[MN] My niece [14F] had her new Northface jacket stolen from her locker at school, they refuse to do anything, despite video evidence, and instead they insist the thief has “rights”

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 08:36 AM PST

So this is something I just learned of today. Apparently my niece, who is in highschool, received a brand new Northface jacket for Christmas in 2018. Sometime between now and then, a girl at her school opened her locker, stole her jacket outright and now is denying it. My mother called the school (she is her legal guardian) and the school claims they have video evidence, but they cannot do anything about it as the girl has 'rights'. Is there any validity to their claim about her 'rights'? If there's video proof couldn't we press charges for the jacket itself?

Hi Reddit. My apartment building hasn't had heat since yesterday morning and it's currently 18º in Baltimore. My management company sent an email that said anyone who contacts the police will face monetary repercussions. Is this legal?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 09:53 AM PST

My apartment management company is notoriously terrible, but this takes the cake. My heat has been off since yesterday morning, and management has been extremely vague about whether it'll get fixed. The building is frigid inside, as it reached 10º last night and has only risen to 18º. I'm wearing a coat, boots, and multiple layers of sweatpants in my apartment and am still cold. Additionally, I think the pipes are beginning to freeze because water is barely coming out of my shower and gets lukewarm at best.

Because the majority of the residents in my building are senior citizens, many people are starting to call the police. Management sent out an email and text chain that stated that anyone who calls the police for a non-medical emergency will have money taken out of their deposit. I know this can't possibly be legal, and I don't really know how they'd prove it.

Is there anything I can do to force their hand and get the heat on? Is there any legal authority that manages this kind of issue? Moreover, I don't think I can stand another night in this apartment. Would my management company have to compensate me for a hotel if I had to go to one tonight?

Update: One of the neighbors contacted the Ombudsman's Office and they're sending someone down to see what the building temperature is like. Management isn't answering texts anymore.

[UPDATE] Am I in trouble if something happens to my bedridden boyfriend?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 02:40 PM PST

Here is first post. I did delete it though because I got a lot of messages from people in my area offering to help and I got nervous.

I felt much better after reading all the replies telling me I'm not responsible for him. I really thought if he died and I could have helped I would be in trouble.

I am happy to tell everyone I have not been to Mike's apartment in 3 weeks! He still texts me to tell me he is sick or needs me. I told him "ok I will call an ambulance for you" and he said he is fine! Haha! He told me he is eating less now because he cannot afford the same lifestyle without me helping with the bills. I told him that is good. He said "how much weight do I have to lose for you to come back?" I said "it's too late!"

I want to say thank you to everyone who gave me good advice. Also, I am a Chinese woman who is in the US on a work visa to clear that up.

My next step is to stop talking to Mike all complete. It's hard because I do still worry about him so I don't want to block him 100% yet. He is contacting me less, as he slowly knows I am not coming back. I am staying with my friend until the 15th when I get my own place. I am very nervous but excited to be alone!

I showed up to work Wednesday and found a noose on my desk

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 09:47 AM PST

I alerted management and a few hours later they had found the person the did it. There's cameras everywhere. The guy confessed but said he was just joking around. Race is not a factor. We are both white. But my mother committed suicide by hanging herself and I immediately thought someone was messing with me by trying to hurt me that way. This morning they had a meeting behind closed doors with the guy. He still has a job here. I dont know if there was any punishment at all. Is there anything I can do? I no longer feel safe and comfortable at work. And I'm still going to have to work with the guy that made the noose. Live and work in indiana. I dont want to change jobs. I love my job. But I dont want to be here with that person here. He is sexist, racist, and was fired from another employer for pointing a loaded gun at the building he worked in. So now I'm freaking out about him getting retribution because I possibly got him I trouble.

30 year old man attempting to have secret relationship with my 15 year old daughter.

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 11:10 PM PST

Edit: I'm in Boston, MA. My 15 year old daughter just showed me a thread of Instagram messages from a 30 year old man. At first they were somewhat innocent however progressed to him inviting her to his home, saying that no one needs to know and it can be a secret. It then progressed to him telling her he wants to kiss her and can't stop thinking about her. Throughout the conversation she mentions several times that she's 15.

