From my noob perspective, technical analysis is nonsense. Posted: 04 Feb 2019 02:05 PM PST Granted, I could be very wrong, as I'm very new to the game. But from watching a ton of videos showing how various indicators predict price direction, 100% of them do the following: "Hey, let's look at this EMA line. You see how the price broke through it and continues to ride above it? That means it's trending up and it's probably a good time to buy. Now see how it quickly dipped below the EMA line and is now consistently below it? That means the EMA line became the new resistance." Uhhhh ok... so we're just gonna gloss over the "dipped below the EMA" part? If the price can just randomly dip below that EMA at any point, then what the hell is the point of all this? It's like saying "to run without falling, just keep running, and when you fall that means you fell." ...Great. I see them do the same shit with all the different "indicators." [link] [comments] |

Significant Insider Trading Activity (Last 7 Days) Posted: 04 Feb 2019 03:08 PM PST This is a list of the top 20 companies that experienced the largest change in insider shares in the last seven (7) days. The SEC defines an insider as any officer, director or 10% shareholder. It is not illegal for these people to buy or sell their own shares. In fact, since most of them get paid in stock options, it is expected. However, it is illegal for them to trade on inside information that has not been made public. So for example if there are drug trial results that are bad and not public, insiders cannot dump shares. That said, many people have observed that insiders - in general - seem to have a good track record at timing their purchases. All trades that are marked as part of a 10b5 plan are excluded from this report. Largest Insider Buying (Last 7 Days)Largest Insider Selling (Last 7 Days)Count column is number of transactions. Where are the wealthy investing now? Posted: 04 Feb 2019 05:35 PM PST I can't find the link now, but 1-2 weeks ago I read an article saying the wealthiest American have been buying a lot of stock recently. A few days ago the article below from CNBC was released stating that the wealthiest American are holding more cash and fixed income investments (getting out of equities). Anyone have an idea which is more accurate? Evidence? https://www.cnbc.com/2019/01/31/the-ultra-rich-are-investing-in-cannabis-gold-and-fixed-income.html [link] [comments] |
Technical Analysis Update: Stock Market Rebounds Posted: 04 Feb 2019 08:26 AM PST Key Points
S&P 500 Rebounds. Now What?Investors could sell all of their SPY holdings now, and they will already had an average year's return, and it is only January! Measuring from its low on Christmas Eve, the index is up more than 15%, and more than 9% for the year. The saying goes "The stock market takes the stairs up, but the elevator down." In this case, it took three months for the index to fall 20%, and a little more than a month to gain 15%. The question on every investor's mind is whether this rally will continue, and for how long? First we will analyze the bottom stocks are coming off of, then we'll look at the status if the recovery. The Stock Market Finds a BottomThere were a few signs the market reached a bottom in December. First, the S&P 500 turned around after reaching a 20% decline. I have never seen a support from a percentage loss before, so it was new to me. But we saw a dead cat bounce after the index reached a 10% loss, then a true bottom after reaching the 20% mark. There were other signs of a bottom when we look deep into the index. Most of the cyclical sectors bottomed at significant supports that were created after the 2016 Presidential Election. These are important price levels because the stock market took off after Trump won. Prior to his win, there was a lot of uncertainty about the future of stocks, the economy, and the country. After the election, it was like a weight had been lifted off the shoulders of America, and investors pumped stocks up with strong optimism. Lastly, the Nasdaq Composite index fell to its long-term trend support line. The index has been the leader of the stock market for many years now, because of FAANG and its exposure to technology stocks. When this index reached the uptrend support line, it provided a strong place to enter into the +10-year trend. Stock Market BreadthThis rally has been swift, and almost unbelievable. You don't see the S&P 500 move like this very often. Since the index has already moved up 9% in the first month of the year, it really makes you wonder if you should sell now, and relax for the next 11 months. Let's take a look at bigger picture. The best way to determine if this rally has any legs to stand on is with a breadth check. In technical analysis, breadth measures how many stocks are pushing up the index versus how many are holding it back. We want to see more stocks moving with the index, than against it. So far, that is what we are seeing. The three major indices have more than 75% of their stocks above their 50-day moving averages. Another breadth indicator, the Cumulative Advance-Decline Percent line, is showing new highs, another positive sign that stocks can keep moving up. This is a good sign that stocks have made a recovery. Although, now the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite have more than 85% of their stocks above their moving average. It could be a sign of over exuberance, and there could be some near-term volatility. There is one hiccup I am seeing with this recovery though. DOW THEORY: TRANSPORTATION STOCKSThe Dow Transportation Average has not recovered in the same way the Dow Industrial Average has. The transportation average is still below a significant support level, and thus it is not confirming the Industrial Average. One of the tenets of Dow Theory is that the two averages should confirm one another in a healthy economy. Industrial companies need to rely on shipping companies to move their goods. If shipping stocks start to weaken because of poor fundamentals, its a sign of a slowing economy. I would like to see these averages confirmation because it will tell us investors believe the economy is still strong, and it will continue to be so. For now, this is only something to watch, and NOT indicative of future problems. If we see Transports start to diverge by moving into a downtrend, while the Industrial Average continues to move higher, then it would be a problem worth paying attention to. What to WatchThe major indices broke an important support at last year's February lows. This broken support told us a new downtrend was in play. However, now that stocks have recovered we can confirm this was a false signal. Prior to the drop, there was a false uptrend signal. Now that we have seen two false signals, in both directions, it is now classified as range bound. The range on the S&P 500 is between 2,575 and 2,875. This is a wide range, as it is more than 10% from bottom to top. So, what we will want to watch is what happens when the index reaches these levels. Typically, we will expect prices to reverse when they reach the top or bottom of the range. As the index gets closer to 2,875, we will want to reduce exposure to stocks. When the index is closer to 2,575, we want to increase exposure. Now, if the index breaks above the top, or below the bottom, than we want to prepare for a new trend. If the S&P breaks above 2,875 it is time to load up on exposure once again, with our stop placed just below 2,875. If the index falls below 2,575, it may be best to short the index, and have our stops placed just above 2,575. [link] [comments] |
Significant Activist Hedge Fund Activity (Last 7 Days) Posted: 04 Feb 2019 03:08 PM PST These are the latest Schedule 13D forms filed by activist investors in the last 7 days. Activist investors are investors that make an investment with the intention of influencing management in some way. There is evidence that following activist investors into investments can generate excess returns. Schedule 13G forms, in contrast, are filed by significant investors with no intention of influencing management (such as Index funds). There is always a lot of interest in insider trades, but what a lot of people probably don't realize is that hedge fund activity is probably more predictive of future returns than insider activity. The reason is that hedge funds (a) have large research budgets, and (b) have a choice where to put their money. In contract, insiders have no choice where to put their money, but only when to time their transactions. New FilingsThis table lists new 13D filings in the last week. A new filing does not necessarily indicate a new position, as investors frequently accumulate in advance before reaching the filing threshold. Amended FilingsThis table lists amended filings in the last week, and is useful for monitoring changes in existing investments or when a fund closes a position. I have eliminated all filings with less than a 5% change in ownership. Source: Fintel.io/activists [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Feb 2019 12:09 AM PST I see a lot of people on here and r/wallstreetbets asking and answering questions with anywhere from $1,000 to $70,000+ to invest. As a college student putting 50% of what I make directly into savings for school/future, and with a small (~$30/week) income I want to use just to put into investing, what's the strategy to get involved early in life? Do I buy and hold penny stocks for weeks at a time? Buy a few shares of top names and hold long term? Try to go for short term risky buys? Any general advice is appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Feb 2019 05:54 PM PST I'm doing a stock market game with about 15 others in my economics class. We started a week ago and were given 100k. I have no clue about investing but I've enjoyed researching to try and find out which stock to invest in. So far I've invested in Tencent, Nintendo, Tesla, and Amazon. Any advice? Also how long should I keep an IPO? [link] [comments] |
Options fall quicker than rising. Posted: 04 Feb 2019 05:20 PM PST I have noticed this happening in almost any company's options. Lets say I have a call option. When the stock rises the option rises buy a certain amount, but then even if the stock falls a little bit the option loses its value very quickly. Why is this so? Is this because of the fear in market? I also think that this started happening more often after the October crash. Example - https://imgur.com/a/pOnRisk Edit - Okay, sorry for the misunderstanding. ofcourse I know the greeks, I know time decay causes value loss, But I am talking about INTRA DAY. In the above image at the end of graph fb fell a little bit from the days local maximum, but option fell drastically. Technically, theta should affect the price next day. [link] [comments] |

