I've started a podcast similar to How I Built This but with small businesses, and I'm in the running to be on my city's NPR channel! What types of small businesses would you want to hear on a podcast?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2019 11:00 AM PST

    Hey everyone!

So my Charlotte's NPR station is holding a contest for its next show, and I've made it to the public voting round. The top five finalists will move on to a Q and A event where judges will choose the winner. So far I've interviewed the owners of a local brewery, yoga studio, recording studio and bistro.

What are some more small businesses that you would want to hear the owner of interviewed?

If you want some more information on the podcast/contest then you can check out the link below. This is also where you can vote if you wanted to (I would really appreciate it). Each person can vote every day.

    Thanks everyone!

How to deal with violent threat from customers?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2019 07:26 PM PST

I own a small auto body shop in a not so good neighbourhood. As you can imagine, when customers get a quote that they dont like, they get quite angry. Recently I had to deal with a customer who was yelling at my employee. I told him we wont do service on his car but he decided to leave it in the shop parking lot anyways. He said he'll be back tomorrow and "it better be ready and im not paying any more than $XXX, you dont want to find out what will happen if its not ready" and left.

How would you guys deal with something like this? Call the cops or have the car towed? Or just do the work?

Need Advice: Helping a friend who runs a small biz. They offer a low $x,xxx priced service and want to move from their current brochure website to an ecommerce model.

What ecommerce + website builder solution should I be suggesting?

My initial thought was Wix Ecommerce.

There are only 3 products with 3 options for each if that helps. For instance Product A (small, medium large), Product B (small, medium, large), and Product C (small, medium, large). So, it's not a store with dozens (or more) products.

Anybody know of small business friendly cloud-based social and e-mail archiving solutions?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2019 06:16 PM PST

Anybody own a small business that needs to follow regulatory compliance for e-mail and social media communications? All of the applications I see charge ~$100-200 a month to archive email and social media content. Anybody know of cheaper cloud-based options?

How to use knowledge and experience to diversify income?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2019 11:45 PM PST

I have a business where I buy and sell physical items in a certain niche. This business is mostly automated where I can define buy limits to buy things that are profitable and then sell them on when I know there will be a profit.

This is great but has a limit as there isn't always that many items below the limit that I want to buy - this is the main limitation of the business.

In an effort to try and make more money, I'm trying to come up with ways to make money from the knowledge (and potentially data?) I have on this subject, to remove the limitations of this project and to make more money.

For example, if I was buying and selling property, I could run a course on how I do this as a second revenue stream.

Does anyone have ideas on how I could diversify within this project to make money from a different income stream?

    Thanks BI

Tax breaks for LLC on Individual taxes

    Posted: 08 Feb 2019 09:38 PM PST

I've been in the process of launching a business which started last year when I formed an LLC. As April is approaching I need to figure out what to do with my taxes... I have done no business yet but I have acquired inventory and spent money on inventory, graphic designers and lawyers. I am also the sole proprietor. Some basic questions I have

    1. Can I deduct things from my personal taxes as I have no taxes from my business to deduct?
    2. If so what can I look to deduct? A portion of my house that is rented is used to store and handle business stuff. Can I deduct initial inventory depreciation?
    3. If I can't deduct anything do I need to file anything since I've had no income yet?

WiFi attendance software that actually works?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2019 11:21 AM PST

Hello! I'm trying to find a free attendance software that will automatically punch an employee in when they connect to the Wifi and also disconnect them when they leave a geo net. Dingtalk would be perfect if it actually worked as advertised for us. I'm hesitant to use WiFi Attendance as I cannot view features or UI without signing up first.

Does anybody know of a solid location-based attendance software that could help me out?

    Thanks!

    Packaging/Boxes Tips

    Posted: 08 Feb 2019 07:33 AM PST

Any tips on where or how to purchase boxes in bulk for shipping purposes? Every option we've considered is surprisingly costly. I feel like there's gotta be a better way... What am I missing? At the prices I've seen, I can't imagine how so many businesses can afford packaging for shipments to customers out of their area.

    TIA for any tips!

Hi there I run a small exterior cleaning company in Canada BC and was simply looking on people's opinions on how to expand my clientele list.

    Posted: 08 Feb 2019 09:04 AM PST

To get more in depth my company's website is www.JVPSexteriorcleaning.ca (that will explain all of my services), this line of work has great profit you can make a bit below or above $100 an hour per job. the clients are the hardest thing to acquire, ive done the following: door to door sales, Facebook group posts in local community groups, Facebook ads, google ads, putting up signs at gated communities. Out of everything the most success ive had was door to door sales and Facebook group posts as this point i am assembling a group of 5 sales guys that are mostly 16 years old (my younger brother's friends). The goal is to have constant clients, do you FINE REDDIT FOLKS HAVE ANY ADVICE AS TO WHICH TACTIC I SHOULD USE in order to expand my clientele business.