This man works at a children's medical practice. I am extremely concerned that this was not an isolated incident. My question is, were his messages in and of themselves illegal? And should I report this to his employer? The more I think about this, I'm very concerned that he could be an offender and he's around children all day every day. Thank you for your help!

Roommate caught her boss deleting her hours. What is the next step

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 06:38 AM PST

My roommate has a job at a gas station that she's had for about 6 months. She's been working 30 to 50 hour weeks during that time and has commented frequently that her hours are getting messed up. I was skeptical of her at first but after seeing her check I told her to take pictures of her punches every time for about 2 months now and she's finally caught them red handed. Last night she saw on the computer screen and took photos of 2 edits that shorted her on time and one COMPLETE DAY (Wednesday) that was removed. She has the punches on her phone and I personally as well as several of her regulars saw her that day (I'm having her text them now asking "you remember seeing me at work on wednesday right?"). The store has cameras but I'm guessing evil boss lady might have access to them so I've told her not to say anything that may tip her hand yet (she noticed last night) and luckily she's off today. I personally think she should get the police to get the camera footage. She has also mentioned being able to call corporate as this is either a chain or franchise of some sort. This is in South Carolina if that maters legally. What should I tell her and thanks in advance.

EDIT: Ok, so a litte more info and her crazy plan. She doesn't have a car and this gas station is a block from our house so she just told me she wants to keep the job (while looking for another) and keep collecting evidence. I'm sure they will do it again and again as the boss still doesn't know she knows. She says she wants to get a month's or two worth of evidence and sue them. Is this even possible?

Update I injured a dog that bit me, now the owner is are threatening to sue me for the vet bills

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 11:32 AM PST

So, first and foremost, I did not kill the dog. The dog was labeled a dangerous dog and euthanized.

I met with a personal injury lawyer and she basically said the guy had no chance if he tried to sue me. She reiterated a lot of the advise that was given to me: if he sues, respond and go to court, and I should consider suing him for my medical bills and legal fees. She drafted a letter for me to mail which basically warned of the consequences of suing me (specifically my counter suit), and she suggested I contact animal control and the vet (which again, many of you did as well) to see if I can get the complete history of what happened. The vet wasn't that helpful, they wouldn't discuss it with me. Animal control told me that dog had bitten before and the owner surrendered it and it was euthanized.

I did not pay the owner as the letter demanded, so we'll see if he actually tries to sue me. I'm still deciding if I want to sue him.

Thank you everyone, even those that are upset at me for kicking the dog.

My landlord told me to pay for repair of my home out of pocket because it was an act of god

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 08:49 AM PST

I go to school in the Midwest and was just affected pretty hard by the polar vortex. Some friends and I rent a house (not cheap I might add) and we've had problems with the landlord before. This time I don't actually know of he's right or not,

With the temperature dropping to such a low number, the pipes in my college home froze and actually burst. The maintenance man came in, told us he couldn't fix it, and said because it was an "act of god" that we should seek outside help and get it fixed ourselves. The landlord reinforced this. Do I have to pay for something like this, of should I seek outside help on the matter? I'm lost and don't wanna pay for a major home repair on a home I've only lived in for five months.

Hotel charged me $400 but "aren't holding the money" and blame it on my bank.

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 07:30 AM PST

Okay so, this is weird and maybe I'm an idiot but.. hear me out.

I'm in a long term stay at a hotel for work. It began as an 8 week stay and I had talked to the manager about paying bi-weekly as I get my housing stipend within each paycheck. They said no problem. When I did the original check in, they held a $50 incidentals fee. No issues with that.

Yesterday I got paid and went in to pay the first two weeks. The front desk couldn't figure out how to charge it without checking me out and couldn't get ahold of the manager, so she decided she'd check me out and back in. I gave her my card for the (let's say $500 to even things out) charge. She gives it back to me and gives me my receipts for the first two weeks.

She checks me back in, hands me two keys for the room and the "contract" to initial and sign. I didnt see anything about charges except for the already set room rate which was correct.