Is Major stock market correction/crash 2019, a real possibility or just fear mongering... Posted: 04 Feb 2019 07:26 PM PST So i have been reading a steady drumbeat of. financial headlines warn that the latest massive run-up of the stock market is on shaky ground and that the market is headed for a crash. These arguments from folks such as Ray Dalio to Dr. Doom, seem pretty convinving , massive consumer and government debt, out of whack PE ratios, stock buy back madness... etc.. But yet these conditions were true for the last 3 or 4 years , yet the market has kept it's steady upbeat trend. Is there some definitive marker or metric to indicate a correction has started or are we just experiencing the new normal and no crash is imminent ? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 04 Feb 2019 10:56 AM PST What is everyone's opinion on this industry? I am a young investor willing to take risk and feel the potential return is great in this industry. New investor here. Couple of questions. Posted: 04 Feb 2019 10:54 AM PST I am a complete newbie in the stock market but so far I have been able to make some profits off of day trading . The questions that I have pertain to the way my broker handles my profits. I use an online service and they have a flat fee per trade. However, at the end of the market day, when I review my profits/losses, I find some inconsistencies (that may well be because maybe I don't know how this stuff works, but still). Okay, so...
I understand that these questions may sound extremely noob-ish and my terminology might be off but any help is seriously appreciated. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |

Which Vanguard ETF do you use on Robinhood? Posted: 04 Feb 2019 11:05 AM PST |
Trading commodities ETF/ETN 's Posted: 04 Feb 2019 12:04 AM PST I'm relatively new to the stock market, I started a little over a year ago (Dec. 2017) "investing" in canadian marijuweed companies (tripled my money but I don't think you guys care). But I stopped buying/selling a few days after legalization because it's a massive bubble that will consume us all. Anyways I bought some stock in DGAZ, a x3 inverse natural gas ETN last wednesday for ~90$. I notice that it doesn't stop trading untill like 10 p.m? Which I thought was weird. And the NG prices start ticking earlier tonight (Sunday) so it goes by 12:00 am Greenwich time? Cause I saw it going earlier this evening, but the ARCA market doesn't open for trading until monday morning? It seems really risky to hold on to commodities stock over the weekend if you can't trade when NG prices have been ticking for over 12 hours. Also I heard you shouldn't hold onto x2, x3 ETF's for long at all, is that because they charge you a fee or something when you sell? Or is it just because it goes up/down 10% in a single day and is risky asf? I honestly have no clue wtf I'm doing in this but hey NG is tanking hard so I made like literally tens of dollars.
