that are worker cooperatives. I truly believe in the benefits of democratic governance of the workplace, and I want to support them with my investments. Yet, I've not been able to find any comprehensive list of these companies. Please post any and all that you've heard of and/or post links to any lists like this that you know of. THANK YOU!

—>What I'm NOT looking for is companies that just use Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOPs).