Then when were done, I'm getting ready to leave and shes looking at a paper with a confused face. She hands it to me and it says "Transaction Reciept". It's for $400 (to keep things even again). I was confused and questioned it as she hadnt said anything about charges when she checked me in and I hadnt given her my card to charge me. She says it wont charge me anything it's just telling me what I'll owe but stresses it doesnt charge me that money. I said fine, okay cool.

On my way back to my room I checked my bank account for shits and giggles and low and behold, there it is. The $400 right after the $500 was taken out of my account. So I've essentially paid double and have no money for the next two weeks.

I went back down and she said "it's a pending charge, not a full sale. Were not holding it, we can't do that! Were not a bank. Call call bank!"

I called my bank. "Theyve got a pending charge and have two weeks to either complete the sale or cancel it. We cannot release it until they do one of those things."

And then insued a dizzying circle of those two answers repeatedly.

So, is there anything I can do? My bank asked if I authorized it and I want to say no, I really didnt. She didnt ever tell me it was charging it and even when she handed me the "reciept" claimed it wasnt a charge. The manager is new and is stuck on the whole "were not your bank we cant hold the money" but... they ARE technically preventing it from belling released by maintaining the pending charge.

I have to stay here for 6 more weeks and I dont want to rock the boat too bad, but I literally have no money for food and will need another tank of gas later this week to get to work (I work 45 minutes away and this is the closest affordable hotel).

    Am I fucked?

    Edit: I'm residing in Colorado

Is our lawyer taking advantage of us?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 08:33 AM PST

My wife and I live in Maryland, USA.

I am in the process of adopting my stepson, her biological child. The biological father is 100% on board and simply asked "Where do I sign?" when the idea was presented to him. The child has never met the bio-dad and the bio-dad wants nothing to do with him. I have been in the picture since the child was 2 and he is now 6.

Anyways, we started the process of step-parent adoption a few months ago, in November, I believe. During our consultation, the lawyer told us his retainer was 3,000 and required another 3,000 be placed in something called an "Evergreen Fund", so that if the retainer ran out, the additional needed funds would be available. He told us that, and I quote, "this is unlikely to go over the initial retainer, and you'll get back anything that isn't spent once this is all said and done." That seemed reasonable, so we agreed to use his services. He told us that we had all our ducks in a row before even starting (consent from bio-dad, her and I have been married for several years, the child already considers me his father, her parents and my parents are super excited about the adoption).

Now, several months later, the original 3k is gone, the second 3k is gone, once that ran out they asked for another 3k, and that is almost out and we haven't even gone to trial yet. We've gone from "this is unlikely to cost more than 3k" to costing somewhere between 9k and 12k. My wife and I are extremely frustrated, as this has wiped out most of our savings. Not that it's relevant, but she's pregnant and we are trying to save up to buy a house.

When we voiced our concerns about it costing significantly more than we were originally told, he said something about "the laws regarding adoption in Maryland have changed recently, and I had to research those changes to make sure I had all the required documents the court needed."

I know this isn't a legal question, per se, but are we just shit out of luck and have to keep paying this guy? Or is there something else we could/should be doing?

Phone company left a bad rating on my Credit Report, won't remove it.

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 09:07 AM PST

    My location is Alberta, Canada.

In November 2015 my cell phone plan was up for renewal, so I called in to get a new phone. Long story short, I decided I did not want the phone from them or to be their customer anymore, so I cancelled the phone and switched to a different service provider. At the beginning of December, I received a notice that the phone had been shipped to me from the original phone company(despite having verified by multiple people that the shipment was cancelled). I called the company, and as per their instructions, I received the package from the post office, and sent it right back. I then got confirmation that the phone was received by someone at their facilities somewhere in Ontario.

A month later, I got a bill that was charging me for the full amount of the phone(~$1000). I called to dispute it as I had returned the phone, and was told that yes, it was a mistake and would be corrected. The following month it was still there. This continued from December 2015 until about April 2016, then the charge was finally removed. In 2017 I applied for a line of credit, and was informed that I was declined due to a negative code on my credit report. I received the report and found that under that company, they had given me an I9 rating due to "overdue payments". I tried multiple times to dispute this with the company and each time was told that it had been taken care of. This was not true each time. I finally sent in a dispute with the credit bureau. The result said that the information received from the company was accurate. I called to verify this and was told to contact the phone company instead.