A small business looking for help with recording expenses

    Posted: 08 Feb 2019 05:53 PM PST

Hi guys! I'm a small business owner and I'm having a really hard time figuring out how to properly track and record expenses.

I am an artist and my primary platform is Instagram and Etsy. Throughout this next year I'm looking to expand to my own website where people can purchase prints and originals from me. The websites track invoices and that's simple enough to figure out and I know that I need to register for a small business tax vendor ID.

The thing I'm struggling the most with is properly recording my expenses in one place (cost of paints, paper, packing materials, shipping, etc) and then using these expenses as tax write offs.

Someone suggested getting a credit card and account solely for purchases and uploading the csv files with my taxes.

Any thoughts or easier means of tracking expenses?

Where can you find potential collaborators?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2019 02:07 PM PST

I apologize if this is the wrong subreddit to ask. I don't frequently roam outside of my regulars. I will be trying a few other subs, but if you have suggestions or if the content is inappropriate, please let me know and I will remove.

The question is simple. I'm thinking of entering the startup/tech world after grad school. I have lots of ideas and a particular skillset (science-based, statistics, programming), but I don't know the business aspect of opening a small business or startup.

What's a good way to find others that share similar interests to you and may be interested in collaborating on a new project?

Real Life Examples of Social Media Strategies

    Posted: 08 Feb 2019 01:47 PM PST

I work for a small clothing company and my manager tasked me to increase our social media presence.

I'm looking for success stories of the actual steps you've taken and the tools you've used to successfully drive traffic to your business. In other words, what real-life strategies have actually worked for you? In other posts and subs, I've seen broad generalized suggestions like 'regularly reach your target audience with relevant content', but I'm not really sure what that means in the real world and the actual steps you need to take to accomplish that.

    Rant - Clients Website

    Posted: 08 Feb 2019 11:31 AM PST

I know i'm going to catch flack for this from some of the small business website designers on here, but I just have to rant. This burns me so bad its not even funny.

Quick background - I'm a MSP owner, we deal with small businesses exclusively, I do not do websites, it is not something we specialize in. However, we do occasionally talk to a business owner with a website that looks like it was made in the early 90's. Its not functional, no mobile, its hideous. So we work with them to either A. find a website company that is reasonable or B. we do offer to help them with a Wix/Square site. As we find they just dont have the time or interest in learning how to do one themselves.

Fast Forward - small florist shop, website looks like it was made by a high schooler in 1992, there is no e-commerce built in, no mobile, the pictures are not in line, its a joke! We had been pushing to upgrade to help drive some more revenue and eventually get an e-commerce shop. Well come to find out this company she has been paying 700$ a month too, lets call them VIVIAL. 700$ a month! and your site looks like garbage!? seriously, thats high way robbery for a little old florist shop, they dont understand, its not their job to. We are still digging into the exact billing details but supposedly 500$ of that was going to SEO, so we are diggin for analytical information to prove that. And right now I hardly doubt they were using that 500$ a month for SEO. It just angers me that there are people/companies such as VIVIAL that do this. Take advantage of people.

With that said I do have to say be aware of crap like this, always question what you are paying for services as a small business and are you getting what you wanted out of a service regardless of what the service is. As most companies and people are not out to actually help someone else, they are out to make money and they dont care at the end of the day, especially the big dogs. Ok i'm done now :)

Placing Business Card on House Doors?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2019 05:17 PM PST

Is it considered soliciting when I place a business card in a door without knocking? I was stopped today by an angry lady who said that I was soliciting and peddling even though I'm not actually talking to anybody. Also, there does happen to be city signs put up around the neighborhood that state no soliciting or peddling.

I am operating in Peoria, Arizona.

Do you use a business coach?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2019 03:52 PM PST

Hey there! Do any of you use a business coach? I have wanted to use a coach for a while but have not had the budget.

I own two companies. One service and one tech. Looking for some accountability and guidance from someone who has been there/ done that.

I have plenty of mentors and people to talk with. I am looking for that next level of accountability in a more formal environment. I know there has never been a world class athlete/ performer/ etc without a great coach!

If you use a coach you would recommend, how much do you pay? How long have you been doing it? What should I be looking for when interviewing?

If you wanted to hire a digital marketing agency, what would you look for?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2019 08:12 AM PST

I'd like to get some candid feedback on what you would want to see before you hire an agency. What you would expect from them that would distinguish from others. Lastly, if you jumped onto a landing page, would you prefer to easily submit a lead form, or read up on the benefits first?

    Edit: Fixed typo