I just want the rating on my credit report fixed. Should I be pursuing this through legal channels? Is there another route I can take?

Doctor allowed a trainee to perform trigger point injections, I am now in the hospital for pneumothorax. Do I have a medical malpractice suit, or any legal recourse whatsoever?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 02:07 AM PST

Received depomedrol shots before which went perfectly, then had to find a new place once I moved to Pennsylvania. I went to a location of a large pain management and surgical center franchise in my area. I met with the doctor and a girl in scrubs who was entering my information into their electronic system. They move me to the surgical area. The doctor marks the areas that are to be injected. They are behind me, I am under the impression that the doctor is doing the injections and the girl is watching, but towards the end of it I realize that he is letting her do them. I was not told that anyone other than the doctor would be performing them. Immediately upon leaving, the area feels very strange, but I ignore it. 90 minutes after, I am toppling over and finding it difficult to breathe. I call their office, they had just closed 2 minutes earlier. I knock on the door but am ignored despite employees still being inside.

My aunt is a nurse and checks out my breathing and assures me that I'm fine. I take a Xanax, figuring it may have been a panic attack, and feel a bit better. Enough to go about my day. But it is still painful to take deep breathes and nearly impossible. I wake up and it is still painful to breathe. I call their office and explain the situation to which the snobby office manager replies: "maybe you can't breathe because you take a narcotic and a benzo"(I have been using these medications for years with no problems, the narcotic is low dose). I tell her that I believe my lung is punctured and she tells me they don't have x-ray machines there so they wouldn't know. Then hangs up on me.

I go to an urgent care who performs a chest xray and sees that my lung has collapsed and tells me to go to the ER immediately. I've been here ever since and will be here for several more days, missing several days of work in the process. I am still experiencing extreme chest pain. Can anything be done here? I stopped by and got all the paperwork from this pain office right before I went to the ER and read the fine print that I signed, and nothing says anything about pneumothorax or punctured lungs, and I never agreed to let anyone other than the authorized prescriber perform these injections.

Is it worth contacting a lawyer to sue? At the very least, will the practice who messed up cover my medical bills? I'm going to be in here for several days minimum, if not a week.

Wedding photographer took deposit, moved to South Korea with military boyfriend (PA/South Korea)

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 09:52 AM PST

Hello, I signed a contract with a wedding photographer and paid her a deposit (contract was signed in PA). I find out a few weeks later that she has moved out of the country and is living in South Korea with her military boyfriend. We talked online and she agreed to pay me back the deposit (so I can book a new photographer), but she kept pushing it back (I'm getting pain in 2 weeks, etc) and finally has stopped responding to me. I am wondering how I would go about getting my deposit returned to me, would I be able to file in small claims or would that not do me any good because she does not live in the United States? Should I contact the military base? I know her name, her husbands name and where they are stationed. Thanks for any help!

CA - Asst. Principal threatening my son to a confession

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 08:02 AM PST

This happened this week. I'll lay out the facts as best I can. Any/all help is greatly appreciated.

Apologies this is a quite long.

TLDR: My son was accused of smoking off campus; denied it until the Asst Principal threatened to get law enforcement involved. I had my son take a nicotine/tobacco test (same one health/life insurance companies use), which he passed. Speaking with the other parents, this Asst. Principal embellished the facts, lied and threatened the students to get confessions. He has done this in the past both to my son and others.

I'll try to stick to the facts, then give my feelings at the end.

Tuesday of this week, my son and 3 friends walked off the school grounds immediately after school ended to a park across the street from the school. Returning from the park, a security guard saw them and asked what they were doing. They said they were just walking around and taking pictures (2 of them are on the yearbook staff). The park is known to be a spot where in the past they have caught students drinking, smoking, etc. The security guard radioed the Asst. Principal, but didn't detain the kids. 2 of them were getting picked up by their parents, which they told the security guard, who then left. My son and the other kid then walked backed to the school to go to practice.

Back on school grounds, the Asst. Principal met them half-way to the gym, told them to come to his office. Questioned them separately, searched them both but didn't find any cigarettes/lighter. Told my son he could smell cigarette smoke on him a little bit. He demanded his phone, and told him to unlock it. Went through his messages/IM's. Didn't see anything other than a message from 1 of the 2 that had left, asking what happened. My son denied smoking, and kept denying it until the Asst Principal told him he needed to confess, or he was getting law enforcement involved. My son then wrote out an admission, the principal called me; and my son was picked up by his Grandmother. She smelled him and his hands, and couldn't smell anything. The Asst Principal told me Nate did not go to the bathroom, so he didn't have a chance to wash his hands.

I ordered a nicotine test that night (Tues), same type health/life insurance companies use to see if you're a tobacco user. Test arrived last night; and my son passed it.

This Asst Principal in the past has lied to my son to try and get a confession - he told him he had written confessions from others saying he did something, which was false. My son didn't confess, and the matter was dropped.

If my son was smoking; I fully support the schools punishment and he'd have to deal with me at home which would be much worse. If he messes up - he needs to deal with the repercussions. However; I have a real problem with what I feel is this guy abusing his position of authority, lying and threatening kids to get confessions. I feel my son's confession was coerced. There was no evidence of him smoking - no one saw them, no cigarettes or lighters were found. It comes down to the Asst Principal saying he smelled it, vs. the negative test.

I know he embellishes the truth - spoke with one of the parents of the boys that left; when they met with the Asst. Principal he told them their boy "escaped", when the security guard drove off and left them to get picked up by their parents. He told us they refused to come back to the school.

We have a phone conference with the Principal (his boss) this morning.

    Questions -

    1. Are school administrators allowed to lie and threaten students to get confessions? I tried googling this, but couldn't find anything for CA - only a TX case where it was ruled they cannot.

    2. Are they able to go through a student's phone? Only thing I could find on this is I think he could've refused. Schools have the right to go through the phone if it's an emergency or if they have a warrant.

    3. Are there any CA court cases on these matters? I tried but couldn't find anything.

Thank you for any help you can provide!

[MA] Accidentally told Renter's Insurance my dog is a pit-lab. She's actually a boxer. Now I owe an extra $20 per month

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 08:58 AM PST

Okay, I realize this is petty, and not nearly as deserving of your attention as some of the posts on here. If you're a big shot lawyer providing your service to people that need help, please move along and help them. This isn't worth your time. Also, thank you for doing what you do. I've seen some amazing life-changing advice on here. This isn't one of those circumstances. Also, if I need to move this to another sub, please let me know what it is.

That said, I just made a mistake on a phone call with my renter's insurance provider. While talking to them, I accidentally told them that my dog is a pit-lab. She's not. I have no idea why I said that first. She's mainly a lab, and if she is mixed with anything, it's a boxer. Everyone I meet asks if she's a boxer lab mix. But because I said pit lab first, they had to classify her as an aggressive type, and it shot my rate up $20/month. Every dollar counts, but really this just bugs me because I made a $240/year mistake.

Because I said it on a recorded phone call, they had to go with my first answer even though I very clearly expressed afterwards (immediately - within the same sentence and without any response from them) that she was boxer lab. I did this before they even told me that it will cost extra. I was just clarifying. And now they can't go back on the classification. I got so stubborn about it that I told this guy to have his supervisor call me. She is calling later today, and I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to reclassify her.

Also, now that there's an official classification of me owning an 'aggressive dog' I am wondering if this will play into my life down the road -- like where I can live, etc.

    Thanks

[CA] Can I be sued for bringing someone to the ER?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 09:26 AM PST

My mother in law got black out drunk last night and fell and smashed her mouth into a concrete planter. My father in law (also black out drunk) was walking with her when it happened. MIL was gushing blood from her mouth with a 2" cut that went completely through her lip, as well as multiple cuts inside her lip where her teeth went through. She could not feel the pain and kept insisting she was fine, but was bleeding a lot. FIL also was insisting she was fine and wanted to put her to bed. My wife and I got FIL out of the way and carried MIL to the car and drove her to the ER. After a few hours and about 40 stitches they were able to stop the bleeding. She had lost so much blood in the time that time that her blood pressure dropped to 60/40 and they wanted to keep her for monitoring and IV's. In this time FIL took a cab to the hospital and was in the room, yelling about everything they were doing and about how much this was going to cost. He ended up kicking my wife and I out of the room and told us to leave. Once they were released they drove themselves home (about 8 hours) and will not answer phone calls from us. I am worried they are going to come after us when they get the bill since we essentially forced her into the hospital. There was no way we could have gotten the bleeding to stop at home. Were we in the wrong? Can they sue us for the hospital charges?

[NY] My ex-fiancee and her family are holding me financially hostage through our apartment

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 07:57 AM PST

I broke off my engagement to my fiancee a few weeks ago, and now we're in the middle of a protracted dispute over our shared apartment. We were only about three months away from the wedding, and as such I have (I believe generously) agreed to pay half of the wedding expenses.

I broke it off because she was emotionally abusive and manipulative (long story short, she pushed me away from friends, broke me down emotionally, and manipulated me into becoming more and more committed in ways I wasn't comfortable with), and I don't regret my decision in leaving.

Since she told me many times that she would not cohabitate with someone she wasn't engaged or married to, and since she has fewer places to stay in the city we're in (I'm much better connected), when I broke up with her I immediately moved most of my stuff out of the apartment and found a new place to live. I expected us to then talk about splitting up the apartment (our only major shared asset), which we only moved into a few months ago. However, things got very contentious very quickly.

She refused to talk to me about anything to do with money, and insisted I talk to her father, who has basically stonewalled me in negotiations. The breakup, he insists, was solely my fault, and my moving out benefited only me, and as such, he's given me two options:

    • Pay them the full amount that it would cost to break the lease (3 months of rent), after which they would remove me from the lease
    • Continue to pay half of the rent for the remainder of the lease

My firm offer has been to give them half of what it would cost to break the lease, and then be removed from the lease. Although she can't afford to live in the apartment alone, my ex still wants to live there for a few months until she can figure out her next steps. I honestly don't care what she does with the apartment, just as long as I'm not financially liable.

It seems like they're playing chicken with me - they're daring me to not pay the rent and ruin my credit score in the process, even though I'm not sure that they would be willing to do this with her credit score, too.

The problem is that the difference in what he wants me to pay and what I want to pay is probably much less than what legal fees would cost, although it represents a very large portion of several years' worth of my savings.

They are now refusing to negotiate further. What are my next steps? Do I have any legal rights here? Should I play hardball with them and refuse to pay rent, daring them to force their daughter to be evicted? Should I just take the loss and pay what they're asking me to pay?

UK, Wrapped a storage cupboard in an art print found online for decoration, the artist wants to be paid.

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 01:57 PM PST

This is a weird one and I need to know where we stand... any advice appreciated!

I run a small production studio and we store our equipment in large grey containers and cupboards. The space we operate in is quite colourful so the greyness sticks out like a sore thumb!

We found some really nice art print designs online, purchased them, sent them off to a printers to fit the dimensions of the cupboards, and got each one professionally wrapped.

Woo, colourful space to keep morale high! A few people posted them on Instagram to show off the new look, and some tagged the artist.

    Fastforward to this email...

"I noticed you have used my artwork without permission. This is unbelievable and unacceptable. Please contact me immediately to resolve this matter"

Have we done anything wrong? We're not selling the art, we haven't stolen from him, surely if the art is available to buy you can then go and frame it or use it to decorate whatever you like - as long as you're not getting commercial gain from it or claiming it as your own.

    Any advice would be appreciated!

Hi reddit. My employer is paying me well below minimum wage and I dont know if this is legal or not.

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 11:54 AM PST

As the title implies, my employer is not paying me the minimum wage and I dont know if it is legal. I have worked at a large fast food chain in East Texas for the past 2 months, and every single check I have received has been low. I , like an intimidated idiot, brushed it off. My most recent check was VERY low. I worked 57 hours over 2 weeks and I only received $128.74 even though I make 7.25 an hour. The reason my employer gave me was that since I dont work 40 hours a week, minimum wage does not apply to me. I need to know of this is legal or not and how I can fight it. Thanks guys.

    Edit: I am paid bi-weekly.

Ex wife claimed our 3 girls on her taxes when she has only seen them about 25 days last year. Causing my refund to be rejected.

Originally we were supposed to do 2 for me and 1 for her then alternate years according to the dissolution. That was when shared parenting was happening. She pays no support and doesn't pay half of everything like it was written in the dissolution. I was supposed to pay insurance at the time because it was inexpensive. I changed jobs and she offered to cover the girls. She was recently fired and neglected to tell me that she lost insurance. Even though we have a daughter that has type1 diabetes. So my girlfriend and I got married to make sure the girls were covered and since my insurance at my job is expensive and garbage. My question is, can I do anything about her claiming my girls when she definitely had no right to do so? Ohio btw.

Got a call saying I was in possession of stolen goods.

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 05:39 AM PST

In a bit of a situation. Purchased a bunch of car parts recently from someone I met through a selling app. He said his dad passed away and left him a bunch of car parts that he didn't have a use for (engines, transmissions, body panels, seats, etc). After I bought everything I resold them because it's a side hustle of mine. But after that's happened I get a call from the sellers uncle telling me that the items are his and says I possess stolen property. I bought the parts in good faith believing that they did belong to the seller. Wondering what could happen if I can't get the items back that I sold?

My city government job made me give up my adopted dog that was formerly abandoned and undergoing treatment for heart worms

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 12:04 PM PST

    North Carolina

So, I work for a public library. 3 weeks ago, a homeless patron had given me a dog that was abandoned by another homeless patron (I will refer to this person as A) in the tent community they all share. The only reason I am pointing out that these people in the story are homeless is because this issue involves a shelter run by the city council that will come up later. This person, A, is unstable and abusive. Initially she claimed the dog to be a service animal. Then, at random, she decided she did not want the dog anymore and left him in a random persons tent. I took possession of the dog outside of the library I am employed at and took him home. After his vet visit, I realized he has heart worms and decided to keep him as my own since it is very hard to get anyone to adopt a pitbull with heartworms. I then registered him in my name, since his chip I.D. was unregistered. Fast forward to 3 days ago. Another regular homeless patron (B), went around to staff claiming that A has lied and said that her dog was stolen and that she was going to stab the person who has him. B also said there was no proof because the post was deleted. I asked for B to give me something, and all I got were screenshots of a conversation of A asking for a ride to go get her new 'service animal'. I had to report that B was making these claims and, in the process, I was told by my bosses boss to relinquish the dog to authorities. I was informed that I would be charged with a felony and that I had no choice, although this was in fact a personal matter. I begged them to reconsider and just let me write a report, but it was implied that I had become a liability and, therefore, my job was at risk. This boss boss just pile-drived me into a corner, treated me like I was a child, and left me no alternative but to listen to him. I felt humiliated and degraded by him in that final meeting. He then told me to 'put it in the past' and 'move on'. I was also instructed that I could not talk to anyone about anything that went on. I cried so much that my face hurt and my eyes hurt. Later, I was informed that I would be handing the dog to a city H.R. representative who would take the dog to the director of the shelter to determine what would happen next. I figure this was a tactic to ensure that I would not fight it anymore than I had. I took leave yesterday to cope with it because, not only did no one listen to me about the circumstances and the potential life threatening health issues the dog suffered, I barely had time to say goodbye. I had bonded closely with him in the 2.5 weeks I had him. Well, I received a call from the assistant to the director of the shelter. They informed me that they wanted to return the dog to me. Although I was beyond happy to get him back, I asked for the director of the shelter to call me to assure me that this wasn't a cruel trick. That director did call me and told me that they were personally handing the dog back over to me. They brought him back before the day was over. They had told me that they talked with the city manager and the city council (which my bosses bosses boss, the director, sat on) and they all agreed that the dog belonged with me. Now I'm sitting here waiting on another meeting.

What I guess I'm asking is, did they have any right to force me to do any of that? The dog was not being sought after and I did not feel as if I had been treated with respect or any sensitivity to the situation. The dog was also not really a service dog, because I verified that he was unregistered. Help!
